KellyO97 09-05-2003 08:41 AM

As far as NPC groups being on shows like "Trading Spaces" and"Cribs", its all in the presentation. I'm sure a National doesn't mind their girls on television on their best behavior, showing off their houses or working on a safe, wholesome remodeling project. With Sorority Life, they have no control over what the girls do or what gets shown. The drinking, boys, hazing, and other questionable behaviors that have shown up on Sorority and Fraternity Life can be extremely unflattering and no National wants their house to be portrayed in that light.

I would wager because they know people are going to hear "USC sorority" and think they are all the same as the one on TV. Also, apparently they begged Zeta Sigma Phi not to do it and they still did.

zchi2 09-05-2003 11:56 AM

I just PRAY that they don't do anything too crazy because I know a lot of people are going to get my sorority mixed up with them http://www.computerpannen.com/cwm/co...ai/screama.gif

I think it's inaccurate to say that USC Panhellenic hates Zeta Sigma Phi. Many members of USC Panhellenic are very upset with ZSP because they chose to be a part of Sorority Life even after they saw the negative spin MTV has put on SL.

Yes, they wanted to film there, but Alpha Psi chapter would have to clear it with EO first. I am thinking that EO nixed the idea, in the best interests of the sorority chapter. After all, this is MTV we're talking about.....and you know how MTV can be...sigh.

OH! That is just TOO funny! I almost forgot about Earl.....

Watching SL and FL is theraputic for me....It just blows my mind how some orgs are willing to get their name out there no matter the vice.

I do have to say that FL was more respectful and seemed more challenging than the org on SL3....all they did was crafts!! What up with that mess???

33girl 09-12-2003 05:27 PM

I just followed a link to the SL3 site from the Z Phi B board. They are calling the seasons "SL: Los Angeles" and "FL: Santa Cruz" but not mentioning the schools by name. I wonder if USC denied them even that....after all, there are a lot of schools in Los Angeles. It seems odd that they would identify it that way.

Texas-Gal 09-16-2003 03:27 PM

Just confirming that there will be no reunion specials, at least before the new seasons start tomorrow.

But, there will be a mini-marathon of the last 5 or 6 episodes of SL:2 in the hours right before SL:3 premieres.

I added a couple of more recaps, as well.

ALSO: news item in US Weekly noted that one of the SL:3 pledges is a "beauty queen" and one of the FL:2 rushees is openly gay.

moe.ron 09-16-2003 03:35 PM

Are they going to have it on DVD, director's cut? :D

i get to watch a full episode for the first time tonight. it has been forever since i have had cable. now i have it so i get to watch it. i am looking forward to it.

IHeartAXO 09-17-2003 04:20 PM

As a USC student, I know for a fact that USC denied them of everything. USC did not support their filming and they were not allowed to film on any USC-owned property. They weren't supposed to mention the school's name, either (though it will leak out), and I'm kinda surprised that MTV followed that rule.

It was a gigantic mess of drama last semester and I'm interested to see how it plays out. I'm not exactly sure what MTV will show since they weren't allowed anywhere on campus or any campus owned area surrounding it. Could be a lot of the girls just sitting in their houses... who knows.

I actually just looked at the bios of MTV and one of the girls was in my Spanish class! She was cool. :)

I'm an old USC alumna from the mid-1980s. It sounds like even that pledge house wasn't on 28th Street -- am I correct?

HotDamnImAPhiMu 09-17-2003 04:46 PM

this is what made me happy:

Quote:

The show does not have permission from Panhellenic or International Fraternity Council national organizations to film on their houses' private properties, said Erin Jackson, Alpha Phi's delegate to Panhellenic and a junior majoring in communication and French. Her sorority is not wearing its letters in public because the sisters do not want their letters shown on the show.

Yes, you are correct. They were not on 28th street and the national organizations sent letters informing MTV that they were not allowed to film on their properties or enter their properties.

Thanks for the clarification. I haven't been to the area in a few months. If I go to the Greek Escape, I spend too much $$$, so it's better for me to stay away.:D

Texas-Gal 09-17-2003 08:46 PM

Nice, once again, to see MTV fail to show the programs it had listed on its schedule.

Despite the fact there was supposed to be a mini-marathon tonight of SL:2 episodes, there was none. Dangit.

they seem to pledge a lot of upperclassmen. I guess that could have its good points, but then again coursework is more difficult in the upper level years than the first two.

Ok, I MISSED sorority life :( :( Thanks to stupid dish network that couldn't find anywhere to install the dish....argggh...well anyway I am planning on watching it in the chapter room at KD...When is it on...I am so psyched to see USC on tv!!!

wreckingcrew 09-17-2003 11:35 PM

Alright, SL 3 is here, i've been waiting for this since.......well a long time. I admit it, i'm a SL junkie :D

I dunno though, for some reason i'm not feeling this group of girls as much as the past. I mean, they seem alright, but i dunno. There's definately no "candace" in this group that's gonna keep me tuning in week after week, although i thought meena was pretty cute :p

Other than that, what the hell is up with sharifa? They tell her to show at 7 and she just rolls in at 7:30? Forget that. Another thing, the sister's getting pissed because Carmen asked them to keep quiet so she could sleep? that's BS. I'd have said, "Look, y'all preach about school being the first priority, how about letting me sleep so i can take care of my school work?" What was the sister doing at the house that late anyway? We didn't have a pledge house, but during hell week we all lived in the chapter room. There were specified hours in which brothers could be there and at all other times only the pledge trainer was allowed. Then the sister giving her shit during the pledge meeting the next day? If i was Carmen that's when i woulda busted out with the crap about the sisters bein loud outside her room. Oh well, least we got to see the first cry of the season :D

Another thing, i was kinda disappointed that they skipped the whole rush process. It feels like i missed the first episode and caught the one where they start the pledge process instead. Boo to that.

Oh well, i guess i'll have to watch and see how it plays out. Here's hoping something will spice this group up.

Kitso
KS 361 times i'd have thrown my pledge book at the sister being loud outside the door in MY house!

Isn't Zeta Sigma Phi a MCGLO? If so, that do their rush a little bit different then NPC. I like Carmen. She's my favorite so far.

KerriMarie 09-17-2003 11:44 PM

Here is what constantly amazes me about Sorority Life (oh, excuse me... Pledge Life!) - the attitudes towards the New Members are so radically different from anything that I am used to.

In my org, as I'm sure it is in most of yours - New Members are your LIFE! They are what is going to keep your sisterhood going after you are gone. When our new girls come to Kappa, they get hugs and smiles and love and presents. They are welcomed with open arms, and we go out of our way to make sure they're happy and like us as much as we like them. Of course, in that we're trying to teach them about the sorority, and help them understand things like respect for older sisters, but they really don't need to deal with attitude the first week they're there!

On all seasons of Sorority Life, it seems to be like "Oh, well they have to PROVE that they're good enough" and "earn" their way in - if you didn't think they were good enough for your organization, why did you give them a bid?

What really irked me was when one of the pledges said about Val (is she a robot by the way? She totally freaks me out) is that she's their Pledge Mom, she isn't supposed to be nice to them. That's a complete 180 from my sorority - your New Member Educator IS like your mom, you're supposed to be able to approach her with issues, comments, concerns - and she listens, and helps you out. She's like the one older sister you can always go to if you screwed up, and she's there to look out for you and protect you - not to get you in trouble or be mean to you!

And that crap when Carmen was trying to sleep... that was just rude. Ugh.

I totally agree. I see that as a fraternity mentality. Pretty much every fraternity i know of treats pledges the same way, that they have to earn their letters.

Now, i only have had a lot of experience with NPC groups so i'm used to sorority pledges being treated the way that you describe Kerri. I wonder what girls think that have seen all three of these seasons and think that pledging a NPC sorority is going to be like that. I guess they all get a pretty good surprise at bid day :D

Kitso
KS 361 sigs of mine i'd give Meena ;)

AlphaXi4983 09-18-2003 12:17 AM

it definately does bother me that all three sororities have treated their pledges that way. we were welcomed with so much love and hugs, etc. and our NewMOC is definately your closest ally in the sorority-- we encourage the new members to go to her no matter what, whether they have issues with the new member process, or just want someone to chat with. i will probably watch this season just becuase im a nerd and im addicted to SL.... but i hope not too many PNMs are watching... that makes me kinda nervous....

IheartAphi 09-18-2003 12:44 AM

The one thing I can say to defend the girl that was late moving in, is simply that she was MOVING into a new place. Thats a lot of stuff to pack and move in a short notice and to get over to the house. I missed the first five minutes, but was there a meeting at 7, or was it just moving in?

The pledge master is on a power/ego trip.

I was thinking the same thing about Val. She has no facial expressions when she talks! I was also disappointed that they skipped the whole rush process and went straight into the new member period. After seeing the preview for the rest of the season, it doesn't look as scandalous as the previous seasons which is both good and bad. It's good that it may not portray members of sororities in a bad light with certain sisters' holier than thou attitudes (like we saw in the SL2), but it's bad because I admit that it's always more interesting when there's drama, and this season looks like it's more toned down that the previous seasons in that sense. But I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Nonetheless, I'll be catching next week's episode to see if gets any better.

jojapeach 09-18-2003 01:01 AM

I already know that I don't like these big sisters. I gave them a decent chance until they said something foolish about Carmen not approaching them with "respect" when she asked them to not talk so loudly while she's sleeping. You dumb broads! Respect her enough to not talk so loudly next to her bedroom door so she can get some sleep. Matter of fact, get out.

Plus, no Rush...? Stick to the formula.

Maybe it's the Cali thing, maybe it's just the girls, but I'm not feeling it.

Texas-Gal 09-18-2003 01:33 AM

I always love checking in here after I write my recaps, and confirming that all the other Greek folks had the same thoughts I did. I picked out that same line: when Carmen said that she was basically afraid of her pledge mom, who isn't there to be nice to them. Yikes! There's discipline, and then there's fear - and fear just wasn't a part of my pledging experience.

In any event, the complete recap for this episode is already up...

wishuponastar 09-18-2003 02:52 AM

 I think that coming into a girl's HOUSE and thinking she is disrespectful for telling you to be quiet is just WRONG!!! This may be your sorority, but this is NOT your HOUSE!! I would never go into someone's house and not respect their wishes like that. How tacky and rude. And really now, if you like a girl enough to extend her a bid, I would hope that you respect her enough to treat her like a human being and not that has to prove something to you. She may be your sister someday.

AXWhoah 09-18-2003 03:04 AM

My mouth dropped open when I heard the thing about Carmen being "disrespectful". I was like are you kidding me, from what we've seen she has been kissing some serious ass and is like super pledge. Can't a girl get some sleep! And every season I am amazed at how shitty (pardon my french) they treat their new girls. Like Kerrimarie said, we treat our new members like goddesses. Presents, we invite them everywhere, throw parties for them. Damn, I wish I was still a NM.....Oh and my favorite is Selina or is it Sarina....anyone she seems so cute and sweet that I want to be like RUN AWAY TO A SORORITY THAT WILL LOVE YOU AND TREAT YOU ACCORDINGLY !!!!!

it's not just proving they're good enough for the sorority, but also showing actives that they want it. they get the bids all for various reasons (actives think they'd be good contributions to the house, the person can grow from the experience, the list goes on) but things happen during pledgeship and it may not seem that way anymore--people might question why they're doing what they're doing so to me, it seems fitting that they work for things to show that they actually want it.

i wasn't able to catch the end of the show with the girl telling the actives to be quiet. from the view of an ACTIVE how did she come off as? because an active is an active no matter how you look at it.

I really hope this doesn't hurt our chapters' Rush...

Maybe it was just me, but it seems like MTV skipped a lot. Not only did they skip Rush, but it didn't seem like the episode flowed properly. I was really disappointed in the show. I hope it gets better...

33girl 09-18-2003 10:25 AM

Val and Coral from Real World Back to NY were obviously separated at birth.

I'm glad they showed enough discretion to not allow their member selection sessions to be televised. Also, I'm guessing their rush events were all girl, as opposed to the coed parties of the past seasons, and where is the excitement in that?

Do the blurred shirts say Abercrombie, Aeropostale or USC? You decide ;).

All in all, I think that this season will probably live up to its preshow publicity and be pretty boring. The drama will most likely come from 6 strangers living together - hmmm, does this sound familiar?

zchi2 09-18-2003 10:28 AM

Well I think that it is a good thing that it might be "boring" because it wouldn't make sororities look too bad if GDI don't have anything to complain about.

SigmaChiGuy 09-18-2003 10:29 AM

This is going to the the worst season. Actually, MTV does nothing good for greeks what-so-ever anyway. Thankfully they are locals being represented, not nationals. They can give themselves a bad name and nobody else.

Both Soror./Frat. lifes will suck. I doubt I will even watch.

PS, Val can suck it. Life does not stop at the Zeta Sigma Phi house. They suck.
