Re: Re: USC rushes in the fall

Just so you know, GPhiBLtColonel is a GREAT resource. She really helped me when I went through rush last year, and I have a feeling her rec was one of the reasons I got such a warm reception from the Gamma Phi's. To this day, I wish I could have gone both houses, because all the GPhiB's I know are great! But we all end up where we are supposed to go! She is also right about the panhellenic association recs. That is where I got the majority of mine, and I think it helped. I'm sure you know, though, that they aren't really that big of a deal at USC, but they can't ever hurt. Also, if you are good friends with anyone currently in sororities outside of SC, they can always write you a letter of introduction. Most importantly, make sure that you contact Beth Saul at the USC panhellenic office so that you get the summer information packet. Unless you request it, she only sends it to incoming freshman. This will have the nifty rush cd-rom and your application packet. Oh! And make sure to send in pictures that flatter you but that look like you and that are NOT glamour shots. Good luck! |
awwwwwwww shucks Chloe173...
....ya know I think the world of you...and of course I would have loved to have been able to call you sister! Thank you for the kind words.
|
Thank you so much ladies!!! I'm getting excited already!
I should make a check-list though! Things to do! Information Packet Pictures Recs Oh dear!! |
speaking of pictures
hey lovely ladies,
as for giving pictures to the women writing our recs, can they be non-studio photos? i graduated hs over a year ago, and my senior pics are long gone. i can get someone to take a couple of good pictures of me to use...is that ok as long as they are not just random pics of me doing...something random? what about leftover pictures i have from prom? you chicas always give great advice, so i figured i'd throw this out at you. thanks! |
From what I've read elsewhere, don't use the prom pictures since you don't usually look like that in real life. Have your Mom take some recent pictures of you so they can recognize your face from them.

I'm so excited that formal recruitment is getting so close!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
|
I actually started planning what to wear for rush today. This is highly unusual for me, as I never pick out my clothes in advance. I'm trying to make a list of things I need to get (which I was doing anyway), and my English professor was taking ever so long to explain the syllabus... ;) I work with a KD and an ADPi, and I haven't told them I'm planning to rush yet. I'm fairly new at work, and I don't want them to think that I'm only nice because I plan to rush in the fall. I'm getting so excited! It's a good thing I've got summer school to keep me busy....
Crystal |
I have also begun justifying things i buy because i could wear them for rush (and i'm a sister!!!). It's just so easy to think "oh those shoes would go so well with my pref dress, or that top would be really "functional" on philanthropy night... yeah functional. But August quickly approaches!!! yay:)
|
I don't know if you guys can answer this , since I'm sure it's diffrent in every school, but I don't know what the schedule for my rush is. Like, what night is philanthropy night, what are the "themes" for the first few nights? I am only asking this so I will know hat I need to wear and/or buy before then. Do schools normally have a sort of "greek orientation" type thing where they discuss all of this stuff? I haven't gotten my greek mailer yet, they are supposed to go out this month, and maybe I'll find my answer in there, but till then, can you guys help me out at all??
|
Tina, what I did was look at the sorority websites for my campus, and 2 of them had the recruitment schedule posted. The others weren't updated, but they normally will have it up too. Check out the Panhellenic site too - it may be up already. My school has an orientation night where they explain to you each night, what (not) to wear, what to expect, etc. I think most do.
Are you having as hard of a time sitting still and waiting as I am? ;) Crystal Edited to say, Happy Birthday AZpinkkittie! |
Tina,
the last time I checked the UofA greek site hadn't been updated with this years recruitment book. But last year's was still there. Last years will give you a good idea of what to expect. I don't expect that this year's version will be much different. (edited to add the link) http://www.union.arizona.edu/csil/greek/rush/index.php |
thanks for the info
Thanks for the birthday wishes Crystal!! Yes, I can hardly wait!! I wasn't able to open the acrobat file for last years guide (damn work computer  ) but I can be patient. I did some shopping yesterday for my birthday and got some cute things for rush. Grrr...why does August have to be so far away??
|
there should definitely be a support group for all of us that cannot hang on until fall without some rush details. Wasn't there a summer rush thread around here somewhere?...someone help, I need a fix!!!!
my best friend and I sat around exchanging rush cheers for an hour the other day (she's an alpha gam at another school). I think that I am officially whacked out. |
I'm bumping this up because I'm soooooooooo excited formal recruitment is getting closer & closer!!!
|
hah, yup! in exactly two months (august 18) i'll be participating in the second day of the first round parties of recruitment. woohoo! i wish someone on GC was psychic and give me a little heads up...that would be so cool =)
|
2 months from tonight pref will be over and I will not be asleep then either...
|
Moxie, did you get a booklet in the mail yet? They mailed one to my son, but that may have been because he went to Spring Testing.
Anyway, it has the application, info on a the sororities and fraternities, right down to assessments. There are also pictures-but I could SWEAR they are the same girls from 2 years ago:confused: - depicting customary attire for the parties. Have you sent in your application? They will start putting things together soon. |
Yeah! I'm so excited for every single one of you! :D Recruitment is the fall seems so much more intense (and much better described!) than in the winter/spring. Maybe due to the Southern recruitments being at this time?
Moxie - You are getting extra-special support from me. :) Any girl with "moxie" is going to knock 'em dead at LSU! :D |
thanks for the update JAM. i just sent in my registration forms and payment last week. actually, i brought them to the greek affairs office since i work on campus. i haven't gotten a booklet, but if i don't get one eventually i'll go back to greek affairs and request that they put one in my hands :) i was thinking i would ask a couple of girls i know who went through recruitment last year about attire, since i saw the pictures from last year's greek tiger and they didn't help me at all!!! i guess i already know about clothes and stuff from GC, though.
thanks, moxiegrrl! i am very appreciative of you support =) we moxie girls have to stick together. |
Where has USCchicha06 gone? She pumped about rush then she left!
|
Quote:
She's not sure if she's returning to USC right now - which is not to say that she's unsure about rush! |
Oh no! I wish her the best of luck in her decision!

Less than 2 months to go.... Still waiting on my info from panhel. I'm getting more excited, and I love having an excuse to buy clothes!
|
woohoo!!! recruitment is a month and a half away!!!
I'm so super excited!!!! :D |
update on my school's recruitment. it is aug 27 - aug 31. so far away!!!!!!!!!!!
|
I can't wait for rush!!! It's only ummm 59 days away! (now that I say that it seems soooo far away!!) But I do still have to get those recs and those cute rush outfits (YAY for shopping) so maybe its not THAT far away!!
|
Ditto what "Absolutuscchick" said I can't wait for rush! It's only 62 days away (I will be on the other side)!:D
|
1 month 2 weeks for us MTSU girls...
Time is going a lot quicker now that we've got our recruitment applications. |
Hehheh. I thought I was the only overexcited person in the world! I've been trying to plan our recruitment like mad, but it's made difficult by several factors, one of which is I'm currently in Hongkong and international phone call inquiries probably aren't a good idea...
Eeeee!!!! This will be my first formal rush from the other side. ^_^ Good luck to everyone, and if someone does decide to start up a 'Rush Anxiety Support Group,' count me in! |
I'd love to see a formal recruitment at one of the larger schools. Or, for that matter, ANY school that has more than 1 sorority. I think next year I'm going to take my recruitment chair and CP to visit a chapter that participates in an August recruitment, since we recruit in early Sept....
Thankfully GC is here to fill the void. I'm going to live vicariously through all of you, so POST THOSE STORIES :D :D |
i'm actually starting to have second (or possibly third...) thoughts about going through recruitment. i went over to greek affairs yesterday to get a copy of 'greek tiger', the booklet they put out each year for PNMs. in it i saw a chart with financial information listed for each chapter - yikes! i knew it was going to be about this much, but seeing it is different. i mean, the prices for a new member's first semester appear to range from $1000-1400, and that's *without* meals. that's a huge commitment for me to make if i'm going to be paying for it on my own (as my parents aren't huge proponents for greekdom). if i have the money, i won't mind paying it - but i would feel so stupid if it came time to pay and i didn't have quite enough! i work and i'm trying to save, and hopefully that will work out. i think i am mostly bummed because one of my favorite chapters' dues (even though i really am keeping an open mind!) are on the highest end. *sigh*. money schmoney. it would just be unfortunate if i go through recruitment, which is going to take a lot out of me time-wise and emotionally, and then not be able to afford the place i love. i guess i better start working more?
|
Moxie, I hope that you still go through rush. It is a rewarding experience, and I would hate to see you regret not rushing down the road.
I do understand your hesitation though. My younger cousins have shown an interest in greek life, but have chosen not to rush due to $$$. It is just not worth the money to them. Cost New Member Year Average: $1,850.00 Range: $1,390.00 - $2,250.00 Cost In-House Member Year Average: $5,050.00 Range: $4,529.00 - $5,665.00 I don't want to encourage them because I don't know how their parents feel about the money issue. I want to tell them all about how great it is and the lifetime benefits to being an Alpha Gam, but I am unsure if it is the right thing to do. But I do hope that this works out for you, and that you don't change your mind. You have already established how much you want this. I hate to see anyone not follow their heart due to $$$. |
Moxie -- I know how you feel, since I'm paying for my own sorority dues too (my parents only pay for my tuition; I cover the rest of my college expenses). It is a pretty expensive commitment. Regardless, I still think you should go through rush. It's a great experience even if you don't decide to join.
Another thing: my first semester sorority dues were almost twice as much as the second/third/beyond semester sorority dues, and I think that happens at many, many campuses. (At any rate, your first semester dues will be higher -- maybe not twice as much.) You have a lot of one-time expenses, like your badge, which you'll never have to pay for again. |
If you have left over student loan money...use it. It will cover your dues, if your dues are part of your living arrangements.
Trust me, I know it's tough when you have to save all of your summer work. But think of it as an investment. |
Mizzou Rush
I'm so excited for rush! This will be my second time on "the other side" and I am even more excited than last year!!! There are so many girls that go through rush at my school, it was over 1000 last year  so I am sure AXJules and I will have some interesting stories to share once it's all over! :D Good luck to everyone who's rushing this fall!!!!!
|
I'm so happy there is so much excitement around!!! I can't wait to get back to school and start our 8 hr practice sessions!!! I want to sing the songs and make the food and don my pin and meet my future little....sigh it's almost like planning a wedding. (yes, that's right I am a big fat NERD).:p
|
trisigmaAtl: No, it's not...rush is much more stressful :p
|
Moxie-I totally hear you about the dues thing. I work full time right now, and live on my own. Thankfully I got a scholarship for school, and I will probably use my loan $$ to pay for dues, but you should see if your houses have payment plans. I've heard some of these great GC girls talk about that, and that's what I was planning on doing until I found out about my scholarship.
The average for your first year here (living in-town) is about $2600. I personally don't have that just lying around. I don't know if it's okay to talk about money during your rush (as far as dues and such) but if you can, ask the houses if they allow payment plans. |
i sent in my recruitment application today:)
