Ummm - okay - I'm sorry that you come from a DYSFUNCTIONAL pledge class....slapping people or being violent in any way, shape, or form has NOTHING to do with being GREEK! That would be like saying "Its okay that little Johnny got his nose broken by his dad -- I know things like that happened in my family" -- it doesn't make it OKAY!

NOPE - this type of stuff DID NOT happen in my pledge class or in my sorority chapter...why? Because its all about:

R-E-S-P-E-C-T find out what it means to ME

Not to mention being responsible, mature, etc. -- you know all those UN-SIGMA like things!!

Hey come on now she is the only reason I still watch this show. I just wish she would wear her glasses more often.

I hate to point this out and make people mad but ...

Finally-you and Zima are telling us that we're being catty, mean-spirited..but what just happened on the last episode of SL??
... just because the pledges on the show act this way does not mean you should stoop to their level, does it? That would truly be "un-[insert sorority name here]-like" behavior. Just a thought on the matter.

We have to keep in mind that, as this is a reality TV show, it has special circumstances. The people on it are not just characters, like they would be on a regular show -- they are real people who are living with the real ramifications of this show. I mean, it's true that you can't invent things that didn't happen, but everybody who's ever watched more than a few seasons of "The Real World" knows that the shows are edited to pieces. You could go out partying twice, both times early in the season, and the editors could splice that up into clips to make it look like you partied non-stop the entire time, even if you actually spent all the rest of your time volunteering at a non-profit daycare, studying Latin and practicing the violin. And for what we don't see -- there's tons of it. I've heard some of you complain about how nobody reprimanded Sylvia for slapping Jessica, but how do we know? For every week's worth of filming, for all of these girls that they're following, we get to see 22 minutes of actual show.

There's a difference between critiquing the show and critiquing the organization itself. I don't think any of us know enough about the Sigmas themselves to be making judgments about them.

I don't think there's anything wrong with making fun of the show a little, but I think things have gotten a little mean-spirited. Keep in mind that the Sigma girls didn't go into this with the purpose of creating a worse rep for Greeks. They honestly thought they would be promoting Greek life and spreading the idea that sorority girls aren't shallow snotty party girls, and MTV led them to believe this. Their intentions were for the best; their only crime was being naive. If we're going to be upset with anybody for further ruining the Greek reputation, it's MTV.

The Sigmas will be paying for this show for years to come. I think they need our support more than they need our criticism. "No matter the letter, we're all Greek together" . . . remember?

Exactly! Well stated! :)

so basically its OK to talk about jordan running into glass doors and sylvia slapping jessica....but when did we "critique" their organization??? I don't think anyone has said anything bad about their sisterhood, if it has happened that is over the top.

Kevin 08-02-2002 12:39 PM

I'm going to take Zuma's side on this one.

This thread seems to be very mean spirited and in generally bad taste.

We could start a thread about something that someone else's chapter did that was probably not the best idea just as easily.

I think that the ladies of Sigma realize that they may have made a mistake -- and if not then that's okay also. I just think this "I told you so" business is getting a little out of hand.

moe.ron 08-02-2002 12:51 PM

I'm so happy MTV Europe shows more music videos then anything else. :)

JMUduke 08-02-2002 01:06 PM

when is this show going to be over so everyone can try to heal the wounds mtv has created?

shadokat 08-02-2002 01:08 PM

Man, someone shows a bit of humor and everyone pulls out their soapbox!

Lighten up folks :)

As for the slapping incident, didn't they tell the new girls that they shouldn't hit each other?? I remember that in like episode 2, hence, Sylvia should get the boot.

Call me catty, mean-spirited, whatever you will...this idea was FUNNY! And aephi is getting her IKEA home soon :)

sunnygirl 08-02-2002 01:57 PM

well said, KTSnake...

This thread is pretty sad. Most of you did say that this is a bad idea, which- no surprise- you were right. But to mock this sorority by giving definitions of what you think is/is not "Sigma-like" behavior is really sad, especially when, in most other threads, sentiments of greek unity and pride are echoed (which is how is should be- it is Greekchat after all :) ).

Although many of you make the argument that all Greeks are affected by this show (which is correct), I don't think anyone is more affected than Sigma. While they put themselves in that situation, I can't help but have sympathy for them. I don't think anyone (or at least the majority of active sisters) thought that this would turn out the way it did. Personally, if this were my chapter, I would be devastated. Unlike RW or RR, this is a real sisterhood, and although MTV won't be there this semester, the sorority will remain, having to deal with the very real effects of the show.

If I am not mistaken, weren't there a couple of Sigmas on the board earlier? I thought I read that they weren't allowed to post because of a confidentiality clause in the MTV contract or something, but I doubt they disappeared completely (anyone can be a guest, right?). So to them and Zuma, I am personally rooting for Sigma. I hope that you can overcome this show, overcome the negative backlash and become even stronger. I have no doubt that you will.

Fraternally,
Sunnygirl

I'm glad she is, because her answer was damn funny. :D

Hmmm one word on my reaction after reading these posts: wow.

:p

The original intent of this thread is all in jest... some people need to chill out!!! I don't want to be mean or anything, but really all this leads me to wonder what in the world they were thinking when they signed w/ MTV to do the show? Everyone has seen at least *one* epsiode of some sort of reality television show like "real world" or "survivor" even.. Those shows aren't meant to "document the wonderful things people do for each other"... they are meant to get ratings.. and if drunken NM's hitting glass doors, and NM's slapping each other, gets ratings.. guess what?! They are going to put those in the show.

librasoul22 08-02-2002 07:36 PM

Well I think the thread started out in jest. But then when the Sigma member spoke up, y'all began to unfurl the claws and meow.

I mean really. All the "told you so's" What on earth purpose does that serve other than to fulfill your daily requirement for superiority?

If you don't think the show portrays Greeks in a positive light, then why continue to perpetuate the steoerotype that all sorority girl are catty and petty?

Go DPhiE!!!

AOIIAngel 08-04-2002 08:31 PM

Damn it, I need my cable back. Apparently I am missing a show that cause great debates between everyone. I will admit, this thread is damn funny though-and I have never even seen the show!!

phisigsigchic 08-05-2002 07:41 PM

Personally I agree with all the other greeks about how this thread was started as a joke. And please never make fun of celebrities? Yea right everyone does at one point. And everyone makes fun of RR and RW people as well. Come on those shows should have showed them that they didn't need to do this. And yes we all have a right to be mad because they were barely considered a Greek org at their school (this is what I have HEARD from other UCD people, don't start attacking!) and now they represent all the Greeks nationwide and they sure did a bad job of it. Maybe I should really be speaking more about the pledges or the ones we see rather than the sisters themselves. I actually have sympathy for them but they did agree to do this and now these are the consequences. And no one here was actually making fun of the sorority itself but the retarted incidents we saw on tv done by jordan, candace, slyvia, jessica, etc. By the way, none of the stuff aired ever happen in my pledge class. Like sorry but no one has ever slapped each other no matter how drunk or how good looking the guy. And if that should happen, there would be serious problems for that girl such as possibly getting de-pledged. Also, our new member process is alcohol free and we live in an alcohol free house. That way things can't get too crazy. But seriously people have been mentioning that Greek numbers are going down and I am afraid from what I hear through my non-greek friends who watch the show or have heard about it, that the numbers will go down even more

mmcat 08-05-2002 08:24 PM

just give it...

a reality transplant.
how real is real world, road rules or any of the make believe shows out there.
i've become a big fan of trading spaces...
guess what.
not real.
the sigmas did what they felt they needed to do.
now they just have to move forward.
my question is where will these folks strike next?
we all know they are asking.

NoShame_Gamma 08-05-2002 08:25 PM

Can't Help It!

Aside from the posts talking about how this thread shows "Un-Greek-Like" behavior, I think it's a crack up! It may not be the nicest thread out there, but it sure is one of the funniest I've read so far.

jess_pom 08-05-2002 09:13 PM

Ok, since there seems to be Sigma representation on this board, I thought I would post this question to every one...

Does anyone else consider the rock moving into the shape of the Sigma letters hazing???

Please, don't kill the messenger, I was just wondering what everyone else thought. If it has already been asked and answered, I'm sorry, but I don't have the time or the interest to go back through and look!!!

Teh? You don't have the time or the interest to go back and look? There are only four pages of posts! By asking, you show interest!
Go back and look lazy bones! Good god...lol

You shall be deemed "el sketchy mono." You shall be known as such for no longer than a period of 100 years. If you so happen to question motives of this title, you will pay dearly!!!!!

As for the question about the rocks and hazing, I would happen to think that most national and local orgs would consider something like that hazing?

phisigsigchic 08-05-2002 09:27 PM

Our national considers less than that hazing so I would imagine its total hazing. Your not supposed to force new members to do anything especially something away from campus, late at night, when its cold not to mention something so physical and tiring. So yes this is total hazing. plus actives did not participate and watched as pledges did so thats part of the hazing too. this is what i have heard makes it hazing.

jess_pom 08-05-2002 10:09 PM

Ok, I didn't want to come right out and say, "Zuma, if you didn't want criticizing, why did you haze your "pledges" on national television", but I guess I could have.

SGPhigirl 08-05-2002 10:18 PM

I think we should all stop judging so much. Im sure that this sorority did the show knowing that would be judged. But being from a local myself i can kinda see why they would want the exposure.

GtownGirl98 08-06-2002 12:16 AM

personally, not IHQ or NHQ

Answer the question about the rocks in your personal option, not whether or not your HQ would find it to be hazing. I figure that there is a question like this on the Hazing board but when does the title "hazing" lable too much?

Peaches-n-Cream 08-06-2002 12:35 AM

IMHO the rock thing was hazing.
