The only two I can think of for my campus is that (10) the admin bldg has emergency express elevators that go from the presidents offices to the parking under the building so he can escape in case of a riot. and..
(2) the stairs are built (really hard to walk up in a stride, they are really deep and shallow) so that a tank can make it up into the buildings in case of a riot. Did I mention that our campus was built in 73 during Viet Nam? Oh and the guy that numbered the rooms was a genius and died before he could explain it. (the are three sets of numbers, first set is floor, second is corridor and third is room, so if your English class was listed as 2.03.35, that would mean its on the second floor, third corridor, room 35....uterly confusing for first time freshman, thats why its SO fun on the first day of school.) |
We have the friendliest squirels in America....
The reason we don't have a football team is due to an agreement when Little Rock University became UALR and entered the University of Arkansas system... something about competition with Fayetteville (ducks the blows from the Razorbacks) But Britney Spears was never suposed to go here... in fact, when I lived in Louisiana, one of her cousins went to LTU and she said if Britney ever went to college it would be LSU. There was a rumor at the University of Iowa back in the day... My best friend lived on the top floor of one of the old dorms. There was a mysterious room down the hallway -- one of those doors that never opens, of a room that nobody ever enters. Of course the speculation was that people had died in the room, and the University kept it closed off because of the creepiness. One time, there were some film students up there making a movie about the room, and they had it all opened up and everything. I don't even remember what was in the room, but it wasn't much. The story had something to do with a disgruntled lover or love triangle and a murder/suicide or something like that.
Funny how it seemed so darn fascinating at the time, and now I can't even remember the details. I wonder what that room is used for now, if anything... Oh, and there was also the rumor that the A D Pi house was a drive in bank (not true) and that the Sigma Kappa house was a tuberculosis hospital (true, I think, but SK is no longer on campus). |
At Muhlenberg, the top floor of Brown Hall dorm is supposedly haunted. If you stare at the top floor of that building, there is a room with a blue light inside but no one can find the entrance to that room. Supposedly the third floor of that building is haunted with the ghost of a student who hung himslef back in the 1800s when Muhlenberg was a military academy
Our president was recently fired and there are alot of rumors going around about why. Another rumor is that our school keeps buying hawks to keep the squirrel population down but they keep flying away. At UVM where my little brother goes to school, there's a spot on campus where you must get kissed otherwise you will never marry and die alone. |
Indiana University:
***don't hold me to any of the following. I haven't studiend them thoroughly or n e thing... but here r a few I've heard!*** *Jared the Subway guy went to IU *Ur not a "real freshmen" until u get kissed in the gazebo near Maxwell Hall.. I never kissed in the Gazebo and I'm about to be a Sophomore. *At certain nights u can hear cries of unborn children... whatever that sounds like  *supposedly extacy was discovered or something at on of the sororities -remaining annonymous since it's still there- on campus?? Not totally sure how that one goes... afterall, it is just a rumor! *free tuition if u r hit by the Bloomington Transit *L500 is the "biggest week in college" *we have more trees on our campus than any other campus any hoosiers have some input on this? help me out :-p |
I heard that Indiana University was rated the #1 party school by the Princeton Review this year...congratulations, guys! :p

I know Jared did go to IU, and I know IU was rated number one party school by Princeton Review. My girlfriend sent me a response that Pres. Brand sent to Princeton Review. He was pretty ticked. She works at the IU Foundation, and went to IU for 2 years, before transferring to IUPUI to finish her Social Work Degree. My sister also just graduated from IU.

:( yeah Brand has been pretty harsh on the whole greek system lately... We've had quite a few chapters getting into trouble year 2001-2002

miami university -
*melissa joan hart's sister attended miami and was a member of DG or something. (also melissa is supposedly a witch....get it:D ) *wilson hall used to be an insane asylum *kiss under the upham arches at midnight and that's the person you will marry. *the formal gardens are haunted by the spirit of the missing student from the 30's. (i think this is true...long story) *First Run is one of Playboy's top 100 best bars. (it's even on the shirts. i'd like to know when) *abercrombie came to recruit models from miami. *sororities aren't allowed to have houses b/c of some alumnae who donated a ton of money on the grounds that no sorority would ever have a house. i think that's about it. shelley j sigma k |
alphaiota, is that Miami University in Florida or the one in Oxford, Ohio?
|
The only rumour i can remember is that Peter Jennings (who is a Canadian) falsely put down that he graduated from Carleton's Journalism school on the resume that he gave to ABC. i'm sure there's more, i just can't think of them.

Some about University of Iowa...
The one Valkyrie is talking about is in one of the dorms here (Currier) in 1913 when it was the all-womens dorm, there were three roommates on the fourth floor of the dorm that found out they'd all been dating the same man. The room now is a study room or lounge and people say that the lights flicker, but no one really knows the truth. Also in Currier hall there is supposed to be a half floor, like a set of five rooms that are under the stairway where there is no RA or something. No windows in the English/Philosophy building open. All dorms here are coed, and supposedly Burge dorm is supposed to be ranked by David Letterman or Playboy or something as the #1 party dorm in the nation. It's pretty crazy, but I'd say they all are. If you notice the windows on some of the dorms (Burge, Stanley, Daum) swing open all the way out and the part that opens are two panes about two ft. tall by two ft. wide, but only up to the third floor, the rest of the way up they crank up and down and there are three panes about 6 in tall. by two foot wide. I think it is to prevent someone from jumping out of the windows above the third floor, since they are higher up, the fall would be more likely to kill. Someone jumped out of the seventh floor lounge in one of the dorms (Stanley) and killed himself (true). Valkyrie, What used to be the Sigma Kappa house is now the ZTA house. It has a weird kind of look to it, too, so maybe it used to be an old sanitarium... Here is a pic. http://www.uiowa.edu/~zta/images/House/house.jpg There also is a true story about a doctoral student, back in the early nineties, who was upset that he didn't win an award for his dissertation, so he went on a shooting spree and killed three professors, the vice president, and the student who got the award, and himself, he also wounded someone I think, too. I'm not sure if anything is "haunted" because of this, but I know it is creepy because I have classes in one of the buildings where it happened. |
1. if you step on the great seal of ohio you won't graduate
2.every dorm on capmus but one is haunted, and Wilson hall is the most haunted because there are 5 cemetaries forming a pentagram with it in the direct center. (this one has even made it into the top 10 haunted placse in America) 3. We have an Old lunatic Asylum that the University has bought, and the rumor is that there are still torture devices and the chains that inmates were chained to the wall with are still there. however, i boubt that one because a lot of professors now have offices there and we have a lot of research going on there. 4. Matt lauer went to Ou but never graduated (true) and he is seen walking around campus about 4 tmies a year. I've never seen him, so I don't know whether that is true or not. |
rumor at valdosta state: ted turner's son went to school there
rumor at indiana university-bloomington: we're the number one party school in the nation(i thought that belonged to FSU) |
During 80's and 90's when our football team won two or three games (total, not per year), but everyone came to the game to see the band, and then left after halftime, the rumor was that any student who could prove he/she stayed for an entire game would get a full ride scholarship.

And, Matt Lauer did go to Ohio, and did graduate -- also in Experiential Learning. He also dropped out to take a TV reporting job in either Huntington or Charleston (can't remember which, but they are esentially the same market) and finally finished his degree and graduated in the late 90's. He was the commencement speaker. I have a videotape of part of his address where he says, "I am so proud to be a Bobcat." When the Ohio U. "Marching 110" marched in the Macy's Parade two years ago, he left the script and asked if he could "gush" about the band. I have not met him, but we traded some e-mails about Ohio University when I worked for NBC. Not only the dorms (especially Wilson Hall which has been featured on a cable network show about haunted buildings), but all of Athens County is supposed to be among the top ten most haunted places in the world. The great rumor, that I can't substantiate is that Paul Neuman was a student, and was thrown out of school for rolling a beer keg down Jeff Hill which hit and trashed a dean's car. There is NO truth to the rumor that I personally still hold the record for the most beer consumed and most classes cut by an undergraduate! It is TRUE that I wouldn't have to edit so much if I'd simply learn to spell and type. |
At Southern Illinois University:
* John Belushi bought his College shirt from Animal House at one of the stores in town * Every fraternity claims that Jenny McCarthy partied at their house at one time * One day it was so cold, everyone walked across campus lake to get to class until someone fell in * If the Chancellor hits you with his car, you get free tuition |

(now to my own school..)Rio Rumors: 1. In the early 90's Jay Leno had Rio Grande University as the #1 school in ugliest female students on his top ten list. (After seeing some pics from that time..I believe it..ick..thankfully in the last few years there have been really nice freshman crops, in which I was a part of..lol ) 2. In the basement of the freshmen boys dorm there is a blacklight painting of Britney Spears naked on the wall. (Oh wait..this is true..my bf did it..lol) My school is pretty boring..so this is all I could dig up..I'm gonna do some more research.. :) -Kayla |

I don't really know of any rumors on my campus...I'm sure there are..some stories are true though. We have an old cannon that sits on the walkway just outside the UC (University Centre) and it's aimed at the president's office...that is true but they say it can't be fired...
There are some from other Canadian Universities, like the University of Western Ontario. Appareently the rumor is that Sugeen Hall is the wildest residence at Western, and probably in Canada and is the best place to get laid...the rumor is so infamous that it Saugeen made the Letterman top 10 list one night. Another rumor at Trent University is that they have 2 reading weeks. They do in fact have 2 reading weeks and the story behind this is that they have the highest suicide rate at any university in Canada so they have 2 breaks so that the students don't get nurnt out and commit suicide. |

Anyway, my campus has nothing as sensational as that, but I did hear that: 1) Some sort of poll listed UK as having the hottest guys in the country (which is probably not true, but judging by the scenery, it *could* be ;) ); and 2) Th reason the doors on Whitehall Classroom Building are so amazingly heavy and hard to open is because the building was built in the late 60s and the doors were to prevent people from storming the building in case of a riot. Supposedly the steps leading down the hill to the Student Center were also built with the purpose of guarding against riots, because they're longer and flatter than regular steps. |

Back again. Actually, The Asylum Grounds (now known as The Ridges) was a favorite "parking" spot when I was in school. It was pretty creepy, which probably added to the atmosphere. If you didn't have a car, you went out to the old golf course. I think the faculty members use the chains and other devices now. We'll leave it at that. |

Oh, DeltAlum- Don't forget umm..that one large park for parking purposes...you know..the one w/the giant smelly lake.. lol :) |
One more
The eternal "virgin" rumor.
There is an iron sculpture in front of Marsh Chapel at Boston U simulating a flock of birds in flight. (Memorial to Martin Luther King, Jr, an alum of the School of Theology.) The birds are supposed to come to life and fly away when a virgin graduates. Some buddies of mine and I tried to hatch a prank based on that one. We really *were* virgins when we graduated--so we tried to figure out a way to unbolt the statue and hide it. "See? We TOLD you we were...." Didn't happen tho. Bummer. Adrienne :) |

DeltAlum-As far as Paul Newman goes, through the grapevine I have found out that he was my college roomie's uncle's pledge brother (Phi Tau) but he left school (don't know about being kicked out) after his first year. There you have it-lol...undeniable proof ;) Bowling Green rumors: -Tim Conway is an alum and was greek (Phi Delt). -There's some legend about the seal in the middle of campus, but for the life of me I can't remember the details. It's along the "walk to the left side and you'll marry the one you walk with" lines -The Chi Omega house is said to be haunted by the ghost of a girl named Amanda. The chapter leaves a blank space in every composite labeled "Amanda". It's a little freaky to look at! -Supposedly the Eva Marie Saint (BG DG alum) theater is haunted. -We have a cemetary in the middle of campus. It was always comforting to be following a funeral procession to class  -The music building is in the shape of a clef note and the rec center the shape of a falcon (our mascot). They look awesome from the air. *edited b/c I'm stupid* |
miami u of ohio in oxford. another rumor i forgot about is similar to ou's where if you walk over the miami seal you won't pass your next exam.
hey deltalum, hook me up with the nbc stuff. i just graduated in may and i'm still looking for a job in tv production. pm me, please!! shelley j sigma k |

Turns out this is one of the first threads i ever read after i logged on to GC. :D About the lady missing though, they said they found her naked, with her arms crossed on her chest, like 5 weeks after she had turned up missing. When she began to decompose, it left a stain on the floor in the shape of her body. Supposedly they have tried repeatedly to get up the stain, to the point where you can see the scrub marks, but the stain, remains. They also said that in one of the dorms some girl who was a witch was found dead, with pictures drawn on her wall in her blood. They say that no matter how many times they paint over the wall, the pictures continue to bleed through. Freaky stuff. Definatly scared me at 2am in my empty house last night :) oh, and for the record, this is Kitso's first post EVER concerning Nebraska.....and look, i even considering goin to NU!! Quote:
KS 361 minutes it would have taken me at OhioU before i decided to get the F*** out!! |

I believe that Trisha Hart was a Gamma Phi Beta Some more from Miami: If you rub the heads of the turtles on the Tri-Delt sundial it's good luck on your next exam The same woman that donated the money for the school not to have sorority houses also left money for the school to build a 10 foot brick wall around the only woman's dorm at the time to protect them. She died before it was built, so they built it underground. There is a headless motercyclist that can still be seen driving down a street off of Chestnut. There was a murder in Reid Hall, a freshman dorm, and the student's handprint can still be seen on the door. I heard that when they replaced the doors the RA's wouldn't let them replace that one. It is apparently now the door on a different room in that dorm. If you walk across the seal in the hub you will fail your next exam |

My sorority house actually had a girl hang herself out the front window with the pin light pointing at her!
Butler really doesn't have that many exciting rumors that I can think of though, I did hear that there are tunnels under all of the buildings though and supposedly someone was killed in them and that's why they are sealed off. The TKE house on campus used to be the ZTA house and a girl was raped and murdered in it supposedly and when the TKEs moved in her ghost moved across the street to haunt AChiO! Jess |
At the Naval Academy, midshipmen taking an engineering test at Rickover Hall that day rub the nose on the bust of Admiral Hyman G. Rickover, father of the nuclear Navy, for good luck.
|
actually some of those are a little off.
1. it is the delta zeta sundial. 2. the headless motorcyclist is out in the country a bit. i've done it a number of times. also, another pretty cool one is if you kiss under the upham arches at midnight, that is who you will marry. are you an agd at miami u? i used to be really good friends with a lot of agd's there. shelley j sigma k |

Just kidding. I lived in the dorm next to Wilson Hall (the alleged haunted women's dorm) but never met any ghosts. I also can't remember meeting any live women who lived there. Is was fun parking at the old asylum grounds, though (now, The Ridges). It was also said that there was more 3.2 beer consumed in Athens per capita than anywhere else on earth. That might have been true back in the days when you could drink "low" beer at 18 in Ohio. |
Quote:
Kind of a sorority rumor on my campus (I think it's true, but never investigated to find out if it really is) is that the reason we do not have sorority houses is because there is a city ordinance that says more than 5 women (somewhere around there) living together in the same residence is considered a brothel. I laugh everytime I hear it! |

First Run top 100 best bars.....please! Some girl just told me it was Frosh Run bc only freshman go there. My ex lives in Miami so I went there during the summer and its fun but definately doesn't rival the bars at OSU. :D |

As you wander around our beautiful campus, you will see much evidence of the impact of our fraternities and sororities. The Beta Bells, The Phi Delt Gates, the Delta Delta Delta Sundial, the Phi Tau Circle, and the new Chi O' Corner in front of the Shriver Center. 2. The one about the headless motercyclist I put up b/c I have also read about that happening at another school in Ohio. I am not positive which school it was, but I believe it was BG. |
Kitso~
I never heard anything about the UNL bell tower but then again I didn't go there. I'll ask my friends if they know. The only story I know about a haunting at UNL is from the Chi Omega house. I got this one from some high school friends whose sisters were both Chi-O's there and lived in the house. One of the sisters said that she shared a room with a gal and after a while the tv would start to turn on in the middle of the night. Like she origionally thought that the roommate just accidently left it on or rolled over onto the remote. But then one night she unplugged the TV and it still turned on. There was also something about the answering machine for the bedroom in the house. I guess the roommate made fun of the ghost and put their names and the name of the ghost on the machine....something like they wouldn't get their messages or their'd be a high pitched screetch |

I've only been waiting like 8 months for my answer ;) Finding the answer for me may sway me another step into my appreciation of Nebraska :D Kitso KS 3 6 1 |
