Is that California SU at Northridge??? I go to Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. We don't have AXiD, but we do have Alpha Phi, AKA All for Free...and they own up to that nickname...they are the blond barbies that think they are just oh sooo fabulous, and known on campus to have a drug problem...sisters stealing money from other sisters for drugs, not good!!!

Dear AmandaMarie:
Answers to your questions:
1) Weight: Sad to say, but some houses really do care a lot about appearances, and won't take 'big girls'. We have a house on campus that won't take a girl above a size 6, and prefers their girls in the 2-4 range, sick, I know...but that's just the way they are. IF they are this way, you wouln't want to be apart of their hosue anyhow. You want to go to a house that will love you for who you are, and not what you look like. They should be looking for what you have on the inside, not on the outside. Shine, be yourself, and you will be fine.

2) GPA: Most houses don't care what your GPA is, as long as it's above a 2.0. When you rush, you are required to give your most recent grades and GPA, PanHell does a screen just to make sure you've made the cut. If sororities discriminated based upon grades, half the houses would be empty! We like to have high GPA's, but wouldn't drop someone solely on their lack luster academic performance.

http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif If that's ok, of course.

Hi Lindsay--I'd love to be your "unofficial mentor"....just let me know
what questions you have as they come up!!

Oh..I take back the statement about the questions. I do have a question
right now. When is Greek Week? Is it before or after GOW? What exactly
goes on during this week? Ok..that was more than one question. hehe
http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Greek Week is after GOW.... First you will have GOW (Greek Opportunities
for Women), which is just a big info session put on by Panhellenic. Then
there will be open Rush Registration at the Union, as well as times to get
your picture taken for your Rush Cards. Then after that will be Greek Week,
where you will get a chance to tour the different chapter houses and learn
what it means to be Greek at IU.

I didn't really pay too much attention to any Greek activities or
anything last school year. I just knew that Yell Like Hell, IU Sing, and
the Little 5 are more fun if you're Greek.

Unfortunately, this is often true.... I spent my first year at IU as an
independent, and while I treasure that experience, I didn't feel like I
could really be as much a part of the big events like Yell Like Hell, IU
Sing, Little 5, etc. on my own, so I see where you are coming from!

Oh...I can't wait to get back to school in August. I miss it so much.
I'm looking forward to rush, and I'm going to get football tickets for my
dad. Yay! It's going to be a great year.
[/QUOTE]

You're so lucky! I miss IU so much... I'm glad to see that you're
treasuring it while you're there!!!

Let me know when you have questions.... I wish you the best Rush
experience!!!!!

Warm Regards,
Kristen (imsohappythatiama)

Hi Nancy,
I was an Alpha Phi at the University of Colorado and I assure you my chapter was nothing like that. Please do not characterize my entire International organization with over 140 active chapters based on your experiences with one. That being said, I believe my GLO is quite stong across the state of California with something in the neighborhood of 20 chapters. Some of which are wonderfull and some that, of course, aren't.

ilovemyglo 06-26-2001 04:16 PM

Amanda Marie,
My chapter has girls from size 0 up to size 22 so weight should not matter. Just don't try and wear something that doesn't fit you (there was an incident with a girl wearing a shirt so little for her she exposed a little too much!!).
As for grades, that is a reason you could be cut. My chapter's minimum GPA is a 2.75 from High school and a 2.5 for college. Some chapters demand a 3.0 at the lowest at my school is a 2.5. We are allowed to take one grade risk, that is it... that means someone who has made above a 2.2 (that is the minimum for initiation) but below a 2.75 I know that may seem tough but college is about grades, not sororitites and fraternities. They take up a lot of time and if you have a problem with grades then you may have more of a problem with a lot of time being taken up for pledging. Just something to think about! Good luck! I hope you do find some place to call home.

Hi Dreamerchick! I am a recent Alumna from the Delta Nu chapter of Alpha Xi Delta. I absolutely love being an Alpha Xi. Our chapter was a fairly diverse one for our campus. You really have to judge a group on that specific chapter, though. And you also have to just see if you click with the girls there. Best of luck in Rush to you and to all of ther other girls that are rushing this fall. I hope you all find the house that is right for you. If you have any questions about AXiD feel free to email me and I will answer them the best that I can.

lindsay_iu 06-26-2001 09:38 PM

Thanks Kristen! I'll definitely contact you once rush starts. I know that I'll be nervous about everything, and I'll need some guidance. I'm planning on keeping everyone on GC updated on my rush experience. Now, I just have to wait for it to get here.

LSUgrl 07-30-2001 08:05 PM

Hi! I'll be rushing at LSU this fall, in a few weeks actually. Good Luck to everyone!

TinkerbellMTSU 07-30-2001 09:22 PM

Hey everyone! I'm rushing at MTSU this fall (Sept. 5th-11th). I'm soooooooooooooooooooo excited! I can't thank everyone on this board enough for answering all my crazy questions. My mother said she wishes she'd had a resource like this when she was rushing. Back then the only stuff anyone knew about rushing was rumor or hearsay. Luckilly she still got a bid. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif
Well best of luck to *ALL* of you!
On the note about weight/size...I know how you feel...I'm a 5'8" and a size 14, and I feel really paranoid that people will think I'm too fat to join them. But like everyone else said, if they think you're fat, you don't want to be their sister anyhow. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

SaraKT 08-03-2001 12:54 AM

I'm wanting to rush in the fall but I can't decide between formal or informal rush. I went though formal rush last fall but i didn't get invited back after theme night. I think my age had something to do with it(I was a Junior at the time), but i have since changed my major which had brought me back down to sophomore status(non-enthuseastic "yippee")but i'm still an older student (If ya gotta know, I'm 23). So I'm really interested in rushing but I'm not sure if I want to go informal or formal. Give me some input here ladies!!! It will be appreciated!!!!

erniegurl00 08-03-2001 01:36 AM

Sarah,

Which do you feel more comfortable with, formal or informal rush? Personally I always liked informal more because that way you can really get to know the girls more. Do you have deferred rush? I think above all you should give it another shot! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

If the angels up above
Could hear us sing our song to you
They'd see that in our hearts
We're Pi Phi's from the start

SaraKT 08-03-2001 01:48 AM

I really do want to give it another shot. I think I know which sorority I want to be in, I'm friends with a bunch of the actives and alumni. But the the decision of which way to rush, I just can't decide and the deadline is fast approaching. My Alumni friends want to write recs for me (about 6 total) and they are from the chapter I want to rush. I just can't make up my mind!

Hey all!
I am going to be rushing Cal State Fullerton this fall as a freshman. I am SO excited about it. I really am going to try to follow the advice about keeping an open mind. In fact, I don't really even know the reps of the sororities at my school. We have AXO, ADPi, Gamma Phi Beta, Sigma Kappa, DZ, and ZTA.
Anyway, I would really love to hear about everyone's rush experiences. My rush starts Sept. 7, so most of you will be done by the time I start. Good luck to everyone!

Linda

P.S. If anyone out there is at CSUF, I would love to hear from you about your sorority!

MooseGirl 08-04-2001 10:33 PM

SaraKT:

you may want to consider if the sororities on your campus bid most of their women during formal or informal. Often many sororities have met quota or total after formal. If this isn't the case, and the GLOs pick up many girls through informal, then IMO I'd say go informal.
With regards to your age, I don't think it should matter. I know in my chapter we barely have a member under 20 since we have many women who've transferred or changed majors. More and more GLOs are becoming open-minded about the advantages of having "older" members.

RxyChrldr 08-05-2001 02:54 AM

Yes, i'm rushing in September at the U. of Washington..and i'm so excited! Rather clueless, but excited...

sctheta 08-05-2001 09:34 AM

Good luck to everyone going through rush on either side! I'm an alum, so it will be fun to read about everyone's experiences.

readytorush 08-05-2001 04:56 PM

Hey. I will be rushing at East Carolina University this fall. In fact, rush starts this thursday. I am so excited. Here we have 9 NPCs. They are in no particular order. Alpha Xi Delta, Alpha Omicron Pi, Alpha Delta Pi, Alpha Phi, Delta Zeta, Chi Omega, Kappa Delta, Zeta Tau Alpha, and Sigma Sigma Sigma.

AlphaSigLana 08-05-2001 08:48 PM

Readytorush- OMG you start this Thursday- that seems too soon! Well let us know what house you get in!

RxyChrldr 08-05-2001 09:24 PM

We've got 16 NPC sororities at U. of Washington..and the houses are all so amazing, it'll be hard to decide on a favorite! Rush doesn't start until Sept. 15th for us, and is 8 days long..good luck everyone rushing!

SaraKT 08-06-2001 01:49 AM

Well everyone I've decided to go through Formal rush again this fall. I'm turning my application tomorrow (yes, it's late) and rush starts on the 13th!! I'm so excited i can hardly contain myself!!! I can't wait!!!
Wish me luck!!!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

This is my first post on Greek Chat. I just discovered it today and it's absolutly wonderful! I'm a rushing Freshman @ FL State this year and it is so reassuring to see other girls with as much excitement and as many questions as I have. All the helpful advice and well-wishing from the sistera is awesome!

AlphaSigLana 08-10-2001 12:19 AM

Readytorush- let us know how rush was- I know it started today for you- how exciting!!! how long of a process is it? SOme schools are 3 wks long. My school is only five days- which is nice for us rushers otherwise I think we'g go crazy and broke bc we'd have no time to work!
Good luck!

M Gerrick 08-12-2001 08:49 PM

Ladies,

I can't wait to find out what sorority each of you pledges! Best of luck during recruitment. Don't get discouraged - hang in there and see it through. You will LOVE being Greek!!!!! Don't forget to post on Greek chat after Bid Day!

Ditto - I'd love to know who my new sisters are http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif And what's this about not accepting people over size 6 - how could any group be that shallow??? People at my school simply weren't cut because of weight. Best of luck to everyone rushing this fall http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

I agree aephi alum... I hate it when houses can be so shallow. It's houses like that that ruin it for everyone.

However, I would also like to add that we must always remember to be discreet when disclosing information about other sororities. True or not true, I don't think GC is an appropriate place to discuss it. You never know who's watching us. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif

Trinity 08-12-2001 11:24 PM

I'm going to be going through structured ruch at Eastern Michigan University this fall. I'm sooooo excited!!!!!! I've already met sisters in Alpha Xi Delta, Delta Zeta, and Tri Sigma (Sigma Sigma Sigma). They all seem so nice I've also met a couple of alumni members and 2 Rho Chi's. I cam't wait to go through rush! Does anyone have any advice to make it easier, less stressful and more fun? If so please reply to this or e-mail me at xtac_gemini@yahoo.com
