I have to say, I cannot stand Rogers & Hammerstein, they're just so perky they make me nauseous.
I love love love Sunday in the Park with George, they made a video of the production with Mandy Patinkin (sp?) and Bernadette Peters that's just fabulous. Any Sondheim makes me pretty happy though. (Yay Into the Woods!) I'm lucky enough to live in St. Louis , home of the nation's largest outdoor theatre, so summertime is massive-amounts-of-musicals time so let's see if I can narrow this down a bit. Cabaret & Chicago (tie, love Kander & Ebb, was very pleased with the new movie version of Chicago) 7 Brides for 7 Brothers Brigadoon Fiddler on the Roof and Kiss Me Kate, which is so cheesy but a bunch of my friends were in a high school production here that was just loads of fun, so I love it. |
I, too, could talk about this subject all day.
My favorite musical is The Music Man. Last year I helped put it on at my high school, which was a complete blast. I have found one thing out, though. It was much more fun to be in the show than to be the one putting it on. |
My favorites:
Ragtime Once on this Island (I can't say enough about this show) Fiddler on the Roof (a classic) The Fantasticks (it's a little theatrical but I love it) She Loves Me (charming, with beautiful music) South Pacific (men's ensemble in this show is great) Guys and Dolls (those men again) My Fair Lady The shows I'm not going to rush out to see again: Any Webber (doesn't do it for me, but I loved it when I was 10) Chicago (Fosse dancers are amazing but it's an utterly heartless show) West Side Story (I just can't stand this one, it has some great music, but it's too dated for me) Grease (cute show, but I've seen the movie way too many times, and I don't really like the woman should change to please men message) Annie (the song the orphans sing annoys me too much) |
Wow, I can't believe more people have not said anything about Mamma Mia I saw it when it came to Norfolk with my lil sis, after seeing bits on television and LOVED IT!!!! :D I would love to see it again. My dad loves ABBA, and I made sure he and my mom saw it in Atlanta. They loved it too.
I can't say that I have seen a musical that I have not liked. Unfourtunately, none on Broadway. (yet!) ;) My list includes: Les Miz (twice) Phantom of the Opera Miss Saigon Lord of the Dance I am hoping to see The Full Monty when it comes here later this season. But when I win the lottery, I am taking my mom to see all the Broadway musicals. She grew up in North Jersey, so she gave me my love of Broadway! First stop, The Producers!!! |

I'm an official Rent-head. I think I've seen Rent 5 times? I still LOVE it! My mom and I used to be obsessed and listen to the album nonstop. I haven't listened to it in years, but I STILL know every single song! La Vie Boheme is my absolute favorite... with I'll Cover You and One Song Glory close behind. Heck, I love them all! And it didn't hurt that Manley Pope was Roger the first 2 times I saw it- YUM! :)
I saw The Lion King in LA my freshman year and I loved it! The little kid who played Simba had this annoying half-Southern half-Brooklyn accent that sounded totally fake and got to be really irritating whenever he sang. But the rest... WOW! I saw Mamma Mia last winter. It was AMAZING! I wasn't expecting too much from it, but I absolutely adored it! It was totally original and the cast was amazing and it was just brilliant. It was sweet and sad and hilarious and just all around phenomenal. I LOVED it! I would love to see it again, too. And I'm a sucker for cheesy ABBA music, so that was also a bonus! I saw two pretty awful musicals while I was in London a few years ago. It was pretty much torture for me and my little brother. Saturday Night Fever was nothing spectacular and Starlight Express completely bored me. I hated the whole rollerskating aspect, too. Just not my cup of tea. Oh! and Cats! I saw Cats like 5 times when I was younger and I absolutely ADORED it! I haven't seen it since I was a child and everyone I know who saw it when they were adults hated it. I think its just one of those special childhood things to me. :) |
The sun will come out tomorrow..
Annie! I love that musical. When I was little I was in Talent Shows singing "The Sun Will Come out tomorrow" and I still sing the song today!
|
Miss Saigon by a landslide... I haven't cried that hard at the theater in years.
|
I love Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music and Cinderella with Lesley Ann Warren. I have sheet music, albums, and videos of both. I have The Sound of Music album since I was 8 years old.

In No Particular Order
West Side Story
Little Shop Of Horrors Wizard of Oz Meet Me In St Louis |
Hedwig and the Angry Inch
Rent Rocky Horror Picture Show The Producers |
My Personal Favorites...
The Life
Chicago |
I need to add "AIDA" to my list. I was so deeply moved by the way the show ended, and the music is just breathtaking. I cried at the end.
Also, "La Boheme" (yes, Puccini's opera) that Baz Luhrman has revived on broadway right now. I was in tears for almost the entire 4th act. Even today, listening to the finale, "Ay Dio Mimi!" (particularly the last 90 seconds) gives me chills and goosebumps like crazy. The fact that this music is so old and still so beautiful is incredible. I'd like to note that I saw both of these shows in the same day...(Boheme @ matinee and Aida @ night) ... it was a particularly emotional day for me on broadway lol! The next day I saw the happiest musical ever..."Thoroughly Modern Millie!" (a very good musical as well. Sutton Foster ROCKS) |
Quote:
I agree; "Thoroughly Modern Millie" was awesome! I went with a bunch of friends, most of whom love musicals and one who doesn't really like them, but he even liked it (even though he keeps calling it "Milli Vanilli," LOL). |
Ahhhhh I forgot Rocky Horror Picture Show!!!!!!!!! Bad Meghan, Bad! That was a staple on Friday nights at midnight at the local artsy theater back in high school. Now I only really watch it on Halloween or if it's ever on VH1 Movies that Rock.

I could go on and on and on
I would have to say that I absolutely LOVED Thoroughly Modern Millie and Hairspray when I went up to NYC in March...and I definitely agree that Sutton Foster is absolutely amazing and Gavin Creel is sooooo hot :D. My top musicals, in no particular order would have to be...

Rent (blasting the soundtrack/singing along is the way my roomie and I relieve bad moods)
West Side Story Les Misérables (though I must say, I like it better in French...) and the most amazing to see in person, by far, was Jekyll & Hyde. |

West Side Story (and not just becuase the original maria was an AZD) Les Miserable The Secret Garden |
How could I forget The Secret Garden.
Daughter number one has played Martha three times -- once in HS and the International Thespain Festival Main Stage, and twice in professional community theatre productions. Son played Colin in one of the profesional shows that daughter was in. What beautiful music. |

ForeverDiamond- New Bedford Festival Theater @ the Zeiterion Theater in New Bedford, MA is putting on Jekyll and Hyde running 8/8-8/10 and 8/15-8/17. http://www.nbfestivaltheatre.com/ The cast is AMAZING! I'm getting SO excited lol. |
ALADDIN!!!:D :D

Phantom of the Opera
Tommy was ok, a bit dissapointed because they made it into a happy ending. |
LuaBlanca,
Have seen J&H a couple of times -- once with Linda Eder. Speaking of talent, and beautiful music. edited to add: "Hold On" got such an ovation at the International Thespian Festival" that it literally "stopped the show." I asked our daughter once if she remembered how she felt and she said she still dreams about it." Great piece of music. |

how low are we???
this is the third time in three years to get the cats road trip... i like cats. i saw it on broadway and here. but enough is plenty. and yes, i have a cat!!! lol |
Fiddler on the Roof
Grease Wizard of Oz I've never seen Rent, but I want to! |
Les Miserables will always be my favorite - not only was it just damn good, it was the first date I had with my wife, and I was really worried she wouldn't get it since she's deaf, but she absolutely loved it (she was able to use a remote hearing aid amplifier so the sound was there enough for her).
Phantom of the Opera is good. Chicago (Broadway) - was great - I met the cast coming out the back door, and even got a hug from Marilu Henner (YOW!!!!) Never did like Cats - it was "ok" - just didn't really do anything for me. Miss Saigon was great. "Old-time" Musical favorite would be Fiddler, followed very closely by Sound of Music. |
J&H
I saw this HBO special of J&H with David Hasselhoff...I have no idea where it was from but i watched it and was completely blown away by how fantastic he was. His voice is superb, I was really impressed. It's a great show, and if it's done right, such a thrill to watch! :) Here's a question for you all...which character would you be? Jekyll or Hyde? ;)
|
and here you thought he was only muscles in a speedo...
