I thought I heard him ask "Did you go through ritual?" and Mike answered yes and admitted that he lied about only having been a pledge a week.
I totally agree that Alex needs to dump Lindsey. She sounds manipulative and self-absorbed. |
I'm sorry but Alex needs to take a stand for himself and be a man! Haha. He is so whipped he doesn't even know it. I liked Matt and was disappointed that he didn't end up pledging. It was too bad, but at least you knew that he was there for the right reasons and it was apparent how much he really wanted to join the house. I mean he wanted the President to talk to his parents! BTW, there is a resemblance to Sean Williams Scott (Stiffler).
All I have to say is Earl cracks me up everytime he opens his mouth. He was funny in the first episode when describing Alex's relationship with his girlfriend. The alum, Ron, scares me a little. Okay, maybe a lot. Don't know what his deal is, but there is also another alum who hangs around as well. (I forget his name) |
Forgot to add that I liked the fact that the brothers didn't let MTV go and tape their ceremony/ritual on Bid Night... unlike DZO. Some things are sacred to a fraternity and should not be shared with those outside of the chapter.

Please. The ladies of DZO have a right to conduct their rituals however they want, private or otherwise. In fact, I thought it was kind of cool that they let MTV tape one of their rituals, since now those who aren't in fraternities or sororities can see that ritual doesn't involve goat's blood or hazing or anything. |

Hehehe.. my high school band director said that to us ALL the time!!! I had a major flashback to marching band practice when he said that :p |
I don't wanna start a riot or have links to other threads thrown at me...
maybe i just missed something on this episode. SO mike supposedly gets initiated to another GLO, transfers to a school without a chapter and DAs from the prior group to join a local... what's the big deal???? I understand, yes he lied and whatnot and that can be grounds for depledging, however, it just seemed really blown outta proportion... esp with that alumni dude. We have girls that DAed from other groups... we couldn't be happier to have them. Did i miss a key point or something? |
i feel bad for alex...it is obvious that he cares about his relationship, but he wants to live a full college life too. he needs to ditch his girlfriend...she is bringing him down.
as for matt...that just sucks. his parents didnt even let him try it out, or compromise with him. we had a pledge that had to drop because of his parents this semester too--its just sucks for everyone. grant...i knew that kid wouldnt get a bid. it was obvious. mtv made him look like an ass, and like he was putting on a show. when he said he would come back the next semester if he did not get a bid i knew he was full of shit. if a fraternity did not want me one semester, i would not waist my time... the whole ron, ron issue was crap. those guys had no interest in a fraternity. the people who rush, then drop the first week, never truely wanted to join...they usually are the people out looking to rush just for the sake of rushing. mike is a cock sucker. that was really shady of him to pull that shit, and try to join another fraternity. i can understand if he had a bad situation with his original fraternity, but you cant betray the brotherhood you pledged to and were initiated into. |
Quote:
Actually, I wasn't implying that. I just stated my opinion that I liked how they kept it private. That's all. Someone else had posted in the Sorority Life thread that it bothered her and her sisters a little that DZO showed the pinning ceremony, and I agree. Just my opinion again. |

But at any rate - the fact that this guy lied to an alum to get a bid is more than grounds to kick his ass out, IMO. Oh, and I don't know if this is bugging anyone else, but the commercials where they say "Frat Life" are like nails on a chalkboard. I guess they'll start advertising "Sore Life" soon. grrrrrrrrrrr |

so were these guys actives last semester, graduated and now are alumni or were they alumni at the time mtv was there? or are they grad students at ub now and still remain active in the chapter even though they are alumni? oh and i think the other alum you might mean is lindo? i noticed his little caption said he's an alum too... he's hot :D |
that one alum needs to realize that his college days are over. he seems just too involved for his own good
|

when ron kicked mike out didn't the people in the background have beer in their hands? maybe i was just seeing things, but i really would not want to be caught in a situation where underage people were drinking. how long do you think it will be before they get booted for hazing? it sucked that the pledges had to clean the house, but let's face it, it needed to happen! ;) the line ups and the push ups......i guess my question is how is this not hazing? |

I LOVE FRATERNITY LIFE!:D
And I love the theme song! I want you to knowwwww, I'm addicted to youuuuu! QTE |

I HATE THE THEME SONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Was anyone else pissed that they open the show with a scene that was supposedly even before interviews? I know Mtv editors have not been trained in continuity at all but to show the same scene in back to back episodes and to imply that it happened at different times is just crap.
Alex is a puss! He threw up for pete's sake. And his whole "I have to make a decision now whether to accept my bid." Sorry hon, you made that decision when you sat in the spotlight and said "I would never let my girlfriend ruin this for me." Honestly even if you DP, your girl is probably gonna dump your ass when she sees the show! I still think you're a cutie though. :o Grant~ I'm so confused. I thought he gets a bid. Do you think they'll bid him later to make up for the FOUR guys they've already lost? Or does he just hang around under the guise of being a friend to Alex? Does anyone else wonder which rushees met the 90% approval and which got in only after it was dropped to 80%???? This is my brother Ron, my other brother Ron and lastly, my other brother Ron. TG that "The Rons" DP'd. I would have gone nuts w/ 2 pledges and an alum with the same name. As soon as they showed "The Rons" getting their bid I was praying they wouldn't take it. "I was on the crapper." "I got him out in time." Thank you Beavis & Butthead for the lovely imagery. Why didn't we ever get an explanation for "The Rons" showing up so late the first day? Did they think the brothers meant 7PM? Alum Ron kinda scares me too. He comes off really intense. I think it's cool though that they have two alums around. Hopefully they are acting as advisors to the chapter. And hopefully Mtv will portray it that way and not as two losers trying to extend their glory days. I don't blame Alum Ron for being pissed at Mike. Mike straight up lied to him! If Mike had said; "I was in a fraternity, I was initiated and a)I deactivated for whatever reason or b)my fraternity does not have a chapter here for me to affiliate with and I want to continue with a bond of brotherhood here"; I'd have been cool with it. He deceived the brothers and did not let them make a informed decision about him. That's where the problem lies. I miss Matt. :( He seemed to be a good guy that actually wanted to be there. Weren't some of the FL rushees transfer students as well? Wouldn't they have the same problem that Erin had on SL? |
We have advisors but they don't have anything to do with the selection process except that it is don't correctly. I don't think MTV would give them alum stat unless they were alum at the time.

We used to think it was funny to change the Robert Palmer song to "Might as well face it, you're adic.......ted to love", but that was a long time ago. I hate when people use my jokes.
I'm guessing they have a larger %age of alums around than a lot of schools because Buffalo is a big city...the ones on the show are most likely in grad school and "active" alums. |
OK, first off, I like this show so much more than SL. Matt, wish he could've stayed...he was VERY cute. Graham, good riddance ya freak show! Alex, get a backbone kid...you're lucky if you're 21, and you're already whipped like a baby!! The unfortunate part of this show is that it will only perpetuate fraternity stereotypes, but alas, it's fine entertainment....
As for the alum Ron (scary mofo!), he is far too involved in selection. I mean, we may attend recruitment events, but we don't have a say or a vote on who collegiates choose!! Get a life RON....Maybe a job :) |
Quote:
that guy isn't there advisor as far as i can tell. and if he IS, he is doing a pretty piss-poor job. an advisor should act more professionally---not that nonsense where he was like "if you ever see me again just walk away cause i never want to see you again in my life." or whatever the words were. that's not an advisor's role. |
The scary Alum dude would have me running the other way if i ever saw him; he'd never have to tell me twice not to talk to him if i see him! (has anyone else checked his eyes when he talks into the camara  )
but I understand that he is upset mike lied. (but man the pledges are dropping like flies! I think they all wouldn't of made it anyway Ron and Ron were Lame-o's but I liked Matt) I know at my school we have a local sorority that at one time wanted to go DG but there prob was their founders had just broken off from a new NPC sorority so they had to wait till they all graduated to show interest according to what I heard. But now I don't think they want to anymore. That might of had something to do with the dude being so mad. oh well... *Heather |

I hear that, it's like fingernails against the chalkboard.

Yo, that line up stuff...Illegal in Texas. Considered hazing. Also the pushups. Any physical "calesthenics". Also my university bans cleaning of others places of residence. Thats considered hazign too.

saw the repeats of both shows. they showed season teasers. and alex's gf, lindsey is oooogllllliiiiii. sooooooo not worth all the trouble she is putting him thru... but i guess it's a two way street because he just keeps taking it. GROW UP! |

As far as the underage drinking, look at Sorority Life 1... Candace was trashed all the time, and they celebrated her 21st bday on the show so you know she wasn't 21 at the time. For the hazing, I was wondering the same exact thing! Except they don't have a National that is gona come in and give them the boot. I'm sure after the University sees FL, then they'll take action. Does anyone wonder if MTV pays some students to go through Rush and pledging? I always thought that Jordan was a decoy, and when her and Mara left after they pledged teh whole period, I thought Mara was in on it too. I kinda think that Grant was maybe the decoy this time around. And that Matt guy.... he looks like an exact twin of the one kid on Dawson's Creek (sorry don't watch it anymore). He was that one chick's gay brother. Seriously... exactlty like him! |

It's funny, and entertaining. I don't think it spreads a bad image of greeks, because number one it's MTV and most intelligent people realize it will be twisted due to that. It is also a local and I'm not sure how long it has been around. Like if the fraternity is 4 years old or if that local chapter is. It won't discourage rushing, but perhaps we may have to weed out people who are at the fraternity for the wrong reasons. If anything I think it will create interest and make us hold ourselves to a higher level. I due wonder what will consitute hazing on this show...since they don't have a national to report to? Oh well I will laugh and enjoy the show for it's entertainment value.:p
|
I watched this show for the first time yesterday...
 I sincerely hope the men going through with recruitment next semester do not expect a house that makes them do pushups, etc.. They will be sorely dissappointed (in most cases). I'm sure enough will have the good sense to realize that MTV's reality TV shows aren't always so real. |
Quote:
MTV employees enlisted the prospective members before recruitment and told them that they would receive a "rush wardrobe" and be on national TV if they would go through recruitment and pledge Sigma Alpha Epsilon Pi. |
I'm not sure that memo wasn't a bit blown out of proportion, since I wouldn't call the clothes from Greek 101 (which is what I would guess they were offering) a "rush wardrobe." Also, umm, they HAD to tell them they would be on national TV - it's called signing a release form.
I'm not defending MTV and I believe Jordan was definitely a plant, but I wouldn't go so far as to say all of the girls rushing SAEPi were. IMO that Panhellenic memo was bitchier than it needed to be. |
I can't believe some of the stuff it looks like this chapter is going to have their pledges doing on camera. Line-ups, push-ups, etc. are considered to be hazing by New York law too. They might not get caught until after it airs, but I wouldn't be a bit surprised if Sigma Chi Omega joins the lengthy list of "unrecognized" chapters at U Buffalo.
|
Most probably everyone involved has signed all sorts of waivers -- they won't sue for hazing, or even bring it up again, I'd imagine.
Additionally -- they're a local. So it's not like their nationals will bother them. The only trouble they could get in, then, is with the state or federal gov't -- and if I'm right and everyone signed waivers, they wouldn't have a case because they wouldn't have anyone to testify. |
Actually, U Buffalo has said that the chapters will be held accountable for their actions by the University. Waivers are irrelevant in hazing cases, and don't hold up in most liability cases if there is a violation of the law (such as underage drinking, etc.). I am certain that the waivers signed are also designed to only cover the production company and MTV from a lawsuit, not the chapter. Furthermore, the U Buffalo has stated they have no contract with MTV.
There is a letter from their Vice-President for Student Affairs at http://www.student-affairs.buffalo.e.../greektv.shtml There is also an email address to share concerns about Fraternity/Sorority Life directly with Buffalo Greeks at Stu-greeks@buffalo.edu There are quite a few chapters at U Buffalo that have had recognition withdrawn by the University for a variety of reasons. As a university Greek advisor, I will be very surprised if Sigma Chi Omega doesn't wind up one of them after this show is over. |

I personally was surprised that I was actually intrigued by this show. I think it's because I actually liked watching the more relaxed nature of the men's recruitment process.
I agree with those who have stated that alumni should NOT be this involved in the selection process. When I assisted my chapter I helped them with the voting processes and the rules, but I had NO say. Your chapter is, in a way, not your chapter after you graduate. It's hard to explain, but you are now in a hands off position as an alumni/ae. Chapter advising is completely different from acting as if you are still a brother. As for the individual new members, I don't have any particular feelings yet except for one: YAHOO FOR THE ACCEPTANCE OF A MINORITY!!!!!!!!! I wonder what role he'll play and how the chapter will interact with him.... |
Actually you are abrother for life. I know what you are trying to say, but when Ileave ThetA Chi here at KU I willstay actively involoved. It is stillmy chapter and I wont let it go down the crapper because of bad decisions. It will benew brothers job to run everything and make choicesbut when they start messing up it's alumni who need to fix things and get stuff back on track!!!
