Hey, TKE209Sweethrt, I did some checking for you, and there used to be a chapter of Phi Sigma Sigma at Rio! Maybe that was the national that one of the locals used to be affiliated with, because I still can't find any record of there *ever* being a Chi Omega chapter there.

Disclaimer: Of course, I didn't hunt through *every* NPC sorority's web pages, because I don't have anywhere close to that much time, so maybe I'm overlooking something. ;)

Congrats on your new sorority--I know you'll get enough votes! Most of the sorority members I've met have been really nice girls so I bet they'll vote in your favor, plus, you KNOW the fraternities will welcome a new sorority! :D

Peaches-n-Cream 10-15-2002 01:07 AM

Good luck! :D

Rio_Kohitsuji 10-15-2002 05:30 PM

Heya Jodi! Actually....we were looking at AXD! That's one of our top choices!! :) :)Heck, that's where we got our mascot idea from! (But, don't worry, no Fuzzie :) ) Umm...I don't think you know any of the girls though, but, I'll ask around :)

AchtungBaby80-What??? There was a national sorority here???? *faints* The Greek Life Advisor didn't say a -thing- about it. Hmm..I think its time to for me to do my own digging in the old associations inventory! Oh yes, I'm giving up on the XOA deal, I hear they were national and then I don't..oh well!! :) I checked the XO site one day and didn't find anything either *nods*

Everyone else :) - Guess what....we now have a total of 9 girls!! *does a little dance* Just 3 more and we'll have enough!! Monday night we're going to go bowling w/all of the ladies we have so far to really meet them altogether. Cause see, we all got a couple girls, yet, we haven't all met them together! Now it's just all coming together! I can't wait til next week because this week the 'main 3' is racked w/projects this week..we need some time off to get more things ready!! Well, I'm off to go to class.. :)

Soon-to-be-Greek-hopefully, Kayla

Good luck!!!!!

Kayla,
Our threads have basically been growing side by side for awhile now, and I just wanted to add my support to the list of people who are rooting for you! It sounds like you're moving right along, and I really wish you all the best in building a sisterhood that will meet all of your expectations and then some!

From one future Greek to another......

Yep, apparently there was! :)

Congratulations on your new members! I think you all should do a pumpkin carving and spread the word that interested girls are welcome to attend...who knows, you might get a few more great girls.

Hurry up and tell us when the AGC vote is--we're all dying to know!

Rio_Kohitsuji 10-17-2002 03:44 PM

Erica- I'm thinking...if your chapter and my chapter is close enough I'm thinking...party.. :)

Ach- Gag..the vote can really be anytime the AGC holds a meeting. Once we get all the members needed and everything else is when we'll ask for a vote to be called for us. Then in January (if all goes well) the Trustees will vote whether to let us on campus or not.
OH!!!! Monday night is when we're having a "mini-rush" down at the local bowling alley for all girls interested. But, I also have bad news....Krys has been been hearing rumours that we won't get past the AGC. I've talked to the Delta Theta's, a XOA pledge (a good friend of mine), the LOPsi's so far. We have the fraternities support..just now getting the rest is the problem. I'm just so scared of having any type of announcement like a flyer even saying anything of us, for fear of the bad reprecussions from the other soro's. *stresses* Right when I stop destressing..it all starts all over again!!

Arg, Kayla

sbhill2 10-17-2002 04:31 PM

Good luck!

texas*princess 10-17-2002 05:47 PM

TKESweethrt,

You might have mentioned this already, but do the other local sororities on your campus want to go national? While I can understand why some groups want to stay local, being affiliated with a national organization can have its benefits.

Do you have a Greek Advisor, or someone from Student Activities that works with the greeks on your campus? Do you know if they are interested in getting their local groups affiliated with inter/national organizations? (I am just wondering this because on my last campus all the sororities were locals, and the Greek advisor there invited national sororities to do presentation. Since then, two of the three local sororities have been affilated with inter/national groups and the interest in Greek life has definately increased on that campus dramatically from years past...and that is greek interest in both the inter/national fraternities that have been on that campus for *years* as well as the new inter/national sororities on campus!)

OK, I'll stop with the 1001 questions :p

Noooooooooo! They can't do that--you've worked so hard!

texas*princess, from what I've been told about this campus, they're very anal about Greek groups. Kayla, you correct me if I'm wrong, but I was told that it used to be a party school back in the 80s and then the administration tried to stop that by cracking down on the Greek system. It does seem weird to me, though, that national fraternities would be allowed, but national sororities forbidden. That makes no sense. I have no idea on whether any of the local sororities want to go national, but it seems to me that they should be allowed to if they want! Kayla, is there any way you could maybe find out if the school would consider opening up to national expansion? If any groups are interested, then you might not have to worry about getting past the stupid AGC--a national group might just start an interest group itself. I don't know any of the rules, though, so would that even be possible??

Achtung: Thanks for the info! And I think it is possible for an interest group to be allowed in the whole process if other sororities there wanted to go national (although it might depend on the school??). That is how an interest group did it at my other school. They were not a recognized sorority, but rather recognized as an interest group when the NPC organizations came to make their presentations, and now they are an official DPhiE colony :D (If you have read a bunch of my posts I have probably mentioned this a zillion times about them, but they really are an awesome group and I'm so proud of them!)

Kayla I really hope things work out!

Rio_Kohitsuji 10-19-2002 03:21 PM

On the subject of our locals affliating w/nationals: Here's the latest news, I guess that Delta Theta is still in limbo whether to go for DZ, our XOA is trying to re-affliate w/Chi Omega, and...the Lambda's said that they had the 'chance' to get a nat'l, but I don't believe them. lol (If you knew them, you'd believe me, lol)

We're all getting those lovely mixed feelings from the soro's whether they want another soro on campus. I mean, they might as well, really. Heck, we could go belly up and they have no threat anymore, if we excel awesomely then we help and stregthen the already-weak Greek system. I see no problem *shrugs*

Oh, we cant' have any type of 'interest' group. You're either an organization that'll never become Greek or you become a local GLO.
OKay, i'm going to go now, this week we're gonna be buckling down on getting girls and getting to know them and etc. *whews*

Any luck yet??

This reminds me of back when my chapter was still a colony and we were COBing to make total...our recruitment chair used to stand up at meeting and go, "OK, we're almost there, we only need 20 more girls!" Ahhh, those were the days.

Rio_Kohitsuji 10-23-2002 07:07 PM

*warning: short message as follows*

Well, monday night sucked. Krys was no where to be found, Erika was sick as a dog, and none of the other girls showed. So...it was canceled and will be held later. Right now everyone is trying to regroup. Krys is pledging a lil sis to AXN and Erika is still trying to get over her sickeness and me, well, I'm trying to finish up all the TKE letter shirts (6 more to go! :) ) So now..looks like next week is when work will actually be accomplished! :o

Rio_Kohitsuji 11-04-2002 09:42 PM

This is annoying. We're stuck. The girls that said they were interested haven't gotten back w/-any- of us. I'm really starting to doubt this. *sighs*

AchtungBaby80 11-04-2002 10:48 PM

What? Oh, no. I guess it's time to whip those gals into shape--tell them if they want in, that's great, but if they don't, hit the road. :p

OK, let's give them the benefit of the doubt. Maybe it's the time of year...everyone I know is up to *here* with assignments and tests, so that could be why you haven't heard from them. How are the other sororities doing? I bet they're having the same problem...happens here, too.

Or maybe those girls were just waiting to hear from you all?

texas*princess 11-04-2002 11:25 PM

Kayla,
maybe you should send them a friendly reminder ;)

Thetagurl 11-05-2002 12:15 AM

Hey good luck with the expansion but don't forget.. KAPPA ALPHA THETA...Theta is very strong nationally and is always looking to expand. Theta is the first greek letter fraternity known amoung women and we're still going strong. I will cross my fingers for you and whichever NPC sorority you choose

Thetagurl 11-05-2002 12:15 AM

Oh yeah here is the website www.kappaalphatheta.org
GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

erica812 11-05-2002 12:35 AM

Keep looking up! I certainly had points in my journey when I thought that I had finally hit the obstacle that would stop me in my tracks. Now, I'm just weeks away from our official pledge ceremony, and I couldn't be happier!!

You can do it!!!!

Erica

texas*princess 11-14-2002 04:33 AM

Kayla, do you have an update? :) i hope things are going well for you!

oceanphi01 11-14-2002 09:55 AM

Have you looked at Alpha Phi (yeah, I'm a little biased :p )? Good luck with this venture, whatever you choose!

Rio_Kohitsuji 11-27-2002 11:24 PM

The most freaking oddest ironic thing happened. Right when EVERYTHING is in shambles, I get an e-mail from Phi Sigma Sigma saying are interested in recolonizing here!!!!!! *screams*

Everything is in shambles, so it all just really stinks right now..and then the e-mail just topped it off :( :( It's like when I needed the e-mail, I had nothing..then when I get it..I have nothing to WORK WITH!! :( Sorry everyone I'm upset..but this really does bug me. Looks like there will be no new soro as of this next semester..as of this point I'm clueless on what to do and how to do it :(

*sighs* Kayla

AchtungBaby80 11-28-2002 01:36 PM

I TOLD you y'all used to have Phi Sigma Sigma! *to myself: "How come no one ever listens to me? Eh?"* :p

I don't know much about Phi Sig because we don't have it at UK anymore...it's long gone. But from what I've heard, it's a good organization--it just doesn't get a lot of attention because it's smaller than the big-name groups. Maybe there would be renewed interest in your sorority if people knew that a national organization has expressed interest in colonizing. If I were you, I'd e-mail Phi Sig and tell them that you are interested in bringing a national to your campus and ask if they have any tips. Maybe if they contacted the university, something could be arranged where you didn't have to go through all that establishing a local stuff first. I don't know. It's worth a try, though, isn't it?

oceanphi01 12-05-2002 04:56 PM

Just wondering how things were going, since I haven't seen an update in a while.

texas*princess 12-06-2002 08:23 PM

TKESweetheart,

I think it's great that Phi Sigma Sigma wants to recolonize! I think the fact that a national sorority wants to colonize there will greatly affect interest !

At the university I first attended, no one paid much attention to greek life until NPC sororities were interested in colonizing. It even boosted recruitment for the males (interestingly enough :p ) It was really exciting to get emails all summer before formal recruitment from interested women about the organizations.

I hope you continue your journey and come out strong in the end!

Lynzi 12-07-2002 07:13 AM

I just stumbled on your thread and have been reading through it...there is a similar thread in the rush forum (?) I believe...
It's so awesome that you're doing this! I don't think that a lot of us appreciate the work it takes to create a new chapter because we found what was right for us in a sorority already established on campus.
Don't give up even when things seem awful. I would hate to see you miss out on the all the joys and oppurtunities of sisterhood..
One thing that got mentioned on the other thread....these posts serve as a kind of journal of the founding...they would be a good thing to save for the history of your chapter. For our chapter, we know quite a bit about the history of our sorority nationally, but the local history is not really emphasized. About Phi Sig....Delta Rho 1986 Rio Grande College, Rio Grande, OH....is that the inactive chapter? If so, you would have alumnae support. Maybe you could find some of the Alum in your area.
:D I'm I Phi Sig, so it's kinda exciting for me....
Hang in there! Phi Sig or not, this is something worth doing!!

Rio_Kohitsuji 12-09-2002 08:43 PM

Sorry it's been a while since I actually posted something important. Finals is this week so no one is around. We lost one of our main girls due to her thinking that being a lil sis to a fraternity is more important then an actual GLO. (If you sense bitterness you're correct, hehe) Hopefully *crosses fingers* we (the remaining) can actually get things rolling again next semester. But here's the interesting thing, another soro is trying to rush me..sheesh. :D (Yes, I've told them about the new soro even..) I've told Erica about the Phi Sigma info, it's just getting everybody else in on it. Oh, the group that was formally Phi Sigma is still around, but, as a local. (it's the group that wouldn't have had their vote anyway, lol) Okay, I guess I'm going to go e-mail Phi Sigma now, heh :)

-Kayla

ps- Lynzi- thanks for the info about the former chapter :) :)
Dana- yes, I do listen to you, lol :)

AchtungBaby80 12-10-2002 03:22 PM

I just had a great idea--why don't you see if the sorority that's rushing you wants to affiliate with a national? *well done, Achtung!* If you like the girls, you can join that sorority and then there will be some numbers to work with. Assuming, of course, that that sorority wants to go national...but hey, it seems like a good idea. :p

FuzzieAlum 12-10-2002 03:41 PM

And hey, if Phi Sig wants to colonize, why not offer yourselves up to them? Say, "We want to go national ... you want a colony ... let's make a deal!"

Rio_Kohitsuji 12-10-2002 06:07 PM

Dana- Well, the soro that's been rushing me want to go national, yet, the only thing that's really holding them back is that 'it's too expensive'. Also, I really like the girls..but I don't feel comfortable w/their pledging process, w/o saying too much, if they were national, their charter would already been pulled.

Fuzzie- Heh..I'm trying to get as many as possible to take us..lol j/k

Quick thing before I go back to studying for finals. This is the thing I'm going to rant about for the time being..the girls expect me to do everything. Last time we had a 'formal' meeting I asked them if they could pull together a small constitution and all, I even gave them a few const's to look at yet, nothing came back. Oye. And I'm still getting the feeling they're just in it to get some letters..except for one. Okay, I'm finished for now..heh

Going national doesn't have to cost *that* much, especially since you all don't have houses. That's a HUGE expense right there. If we didn't have this house, my chapter wouldn't be paying the parlor fees, furnishing fees, etc. that we pay now.

If you did go national, the pledging process would definitely change, so don't worry about that! :p But in the meantime, just do what my dad did when he was a pledge...one day an active whacked him with a paddle, and instead of saying, "Thank you, Sir, may I have another?" like he was supposed to, my dad said, "Hit me again, Sir, and I'll kick your a**." But you've gotta mean it... ;)

Any updates? I hope everything is OK with you!

You should try Phi Mu

gcsmith 01-30-2003 05:41 PM

Kayla,

I wish you the best of luck. I went through rush as a sophomore and didn't pledge anywhere even though I was a legacy to soro on campus. When I got to school as a junior one of my friends approached me to help with a new soror on campus and by the end of my first semester as a junior I was an AGD. It is an amazing process and I hope that you get to experience it. I have gone back each year for formal RUSH and I get chills watching the chapter that I helped to create grow. If you have any questions feel free to PM me.

Best of Luck!!!
Erin

Rio_Kohitsuji 01-30-2003 06:27 PM

Well...here's an update.

Sorry everyone for not updating in well...a really long time :)
I have bad news...it's over. :(

One of the girls went nuts and decided she was going to be a frat mat and completely diss the idea of being associated w/a respectable GLO. (if you sense bitterness you got it, ;) )

Also, if just can't happen this semester, no matter how hard I tried to get girls that were interested. They thought that just because they were going to be the 'first' they wouldn't have to go through some pledge process or actual work. I guess they just wanted the letters. *shrugs and sighs*

Erika is still chasing her dream of being in a sorority and finding sisterhood here, and I hope she finds it :) Dont' worry, she's still one of my best buds :)

One day I may actually become greek...like...maybe an honorary to my great-great grandaughters glo! :p I guess I was just wanted to be apart of an actual sisterhood that had meaning behind it, not just one w/a cute mascot and a catchy name. Next fall will be my junior year and I honestly do not think I will become apart of any sororities here. Majority are falling apart due to cattiness within or really no "real" bonds between sisters.

So, this is it on this formally-hopeful thread :(

Kayla

ps: Thank you all for being encouraging and helpful on this!

oceanphi01 02-05-2003 12:36 AM

You can always go through Recruitment as a junior. This semester we have three new members that are juniors. If you really want to be in a Greek organization, then go for it. I just think it bites that so many people dropped out. Such hard work gone to waste. Good luck at whatever you choose!
