Ross's Video Released
Jan 14, 1:19 PM EST

TUCSON (AP) -- A judge on Tuesday ordered the release of a police videotape shot during Diana Ross' arrest on suspicion of drunken driving, but without audio of her comments.

The singer's attorneys and a city lawyer representing the Tucson Police Department agreed to conditions of the release. Her lawyers had objected previously to making the tape public.

The video was shot while police questioned Ross and administered a field sobriety test.

Ross was arrested Dec. 30 for investigation of driving under the influence, DUI with a blood-alcohol level above Arizona's legal limit of 0.08 and extreme DUI, a charge that can carry greater penalties than a regular DUI.

A breath test showed Ross had a blood-alcohol reading of 0.20. The 58-year-old pop diva, who has pleaded innocent, wasn't at the hearing.

Principal Assistant City Attorney Beverly Ginn said the tape should be available after editing by Friday at the earliest.

At a hearing on Ross' request for a temporary restraining order barring release of the tape, Phoenix attorney Leon Silver told Superior Court Judge Kelly that the state would be best served "by suppression of the evidence given the danger to one of its citizens that could be brought about by release of this information."

A previously released police report on Ross' arrest provides enough information to meet the purposes of Arizona's public records law, he said.

Ginn said the issue was whether release was appropriate under the state's open records act, which requires that public records be released, excluding private, confidential information.

She said the police department didn't want Ross' statements released either, given the potential for pretrial news coverage and concern over pretrial release of suspects' statements.

The judge said Ross' comments about her family status, other personal and residential information and directions to her home would be edited out before the tape's release.

Dupri Signs Exclusive Deal With Arista
Jan 14, 3:56 PM EST

Jermaine Dupri, who has produced hits for Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson, TLC and others, has been named a senior vice president of Arista Records.

The deal, which was announced Tuesday, also moves Durpi's Atlanta-based So So Def record label from Columbia Records and Sony Music to Arista and makes the 30-year-old an exclusive producer for BMG artists. BMG is Arista's parent company.

"Jermaine has produced some of the greatest names in contemporary music, and I welcome the opportunity to bring him into the Arista family," said Arista President Antonio "L.A." Reid, who has known Dupri for more than a decade.

Among the artists on Dupri's So So Def label are platinum R&B group Jagged Edge and teen rapper Bow Wow.

Dupri is also a Grammy-nominated rapper; he made two albums for Columbia Records. He will continue recording at Arista.

"I am very happy to join the Arista family and to continue the legacy that So So Def has created over the past 10 years," Dupri said. "I feel I bring a lot to the table, and am definitely happy to do what I have to do in Arista's very comfortable space."

Dupri recently made news when tax documents revealed he owed more than $2.5 million to the federal government. Dupri has disputed the amount the IRS says he owes

Jermaine Jackson Plans Caribbean Resort
Jermaine Jackson of the Jackson 5 plans to open a $560 million casino resort in this U.S. Caribbean territory, officials said.

In partnership with Connecticut developer Curtis Robinson, Jackson plans to build the 1,400-room resort in Robin Bay, on the eastern end of St. Croix, Lt. Gov. Vargrave Richards said Friday.

Jackson and his partners are waiting to arrange for more funding before beginning construction, Richards said, without giving details.

The resort is to include a casino, a golf course, time shares and a conference center. U.S. Virgin Islands authorities have already approved a casino license, Richards said.

Jackson was in St. Croix last week, attending festivities surrounding the inauguration of Gov. Charles Turnbull to a second four-year term as head of the territory's government.

"I think its the first opportunity for Mr. Jackson to see the property and to meet the governor," Richards said.

Boxer Mike Tyson, Second Wife Divorce
Mike Tyson and his second wife were granted a divorce Monday, and the former heavyweight champion agreed to pay her $6.5 million from future earnings.

The deal ends a yearlong dispute between Tyson and Monica Turner, who accused the boxer of adultery when she filed for divorce in January 2002.

Tyson was not at the court hearing that completed the divorce, although Turner did attend. She is a pediatric resident at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington.

Tyson must pay Turner a percentage of his future purses on top of an undisclosed sum he already has given her, according to Turner's attorney, Sanford Ain. That figure rises to $9 million if Tyson fails to pay on time.

Turner was awarded the couple's $4.75 million mansion in Farmington, Conn. and the $4 million Potomac house where she lives. Turner also gets custody of their children, Rayna, 6 and Amir, 5. Tyson keeps his home in Las Vegas.

"She is pleased with the settlement, and she's ready to get on with her life," Ain said.

Tyson's attorney, Patrick Dragga, did not immediately return a phone call.

The couple drafted an earlier settlement that called for Tyson to pay Turner $10 million from his June fight with Lennox Lewis and two later matches.

Tyson, however, did not pay $4 million of the first $5 million that was owed by July 31. After Turner tried to enforce the payment schedule in September, Tyson's challenged the agreement, according to the court filings.

Tyson contended the deal was invalid because it was crafted in part by Turner's brother, Maryland Lt. Gov.-elect Michael Steele. Steele is a lawyer but does not have a license to practice law in Maryland.

Steele said his only role was to review the document and make grammatical changes.

Tyson met his second wife while he was serving a rape sentence in an Indiana prison. They were married in April 1997 in Bethesda.

The boxer previously was married for a year to actress Robin Givens. That marriage ended in divorce in 1989.

A judge in Tucson, Arizona has ordered the release of a police videotape shot during Diana Ross’ DUI arrest last December 30th. Diana’s attorneys won a temporary restraining order blocking release of the video, but they failed to convince the court that the tape should be kept under wraps. Several media organizations have asked to see the video which shows Diana failing a sobriety test. The tape will be released on Friday. But, for some reason, it will not sound.

Adidas reps gave markers and paper to Jay’s boys (7-year-old Jesse, 11 year-old T.J. and 16-year-old Jason, Jr.) and told them to draw whatever came to mind. The finished design features a portrait of Jam Master Jay on the shoe’s tongue with his name above and the dates "1/21/65 - 10/30/02" below. Only 5,000 pairs will be sold and they’ll be available exclusively at two New York stores: the Adidas store in SoHo and Moe’s Sneaker Spot in Jamaica, Queens. Price for the Jam Master Jay Adidas: $100.

Mike Tyson’s ex-wife, Monica Turner, has won $6.5 million from the boxer's future earnings. The deal ends a year-long dispute in which Turner accused Tyson of cheating on her.

Vocalist Heather Headley has announced that she is engaged to former New York Jets player Brian Musso. The couple’s been together for two years and they made their engagement official on January 8th. The wedding plans haven’t been made public yet. Heather says one of the best things about her man is that he’s not involved in the entertainment business. She told the Associated Press that she tested Musso early on by asking him to sing. The fact that he couldn’t carry a tune was a huge plus!

Bobby Brown will be singing JAILHOUSE ROCK

Singer Bobby Brown ordered back to jail

By DAVID SIMPSON
Atlanta Journal-Constitution Staff Writer

Singer Bobby Brown has been ordered back to jail by a DeKalb County judge.

Brown, the husband of pop diva Whitney Houston, has been free on bond awaiting a trial next Tuesday on a 1996 drunken driving charge. But State Court Judge Wayne M. Purdom issued an order Wednesday postponing the trial date pending Brown's arrest.

On Monday, Brown missed a weekly appointment to report to the court bailiff, which prompted Purdom to issue a bench warrant for his arrest on Tuesday. The judge's order Wednesday said Brown now is considered a fugitive.

Purdom said he postponed next week's trial because out-of-state witnesses deserved to be assured that Brown would appear before being asked to travel to the courthouse in Decatur.

In his orders, Purdom cited a list of missed appearances by Brown and said the singer also had violated his bond by leaving the state "as witnessed by his appearance on a television program broadcast from California."

Brown performed Monday night at the American Music Awards in Los Angeles.

Brown was arrested in April 1996 on Buford Highway by police who said his red Mercedes was weaving in traffic. He was charged with drunken driving, speeding, no proof of insurance and failure to maintain a lane.

He missed a 1997 court date, but DeKalb revived the case after Brown was arrested in Atlanta last Nov. 7 and charged with speeding, no proof of insurance, driving without a license and possession of an ounce or less of marijuana.

After Brown posted bond in Atlanta, he was moved to the DeKalb jail, where he was freed on $10,000 bond. Purdom had cited him for contempt of court for failing to show up for his 1997 trial, and this week he added the latest missed appearance and out-of-state travel to the contempt citation.

Tyson vs. Joe Boxer?
Wed Jan 15, 7:25 PM ET Add Entertainment - E! Online to My Yahoo!

By Joal Ryan

Looks like Mike Tyson's ready to sink his teeth into reality TV.
The production company behind those scantily clad Victoria's Secret prime-time specials is plotting a new series that would put an everyday palooka in the ring against the ear-chomping ex-champ.
The proposed reality series--no title yet--is "very much in the preliminary stages," a staffer at Triage Entertainment said Wednesday.
Per the Hollywood Reporter, talks are ongoing between Triage, which most recently produced The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show for CBS, and Tyson's managers to seal a deal for the heavyweight's involvement.
As for the everyday palooka, that role has yet to be cast. Producers say they're not necessarily looking for a person with prior boxing experience. Just, presumably, a death wish.
"This is a suicide mission," says professor Robert J. Thompson, director of the Center for the Study of Popular Television at Syracuse University. "It's one thing to pit yourself against 19 other guys [to court] a beautiful bachelorette [à la, The Bachelorette]. It's another thing to have Mike Tyson pummel you."
At 36, and having been battered himself in a bout last June against Lennox Lewis, Tyson isn't the unbeatable Tyson who regularly leveled opponents early in his career.
He is still, though, the unpredictable Tyson who bit off a piece of Evander Holyfield's ear and threatened to rip out Lewis' heart and "eat [his] children."
Diagnosed with bipolar disorder, Tyson has been known to try to even his temperament by taking the antidepressant Zoloft. He has also been known to go off his medication before fights. So best of luck to you.
Joe Boxer, the everyday palooka, not the underpants guru, would be prepped for the Tyson bout via an "intense training regiment," the Reporter says. The training sessions would be weaved into the show's storyline.
According to the trade paper, unnamed major broadcast networks are hot for the Tyson series. Thompson, for one, understands the idea's appeal.
"We've been telling this story in fiction for a long time," Thompson says. "It's called Rocky."
While a wannabe boxer may be looking for fame and respect by squaring off against Tyson for the purposes of a TV series, Tyson himself may be looking at the bottom line.
On Monday, he agreed to pay second wife (now, second ex-wife) Monica Turner $6.5 million from his future earnings. He also saw Turner appropriate the couple's multimillion-dollar homes in Connecticut and Maryland.
Tyson previously was married to actress Robin Givens (news) from 1988-1989.
The ex-champ, meanwhile, isn't waiting for a TV show to get him back into the ring. He's scheduled to discuss issues with Clifford "the Black Rhino" Etienne February 22 in Memphis.

Poor Re Re

A fire that destroyed singer Aretha Franklin's 12-bedroom home in Michigan last year was intentionally triggered, say investigators.

The Oak County Prosecuter's Office is reviewing a report on the blaze early on October 25 that burned through the 60-year-old star's unoccupied home in the Detroit suburb of Bloomfield Township.

Bloomfield Township Police Chief Jeffrey Werner says, "No one's in custody, but we believe we know who set it."

Prosecutor David Gorcyca adds, "There are three separate points of origin in one room in the house. The chemicals are similar to, and maybe, lighter fluid. A known accelerant was used."

The "Respect" singer, who was on tour at the time of the blaze, primarily uses the house for storage and lives in another in the same township.

P SHYTTY is getting MURRIED

P. Diddy's bid to beat J.Lo to the altar

Rap superstar Sean 'P Diddy' Combs has come up with the perfect plan to upstage ex-lover Jennifer Lopez -- he's going to beat her to the alter.

J.LO has married and divorced and is now engaged to actor Ben Affleck -- all since splitting from Diddy in 2000.

But Combs is hoping to get the last laugh, by tying the knot to lover Kim Porter in a spectacular $10 million ceremony:eek: before Lopez and Affleck have the chance to get hitched.

Although signs point towards a spring ceremony, Jen and Ben have yet to set a date. But that hasn't deterred Combs.

According to British tabloid the Daily Star he has already splashed out on a $1.9 million engagement ring:eek:  - and is hell-bent on making his wedding to Porter the celebrity event of the year.

A source tells the Star, "His wedding will be in true Puffy style. First class all the way and totally over the top.

"Next to this Jennifer and Ben's wedding will look like a prom."

He is acting like an azz.
As a wedding present, maybe Kim will get Puff an ORTHODONTIST.

WTF!! The only reason he is marrying her is to decrease his child support payments for Christian and before Baby Mom #1 steps up to the HIGHER CHILD PAYMENTS as well.

Ladies would you have taken P SHYTTY back?? Not I.

Riddick Bowe sentenced to jail
01/16/2003

Associated Press

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Former heavyweight champion Riddick Bowe was sentenced to 18 months in prison Thursday for the 1998 abduction of his estranged wife and children.

U.S. District Judge Graham Mullen had twice previously given the boxer lighter sentences that were rejected by the appeals court.

After Bowe gets out of prison, he must serve two years' supervised release.

In 1998, Bowe went to Judy Bowe's Charlotte home, forced her and the children into a car and set out for his Maryland home. At a restaurant in Virginia, Judy Bowe called her sister, who guided police to the restaurant.

In his prime, Bowe was a 6-foot-5, 235-pound heavyweight fighter who won his first 31 fights, 29 by knockout, to earn a title shot against Evander Holyfield. He beat Holyfield in 1992. He later lost a rematch.

Bowe earned more than $75 million in the ring.

Joy Rider Who Stole Missy's Car Jailed
Copyright 2003 World Entertainment News Network

A car thief who wrecked hip-hop star Missy Elliott's Lamborghini has been jailed for three years.

Joseph Johnson, 34, drove the Grammy-winning singer's $300,000 car away from the garage where it was stored and crashed into a traffic sign, a tree and a couple of curbs soon after. (Well, damn, was it anything else left to hit besides pedestrians?)

Attorney Mike Huberman says, "He takes a vehicle that is worth more than most houses and totals it."

As well as a three year jail sentence, the Judge also ordered $170,000 in restitution for the car and $1,975 for curb repairs at the wreck site.

(Maybe it's the broke woman in me but I don't see the need for a 300,000 car. And how did he get on her property and in her garage so easily? )

Soul Star Rawls Arrested for Battery

Smooth soul legend Lou Rawls has been arrested in New Mexico on battery charges.

The singer posted bail and was released from jail after he was arrested and booked on one count of battery against "companion" Nina Inman.

Police were called to a hotel in Albuquerque after hearing complaints of a fight. Inman told officers she and Rawls had been talking about their relationship when the conversation escalated into a fight.

Officers arrested Rawls and booked him into the Bernalillo County Detention Center.

The 67-year-old singer was in Albuquerque to perform two concerts at Isleta Pueblo's casino.

(Lou needs to sit his old a$$ down. Singing...."you'll neva find as long as you live, someone who loves you tender like I do ....)

Rapper Fabolous Arrested in NY

Gangsta rapper Fabolous is in trouble after police in New York arrested him on suspicion of driving with a suspended licence.

The 25-year-old up-and-coming Ghetto Fabolous star was driving his new Range Rover through Manhattan on Wednesday evening when he made an illegal turn, according to police.

Fabolous, whose real name is John Jackson, faces a charge of aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

(So what F.A.B.O.L.O.U.S. )

Mya's Car Crash

Smooth R&B vocalist Mya has escaped uninjured after crashing her Range Rover into a parked car.

The 24-year-old singer managed to demolish the parked Volkswagen Passat, but walked after from the smash in Washington D.C. last month unscathed.

Her stunning appearance at Monday's American Music Awards confirmed that the songstress is still in top condition.

The "Ghetto Superstar" was driving to her mother's house in the Washington D.C. area at the time of the collision.

(How the hell do you just run into a parked car? It's parked!)

Mariah's Diva Behavior Over Limousines

Singer Mariah Carey's diva-like behavior has been called into question again - by one of her former limousine drivers.

The pop star is always keen to play down reports she's a demanding diva, but driver-to-the-stars Paul Monroe claims her vehicle needs are both expensive and ridiculous.

He says, "We would get a call in the office for a fleet of cars to arrive first thing in the morning at Mariah's place. We'd all get there, then we'd sit outside her residence all day without moving.

"The cost to go nowhere was easily $7,000 to $8,000.

"I can't count the number of times that happened. Over the years, Mariah spent hundreds of thousands of dollars in cars that never got used."

Dr. J has ANOTHER child out of wedlock

Ervings parting after 29 years
The former Sixers star reportedly has admitted fathering a second out-of-wedlock child.
By Annette John-Hall
Inquirer Staff Writer

Julius Erving and his wife, Turquoise, with their children in a 1973 photo.

Cuddling during NBA All-Star weekend in February, Julius and Turquoise Erving were the picture of marital bliss.

Who could have known that in May, Turquoise would file for divorce? Perhaps not even Turquoise herself.

Admirers of the Sixer Hall of Famer and his elegant wife, married 29 years, were surprised yesterday to learn that the couple are in the midst of divorce proceedings. The news came as a double shock, accompanied by reports that Dr. J has accepted responsibility for a second out-of-wedlock child, whose mother Turquoise says lives in Orlando, Fla.

Erving, now vice president of the Orlando Magic, admitted in 1999 that he was the father of professional tennis player Alexandra Stevenson, then 18. Stevenson's mother is former Philadelphia sportswriter Samantha Stevenson, with whom Erving acknowledged having an extramarital affair in the early '80s.

According to a personal financial affidavit Julius Erving filed with the Circuit Court of Seminole County (Fla.) in November, he is paying $2,000 a month to support a son, who is named in the document.

Whether Turquoise's discovery that her husband has a second illegitimate child led her to sue for divorce - officially, she cites irreconcilable differences as the reason - is unknown. A lawyer for Turquoise has told the Orlando Sentinel that his client will not comment, and wishes to keep the matter private.

Turquoise is asking for the family's home, valued at $1.1 million, in the exclusive gated community of Alaqua, Fla. Julius is living in a condominium in downtown Orlando.

The couple, both 52, are parents of three grown children. Jazmin, 25, a model, and Julius 3d, 28, live in the Philadelphia area. Julius 3d, known as J, is co-owner of Erving Wonder, an entertainment management firm. Cheo, Turquoise's son by a previous marriage, is 30. The youngest child, 19-year-old Cory, was found drowned in his car, which he had driven into a pond near the family's home in May 2000.

The Ervings have lived in Florida since 1997, when Julius Erving took the job with the Magic. In Philadelphia for All-Star festivities, the couple party-hopped and stayed at the Rittenhouse Square Bed & Breakfast, where they reserved 10 rooms and hosted friends including Oprah Winfrey and Stedman Graham, Samuel L. Jackson and his actress wife, LaTanya Richardson, and casino mogul Steve Wynn and his wife, Elaine.

All weekend, the Ervings cut dashing figures. He would emerge from a stretch limo and gallantly open her door. She would rest her head on his shoulder as they strolled to the next affair. It was just like 20 years ago, when "Doc" was the Sixers' classy superstar and he and "Turk" were the city's golden couple.

Even now, it's hard to see Erving - who owns condos here and in Atlantic City, and is part-owner of the Philadelphia Coca-Cola Bottling Co. - as flawed. After 11 seasons with the Sixers, the elegant, erudite former Sixers forward remains Philadelphia sports royalty. He's a man former Sixers general manager Pat Williams, now Orlando Magic executive vice president, has said "brings quality to everything he's involved with."

But the Ervings have been rocked by tragedy and scandal. Nearly a year after a Florida newspaper produced the birth certificate that revealed Erving was Stevenson's father, Cory Erving turned up missing. The Ervings launched a two-month nationwide search in May 2000. At that time, they acknowledged that Cory had been battling drug problems.

Erving, who lists his net worth at more than $9 million and states that his 2001 earnings were just over $1 million, has been ordered by the Florida court to pay Turquoise Erving temporary alimony of $1,500 a week. She will also receive household expenses, including $8,000 for monthly credit-card charges.

Turquoise lists her monthly expenses at $15,301.25, including $2,000 for clothes, $1,200 for "cosmetics, toiletries and sundries," and $1,150 for "grooming."

Turquoise, a native of Winston-Salem, N.C., has not worked during her life with Dr. J. "I always had everything I wanted," she told The Inquirer in 1976, the year her husband signed a $3.5 million, six-year contract with the Sixers.

The former debutante and cheerleader had a three-year marriage just out of high school. Her son Cheo from that marriage was two months old when she met Julius Erving in 1971. They married a year later.

After Erving joined the Sixers, the couple moved to a lavish home in Villanova. Turquoise - tall and striking with luminous brown eyes and a cafe au lait complexion - served as the wife of Philadelphia's premier sports ambassador. She told The Inquirer that she paid no mind to the women who tried to get her husband's attention.

"The money, the publicity, the girls never bothered me," she said in 1976. "He gets all the attention on the court, but I get all the attention off the court."

On Monday, Julius Erving declined to comment to the Orlando Sentinel about his impending divorce or his illegitimate son. His silence was a far cry from his public statement following the Alexandra Stevenson revelation in 1999.

Turquoise knew about Alexandra "all along," Erving said then. By getting it out in the open, he said, "I feel relieved."

On Dr. J

The Dr. J news is disappointing. Why? I'm sorry, I loved Dr. J when I started watching basketball in the late 1970s, and reading about this is disconcerting.

First "Alexandra J" (sarcastic gloss for Alexandra Stevenson) and now this? Damn, I guess men are men all over, no matter the polish or gloss.

Big L was a rapper from Harlem. He was shot in Harlem back in 1999.

Here's a story that was on mtv.com back in 1999:

Lamont Coleman, better known as rapper Big L, was shot and killed Monday night in the Harlem area of New York City.

The rapper was gunned down in front of his home on West 139th St. and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 22-year-old rapper was part of the group Diggin' In The Crates which also includes Fat Joe, O.C., Diamond D, Lord Finesse, and Showbiz & AG. Big L was also known for underground hits like "Ebonics" and "Hit 'Em Up." DITC had recently finished recording sessions for its debut album, which will be released by Tommy Boy Records in May.

Tommy Boy said of the rapper's death, "Big L, a talented artist and a good friend to many, will be missed by the Tommy Boy staff."

Big L had released one album, 1995's "Lifestylez Ov Da Poor And Dangerous," which featured the debut of Cam'ron as Killer Cam (on a song called "Eight Iz Enuff"). The album also featured an appearance by Jay-Z on a track called "The Graveyard."

Rrrrrrrrrrra Kelly Performs

R. Kelly live at Continental Arena
Photo: Walik Goshorn

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey — R. Kelly sings to the heavens about needing a hug and on Thursday night he was embraced ().

The legally troubled crooner was showered with love by the thousands that flooded the Continental Arena for the Powerhouse, the first big concert put on by New York radio station 105.1.

At the top of the show when the evening's scheduled performers — including Nas, Ja Rule and Fat Joe — were announced, an eruption of cheers echoed throughout the arena, so it was no surprise when the sentiments carried over during the introduction of Kelly's first major arena performance since his arrest in June on child pornography charges (see "R. Kelly Arrested On 21 Counts Of Child Pornography").

Kelly — who returns to record stores on January 28 and to court on February 7 — didn't start onstage when the spotlights first hit him. He stood out in the crowd, silent for a few seconds while the people cheered. From the look on his face, the reaction almost drove the singer to tears.

"We thuggin', rollin' on dubs," he stiffly began to sing, waving his hands, trying to keep his composure. He then left the stands, and Fat Joe, who performed earlier in the night, returned to the stage to rap his Kelly-assisted hit, "We Thuggin'."

"I got four honeys in the drop," Kelly continued, now onstage with Joe. The two hugged at the end of the song and the fat gangsta left with a few words of encouragement: "Give it up for the R. That's my muthaf---in' n---a!"

Kelly then took a boom box and sat at the front of the stage with his legs dangling off. He thanked the crowd for their support and fought back tears. "I wanna try something different tonight," he said, collecting himself.

http://www.mtv.com/shared/media/news...e-cont-gos.jpg

For the next several minutes, Kelly teased the crowd. He turned the dial on the radio until he arrived at a station playing one of his jams. The audience would hear and sing a few seconds of "Honey Love," "Sex Me," "Bump 'N Grind" and "Slow Dance" until Kelly stopped at "It Seems Like You're Ready" and actually sang a verse.

He briefly let the crowd sing "12 Play" and later a brief part of "Your Body's Calling." When the audience sang the chorus to "F---in' You Tonight," Kelly began to chuckle before once again turning the station.

More teasing would come as Kelly scrolled through his catalog on the boom box. When he arrived at "Feelin' on Yo Booty," people urged him to sing, but he playfully mouthed the words, "I can't do that," and made the cut motion with his finger going across his neck. He then pointed toward the backstage area with his thumb as if someone told him the song was taboo.

R. finally performed a whole song for his finale, the party-friendly remix to "Ignition." "Bounce, bounce, bounce, bounce," he sang, now walking around with his mic and boom box. Before he left, Kelly used the radio one last time, playing snippets of tracks from his dead peers including Left Eye, Marvin Gaye and Big Pun. He quickly exited the stage while "Heaven I Need a Hug" played.

Kelly wasn't the only industry heavyweight who's had recent problems with the law to turn up for the show. Irv Gotti made his first appearance at a public event since the offices of Murder Inc. were raided a couple of weeks ago by the NYPD and federal agents (see "Drugs, Friends & Allegations: Inside The Murder Inc. Raid"). He did not address his problems as he accompanied Ja Rule and Ashanti onstage for their performances.

In fact, Gotti showed no signs of having any problems, yelling "I love my f---in' job," towards the end of the Inc.'s show, which capped off with "Mesmerize."

The night ended with surprise guest spots. Headliner Nas, who performed street bangers like "Ether," brought out Jadakiss and Ludacris for the remix of "Made You Look." AZ had joined his former partner in the Firm earlier.

Other surprises at Powerhouse were Erick Sermon bringing out his partner in EPMD, Parrish Smith, along with Redman, Method Man, Keith Murray and the long lost K-Solo. An old-school set was also featured. Along with Doug E. Fresh, who was on the bill, Greg Nice, Big Daddy Kane, and Dres from Black Sheep gave surprise performances.

Notable in her absence, though, was Eve, who had been scheduled to play the concert. No reason was given for her departure from the bill.

Kobe Bryant's Wife Gives Birth to Couple's First Child

LOS ANGELES — Lakers star Kobe Bryant missed practice, but he had a good reason: his wife was giving birth to the couple's first child.

Trainer Gary Vitti said Bryant called him early yesterday to say his wife, Vanessa, had gone into labor. Daughter Natalia was born a few hours later.

Twenty-four year-old Bryant is still expected to play today at the Staples Center against the Clippers.

Teammate Shaquille O'Neal, already a father with another child on the way, said he thinks Bryant will do just fine as a father.

LAKER REPORT
Kobe's Wife Gives Birth to Daughter
By Tim Brown and Mike Terry
Times Staff Writers

January 20 2003

Kobe Bryant missed the Lakers' practice Sunday, but he had a good reason — to attend the birth of his daughter, Natalia, born midafternoon, the first child for Bryant, 24, and his wife, Vanessa.

Trainer Gary Vitti said Bryant first called him between 7 and 8 a.m. to advise him that his wife had gone into labor.

Bryant is expected to play tonight at Staples Center against the Clippers. He is also expected to play, if selected, in the Feb. 9 All-Star game in Atlanta.

Bryant had said that he would not go to the game if it was too close to the birth.

Teammate Shaquille O'Neal, already a father with another child on the way, had some advice for Bryant.

"With kids you've got to hold them, rub their heads, stand there through all their pain," O'Neal said. "But Kobe's a tough guy, he'll be fine."

O'Neal was asked to recall the birth of his first child.

"It was during the [1996] Olympics when I announced I was coming to L.A.," O'Neal said. "I had to drive back from Atlanta for the birth, spend a couple of hours with him (umm, don't you mean, HER, Daddy? ) , then drive to the opening ceremonies. But it was fun."

UPDATE: Baby Natalia's middle name is "Diamante." I thought Kobe and wifey knew better.

Bobby Brown Sentenced

Bobby Brown was sentenced to eight days in jail for 1996 drunk driving charges on Friday after he turned himself in to authorities in Georgia.

A warrant for his arrest was issued earlier this week when he skipped a court appointment to go to the American Music Awards in Los Angeles on Monday. After surrendering himself, the R&B singer pleaded guilty to driving under the influence and speeding and was sentenced to eight days in Dekalb County Jail, 240 hours of community service, $2,000 in fines and $800 in court costs.

State Court Judge Wayne M. Purdom also ordered Brown to get counseling and suspended his driver's license for a year. Brown, who will be on probation for two years, was immediately taken into custody.

Brown had been ordered not to leave Georgia while awaiting trial on the charges, making his televised appearance at the American Music Awards a violation of his bond.

"Mr. Brown, you can't know from your position how tempting it is in this case to just throw the book at you," Purdom said, according to wire service reports.

"It could have been a lot worse," defense attorney Xavier Dicks said. "He was facing four years."

It still may get worse. Brown faces charges of marijuana possession, speeding and driving without a license or proof of insurance following a November 7 arrest in Atlanta. Authorities realized after that arrest that the singer's earlier case had fallen through the cracks when he failed to appear in court.

Fabolous Arrested Again!!!

Fabolous was arrested not once but twice this week in New York — for driving with a suspended license on Wednesday, and for weapons charges on Thursday.

The rapper, whose real name is John Jackson, was arrested Thursday evening in Brooklyn after a Suburban in which he was a passenger ran a red light. According to Brooklyn police, officers saw a gun handle sticking out of the back seat when they approached the vehicle. During a search, a second gun was discovered. A fellow passenger named Rascharm Davis and the driver, Reginald Rivers, were also arrested.

At an arraignment hearing at the Brooklyn Criminal Court Friday afternoon (January 17), the rapper was charged with two counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, making the alleged crime a class C felony, according to the Brooklyn district attorney's office. Jackson faces up to 15 years for the charge. He was released on his own recognizance.
