Tiaras?

Sailorpiphi, no problem!

Just wondering... has anyone worn a tiara to your formal? I think that makes it a little bit more fun and .. well, formal, but some people might see it as going overboard. I found this really cute one and I like it soooooo much!!!

Here's the link:

I'm going to wear a tiara too.

I'm going to wear a tiara for formals. I thought it would look so pretty with my dress and with my hair pinned up. I just have find the right one. I'm also looking for jewlery too. I want it to look just right. Hey, does anyone wear matching earrings and necklace/chockers? Does it look to matchy?

I wore a tiara to my formal this fall, and everybody thought it was really cute, so I'd tell you to go for it. I don't think anybody's going to care too much if it's "going overboard" -- formal's supposed to be fun, you should wear what you want to wear.

Should I wear stockings w/ clear shoes?

Hi

I was wondering, I am going to be wearing clear shoes with my dress, do I still need to wear stockings or hosiery(sp) or should I just go with out them? I'm also worried that I will slip out of my shoes if I wear them. Also, my shoes are really high.

What do you think?

Alums are only allowed to go to events if the collegiates invite us. The only time they invite us to anything is for founders day celebrations and for initiation. I guess it never crosses their mind to think of us old-school people.

is the dress long or short? i have always been reminded by my mother that if you were a short dress you should wear stockings. if the dress is long, i wouldn't worry about it. but i also hate stockings with a passion... their only good is keeping your legs warm if you go outside. if you don't want the stockings and the dress is short, i don't think the fashion police will be out to get you if you don't wear them. we also don't need you breaking your ankle... :D

I almost completely forgot that I need to get a dress! Ahh!
Our formal isn't until April, though, and I know nobody will invite me to a fraternity formal. :( I'll probably wait for at least another month or so to shop so I can lose weight, dammit!

I wonder where I should look???

annice22 01-18-2003 06:03 PM

Hi Chideltjen,

My dress is long, so my legs will not be shown. I was just wondering because like you said I did not want the fashion police coming to get me. So, it's probably a good possiblity that I can get away without wearing any stocking. Which would be so great.

Dress shopping advice for ZetaLuvBunny: I would say look at group-usa, Marshall Fields, and almost anywhere because not only is this formal season but also prom time for the high schoolers. So, you can find a great dress for less.

Thanks Annice. :) We don't have those stores here though. :( In fact, the mall here reallly sux so we have to go to Nashville to find any decent stores lol. I'll probably go to department stores or bridal/formal shops I guess. :) Anyone know what the "in" colors, styles, etc., are this year? I'm clueless. :p

ZTAMich 01-18-2003 07:26 PM

Our formal which is more semi-formal compared to some GLO's functions usualy have a wide range of dresses at them. I've worn the old prom dress, a dress with a fishtail in the back, but have started just wearing simple, yet elegant black dresses. I'm a senior and don't think I'll be going to that many formal events after I graduate so the cocktail dresses seem more practical for me. Plus...I make sure I have great accessories, hair and make up!

Our spring formal is in late March to Early April this year and I'm either wearing a cute pink soft of floral dress...or another black one...we'll see.

I have to say that knowing there'd be occassions to get dressy was always a big plus about greek life to me back in the day.

texas*princess 01-18-2003 07:32 PM

ZTAMich,

You can never have enough cute black dresses! They are a fashion staple no matter what! :)

again... maybe it was just my luck... but i found an awesome dress at Ross for $17 one spring. Fit me perfectly. funny story behind it tho... my roommate had bought it before me but tried it on at home and discovered it was too short for her (long dress and she is really tall). I asked if I could use it for formal that semester but she had already returned it. So i went to ross and picked it up...

to get to the point: ask one of your sisters if they have a dress you can borrow. or try ross, marshalls, tjmaxx etc. we're college students... and if you aren't going alumn this semester, you will have plenty of other formals to go to... don't spend all of your money now if it isn't gonna be your last.

as for colors and styles... i am guessing lavendar or any shade of purple... that color fabric has been flying out of my store. i was watching the golden globes preview and they were mentioning stars wearing COLOR!... not just black.
stylewise: looking thru pattern books... i saw a lot of strapless and one shoulder deals. both short and long. halter dresses were also in there a lot.

LOL@ the the stars not wearing "just black". I always thought that rather odd that they tend to wear such neutral colors too. I'm an Aquarius, so I'm alllll about the dramatic colors & such (not too crazy though). Purple is one of my fave colors hehe! I'm only a sophomore so I'm def. not graduating any time soon LOL. Last yr I wore a long shimmery sky-blue dress by Rampage- it was really pretty, but showed a LOT of cleavage, so I felt kinda trampy later LOL. Yeah I sooo need to make a dress-shopping outing with a bunch of my sisters! :D

That's funny you mention purple... there is this GORGEOUS dress in a formal wear store that I saw... and it was a beautiful deep purple. I'm torn between that dress and one that is a deep red.

YIPPEE!!

Thanks Cream and everyone for all the nice comments about the dress.. I am SOOOOOO EXCITED!!! I recieved that jewelry set I was telling you all about earlier in the thread and the tiara, and just to be a nerd, I tried all the jewelry on.

I FEEL LIKE SUCH A PRINCESS!!!! http://jeeptalk.org/crack/smilies/co...k/princess.gif :D

The choker set and tiara are more GORGEOUS in real life then they were in the eBay pictures and neither of them cost me an arm & leg. (tiara was $9.99 and the choker set was $15.50).

I'm REALLY REALLY REALLY looking forward to my boyfriends White Rose Formal even more so than before!

Chideltjen, that sounds like you are going to have an awesome formal by the beach!!!

texas*princess 03-02-2003 11:27 PM

If so, how did it go?

I LOVE hearing about formals!!

help

we haven't had our formal yet ( Thank God) My whole formal commitee decided that they have better things to do with their time than actually help plan formal, so I've been busy. I finallly got a DJ, but I still have one problem.... no favors. Does anyone know of any online places that have decent stuff that will do express orders?

please don't say greek101 they have yet to get one of my orders completely right

oceanphi01 03-26-2003 12:14 AM

I was just curious how you all do formals. Do you each have to pay for yourself and your date? How much do you usually pay? I'm trying to get a comparison to give to my chapter.

We pay for ourselves and our dates. The price varies from year to year and is usually agreed upon by the chapter. This year we got off CHEAP. It was like $160. Last year I think it was like $225.

Part of our dues goes to our formal ticket, anything after that we have to pay for out of our own pocket ( between 5 and 10 dollars) and we have to pay for our date. Last year I paid like $75 for my date and me. .. which from what I see, is really cheap.

texas*princess thanks for the site

nyrdrms 03-26-2003 12:30 PM

Our formal is paid for out of our dues, all we pay for is a date ($20) and a hotel room if we want one.
