WHY CAN'T TORI GO?

Some people skip their high school reunions because they're fat or unsuccessful or they don't want to run into the people who were mean to them. Svelte TORI SPELLING won't attend the Beverly Hills, 90210 10-year high school-reunion show, airing on Fox May 11, because "she's moved on," ( moved on......to what? )her publicist says. Some press reports, however, have said the daughter of series creator Aaron Spelling is angry that Fox won't give her a pilot and bitter toward tempestuous former co-star Shannen Doherty, who is appearing on the program. The reunion will include interviews with Jason Priestley, Luke Perry, Doherty and others talking about their auditions and "what the show has meant for establishing their careers as successful actors," according to a Fox press release. That part of the special promises to be fairly short. (*LOL*)

THE BLUEPRINT PART III: THE SNEAKERS

When you're a filthy-rich rapper romancing the fetching lead singer of Destiny's Child, kids want to walk in your shoes. But when JAY-Z's sneaker line, the first from a nonathlete, became the fastest-selling shoe in Reebok history ( gees its just Reebok....when was the last time YOU bought a pair....j/k)last week, desperate kids proved willing to pay more than twice the retail price of $100 for the privilege. The first shoe in the "S. Carter collection by RbK" (Jay-Z's real name is Shawn Carter) sold out in 10 cities. The sneaker is just the latest offering from the unabashedly commercial rapper; his clothing line and vodka are already in stores, and more footwear is due in July. One product idea: Jay-Z's mighty bootstraps.

(5/5/03, 1 p.m. ET) -- New York radio personality Funkmaster Flex--whose real name is Aston George Taylor Jr.--agreed to pay $4000 DAYUM! a month in child support on Wednesday (April 30), for his two year-old son, Dante, after a DNA test proved he was the child's father.

Flex, who is married to Monica Joseph and has one-and-a-half year-old daughter Jayden, initially denied that he was the child's father when approached by the child's mother, Haydee Diaz.

Diaz, who met Flex in 1998, maintains that he told her he was single. Diaz only learned Flex was married after reading it in the local paper. Diaz told the New York's Daily News, "I was naive."

According to court documents, Flex earned $200,000 last year.

Diaz's attorney Suzanne Kimberly Bracker explained how child support works in the New York courts. "And in New York state we have something called the Child Support Guidelines which is we look at the first $80,000 of combined parental income and we apply for this particular case it would be 17 percent and then anything above his income past and the combined parental income of $80,000 is discretionary with the court," Bracker said.

In addition to his radio gig, Funkmaster Flex has released four albums in his Mixtape series on Loud Records, each of which have sold more than 500,000 copies. In December 1999, Flex and his partner Big Kap released The Tunnel on Def Jam Records, and that set went gold as well.

Funkmaster Flex also owns and operates Franchise Records & Promotions and Team Baurtwell Racing, and has several endorsement deals with companies such as Nike and Lugz. Flex is also slated to host his own show on custom cars on TNN.

Winfrey Eyes Two More Years of 'Oprah' Talk

Tue May 06, 1:34 AM ET

She's back -- or at least not going away anytime soon.

Oprah Winfrey has had a change of heart about wrapping up her syndicated talk show in the 2005-06 season and is close to finalizing a deal to renew her show for two more seasons, through the 2007-08 season, with distributor King World Prods. and the core ABC-owned stations that carry the show, sources said Monday.

Negotiations have been quietly taking place for several weeks among King World, Winfrey and the seven ABC outlets that form the backbone of the talk show's affiliate station base. But it was reportedly not a shoo-in for the ABC stations as the CBS-owned stations, King World's corporate siblings under the Viacom umbrella, were understood to have made a significant bid to land "The Oprah Winfrey Show (news - Y! TV)" in 2006.

It is understood that the ABC stations re-upping, including the group's flagships -- WABC New York, KABC Los Angeles and WLS Chicago -- are paying significantly higher license fees to lock in the highest-rated talk show in syndication.

Winfrey made it clear last year that she was bowing out of the show when she committed to host until the end of the 2005-06 season. That decision sent syndication program development executives scrambling and put stations actively on the lookout for replacements; ergo, her decision to stay on for at least an extra two years will also have a ripple effect throughout the syndication business.

For instance, it had been speculated that Buena Vista Television, which is corporately aligned to the ABC station group under the Walt Disney Co., was anticipating that its daytime strip "The Wayne Brady Show" might move into the "Oprah" slots on the ABC stations in time. It is also understood that Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution was anticipating an opportunity to open up some real estate in "Oprah" time periods for its upcoming talk show "Ellen," hosted by Ellen DeGeneres .

It is not clear what the situation will be with the King World-syndicated hit talk show "Dr. Phil," hosted by Dr. Phil McGraw. McGraw came to prominence on "Oprah," and Winfrey's company Harpo Prods. created the concept of his show. A noncompete clause currently prevents stations from airing "Dr. Phil" directly against "Oprah." Most, if not all, "Dr. Phil" stations assumed that when "Oprah" went away, they would be able to move "Dr. Phil" into key new time periods. It is understood that the noncompete clause will continue to apply to the "Dr. Phil" stations when they come to renew through 2008. "Dr. Phil" is being renewed for the 2004-05 and 2005-06 seasons and is sold in 95% of the country through 2006.

The latest round of renewals not only puts "Oprah" in a ballgame of its own in terms of license fees but catapults it into a new league altogether. The one-hour strip is known to command license fees of more than $300,000 a week in New York and Los Angeles and grosses an estimated $300 million a year for King World.

Produced by Harpo Prods., the Chicago-based "Oprah" has consistently ranked as daytime's top-rated talk show since its debut in 1986, other than for a brief moment when "The Jerry Springer Show" managed a look in at the top of the syndication talk rankings in the 1998-99 season. Over that period, Winfrey has become an international superstar and entrepreneur, delving into television, production and a Winfrey-branded monthly magazine. Her talk show boasts an average audience of about 26 million viewers a week.

King World declined comment Monday, while a Winfrey spokeswoman did not return a call seeking comment.

112 Team Up With Sean Paul, Hope To Work With Ghostface Killah

From mtv.com

According to R&B group 112, the politically correct answer as to why they decided to part ways with P. Diddy and Bad Boy last year was the lack of money and attention.

But when talking to MTV News last week, Q, Mike, Slim and Daron said the real reason was because their contract was "doo-doo." Needless to say, they're happy to be signed to Def Jam.

"Just to get that feeling [that] somebody actually believes in you ... [is great]," Mike said recently. "You could tell they feel that they really got something when they got 112. It was a great acquisition for them. The whole vibe is just different. It feels good to know you left one situation and got a better situation."

The group has not entirely severed ties with Puff and Bad Boy, however. Earlier this year it was announced that Bad Boy and Def Jam would be working together to put out 112's projects (see "P. Diddy, Def Jam CEO Lyor Cohen Kiss And Make Up, Go Into Business Together"). For the last few months they've been working in Nashville at a studio owned by country music superstar Reba McIntire and should have an album in stores come August.

"I guess the way they split their money up is a joint venture, but as far as 112, [we're at] Def Jam," Mike said of the deal brokered by Diddy and Island Def Jam head honcho Lyor Cohen. "We still work with [Diddy] as far as getting ideas. We got three joints from his camp. It's no bad blood, it's no love lost."

In fact, the guys said Diddy will appear on their fourth album via a "sexy" and "freaky" cut called "Hot and Sexy" that gives off the same vibe as their popular hit "Peaches & Cream." Atlanta MC T.I., who raps on Bone Crusher's "Never Scared," as well as Joe Budden, make cameos.

"Basically the recording since the first album pretty much has been the same," Daron noted. "Most of the hits we either wrote or produced ourselves. If we did work with a producer ? OK, this guy would do a track, drop it in the studio with us and when we come out, it's a hit. It's pretty much the same. We went to Nashville, created a skeleton of the album and pulled in other producers around the end."

"It's just a variety of music," Mike added. "We have songs that touch home and speak on what happened to us in the music industry, what happened with us at Bad Boy. We're touching on real personal subjects, but we're still keeping it fun, keeping it ghetto.

"The single is [out] in June," he continued. "It's called 'Na, Na, Na.' It features Sean Paul. It's like an ATL [meets] reggae track. You won't see it coming from 112. Even though we push the envelope with a lot of records like 'Peaches & Cream' and 'Anywhere,' this record is really to the left of 112. Not all the way to the left, but it feels like it can be a mesh between dancehall and that Southern feel we have."

Given how hard the group reps ATL, recording in Nashville might have seemed like a bit of a departure. But this marks the second time the group has recorded in the Ville (their third LP, Room 112, was recorded there), and the bandmembers felt that working outside of their hometown and Miami, a hangout spot, prevented them from having too many distractions.

"It was the closest to Atlanta without being in Atlanta," Mike explained. "If [we] recorded in Atlanta, we would still be recording the album right now. We thought about Miami, but we knew we'd still be working on the album now. We wouldn't have even finished a song yet. Our whole independence was established in Nashville, so we was like, 'Let's do it again.' Nashville is like three and half hours from Atlanta, [so] we could still go home on weekends. But we had to get away from Atlanta. Plus, [there's] nothing to do [in Nashville] but record."

Perhaps 112 shouldn't speak too soon, as they may still have to go down to Miami to record. Ghostface Killah is held up down there working on his next soulful opus, and the bathrobe-wearing manipulator of rhyme has been in talks to get the group on his album.

"That would be hot," Slim said, delighted. "[Wu-Tang Clan] are some of the pioneers in hip-hop. We've worked with the best of them, like Biggie, and now you talking about somebody in the Wu-Tang? That would be hot."

Murder Inc. Probe Leads To Arrest, Alleged Ties To 50 Cent Shooting

From mtv.com

More than four months after federal investigators searched the New York offices of Murder Inc. Records, an arrest has been made in connection with their findings and newly unsealed court documents have revealed just what suspicions prompted the raid.

Last week, following the stakeout of a house in Encino, California, U.S. Marshals arrested Dexter Ottley, Murder Inc.'s director of radio promotions, and charged him with possession of a firearm by a felon. Also arrested at the time was Murder Inc. artist Caddillac Tah, who was not charged and was later released.

But while Ottley may be the only person arrested from the Murder Inc. family thus far, he might not be the last. In a 32-page affidavit filed in U.S. District Court in January, an IRS special agent details some of the evidence that feds have compiled in their ongoing investigation of convicted drug lord Kenneth "Supreme" McGriff and his relationship with Murder Inc.

The document charges that McGriff, who has a storied past as the leader of infamous New York drug cartel the Supreme Team, is the "true owner" of Murder Inc., while CEO Irv Gotti is merely the "public face" of the highly successful label. Supporting that theory are allegations that McGriff was paid by Murder Inc. under a false name, that he conducted illegal activity using Murder Inc. travel funds and a Def Jam two-way pager, and that McGriff was directly involved in the 2000 shooting of rapper 50 Cent, who is described as having written "a song exposing McGriff's criminal activities."

Investigators compiled evidence ranging from Supreme's business bank records, all of his two-way messages from the past three years, travel records, surveillance and even the testimony of two confidential witnesses. One of the witnesses is said to have observed McGriff's comings and goings within the Murder Inc. offices.

The court affidavit was filed in order to get permission to freeze McGriff's business accounts. The investigation of McGriff and Murder Inc. is still ongoing and neither McGriff nor Gotti has been charged with anything (see "Drugs, Friends & Allegations: Inside The Murder Inc. Raid").

Meanwhile, the incredible scrutiny of federal agents seems to have had an effect on Murder Inc.'s music. According to Murder Inc. artist Blackchild, an apparent slip up on Ja Rule's recent anti-50 Cent track "Loose Change" was more calculated than clumsy. Blackchild insisted to MTV News that when Ja raps, "50, you gon' get shot again by the M-U-R-E-D-R Inc.," he misspells the name of his label in order to avoid making a self-incriminating statement.

Okay, this is getting out of hand! Did they not learn what happens when it goes to far, i.e. Biggie and Tupac?

Actress Nell Carter Died Naturally
Tue May 6, 2:36 PM ET

LOS ANGELES - Nell Carter (news), who played the sassy housekeeper on the 1980s TV sitcom "Gimme a Break!" died of natural causes, the coroner's office said Tuesday.

An autopsy and toxicological tests determined the death was natural because of probable heart disease and diabetes complications, said coroner's Capt. Deborah Peterson.

Carter died Jan. 23 at age 54 after collapsing in her Beverly Hills home. She had undergone two brain operations in 1992 to fix aneurysms.

Blessed with a big voice and a strong stage presence despite her 4-foot-11 height, she won a Tony Award in 1978 for her sultry turn in the Broadway musical "Ain't Misbehavin'" and an Emmy in 1982 for a TV broadcast of the show, which was a revue of Fats Waller songs. Her quietly soulful number "Mean to Me" was a show highlight.

Carter received two more Emmy nominations in 1982 and 1983 for "Gimme a Break!" playing a housekeeper to a family headed by a widower who was the town police chief. The show ran from 1981 to 1987.

She also played the cruel orphanage operator Miss Hannigan in the 1997 Broadway revival of "Annie" and appeared in the movies "The Grass Harp" (1995), "Modern Problems" (1981) and "Hair" (1979).

'Welcome, Back Kotter' Actor Arrested

By The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES - Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs, who played Freddie "Boom Boom" Washington on the '70s sitcom "Welcome, Back Kotter," was arrested for investigation of misdemeanor domestic battery for allegedly pushing a woman to the ground during an argument, police said.

Hilton-Jacobs was roller-skating with the 42-year-old woman at Venice Beach when two officers heard a commotion about 2:30 p.m. Sunday, investigated and arrested the actor, police spokeswoman Grace Brady said. Brady said there were no visible injuries to the alleged victim, whose name was not released.

Hilton-Jacobs was booked, with bond set at $20,000, and was released from custody late Monday.

The 49-year-old didn't immediately return a call Tuesday for comment placed through his agent, Fran Tolstonog.

Hilton-Jacobs also appeared in the 1970s films "Claudine" and "Cooley High" and in the TV miniseries "Roots."

Rapper 50 Cent Sued by New York Doctor

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A New York surgeon is suing rapper 50 Cent alleging he owes more than $32,000 in fees for the treatment of gunshot wounds nearly three years ago.

According to the civil complaint filed in Manhattan Supreme Court on Tuesday, 50 Cent, who also is known as Curtis Jackson, and friend Charles Johnson showed up at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center in the New York borough of Queens on May 24, 2000, "with multiple gunshot wounds."

No one has been arrested for that shooting and the legal document does not say how many wounds 50 Cent suffered.

The complaint alleges that the surgeon, Nader Paksima treated 50 Cent for the gunshot wounds, including the use of X-rays and post-surgical treatment both in the emergency room and hospital.

"Despite repeated requests for payment to date, the sum of $32,511.87 ... remains due and owing," said Christopher Galiardo, the surgeon's lawyer.

"My client feels that 50 Cent has prospered and moved on with his career since the shooting. Dr. Paksima found 50 Cent to be a nice, charismatic man and we are hopeful he will settle this before going to trial," the lawyer said.

The 27-year-old rapper's attorney in the civil matter, Mark Gann, did not return calls for comment.

A protege of Eminem (news - web sites) and slain hip hop pioneer Jam Master Jay, 50 Cent has bragged in interviews to promote his CD "Get Rich or Die Tryin"' that he was once a crack cocaine dealer and has been shot nine times.

In January, 50 Cent was arrested with four other men on weapons possession charges after police found two loaded guns in their car. He faces up to 15 years behind bars if convicted on the weapons charge.

Juvenile No "Azz" Grabber
Tue May 6, 7:45 PM ET Add Entertainment - E! Online to My Yahoo!

By Marcus Errico

Juvenile's "Azz" is safe.

The hip-hopster has been cleared in federal court of swiping his signature hit, "Back that Azz Up," from a rival New Orleans rapper known as DJ Jubilee.

In a ruling handed down Monday in New Orleans, the five-man, one-woman federal jury found that Juvenile (real name: Terius Gray) had come up with the hugely popular track on his own and didn't rip-off Jubilee's like-titled "Back that Ass Up."

Jubilee, aka Jerome Temple, and his label, Positive Black Talk Inc., had filed the federal copyright-infringement suit against Juvenile, Cash Money Records and Universal Music claiming he masterminded the song in 1997 and released it on the album Take It to the St. Thomas in April 1998--seven months before Juvenile's version came out on the 400 Degreez disc.

The five-day trial played out with both rappers offering their side of the story (Juvenile said he first used the catchphrase "back that ass up" at a 1997 party attended by Jubilee) and both camps calling respective experts. Jubilee tapped a University of New Orleans professor who testified the songs were "exactly the same," while Juvenile had a Tulane University musicologist say that aside from the titles, "the songs are not that similar."

Ultimately the jury sided with the Juvenile. Jubliee, 37, is weighing an appeal.

According to New Orleans' Times-Picayune, Jubilee is a local artist known for hosting block parties and putting out "bounce" records, a New Orleans specialty combining rap, singsong and call-and-response refrains and accompanied by suggestive dance steps.

The Times-Picayune says Jubilee, who works as a high school special education teacher, has often told interviewers that his music has been regularly pilfered by others. Although popular in the Big Easy, Jubilee has never crossed over into mainstream success, like Juvenile.

On the flipside, Juvenile, the most prominent member of Louisiana's Cash Money collective, rode his "Azz" track to multiplatinum fame. His follow-up, Project English, opened at number two on the charts in 2001.

Since then, Juvenile's legal squad has been keeping plenty busy. In February, the 28-year-old rapper was sentenced to 75 hours' community service after pleading guilty to charges of aggravated battery, battery on a law enforcement officer, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, stemming from a 2001 incident in which he knocked a man unconscious with a Moet champagne bottle and grabbing a police officer outside a Miami comedy club.

Days earlier, Juvenile was rung up on cociane and marijuana possession charges after small amounts of the drugs were found in a car the rapper and three pals were riding in (all four men were charged). His lawyer, Morton Fry, called it a wrong-place, wrong-time situation and said Juvenile will be found innocent.

Fry also says that Juvenile will be vindicated in yet another incident, this one occurring last September and featuring the rapper allegedly slugging it out with a barber. Juvenile apparently thought the hair cutter bootlegged and sold tapes of his music. He and two pals are accused of beating up the barber and then making off with $200.

I don't see the problem because the situation is not how it seems. Jubilee has always been a DJ. He has not always been a teacher. He attended Grambling (2D's alma mater ;) ) and DJed. He makes some of the best bounce/party songs in N.O. He later became a teacher (he used to just be a sub).

I don't see the problem with him making his songs. Jubilee's song "Back That Azz Up" is nothing like Juvenile's. Jubilee's song came out a long time before Juvenile's. Jubilee doesn't make songs that are out the way like Juvenile's because he knows that children listen to his music. He makes fun songs. It's just dance music. I hope he makes another song for the summer.... :)

She is a little bit wacky on "Soul Food." Mekhi knows that there still isn't any excuse to cheat on the woman. He is down bad for that.

Jubilee was at Gram when I was there too. Notice the Krimson and Kream I added to his name. :o

Anyway, Jubilee works well with the students he has (if it's special olympics, summer school (where he gives them a free concert at the close EVERY year or whatever), he is always there for those kids. This isn't what I've heard...it's what I have seen. (We service the same populations) They look up to him.
Whatever he does away from school, that's on him. Now, if he is having the kids to get drug para from his car during the school day-on school grounds (this happened to a local teacher yesterday) then I'd have a problem with that.

Yeah, RD....JUBILEE was robbed. Juvie knows it too. Only those of us who REALLY know his music and the local music can attest. It's just that the powers that be don't know. :o

Vandross Not Breathing On His Own
Thu May 8, 7:45 PM ET Add Entertainment - E! Online to My Yahoo!

By Lia Haberman

Earlier Thursday, there seemed to be a bit of good news about Luther Vandross' prognosis--his publicist announced that the R&B soul man was finally breathing on his own after being felled by a stroke last month.

But hopes for a quick recovery were dashed hours later, when publicist Lois Najarian said the information was incorrect, and the singer still required assistance to breathe.

Relaying a message from Vandross' mother about the perceived improvement, Najarian initially told the Associated Press this morning that the singer no longer needed a tube in his throat to breathe. That proved incorrect, the publicist now says.

"There's been no radical change in his condition," his publicist, Lois Najarian, tells the AP. The 52-year-old remains unconscious and in critical condition in the intensive care unit at a New York City hospital.

The "Here and Now" singer was stricken in his Manhattan home April 16. Vandross wasn't discovered until hours later and was then rushed to Weill-Cornell Medical College, where he was listed in critical but stable condition.

According to his manager, Vandross' convalescence has been slow, hampered by a bout of pneumonia that caused a buildup of fluid in his lungs and labored breathing.

As a result, doctors were forced to perform a tracheotomy last week, inserting a tube through an opening in Vandross' throat to help him breathe easier.

Mary & Puffy

Dr. Dre recently reconnected with Mary J. Blige and produced a track for her album Love and Life, but it's the singer's reunion with another studio Svengali that has M.J.B. and the faithful fans that have supported her for over 10 years smiling the most.

"My whole mission was to touch the audience that made me, the My Life audience, the What's the 411? audience," Blige explained on Thursday in New York. "In doing that [I wanted] to bring back my partner, my brother in this music business, Sean 'P. Diddy' Combs. I can't say that something came and told me [to work with him]. It just was all in the universe and he gave me a call letting me know that it was in the universe for him, too.

"He called, he said he wanted to co-executive produce my next album with me," she added. "I said fine, because Puffy and I have always worked great together."

M.J.B. isn't just tooting her own horn — she's speaking the gospel if you ask many hip-hop and R&B fans. Her first two albums, which Diddy oversaw, are hailed as classics. In fact, Mary said she didn't stop working with Diddy after 1994's My Life because of anything that happened in the studio: It was because of her reckless lifestyle.

"The reason we split up is me not understanding the business the way I needed to understand it at the time," she explained. "He had a label, he had a female artist, he had Biggie, but during the time I was really dogging myself. I was a mess on drugs. Any smart man or businessman would have moved away from me. It felt like he was becoming distant, but looking back, I now understand why. I wasn't delivering properly. I wasn't taking care of my health, so how can he roll his dice on me?"

The separation from Diddy worked in Mary's favor in a roundabout way. She gained a sense of independence and took more control of her musical direction, which didn't stick solely with Puffy's hip-hop/R&B hybrid theory.

"I never doubted myself, but I've always been insecure with my ability to do certain things because I lose some of my vocal abilities from smoking and drinking and doing drugs," she continued. "It was like, 'You know what, I'm going to go ahead and do it without you.' It was easy, but the streets and everybody's opinions is what made things so hard — 'Oh, she's not with Puff no more, she can't do it without Puff no more.' "

Obviously both Mary and P.D. have been successful without each other, but both started to think about joining forces again after recording a remix to Mary's "No More Drama" in 2001. During her No More Drama tour the same year, she started to notice how strong a reaction she would get from audiences while performing her hits off of her debut and sophomore LPs and when special guest Diddy would join her onstage.

"The response they gave us let us know we needed to do it again," Mary said. "[Working on the album] was just, 'Hey, I'm back and I understand you now. I've always loved you and I'm glad you're back in my life.' It was like nothing has ever changed. We still think the same but we have grown up. We still have the same arguments but now we understand how to [better resolve them]" (see "Mary J. Blige Teams Up With 50 Cent, P. Diddy To Discuss Love And Life").

Mary says she has new love songs for the ladies who have the same type of fights with their boyfriends and husbands that she experienced in her life. "Basically I said 'No More Drama' for myself," she said of her last album's premise and title. "But there is still a lot of drama for a lot of other women. The songs that are on there are about, OK, how long are you gonna let this guy beat your head off? There are songs like 'Not Today,' meaning, 'we're not having it today.' 'All of My Love' is about what I'm gonna give. Everything in me is what I'm going to give, because he's given it to me."

Although a few tracks, such as "When We Make Love" and "Let Me Be the One," which features 50 Cent, have hit mixtapes, Love and Life's official first single will be "Love at First Sight," which talks about her soul mate. The two had a chance to really bond one night while talking at a nightclub.

"The guy I'm with now was love at first sight," Mary explained. "There was something familiar about his spirit. It's almost like you've seen him somewhere before but you have not seen him before. This person connects with you. It definitely was not a physical thing, it was something else there. It was like I was looking at me."

Among the producers on the album are Tony Dofat, Mario Winans, Deric "D-Dot" Angelettie and Dr. Dre, who produced "Not Today," which boasts a guest spot from Eve.

Outside of her LP,Mary co-wrote a track with Chaka Khan for her next project.

Mary also wrote two tunes for the upcoming Aretha Franklin album. Love and Life is scheduled to drop in August.

Patti LaBelle No Longer Endorses Hormone-Replacement Drug
Sat May 10,12:00 AM ET

LAUNCH Radio Networks

R&B's Patti LaBelle has revealed that she's no longer using the controversial hormone-replacement drug for menopausal women that she used to endorse in television commercials.

LaBelle said: "I felt really, really bad when I heard the news that it was dangerous so I haven't used my hormone replacement therapy, my Prempro, for about maybe a year since that controversy happened."

Prempro is prescribed to women with moderate to severe menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats and for the prevention of osteoporosis.

The most common side effects include post-menopausal bleeding, hair loss and breast pain. However the potential--and controversial--increased risks include heart attack, stroke, breast cancer (news - web sites) and blood clots.

LaBelle said she didn't know that taking the medication carried such risks when she made commercials for the drug she once took regularly.

LaBelle said: "I hope the folk don't think that I knew that it wasn't credible because the reason I did the commercials is because I used it. I'd been using it forever."

LaBelle also said that she's presently not using any medication to deal with her "private summers," the singer's phrase for hot flashes related to menopause.

LaBelle's natural approach to good health also includes eating better to deal with her recently-diagnosed diabetes as she further explains in her latest cookbook, Patti LaBelle (news)'s Lite Cuisine

USA Today reports Janet Jackson told her sister LaToya at the Kentucky Derby how excited she was to be with boyfriend Jermaine Dupri. "I'm so attached," Janet said as she rushed back to his side. Janet flew in with Dupri's family, her personal trainer and chef. Meanwhile, LaToya told the paper she plans on returning next year for the big horse race. "This is so amazing," she said. "I'm coming back next year, maybe with (brother) Michael as my date." Janet admits that she wasn't as lucky as her sister in picking the winner. "I'm not winning. I normally don't do this, so I am not really sure who to bet," Janet said.

Various Tidbits

From mtv.com:
Sean Paul shot the video for his next single, "Like Glue," on Monday night in the East New York section of Brooklyn. Benny Boom directed the shots, which were filmed at the Elite Arc Nightclub. ... :D I LOVE this song!
The song "Rosa Parks" is continuing to haunt Outkast members Andre 3000 and Big Boi. While a lawsuit filed against the duo by the civil-rights legend for using her name for their 1998 cut was dismissed in 1999, a panel of three judges overturned the ruling on Monday.

Jay-Z is filming the video for his "Bad Boys 2" soundtrack cut, "La, La, La (Excuse Me Again)," on Wednesday at an undisclosed location. Chris Robinson will direct.

A monument to Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes will be erected on land the TLC rapper purchased in the Honduran town of La Ceiba before she was killed in a car accident there a year ago. The memorial will be unveiled on May 27. ...

Michael Jackson, who went to war last year with Sony Music, is now suing his old record label Motown, seeking unpaid royalties and rights to his catalog. The lawsuit, filed on Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court, accuses Motown Records and its Universal Music parent company of reneging on the terms of a 1980 agreement that settled an acrimonious split from Motown by Jackson and his brothers in 1976. ...

Stevie Wonder, Musiq, Erykah Badu and Babyface are scheduled to join
P. Diddy, Nappy Roots, Jaheim and Maze, among others, at the three-day
Essence Music Festival. Taking place July 3-5 at New Orleans' Superdome, the festival covers five stages and will be emceed by a variety of hosts including Jamie Foxx and A.J. Jamal. Previously announced appearances by Nelly and the St. Lunatics and Luther Vandross have been canceled, as Vandross remains hospitalized following last month's stroke and Nelly is spearheading a national bone-marrow drive to save the life of his sister Jackie Donahue, who is suffering from leukemia. Various other celebrities will be involved in the "Jes Us 4 Jackie" program, which will set up nine donor test locations on June 21 in New York, Los Angeles and Nelly's stomping grounds of St. Louis. The drive will be publicized in public service announcements on radio and television.

Rodman marries girlfriend, but won't live with her

Associated Press

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. -- Former NBA star Dennis Rodman has doubled up on his celebrations. He married girlfriend Michelle Moyer Tuesday -- on his 42nd birthday.

The Los Angeles Times says it was a private civil ceremony in Newport Beach. Rodman says the "real wedding" will take place June 14 on the beach in front of his house.

Rodman says "everybody's invited" to the ceremony and a concert. That may not be great news for police, who have been called to his home more than 70 times because of loud parties.

Rodman and Moyer have two children together but live in separate homes. They don't plan to change that either. Rodman says, "I like it like that. She and the kids come over on weekends."

GRITS 05-14-2003 12:06 PM

HUH???? Why get married, if you are not going to live together, but that is Dennis Rodman for ya!
