I'm not surprised that they haven't made public comment on the matter.

I saw on Good Morning America this morning that yesterday Colin stated that he found Lott's comments to be inappropriate. Regarding whether or not Lott should stay Senate Maj. Leader, Colin stated that the decision should be left up to the Senate.

I'll try and find Colin's exact words and post them.

A native Mississippian's POV...

Well, Most Mississippians know that Trent Lott is not for Black people and their issues and his record shows this from his good ol' boy days at Ole Miss. Oddly, he does have an overwhelming number of Blacks who support him I'm told. (although, I find that hard to believe... ) Lott's TRUE views and ideas surfaced when he thought he was in the comfort of other persons who he felt had the same views as he. Basically, in his effort to "fit in" and gain brownie points, he only stated what he truly felt for years. Remember, he was apart of the effort in his college days to keep his fraternity segregated. IMO, he's making a poor attempt to apologize to salvage his career. So Mr. Lott, why bother?
I liked what one columnist said about the BET interview..."if (Ed) he had asked for a car loan he would have given it to him." lol

What really hurts me is that this incident makes it hard for Mississippians to shed its (constantly mentioned) image of its past. We are sick and tired of being labeled and associated with KKK, being "country", segregated, etc. simply because we are "down south". Now obviously, racism does not exist solely in MS; however, comments like these from one "leader" in this state overwhelm the tremendous growth that has been made over the years. Sorry, I digressed.

Gracias. Although I have respect for Gen. Powell, he hasn't exactly been the most forceful person on certain civil rights issues.

That's exactly what appeals to many white Americans about the man. He is just a POLITICIAN, he isn't a civil rights activist. Because he is black, people expect (or want) him to be. He isn't, plain and simple. Through the years, white women have been able to make the transition from "women's right activist" to "politician", but for some reason, it isn't cool for black folks to do this. I find that odd because our movement for equality began before theirs! I don't think we should be looking for "Condi" and Colin to comment on this issue. They don't want to reapt what everyone else has already said, and they don't want to be viewed as militant black activists.

Yeah, Powell is already not a favorite of the extreme element within that party (those who actually vote in the primaries). I think Condoleeza(sp?) is more to their taste because she's firmly anti-communist. :p

TTT- Breaking news

Sen. Lott Resigns As Republican Leader

WASHINGTON - Bowing to pressure from his fellow senators and the Bush White House, Sen. Trent Lott (news, bio, voting record) resigned his position as Senate majority leader on Friday after his colleagues openly began lining up behind Tennessee Sen. Bill Frist (news, bio, voting record).

"In the interest of pursuing the best possible agenda for the future of our country, I will not seek to remain as majority leader of the United States Senate for the 108th Congress, effective Jan. 6, 2003," Lott said in a written statement. "To all those who offered me their friendship, support and prayers, I will be eternally grateful. I will continue to serve the people of Mississippi in the United States Senate."

Lott's methodical resignation — a terse statement released from the office of Senate Republican leader here — culminated a weeks-long controversy over Lott's racially insensitive comments.

His decision amounted to a 180-degree about-face.

Earlier this week, Lott had vowed to stay and fight, saying that "I was elected by the people of Mississippi to a six year term. ... I have a contract and I'm going to fulfill it."

Lott's fall followed a tribute that Lott gave earlier this month at Sen. Strom Thurmond (news, bio, voting record)'s 100th birthday party.

The Mississippian at the time hailed the venerable South Carolinian and said he thought the nation would have been better off if Thurmond had won his campaign for the presidency in 1948. Thurmond ran as a Dixiecrat at the time, on a mostly segregationist platform.

One Republican official said that Lott's office had informed White House officials beforehand of his decision. Despite speculation that Lott would demand a committee chairmanship or some other consolation prize, this official said Lott was stepping down with no strings attached.

It's about time...

I knew it was coming. The Republican party began to come out strong against Lott AFTER they saw that this controversy had spun of control to no end. It is the best move for the party. It's actually good to see people from his own party come out against the issue, and not just hide behind party politics.

It sure would have been nice if the Democrats did this against Bill Clinton (in large numbers) when he disgraced the White House  .... instead Clinton is hailed as a hero and he gets nominated to the Black Hall of fame   ..... and AA's wonder why the children of this generation have no sense of morals or values.... but I digress...

Fashion-based perspective on Trent Lott

Yeah, this is shallow, but this is funny. A look at the sartorial missteps of the fumbling ol' troglodyte retrograde BIGOT (does this sound better for the sensitive  )appears
