Actually try anything by those bands - the Desaparecidos and Sparta are a little heavier, Zero7 more ambient [/B]
definitely going to back up your choice of sparta and desaparecidos. at the drive-in is quite possibly my favorite band.

"american hearts" or "just a simple plan" - PIEBALD (i GUARANTEE you will like, if not LOVE this band)
"you file" - Denali (or anything by Denali) (if you like indie girl rock and something to chill to)
"self improvement: lesson one" - slowride
"canaries" or "we are both writers" - kind of like spitting
"swing, swing" - the all-american rejects - i used to work for this band's label and they're some great guys with a really catchy single out now
"sunshine" - the damn personals (they rock like its detroit and 1967)
"where we breathe" - boys night out
"jude law and a semester abroad" - brand new
"my only cure" - recover
"deadbolts" - thrice (went to high school with these guys)
"i wrote this down" or "stop internet romance" - limbeck (went to high school with this band too....were in an apple imac commercial about two years ago)

whew.
keep me talking about music. its my life and my job.
xo

KSig RC 03-13-2003 01:30 AM

for today: some midwest "nerd-rap" from the boys of Anticon:

Atmosphere - "FREE OR DEAD" or "Like Today" etc
Eyedea - "Red Wiped With Blue"
Sage Francis - "Embarrassed"

Try anything that says "anticon" on it when you search on kazaa - some intelligent hiphop out of Minneapolis.

PS - josie, word on the ATDI, so I'll also say download "Hulahoop Wounds" by At the Drive-In

It comes with a SH*TLOAD of spyware and will probably screw me over in the end, but I use Limewire. If you download "adaware" from Download.com it takes all that stuff away...and isn't too bad.

I used to use Kazaa/Kazaa lite too.

FiReKraCkEr 03-13-2003 11:16 AM

I don't think anyone has mentioned my gal ANI!!!!!

Ani DiFranco that is....she is the Shizit!!

Try her songs "Swan Dive", Untouchable Face (F*ck You), and "You had time"

Ad-aware is good, but doesn't get rid of everything - you're much better off using kazaa lite if it's available to you. Spyware is removed, as well as download restrictions and etc.

I had no idea she attended UNT. In fact, I had no idea she was from Texas either. I am a huge fan of her music.

Jay-Z--Brush Your Shoulder Off... can't stop playing that.
Nick Lachey--This I Swear... I really love the instrumental part in the beginning.

_Opi_ 08-05-2004 09:33 AM

"Let's get it started" Black eyed Peas.

It's been playing in my head for the past 5 days!

AXJules 08-05-2004 10:37 AM

I am hanging my head in shame at the fact that I started this thread. I have always been anti anti anti downloading...but I will download indie bands/techno that don't have cds out, or have been specifically loaded to the web to be distributed. Otherwise, IMHO, it's stealing. Since it's my thread I feel it's my responsibility to say "NO downloading!!! Go out and buy the frickin' cd!" Or have a friend send it to you. Not quite as bad.
Ok now at least I have a clear conscience ;)

And if you have a gun to your head and have to download Black Eyed Peas (although you really should buy the cd because the entire thing has a pretty unique sound) download "Get Retarded" which is the uncensored version.

I have never heard this version before. So, they just changed the lyrics within the same song?

The music sounds a little different and there's a woman singing for a big part of Let's Get Retarded. I turn off the radio during let's get it started personally, because I hate having one of my favorite bar songs ruined.

The fact that they are from the "Let's pander to 15 y/o teenybopper girls" series of CDs rather than the "Let's make songs that may sound alike but don't sound like everything else on the radio as well" series.

Senusret I 09-07-2004 05:10 PM

Does anyone use SOULSEEK here????

I'm not sure if you are familiar with their albums, but M&Ms is on the same disc as the songs you mentioned...I don't think anything Blink has done panders to anyone. There are so many so-called fans of Blink out there who refuse to let them grow up from who they were in 1994 and make something a little different. I've had this argument soo many times with my little sister who looks down on anyone who likes any recent Blink. They're men in their 30's with families now..of course things aren't going to sound the same as they did when they were younger! Like what you like, but I choose to love their new stuff and old stuff equally...and how can ANY Blink fan NOT love Reckless Abandon??? If you've ever been to a concert, they obviously LOVE this song.

Umm, yeah, sorry about this lol, for some reason I get really argumentative about this, probably because my sister and I end up in many discussions about them so its already played out in my head. Like whatever you like, but I always feel the need to defend my tastes!! (insecurity  )

Actually I am familiar with their CDs, as I own all of them, including Flyswatter - and you will note I did not critique M&Ms, but ROLLER COASTER? That's not one of their better songs and everybody knows it.

PureGoldF2K1 09-08-2004 01:41 PM

Everybody knows it huh? Damn I love that song!!! Makes me smile everytime I hear it :D

Lil' Hannah 09-09-2004 11:50 AM

They Might Be Giants - "Experimental Film"

A good Toronto act, K-OS with two good songs:

His new one "Crabbuckit" or his earlier "Heaven only Knows"

You can listen to "Crabbuckit" online at his website:

I've heard Crabbuckit before - one of my LJ friends recommended it. It's got a fun beat.

His older stuff is better IMO - try "Anthem (Freeze)" or "Superstar (pts. 1,2,and 3)

If you like K-Os, you'll probably like Zion I as well.

Compare to "Don't Mug Yourself" by the Streets, which might be the funniest song ever . . . and a classic, if you can decipher the British.

PS - Mike Skinner (the scrawny white dude who is 'the Streets') is ugly even by British standards, but he's amazing

Maybe though I haven't listened to anything by Zion (well that I remember)... but I was sold on K-OS live act and club personality... just a great guy to hang with/listen to at the bar/club... but I'll have to look into Zion.

the full name is 'zion i' when you search - look for "warrior's dance", "cheeba cheeba" (the closest to K-Os, obviously no classical guitar though), "leh leh leh", etc
