i got mono the summer before my senior year of college. sucked big ole donkey balls. i was such a huge alcoholic then that i practically went through withdrawl. i still went to the bar, i just didn't drink. and i still hooked up with guys, just didn't kiss them.
see this is the time that i was hanging out with the bar staff and didn't really even go out til 3am when they all got off work. hated being sick. i did have to rest almost all the time if i wanted to go out at night. once classes started i had to give up the bars almost completely in order to go to class. honestly though, i've been way worse sickness wise. two days after my graduation i was in the hospital with a temp of 104, couldn't swallow or speak at all. i was dehydrated and delusional. they had to hook me up to an iv, shoot me up with steriods and an antibiotic. (steriod to help my body's nature defenses fight off the virus and antibiotics to kick out any bacterial infection present). thank God i got better within a few days cuz i was leaving for mexico two days after the hospital. oh by the way, never go tanning when you have that kind of fever. shelley j sigma k |
oh, one more thing. Epstine Bar is something that is terminal. it's also different than chronic fatigue syndrome.
a man i know has it and can't do anything. in his bad times he can't even get out of bed to go to the bathroom. he has one of the worst reported cases in the state of pennsylvania. someone else can verify what causes it, but i'm pretty sure it's more on the side of genetic. i could be wrong though. also, there is no treatment for it. shelley j sigma k ps - oh yeah, mono does affect the spleen very much so. that's one of the main reasons you shouldn't drink alcohol when you have mono. also, your body can't heal itself as well when you have alcohol in your system. that's why they say don't drink when taking antibiotics. it negates the effects of the antibiotics in your system. also the reason they tell you to sleep so much when you have mono is b/c your immune system is much more active when you are asleep. |
Nope never had mono....
If I did, I probably wouldn't realize it. I hardly ever get sick, and I never even had the flu until I was 22. Even then my dad had to tell me. I thought it was just a cold.

Mono
Dani- glad to hear you don't have it, but I wanted to add my story.
After fall semester my freshman year my mom and I went bra shopping. I went into a fitting room and couldn't reach my arms around to hook the hooks and my mom had to do it for me. My arms and legs ached so much. When we got home she called the dr who said that it sounded like a flu that was going around, so I went with it. When I went back to school I was tired and had really big bags under my eyes. My throat was killing me and every part of my body hurt. I went to the health care center and they tested me for strep and mono. The strep came back positive and the PA said that if my tonsils didn't shrink I was going to suffocate  because I couldn't breath through my nose or mouth. I went back to the dorm really upset and told my roommate what was up. The mono test wasn't supposed to come in for a few days though. She went and told the head RA of the dorm that I had mono and the head RA came and told me I would have to leave. I told him the results weren't in and I would let him know as soon as I did. I went back a few days later and they said that the test showed that I had mono but to rest and come back a few days later. I went back a few days later and that test showed that I was at the end of the mono. They think I had it for a few months but was already on the back end of it. I let my roommate know as soon as I got home and never spoke to her again. My tonsils were never the same after that. Before that I had strep maybe 5 times my whole life. After the mono I had tonsilitis every 3 weeks. It got so frustrating that my Junior year I had my tonsils taken out. My spleen was never enlarged though. For years after that if I didn't take care of myself I would get really tired for weeks. Even now in law school I feel like it creeps up on me again. That's my story. Sorry it's long. ;) C :D |
I got mono the week before finals last year. I thought I had strep; I had been feeling pretty sick for a couple weeks but just put off going to our health center because they are horrible. I woke up on a saturday barely able to move or speak. I walked to the health center in my pajamas, was told that I had tonsilitis, and probably mono. My strep test had come back negative, and since mono takes at least a week to appear in your bloodstream, they gave me a ton of vicadon and told me to come back in a week. Helpful.....riiiight. So basically I couldn't move or function-I was tired ALL the time and pretty much just slept. You often have something that accompanies mono-like strep of tonisilitis. Mine got to the point where I was coughing up blood, (sorry) I went to the hospital and they gave me a mono test which came back positive. I requested a steroid shot to liven me up a bit so I could make it through finals. They refused; my mom kidnapped from my dorm and made me come home to rest so I ended up having to take my finals over the summer and I never got to say good-bye to all the dorm friends! I still have no idea how I got it, the guy who I was dating at the time didnt get it. Hope you dont have it~it can be a MAJOR pain!!!

I had it when I was 15-16 (had it for my Sweet 16, oh fun), and I had a pretty mild case. I wasn't tired, I just had the sore throat from hell and a fever. I stayed home for a week but I was better by the 2nd day. I was absolutely bored out of mind and was begging my parents to let me go back to school (how sad is that?).
I was kind of bad and went roller blading a lot when I had it, but I stayed away from soccer and lifting heavy stuff for 2 months. Some people just don't have it all that bad. |
Is mono what happens when you get blisters down in the genital area?

right......i think you need to see a doctor stat. lol :D
shelley j sigma k ps - if you aren't really joking then you seriously need help. |
I had mono during my junior year of high school. It totally sucked, I couldn't do ANYTHING but sleep. I was going to school for just half days and I usually fell asleep there too. It was horrible and it seemed like it took me forever to get over it. And like some of you said earlier, I still to this day don't feel 100% good ever. If my sleep schedule gets messed up just a little even it takes me forever to get back on track.
