My mom was in a local sorority, and my Uncle was a Zeta Psi at UConn. No one else in my family has gone Greek though.

I'm the first in my family to 'go greek' as far as I know. I remember that my cousin was in a sorority when she was in college, but I don't know which one.
|
I'm the first in my family. My younger sister joined my chapter the year after I graduted...and she just got elected to the same exec position that I had. :) I'm a proud Pi Phi sister in so many ways!
|
I'm not a real legacy to any org. but here are the greeks in my family....
Grandfather & 2 Great Uncles - Delta Sigma Phi Aunt & 1st cousin - Zeta Tau Alpha If my boyfriend of 2 1/2 years and I stay together long enough to get married, our hypothetical children will be legacies to Alpha Xi Delta and Sigma Phi Epsilon. His dad is a Zeta Psi and his mom is a member of a sorority but I don't know which one.;) |
Mom - Alpha Chi Omega (Tennessee)
Grandfather - Beta Theta Pi (Davidson) Husband - Pi Kappa Alpha (Louisianna Tech/Georgia Southern affiliate) Me - Alpha Omicron Pi (Georgia Southern) My sister rushed Alpha Chi Omega, but declined the bid. |

I am a little worried about the youngest...they just moved into a new house and my sister-in-law decorated her bedroom in a lovely pink and green color scheme! I scolded my sister-in-law and said, "What, are you purposely trying to get Emily to turn Delta Zeta?" ;) Knowing all the great ladies on GC, though, I would be thrilled if my nieces just decided to go Greek! (My future daughters are another story, lol.) |
My mom is a Phi Mu but they didn't have it where I rushed. So, if I ever have a daughter, she'll have two houses where she is a legacy (not to mention a few great connections with other houses).
|
Just like someone else mentioned, not that many people from my family even went to college. So, I don't have a lot to work with. :) The only person I know for sure is my cousin - he was a Sigma Chi at Arizona State U. around 93 - 96 ish.
This is a good question! I think I'm going to get on my family's listserve and ask! ......Kelly :) |
I love my huge greek fam!!!
Grandmother (dad's side) AOPi Grandmother (mom's side) Chi Omega Mom - Sigma Kappa Dad - TEKE Aunt (dad's side) AOPi Aunt (dad's side) ZETA Uncle - TEKE (2) cousins ZETA |
I'm the first Greek in my family, but my future daughters will be KD legacies:)
|
I'm not a legacy to anything. Dad's cousin, who I like a lot is a Sigma Delta Tau, from the University of IL-Chicago. As for universities, I'm a double legacy to the University of Illinois, but that doesn't count :)
When I was in college, I went back to my elementary school to see my youngest sister in a play. I stopped by the office of the Reading Coordinator, who is by far one of the coolest women I have ever known, who's known me since I was 4. She was telling me that she too had planned to be a music teacher, but between her academics and pledge duties, the only time she could get a practice room was 5 am. I said "What group did you pledge?" and she replied "Pi Beta Phi." So I guess the moral of the story is that all great women go Greek. Or at least the ones that go to colleges with a Greek system. |
I'm the first person to go Greek in my immediate family. Other relatives are:
2 distant cousins Phi Mu (LSU) I can't wait until I have children and who knows, maybe the girls will be Thetas. It doesn't really matter to me if they rush or not and where they pledge, just as long as they're happy.:D |
I'm not technically a legacy but my nana is a Delta Zeta . . . My grandfather married her after my grandmother died but before I was born so she's the only grandmother I've ever known. She offered to write me a rec but 1) since we're not tecnically blood I didn't know if it would be a legacy rec and 2) the DZs on my campus are great but it just wasn't a good fit for me. I'm very happy where I'm at now. As a side note, with the increase in 'untraditional' families (stepchildren, adoption, and so forth) how is the greek system prepared to handle these types of families when it comes to legacy recs? For instance a woman and a man marry . . . this man has a daugther already. The woman raises the child from a young age but is not her blood mother. How would your orgs handle this?

Phi Mu recognizes step-daughters, step-sisters, and I believe step-granddaughters as well as daughters, sisters, and granddaughters.

Thought I'd chime in. Here are the greek connections in My family.
Dad-Phi Sigma Epsilon, (Now merged with Phi Sigme Kappa) Mom-Alpha Phi Sister, Delta zeta Wife, Delta Zeta Brother in Law-Sigma Tau Gamma Uncle, Delta Upsilon Aunt, Tri Delt Cousin, Phi Sigma Epsilon (merged with Phi Sigma Kappa) Cousin, Sigma Sigma Sigma Cousin, Alpha Kappa Lambda 2nd Cousin, Phi Mu Whew!! Thats a lot of greeks I'm a TKE. My family is just all over the place in the greek world. Really cool though. |
I'll share too
Uncle Pi Kappa Phi First cousin, Phi Kappa Psi Second (or first?) once (or twice?) removed, Sigma Alpha Epsilon Me-Theta Chi |
Well....Well....Well.....
My Dad and his dad are Delta Tau Delta from University of Penn...so thats a double legacy..... My two cousins are TKEs from UW. And Im a Fiji at Oregon State Univ. hehe, my orthodontist is a Fiji too! lol -Fish Phi Gamma Delta |
My uncle is a Theta Xi from the same school I go to, and my 2nd cousin, his grandson, pledged Sigma Nu, but dropped. My sister was thinking about rushing an incoming sorority at IU a couple years ago (AOPi I think), but didn't end up doing it. My uncle said he thought about rushing at Ball State about 20 years ago, but was treated like crap when he went up to a party to ask directions (he's blind). that kind of turned him off to the system. I went to his house this weekend though, and he lives a block from the Lambda Chi house, and the rest of fraternity row. I went to their house, and it was locked up tight, and I couldn't get anyone to the door though.

I may be a little snakey k (Sigma Kappa), but i am legacy to two different houses on my campus. My mom was an Alpha Phi and my grandma was a Tri-Delta. Rush was pretty brutal because I felt pressure from both of them to join their house. But, I am happy that I became a Sigma Kappa, it has made my college experience wonderful.

Last I checked, AEPhi only recognizes blood relations as legacies. :(

I'm not a legacy but i have 2 aunts on my mom's side (my mom is the oldest of 3) the older aunt was a Sigma at the school I go to and the younger Aunt was an ADPi. I'm the only greek in my immediate family though.
|
I'm also the first Greek in my family (as far as I know) Has anyone noticed that there are a lot of GCers who aren't legacies?
My aunt rushed at Auburn back in the early 80s and received a bid to Alpha Gam but then declined. My younger sister rushed at University of Alabama this fall but dropped out. Oh well. I have several cousins though so I'll be promoting Greek Life to them when it's time :) |
AOII's definition of Legacy:
•A l e g a c y is defined as a biological or adopted daughter, gr a n d d a u g h t e r, or sister of an initiated membe r, alive or deceased, of any chartered A O II ch a p t e r. Half-sisters or step relations are also included if the relation to the AOII m e m ber has been a close one. |
My connections are really monotonous
Mom - Alpha Xi Delta Mom's 1st cousin - Alpha Xi Delta Sister - Alpha Xi Delta Niece - Alpha Xi Delta None of the males were Greek, so my son isn't a legacy anywhere... Here's Alpha Xi's legacy policy: A legacy is the granddaughter, daughter or sister of an Alpha Xi Delta member. This includes half-sisters or step relations. Alpha Xi Delta college chapters are not required to pledge every legacy, but they are obligated to give each legacy special attention and careful consideration during recruitment. |
Mom- Kappa Alpha Theta (at Univ. of vermont)
Grandmother- Kappa Alpha Theta (Denison) Aunt- tri delt (Denison) Aunt- alpha phi (syracuse i think) I |
SigKapSunDevil,
That's interesting. Was it difficult going through rush as a double leg to Theta? Were they at ASU when you went through rush? I'm the first woman in my immediate family. My cousin is a ZTA and her daughter is a KD. I'm an AGD. My older brother is a SigEp. |
Actually, i always planned to be a Theta, I even visited the ones in my home town with my mom when I was in high school . When I was a freshman, I didn't find out about rush until it was already started (I got stuck living in some dorms across campus away from all the freshman dorms so I didn't always know what was going on). Then in the spring, I asked around and found out theta didn't have informal rush. A girl on my floor was a member of sigma kappa and I kept seeing signs for rush parties with them. She ended up bringing me to a rush party and I accepted their bid. I was going to wait for formal rush, but I had such a great time that I decided to become a member. The thetas have a great reputation on our campus, but I am really glad that I ended up in Sigma Kappa. The friends and memories that I have now can never be replaced.

My grandparents were Zeta Phi Beta Sigma, and my grandfathers side is almost ALLLLL ZphiB and Phi Beta Sigma.

Grandmother: Delta Delta Delta
Aunt: Delta Delta Delta Mom: Delta Delta Delta Cousin: Pi Kappa Alpha Cousin: Delta Delta Delta Boyfriend: Beta Theta Pi (soon to be fiance) Me: TBA- I'm a Recruitment Counselor right now and no I am not a Tri Delt. |
Here's my list of connections...
Dad: Phi Kappa Theta (Louisiana State University, ended up dropping out after a couple of years because he was so busy with school and 2 jobs) Sister: Kappa Alpha Theta (Purdue University) Cousin: Alpha Chi Omega (University of Houston) Cousin: Alpha Chi Omega (Stephen F. Austin University) Boyfriend: Legacy for Sigma Alpha Epsilon...he'll be rushing this fall, but he doesn't know where yet...I'll keep you guys posted...lol, and any Purdue (male) greeks on GC that are interested in a great PNM, let me know and I'll give you his info :) |
Just out of curiousity, why are people mentioning boyfriends with their legacy listings?
|
hehe...well, I know he's not family (yet...lol) but unlike a lot of people that seem to be responding to this, I don't have a lot of greeks in my family, so I thought I'd just add him to the list. Besides, I think I'm more excited about him rushing than he is :)

OH MY GOSH!! Candy, I had no idea you had 9 kids!! Bless you!! Im gonna have to do alot more recs I think!! |
I'm not a legacy to anything -- my family was very anti-Greek. If/when I have kids though I'm definately going to support them rushing... joining a sorority has been a huge boon for me.
Additionally... my dad's an AKL, which he's always cautious to promote as "not a real fraternity." We have them on campus here, though, and they sure seem like a real fraternity. I noticed they're not on the boards though. What's up? (NINE kids?!?!) ~ Jax |
I am the first women in my family to belong to a sorority (at least that I know of). My biological sister has meet my sor. sisters. They are trying to get her to get herr to think of joining my sor. when she goes to college in a few years!
