I love Tarralyn, and I've been voting for her. However, I think she's playing herself. Just by her being on this show, and by some of the things that she has said, she is making it look as if she only recorded a Gospel CD to get paid. She made a statement that said something to the effect of ," People may know of Tarralyn Ramsey the Gospel Artist, but what they don't know is that Tarralyn the Gospel Artist didn't have $100 in her bank account." Plus, you have to question her management and record company. What kind of contract did they really have her under not to make any cash? John P. Kee produced her. That's enough to sell CD's by itself. Plus, when she was in the studio on the show, and they interviewed her, she said that she had to "detox" herself and stop singing like a "straight up church girl." Honey...if you were born to sing in church, you're gonna sound like a "straight up church girl" no matter what you sing! There' s nothing wrong with it! I sound like a straight-up church girl when I sing and I'm proud of it!

I have read articles dated back to when she first came out, and she was saying that she has turned down mainstream contracts because she was doing what God called her to do. This was back in her early teens. Now? I'm not the one to say that she has abandoned her calling, but that's how it looks.

i want to start by saying that there were a LOT of really talented sisters that auditioned for VH1 born to diva-- i know if certain individuals would have agreed with their contract, TOMEY wouldn't have been there. now, i don't want to rag on tomey(since i am from MIAMI!), but #1: the divas that made it in MIAMI looked like a hot mess; i know they could have found better than that in south florida! and #2: tomey has a different kind of style and i think you have to appreciate that before you can say that she just plain out sucks. i didn't think ENO from london was that hot until i stopped to appreciate the quality of her voice...
now, on to TARRALYN. that girl can sing like it is NOBODYS business. i am going to go out and totally buy her gospel CD because tommy mottola was right: GOD really does live in her voice. when she sang in the finals in NY, i got tears in my eyes. that being said, i think that we really can't judge her decision to sing secular music because, hell, she may have been using this born to diva thing as a stepping stone to bigger things. only she and GOD know her rationale and her planning and personal motivation. to insinuate that she is selling out what she feels to be her calling is something we really can't do. just because it may appear that way on the outside to us doesn't mean that it is necessarily so.
also, the comments she made about "singing like a straight up church girl" simply apply to the situation. the producers didn't want her to have a gospel sound because it didn't flow with her song-- she can't get hated on for saying she had to "detox"; she was giving them what they wanted. and about "tarralyn ramsey the gospel singer not having 100 dollars in her bank account": she was just keeping it real. in essence, to me, she is was more of less saying, "don't get it twisted--i'm here to get the same big break as everybody else". perhaps her previous deal didn't afford her that. either way, i don't think she was trying to say that she only did gospel at the point in her life for the money. but if she did, she wouldn't be the only one. my girl yolanda adams even said that when she was making the choice to sing gospel, she was asked to do jazz, which is secular. she said by her reasoning, it made more sense to gospel because it was want she felt in her heart, but also because she felt that gospel was more lucrative than jazz. at the end of the day, we all gotta get paid!
i think no matter what, tarralyn will do great things and as was said before, GOD will still get the glory.

My thoughts:

Mary can sound awful but I will still love to see her perform because she gives it 200% every single time. And she is looking GREAT!

Chaka still sounds awesome.

WHITNEY. OMG. She sounded like hot azz trash. Not EVEN going to comment on the Whitney/Bobby. Her voice sounds just godawful now.

Beyonce DID THE THANG last night y'all. She looked great, sounded great.

Loved Latifah as host. The Chicago thing was cute.

Jewel....um...can I get you to MOVE? I was LMAO at Proud Mary when Beyonce was all Tina-ed out and trying to get Jewel to dance. That was the stiffest shimmy ever. And who knew you could turn a Stevie song into folk?

Celine...$%3g90vm-34579g-32h omgomgomg, WHOOOOOO told her to e29g38m705735q no words

You guys, Ashanti wasn't THAT bad, lol. I liked that she kind of stayed out of the way. She knows she is not a DIVA in the vein of Mary and Chaka, she was just happy to be there.

TERRALYN, YOU REPRESENTED!!! THAT'S MY HIGH SCHOOL CLASSMATE Y'ALL!!!! :D :D :D

ETA: I also thought it was hilarious that Terralyn BLEW UP a Whitney song, then Whitney came on right after and sounded like steamy garbage.

That was SITUATIONAL IRONY at its best.

WHITNEY, WHITNEY, WHITNEY! And one time she arguably had the best voice of our generation. She should go into early retirement to save what is left of her mystique as an artist. I agree pretty much with what everyone else said about the other artist. Oh, QUEEN LATIFAH TRYING TO LOOK GOOD NOW!

The name of the song Beyonce sang is Dangerously in Love. I like the show and the lil lady who won the contest can sing her butt off. Was it just me or was Whitney having a hard time hitting her notes. But overall I thought it was a great show.

theone 05-23-2003 04:06 PM

i thought the show was good
mary needs to let it go and quit sounding like a cow that's in labor

ashanti needs a new stylist and some dance moves that swaying form side to side is getting old

beyonce tore up dangerously in love

queen latifah held it down for the volumptious women

chaka khan hell what can i say she chaka

celene dion could have done bettet with her hair

jewel needs some rhythm in her

whitney let it go your voice is gone boo i almost cried hearing her sing i was like what the f%$k

Ever since the Diana Ross "DIVAS" the whole thing has gone to chit. Ok here I go on the night(and ROFL at whoever said Whitney looked like an underweight sun!lol)

http://www.vh1.com/sitewide/img/pg/main/6285.jpg
Beyonce could of left Jewel out of proud mary. Beyonce was shaking it only like a sister could and Jewel was up there barely shaking a leg:rolleyes:

http://www.vh1.com/sitewide/img/pg/main/6310.jpg
Ok I've always noticed that Mary J will have on a cute outfit, and wear something a little bit XTRA to mess it up. She look like a ghetto Sherlock Holmes in this pic, why Mary why?

http://www.vh1.com/sitewide/img/pg/main/6305.jpg
What Mary is thinking: Why the hell is Chaka in this too tight outfit?

What Chaka is thinking: Please don't let her get the holy ghost tonight lawd.

http://www.vh1.com/sitewide/img/pg/main/6302.jpg
Ok I was looking forward to Lisa singing her new song cause I like it, but was I the only one that wished she had pulled her pants up a little bit? she looked like she couldn't walk properly.

http://www.vh1.com/sitewide/img/pg/main/6297.jpg
Even though I think she put too much on it(was I the only one hearing feedback in the mic?) Sistagirl did her thang that night. I really do think she is a diva in the making after last night. And I am one of the ones that really ain't feeling Beyonce like that(how did Jay-Z get her?)

http://www.vh1.com/sitewide/img/pg/main/6296.jpg
Ashanti's performance:

"I'm that lady!" (repeat 1000 times)

and "Aw baby"/"I just wanna rock with you" (repeat 1000 times)

Ashanti and Beyonce looked like twins last night with their curly weaves.

When I saw Bobby's crackhead self do a skip across the stage at the start of the song, I was HOLLERIN!!!LOLLOL

My favorite dress of the night was that red number Latifah had on, she was wearing the hell outta that dress!

That dress was HOT!!

Umm I thought the same thing about Mary's "Sherlock Holmes" outfit.

Lisa Marie surprisingly did much better than I thought.

Was I the only one annoyed as all hell by Aisha Tyler's presence.

This was my very first Divas Live. I wonder when will Angie Stone, Jill Scott, and Kelly Price get their turns? Or have they already "been there done that." How come India was not on last night, you know Stevie is her ROLE MODEL.

DELTAQTE 05-23-2003 11:42 PM

okkkkkayyyyyyyyyyyyy????

When the hell are we gonna get some real divas? Erykah, Jill(she was featured in one a few years ago and TOE UP "A long walk"), heck even Tamia who isn't as big could outsing half of them.

And they need to make a male version of DIVAS, cause the past few have featured men.

They did have a male version of DIVAS a few years back. I can't remember the name but it wasn't that good. I think it featured either the Backstreet Boys or N*Sync.

GRITS 05-24-2003 12:07 AM

Maybe it's just me, but I really do like Beyonce and she tore up that song last night hmmm. was she singing to Jay-Z? Whoever these womens stylist are, they should be ashamed(except latifah) they all looked liked rag dolls with trains, and chaka needs real help.;) :) :D

RedefinedDiva 05-24-2003 01:46 PM

I used to not feel Beyonce too much, but I am starting to like her. I watched her bio on "Driven" (VH1) and I kind of have new insight into her. I can't hate.

Mary made my stomach hurt with her performance. She sounded horrible and I think she knew it. Therefore, she thought that hse would just drill it in by screaming to the high Heavens. Mary, one word, NO!!!

I missed most of the show but I will catch a repeat.
