Wow Angels&Arrows, that must have taken a lot of work. I do have some corrections for you though.

First, AOPi does not have 176 active chapters. It's just not possible. Maybe that was total numbers of charters.

Second, according to the summer issue of the Alpha Phi Quarterly we have about 143 active chapters including our colonies and ongoing revitalization/recolonizations. From the day I pledged (way back in '94) up til now I've always heard we were fourth.

Despite my nit picking, that was really good work.

kddani 07-31-2002 06:46 PM

These numbers will tend to fluxuate as the year goes on. Last year, KD closed 3 chapters for different reasons. This year, we are chartering at least 2. So that means we were at 125, down to 122, but we'll be back up to 124. It's nice to see that so many are about the same size.
I think one thing people need to keep in mind too is when each sorority was founded. Year joining NPC doesn't mean anything, because each sorority was founded much earlier. For example, KD was founded in 1897 and didn't join NPC until 1912. There are other sororities that were founded 25 or more years before us that may have about the same amount of chapters. So I guess the growth rate would be interesting.
For anyone that's a stats major, it would be awesome to see all these kind of stats! I wish NPC would have a more up to date website, that thing hasn't been changed in ages. All those kind of stats would be just fun to have!

Angels&Arrows 07-31-2002 07:05 PM

APhi.. You are correct... the 176 is AOPi's total chapters chartered... However, I could not find which ones are currently opened! I figured, I would just post... and someone out here in GC Kindgom would correct me!!!! HELP!!!!!

Thanks for the up-date on Alpha Phi.. I will change it in a few... I PM'd you the list I pulled off APhi's website... Can you tell me which ones are closed?

This goes for everyone... If you have up-to-date information (oour HQ's websites are not always)... Please let me know...

Nit pick away... I think everyone on here, knows I do about Pi Phi!! We all just love our GLOs, (as we should)!

In the Greek Bond,
Shelly

Actually Alpha Epsilon Phi does have an active website. It's aephi.org. And we, Alpha Chi Omega officially have 133 open chapters not 132.

Angels&Arrows 08-01-2002 12:19 AM

Thank you AXWhoah...

Alpha Epsilon Phi appears to be updating their website, everywhere I clicked said "coming soon." I guess I should have been more specific... The same for Theta Phi Alpha... Both seem to have inactive websites... or websites under construction.

The Alpha Chi Omega website under collegiate search states 132 chapters, however, they list 135, so I assumed some closed... I am finding that many of our GLO's websites need to be updated.... I PM'd you the list, please let me know, what needs to be added and or changed.

Thank you!

Angels & Arrows, we are sharing a brain! I have been trying to do this same thing. ASA's % is like 48% - we have around 70 closed I think (we were one of the ones who lost lots when we went NPC).

You can still access TPA's old site which lists all the chapters but you have to go in thru the "back door."

I have some of the groups you don't at home, I'll PM you tonight.

hannahgirl 08-01-2002 12:14 PM

Delta Gamma has 142 Collegiate Chapters with #143 on the way being colonized in North Carolina this year. We have over 190,000 initiates and 14,100 of them are current DG collegians. We also have 290 alumnae groups!!
I got all this information off the DG website....Under Fun Facts....there is some really interesting stuff!!

When I watch Seinfeld, the first thing that pops in my head is "Hey, she's a DG"

Which makes the average chapter size 99 women!

Largest sorority

I'm pretty sure Alpha Chi Omega is the largest national sorority(though I'm not an Alpha Chi). I heard it while going through recruitment

whiteroses 08-02-2002 12:16 AM

well we are the largest npc sorority with the largest number or collegiate members :)

theta sig agd 08-02-2002 08:43 PM

Chi Omega is the largest org at this time! They are an awesome
organization, this coming from someone NOT in chi omega.

I think we are all proud of our orgs accomplishments and that is why we offer our own stats. Not that we discredit any other group.

Im not sure what the numbers for Alpha Gam are. I know my chapter was the 178th when we were installed and (210th one ever to that date) Since then we have had other installations and some closers but Im not sure on the numbers?????

Unregistered- 08-02-2002 09:46 PM

Alpha Gamma Delta has had 179 chapters installed, with the most recent one at the Univ. of Tampa. As of right now, she has 114 active collegiate chapters across the United States and Canada.

This November, she will install her 180th chapter at Chapman University. You can bet $$$ that I'll be there. ;)

UMgirl 08-02-2002 10:15 PM

I thought the U of Tampa was 180, and we had 179 before that? From my new member book, there were 179 without Tampa being included on that list. They would make 180 and Chapman would be 181

Chapman will be 180.

From the IHQ site:
On May 30th, 1904, 11 pioneering women came together to form Alpha Gamma Delta. Today Alpha Gamma Delta has grown to be an international organization with 179 collegiate chapters and 250 alumnae chapters, clubs and Junior Circles.

Stupid question....where is chapman???

SapphireSphinx9 08-03-2002 04:07 AM

Chapman's in Southern California... In Orange County.
We have a Chapter there too.
Congratulations on your soon-to-be new chatper!

shadokat 08-03-2002 10:11 AM

the opposite of largest

D Phi E certainly isn't the largest...we have nearly 85 chapters now (when the 4 colonies charter, more!). We have over 45,000 initiates as well :) Can't shake a stick at Chi Omega, but we are the second youngest NPC group!!

theta sig agd 08-04-2002 02:05 PM

Thanks SapphireSphinx9. We are all excited about our newest soon to be chapter!!

And congrats to shadokat and D Phi E on thier 4 colonies!!!!

Peaches-n-Cream 08-04-2002 11:53 PM

DFE might not be the oldest or largest sorority, but we have more chapters in New York State than almost every other sorority. :) We're really big all over the Northeast. :)

chioangel83 08-05-2002 03:36 PM

Chi Omega is the largest national sorority....we have over 225,000 members with about 178 chapters. We are the second largest women's organization behind the Girls Scouts of America.

Hmm.. I thought Chi Omega had more chapters than that!! Alpha Gam has 180 or so and I thought XO had more for some reason???

greeklawgirl 08-05-2002 05:52 PM

Wendy, I believe that the Chi-Os are referring to *active* chapters, not total chapters chartered. :)

Just a happy little note.. Our national wensite is now up, and it looks great thanks to the ministrations of the web mistress..

And on a side note, you can find a picture of yours truly amongst the pages  I feel famous!

HotDamnImAPhiMu 10-02-2002 12:29 AM

Bwahaha. Did the comment, "Can't shake a stick at Chi Omega" crack anybody else up?

Congratulations girls :)

SigEp42 10-02-2002 01:02 AM

TPARose,
I looked on your web site and didn't see you where are ya? Unless your a different theta phi than I'm thinking.

UCFPhiDelt 10-02-2002 01:23 AM

Ok, so I don't think anyone has listed us yet...

Phi Delta Theta has over 172 chapters and 205,000 initiated brothers. The PDT foundation has in excess of 15 million.

We are not the biggest but we rank up there.

TPARose 10-02-2002 09:20 AM

Im smack-dab on the Chapters and Colonies page.. I dont remember when the picture was taken, and it's evident in the fact that I look kind of.. out of it. But what can I say! I'll take any kind of celebrity that I can :D

I hope y'all have a smashing day!

sbhill2 10-02-2002 05:42 PM

Wow...all these fun facts about sororities other than mine! Well, DG has been added to the facts on an earlier page but its fun to learn about the size of different sororities. One thing though, its beginning to sound more like a competition in some posts rather than a discussion. Let's try to keep this forum just a discussion about different sizes of sororities/fraternities rather than a competition about who is larger. This is so cool to learn about all these other ones!

ksig600 10-02-2002 06:45 PM

With over 200,000 initiates, 204 chapters, and 6 colonies, Kappa Sigma HAS to be in the top 5.

CarolinaDG 10-03-2002 10:07 AM

Are there Panhellenic National awards? Like, Order of Omega awards on a national level? I'd like to see where everyone lies as far as strength as well as numbers.

And whoever said something about the region thing, that's definitely true. ZTA is really strong in South Carolina, but Alpha Xi Delta, for example, although the one chapter that they have is strong, that's the only one in SC. But also, even the same sorority in the same state can hold different reputations. Kappa Kappa Gamma at Clemson has the complete opposite reputation from Kappa Kappa Gamma here, for example. And Theta, which was struggling with numbers here before they left, is one of the biggest at Clemson. I have no idea how that happens. I would think that it would be about the same (like ZTA or ADPi in this state, which are consistent from school to school) across the state.

To go back and to understand what was said:

What are some of the smaller national ones?

Are you, gphibgirl96, meaning NPC or any Sorority? Do you mean, active or total number of chapters?
If so, my Sorors and I, of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. have the men of IFC and the Women of NPC beat ! My soror, Lady Greek, said in an earlier post, that we have 393 collegiate chapters out of 887 total chapters, and over 250,000 members with over 35,000 active sorors.
Not trying to brag, but when asking questions like this, please be specific. Someone had said earlier that Chi Omega was just a bit smaller than Girl Scouts of America. Now, I can understand that the point was made to let you know how many ChiO members there are, but please let us compare apples to apples (Shout out to MysticCat! ;) )

MTSUGURL 10-03-2002 03:52 PM

If we're talking about ANY national sorority, Beta Sigma Phi has over 10,000 chapters. Actually, they're international, though, so I don't know if that helps you any. :)

honeychile 10-03-2002 09:09 PM

For what it's worth, when I was a new member, we were taught to memorize the NPC sororities, and to always remember that sororities & numbers can change drastically from chapter to chapter.

A little humility doesn't mean that you're not proud of your GLO!

Chi-O Stats

"Today, Chi Omega is the largest women's fraternal organization in the world with 240,000 initiates, over 170 collegiate chapters, and over 230 alumnae chapters. Chi Omega is also the second largest women's organization in the United States after the Girl Scouts of America."

I'm not completely sure, but I think the actual number of active chapters now is close to 176. I have no idea how many chapters have been chartered in total.

Though all Chi-O's are proud of being the world's largest women's fraternal organization, I'm sure we would all agree every organization is special in it's own way!

Of course, if the numbers in NiaX's post above are correct, then Chi-O is not the world's largest women's fraternal organization.

DGWannabe 10-04-2002 12:31 PM

you have to be careful....

I think you have to be careful b/c some people (not me but I have heard it) think that being the biggest is NOT something to brag about because you are not being selective enough. Biggest does not always mean best nor does it mean most prestigious and it varies so greatly from school to school. My chapter was an above average chapter, but my friends at another school always used to say things to me like, "GOSH! I can't believe you are an XYZ! At our school you'd never be that you'd be an ABC. XYZ here really is bad/snobby/rich/blonde/ traditional/athletic/ insert something I am not here." You know what I mean. Also, traditionally BGLO's have different colonization rules than NPC. I'm not saying one is better than the other, but the BGLO's at the many schools I've visited/attended never had many members. My last school had a chapter of 2. How can that be a chapter? If I had 1 million chapters of 2 I guess I could still be the "biggest" but really.....
But that is just my experience. It varies greatly where ever you go.

ROFL! This post just reminded me of when I was a Rho Chi and one of my rushees told me that she was the most interested in ABC sorority because it had eight members and must therefore be highly selective :D
