My goddaughter seemed to have a great attitude after the first round, texting that she had fun at every single chapter and didn't "hate" any of them, although she didn't really see herself fitting in at a couple of them. She got 16 invites back for this weekend, including 9 or 10 she "really likes." (She truly can see herself fitting in at several chapters and is keeping a very open mind.) She texted me after today's parties and said she particularly enjoyed the last party she went to but that all of them today had been fun and she found the sisters "easy to talk to" at every single stop. I told her to keep her good attitude, keep looking at it as a fun process, be relaxed and be herself. I hope she has another good day tomorrow. (And, I texted her mom to see if mama had enough wine to last the next 11 days...Ha!)

Talked to my daughter today. She finished up her 5 parties and was in better spirits today. She really likes 4 of them and the 5th one she enjoyed getting to know them better but is still on the fence with them. Her friends all had 8 or more parties but several of them said houses they liked in the first round they didn't enjoy as much in round 2.
She liked that she had her parties over with by this morning, that gave her the day to rest up and get ready for classes to start tomorrow. So now we wait to see if she gets invites back to the next round. She said the worst part about getting cut so heavily after round 1 was her first party wasn't until 5pm so she had all day alone to think back and wonder what she did or didn't do to get the results she did. Keeping good thoughts for everyone going through the process. |
Talked to my daughter today during break. She has really come to like some houses and is very worried about the next round of cuts. I'm glad they have a week of classes to keep them busy, but that wait is going to be so hard!

Hoping for the best results for our GC PNMs.

I’ve been following this thread with interest. I really knew next to nothing about the recruitment/rush process until I stumbled across the forum.
My daughter had 10 parties over the last two days. She was also initially sad to be cut from several of her favorites, but after the last two days she felt she made connections, and several from the “initial” bottom of her list are now favorites! She is exhausted, and has an 8 am to start the semester tomorrow. Hope all our girls can get some much needed rest before Friday. When do they find out how many parties they will attend in the Sisterhood round? |

I have a couple of questions: Last year the minimum quota number mentioned above was openly discussed and I'm not hearing much about it this year. Does anyone know the number? I'm also wondering about the guarantee of getting a bid if a PNM maximizes her options in pref which was another improvement last year. I know I might be putting the cart before the horse but would love to know if this is still in place. Thank you! Sending good thoughts to all of you and your daughters! |

Best wishes to them all! |
Sending everyone best wishes! I know the PNMs and the sorority women are exhausted. Hopefully they will all be able to get some much needed rest. And moms, make sure your wine supply is fully stocked, next weekend will also be a wild ride.

It is my understanding that if they maximize their options and are invited to the Pref round, they are guaranteed a bid. |

Best wishes, everyone! |
My goddaughter felt good about the parties she went to this weekend and really had to think to make decisions about how to rank her choices for the next round. I believe she is keeping an open mind and did a good job of mixing up the options she ranked in her 9. She said she's also totally fine with getting asked back to two or three from the ones she didn't put in her 9. She has four or five chapters that are emerging as her "favorites," but she, too, liked some better this round than she initially thought she would and can still see herself at home in several chapters. I encouraged her to get some sleep tonight and try to focus on classes starting the rest of the week rather than worrying about the decisions she will get back on Friday. Luckily for her, she is local, so she can run home for some home-cooked food and a hug from her mom if she feels like she needs it.

My daughter didn’t seem to think there was any way to be guaranteed a bid. Can you explain how that would potentially work? |
Yes, its a long wait and my daughter only has 1 seminar on Friday so she'll be sitting around most of the day waiting. She was asked to be a math tutor for one of the classes she took in the fall and I think she has an hour on Friday for that but can't imagine anyone's going to be needing assistance in the first week.
I reminded her that this week she needs to be polite and nice and not say anything negative about the process. She's not that type of person anyway so really shouldn't worry about it. I know this round of cuts can be harsh. If you Google Sorority RFM you can find some information that talks a bit about the math behind the process. Not sure if IU uses this fully but sounds like they have at least a variation of it. Its actually kind of interesting when you see the math behind this process. Luckily for my D, with only 5 still in the running she didn't have to make any tough choices on who to keep on her list. :D She didn't find that comment as funny as I did. |

Thanks to all the moms who are sharing their daughters' stories. I empathize with your anxiety and I'm glad you found the GC forum!
Best wishes to all of your daughters! It's been 5 years since my daughter went through a competitive winter recruitment at a different school, but I remember the anxiety all too well! |

I find this whole process just very interesting and we are pretty much staying out of it other than responding when she asks. I found this sight while trying to understand how the process works and it has a lot of great information. I hope all the women are getting caught up on their rest, getting settled in for this semesters classes and wish everyone out there the best of luck the next round. |
Great to have you with us BBH. We are pulling for your daughter.

I thankfully went back to work today after a 3 week vacation. I now have other things to occupy my time. I talked to my D last night and she's in great spirits. She said no matter what she's thankful for the new friends she's met through rush. PNMs that were in her building and groups that she may not have met if she hadn't rushed. I will definitely be stocking up on wine for the weekend also! Hopefully the new schedule of classes keeps them from stressing so much.

Does anyone else have a daughter doing this as a sophomore?

Hoping the forecasters are wrong on the weather this weekend! If not how will it impact rush if at all? 1-3” snow/ice during the day Friday and 8-12” Friday night.
|
Oh no! 😬 despite the bitter cold last weekend, I know they were told they had to walk everywhere. While there was a rush bus, my daughter said it was full most of the time.
|
I heard the same from my daughter she walked A LOT. It is nice that they try to group houses and times for them to visit.
|
In Indiana? We're supposed to get maybe an inch on Friday total.

Making it on time to the houses in the cold Indiana winter (with full buses, meaning the PMN's have to walk/run) is something that that I heard is a big stressor about recruitment week in the past. I wish IU Panhel could find a way to make it easier to go between houses in the cold (on top of the stress of being at your best once you get there, it makes recruitment week hard for many PMN's). In the cold, many end up sick after the week is done from the lack of sleep, stress of recruitment and starting the new semester classes. Hoping for good weather and good luck to all in the next round!!
|
Yes, the travel between houses is always difficult at IU. My goddaughter said she had to run to her last house on Saturday and barely made it because the bus was full. I don't know what the solution is, but I wish they could supply more rush buses or something. Best of luck to everyone this coming weekend!

As if there isn't enough stress going through recruitment in horrible weather, but now measles can be added to the mix:

Yes there is a set quota this year. Sororities were only asked if they would take any QAs. We have not been told what quota is since we won't know how many are still in the process on Sunday.
Yes lots of snow predicted. I'm a bit worried about traveling back to Bloomington on Friday night. Hopefully it will miss us completely. As for women not getting a full schedule, based on conversations with the Rho Gammas, grade cuts were for real this year. Just because PanHellenic allows someone to go through the process, it doesn't mean the individual sororities will pass through someone with low grades. (not that I know each and every issue with each PNM, but the Rho Gammas happened to mention that grade cuts were heavy this year). |
