The word is Gamma Phi Beta will be back in 2 - 4 weeks. I don't have details of the plan from the University going forward.
|
I heard earlier this week that we might be back as soon as next week. I'm still waiting to hear back from the Chapter Advisor but we are hopeful. This brand new chapter was installed the end of April, came back and did primary recruitment after the hurricane postponed it, had their brand new officers installed and functioned for about 6 weeks before the suspension. They have had no training for recruitment next year, no events, no opportunity to COB. They still have to get to know each other. And had no housing to be able to even hang out together all this time.

I would hope they've had the initiative to go on building bonds via facebook or whatever it is the kids cyber-socialize on nowadays, and not completely ceased to communicate with each other because of an asinine edict by the school. This makes it sound like 2 sisters weren't even permitted to eat lunch together.

Texas State's suspension is lifting. There's a host of new requirements but they seem reasonable to me. Over the next couple weeks, activities will be back- no socials with alcohol until Sept 1st.

For anyone interested, here is a .pdf link to Texas State's recommitment & reinstatement program.

Can Chi Omega conform to the no more than 6 week new member period rule?

Texas State is targeting chapter GPA as the mechanizm to reform the fraternities. For IFC, the minimum grade point requirement for potential new members to accept a bid is a cumulative minimum grade point average of 2.7 or above. They are also coupling chapter grade point average from the previous semester to the number of allowable social events:
2.7 or above eligible to hold four (4) registered social events with or without alcohol per semester 2.5 – 2.69 eligible to hold three (3) registered social events per semester with only two (2) of them an alcohol social event with or without alcohol per semester 2.25-2.49 eligible to hold two (2) registered social events per semester with only one (1) of them an alcohol social event Below 2.24, will not be allowed to register any social events (The effect is that IFC chapters will have recruit better than 2.7 GPA students to maintain an unhampered social calendar. The school, by this change, is hoping that IFC fraternities will look at a student's GPA first when recruiting. Historically, chapter GPA at Texas State is abysmal.) For IFC, new member education period is limited to no more than four weeks. Each chapter must also submit information to the Greek Affairs Office at the beginning of each month during the fall and spring semesters, which will include community service hours performed, philanthropy dollars raised, etc. And a report card for each fraternity/sorority chapter and will be posted on the Greek Affairs website with the average chapter GPA for each long semester; chapter size; community service hours; philanthropy amounts raised; discipline record and current status of the chapter; national and university awards; and chapter highlights and achievements. There will also be a minimum score established by the Greek Affairs Office to remain active for the following academic year. It may seem a small thing, but the current status of the chapter being posted on a website will impact recruitment -- why join and pay dues if XYZ fraternity can have only 2 parties per semester? A smart guy with a 2.7+ GPA would likely not. |
Right? Be a Geed and you can have unlimited social events per semester.
