This matter is really very simple - it's called making a judgment call and being willing to accept the positive or negative consequences.

If Moxie prizes her individuality/fashion sense/personal statement to the extent that she refuses to compromise a simple nose ring during the rush process...more power to her! Everyone is free to dress as they wish at rush.

However, if she keeps it, she MUST accept that she is more likely to be cut. That's just a hard fact of life. She may not have a bid, but she'll have her "individuality" and a nose ring.

It all depends on what she values. Does she value having the opportunity to be a part of a sorority? Or does she value her personal style as expressed through her choice in accessories?

Navane -- Girl, I could not have said it any better myself! You hit the nail right on the head!!! Life is all about compromising for what you want -- very, very few situations in life allow you to get 100% of what you want without giving something up. That is just the way it is! Leave the nose ring at home when you rush at LSU!

Amen! And wait until you head into the real work world!!! Compromise compromise (except your values and morals)!

I was just looking through old threads and happened upon this one and I figured I'd put an ending on it.

After all the worry, Moxie had to get ready very quickly for her first round of rush parties and ended up forgetting to take out her nose ring!

And she's now an initiated member of the LSU chapter of Delta Zeta :) Yay, Mox! http://www.handykult.de/plaudersmili...ere/turtle.gif

this may sound kinda mean...but I am so glad she ended up in a house despite the fact she had her little nose ring, cuz this whole thread made me very sad to think how superficial and unattractive it made sorority girls in the south look...even if it's the "way it is", actually especially if that's how it is. :(

be true to yourself....

We have the same policy - all non-ear piercings have to come out for recruitment. It presents a better image of your chapter.
Personally, I say keep the nose ring in. Making a choice to do a facial piercing says something about your personality that won't change, regardless if the ring is in or out. If you've asked the question to wear it or not, it means you've thought about the potential for people at LSU to judge you based on this piercing, and I use the quote above about presenting a "better image" to question you and your motives for joining a sorority. Would you want to join a GLO that dictates their sisters remove their piercings to give themselves a "better image"? In their opinion, does that say that girls with piercings in general, have a lesser quality image? If that is the case, what would they think of you after you receive a bid. Do you suddenly drop down a notch in the "better image" social hierarchy?

I've known girls in the LSU sorority system, as well as many other Deep South colleges, and yes, I agree that the rush process is very cutthroat and your appearance will matter, so the nose ring is probably not the best choice, if you want to fit in with the other girls. However, are you so eager to join that you want to hide an aspect of your personality in order to be accepted? Friends come and go, but pride and self-acceptance are with you forever. Never compromise who you are in order to get others to like you. In about 5 years down the road, issues like nose rings and rush will just be a memory. Be true to yourself. Just my 2 cents!

ooops!

I just re-read the last thread and saw that this was an older post. I'm glad to see that she did leave the nose ring, even by "accident"...it says a lot about the girls who offered her a bid and it's nice to see that to some people, trivial issues like nose rings don't matter!

Congrats!

Just curious, kinda related, as composite pic time comes, do you have the nose, brow, lip etc rings edited out? We have a sister with a eyebrow ring and our composite photographer is editing it out...just curious.

Either the girls took them out or they didn't show up in our composite - not sure which.

Ginger 11-24-2003 01:16 PM

We required our girls to take out any non-ear piercings for composites.

TigerLilly 11-24-2003 04:30 PM

We only ever had one girl with an eyebrow piercing, and she didn't take it out for the composite. I don't think it was an issue.

random sidenote: I work at Chili's, and we DIDN'T hire a girl as a waitress last week because of her facial piercings.

great that Damamsa works in an environment where that kind of thing is accepted & encouraged..... but for the most part, I agree with the sentiment that rush is like a job interview. And most of us wouldn't wear facial piercings to a job interview.

I have a tongue ring and I wear mine to work and I always keep it in.
I have never been ask by an employer to take it while at work. In fact most of the time, people don't even notice it.
I know several people I work have one and several people have nose pirecings.

It all depends on who you work for. Just like I guess, it all depends on where you go through recruitment.
