The Mason-Dixon Line separates Maryland from Pennsylvania. Yes, South
Jersey (the part across from Delaware) is south of the line.

This fact was drilled into my head as a pledge. "What was the first
northern Sigma Nu chapter, that is, the first one north of the
Mason-Dixon Line?"

SIRS! PI - LEHIGH SIRS!

No that wasn't hazing, at least not twenty years ago.

If that were one of my sorority's new members, I would want her kicked to the curb. At the very least, she should get a serious talking to about sisterly behavior from the pledgemom or the standards chair. Granted, maybe she did and we just didn't see it because she isn't living in the house but, if it did happen, I think that would have been something worth of seeing. And, the fact that it's drama makes me believe MTV would have shown it to us.

Well obviously not far enough below the line, because it's not "y'all" it's yall!!!!!!

kddani 07-30-2002 09:29 AM

I'm starting to wonder why they every bothered associating this show with a sorority. All it is is a single-sex real world type deal. It shows nothing what it is like to be in a sorority. If a pledge slapped another pledge, that would be a call for a standards board to handle. Physical abuse is never tolerated.
Also, in our house, if a sister/pledge cuts you off from drinking or tells you to settle down if you're crazy on the dance floor or whatnot, you listen or it is cause for disciplinary action. Obviously if you're behaving in such a way that someone's going to tell you to settle down, you're making an ass out of yourself and it's for your own good. And being a "cockblock" is common for sorority members. Preventing sisters from hooking up with some guy they'll regret is one of the best things. Our sisters look out for one another, thus why I believe that sorority members probably have a lower incidence rate of rape than non-sorority members. We have vows and promises to each other that are solidified through the sorority bonds that other friends don't necessarily have.

Actually Cream, James means Philadelphia ;) :D because South Jersey is just a suburb of Philly ;)

shadokat 07-30-2002 09:47 AM

Sorority Life last night....nobody would be in my chapter if they slapped someone across the face in a public place. They would be out, IMMEDIATELY. And that Jessica, man girl, buy a backbone!! The girl smacked you! If they said cockblock one more time, I was going to scream.

As for the Jordan/Candace/Amanda saga, I think that Jordan is absolutely right. Amanda is just morphing herself into whatever friendship she can. She is on my nerves too.

If I had to pick one of them to be my sister, it'd be Jordan, Candace and Mara! All three are REAL!! :)

33girl 07-30-2002 10:08 AM

Of all the pledges or sisters that I would want as my sister, I think I'd pick Pauli, because she's sarcastic and bitch like me. :D

I just want to ask - WHAT is with Candace constantly referring to Jordan's "perfection"? She doesn't look like that till she gets all the paint on, and even then, I don't think she looks that great. That dark lipliner - UUGGGHH!!! I think Candace and Mara are much prettier.

Danielle, I still haven't forgiven you for cockblocking me on my George encounter. LOL. But you are right - this is just a single-sex Real World.

Thrillhouse 07-30-2002 10:09 AM

Maybe Sylvia should be in the house instead of Dede, I mean she got more airtime last night than Dede has gotten in all of the epidsodes combined so far.

kddani 07-30-2002 10:14 AM

Sheila... i think you would've regretted it in the morning! ;o) at least i sure hope so!!!!!!!!!!! I think George needs a permant cockblock placed on him :p

sigmagrrl 07-30-2002 10:36 AM

Wow!

I got a stomach ache, literally, when I saw that Sylvia slapped Jessica (Is Sylvia a new member???). I cannot even IMAGINE hitting another sister!

I think so far, Mara and DeDe have shown the most maturity.

HOW THE HELL CAN JORDAN AFFORD A PASSAT?!?! Just an observation...

I think I don't like Jessica b/c she looks like this psycho I work with...

The episode was the most contrived and overdramatic piece of schlock I've seen so far....

LMAO! :D I think we have to remember that Dede isn't 21 and she isn't involved in the drama, therefore she is of little interest to MTV.

PM_Mama00 07-30-2002 11:20 AM

Ugh... missed the episode cuz I was having an awesome nite out with the ex. Can someone please give a full summary of what happened? Thanx!

ChiOJenn78 07-30-2002 11:57 AM

Yea, I can really see why they call this stupid show "Sorority Life"-since there is so much seen related to pledging a sorority.

-Sylvia slapping Jessica-totally uncalled for-in my chapter, she'd be gone. You just don't do that-EVER!! Sisters or not, it's never ok. And the way Jessica totally backed down about it-oh hell no. She needs to go on ahead and grow that backbone. I mean, who knows-maybe the guy was a serial rapist/STD king/all around bad guy-and Jessica was trying to keep her from making a mistake.

-Amanda/Jordan/Candace drama-who really cares!! This show is so freaking pointless.

And for the love of all thats holy-make the rhinestone Greek 101 shirts GO AWAY!!

maggieaxid 07-30-2002 12:15 PM

what i learned last night:
1. that i think jessica possibly sucks the absolute most out of EVERYONE....granted jordan, candace and amanda are annoying, but at least they have charecter. jessica on the other hand is a spineless, annoying, her nose in everyone's business, i think i am wonderful lil' brat. i don't like her.
2. sylvia was not booted for her actions. but i'm sorry, she was acting in "non-sigma-like-behvior", shouldn't she be taken out by the pool and have a talking too?? and yes, she was acting a bit slutty but by no means does that mean physically altercating someone she calls her "best friend".
3. We still have yet to define "unsigma like behavior"....apparently bitch slapping one of your new member sisters IS sigma-like-behavior.
4. jessica has a big ass
5. amanda's lips bother me and she is a tag-a-long and one of those people who morph's into what ever other people want her to be.
6. how do these girls afford all this makeup?????

maggieaxid 07-30-2002 12:16 PM

oh, i wish someone from UCD would get back on the board so we could talk with them about all this crap.

These were my favorites...especially #3!!! Thanks Maggie for making me laugh! :D

(Maybe the producer that Jordan allegedly slept with stocks them up with Maybelline :p)

I was thinking the same thing, I nearly spit my DR Pepper out everywhere when I saw her driving that!!! I have a friend who just bought a Jetta and when I was at the dealership I almost fell over when I saw the price of them !!!!

NatalieCD 07-30-2002 01:16 PM

I lived in south jersey for 17 years of my life. It is NOT south of the mason dixon line.

haha you guys crack me up

Richard(SNU) 07-30-2002 03:37 PM

NatalieCD, if you want to place a bet on that, please drop me an
email. I take PayPal.

Take a look here:

http://freespace.virgin.net/john.cle...sa/mas_dix.htm

The "classic" definition of the Mason-Dixon line is that it coincides
with the border between Maryland and Pennsylvania along 39 degrees 43
minutes N latitude.

Which city in Jersey are you from?

Still want to make a bet? :p

phisigsigchic 07-30-2002 03:50 PM

seriously these people need to get lives on the show. anything that mtv plays can not be taken seriously. i like the fact that someone referred to it as a single -sexed Real world. Actually its worse. Because in that show and in road rules them are somewhat nicer to each other. Anyway Dede I didn't even know her name until some of you mentioned it on this thread. Damn I can't believe she isn't 21 because she looks older than everyone else. I truly felt sorry for Jessica even though I would have slapped that slut back (and yes sylvia you should know, you were acting like a total slut). The girl was just trying to tell her hey I know for a fact this guy is a loser and because sylvia was ms oh so independent (really ms i am so freakin drunk) she had to get all in a hissy fit. You could have yelled but the slapping was way out of line. I would have de-pledged that girl myself. I am sure a lot of these girls did not finish their pledging because too many of them were probably embrassed to have to live with what they would be latering seeing on tv or they were kicked out. Jordan, I will continue hating forever nothing she can say or do will make me like her. She just looks like the type of girl that you have to hate. Way too much makeup and swears she so wonderful and is always bitching or complaining about something. As for Amanda, I understand because she is probably sick and tired of being in Jordan's shadow since Jordan always steals the spotlight. Now Jordan is angry that her and Candace are becoming friends. As for Candace, I didn't like her at first, but she is slowly warming up to me because she seems like she is making efforts. Mara seems cool and mature and all but for some reason I get the feeling she is somewhat of a hypocrite and not totally trustworthy.

shadokat 07-30-2002 05:07 PM

phisigsigchic--

Amanda just went from being Jordan's shadow to being Candace's shadow. She's a joiner, not a leader. Soooooooooo, un-sigma like

Are you sure? Cuz we don't know what "un-sigma-like" is! ;)

ThielGirlie 07-30-2002 06:35 PM

First of all, you guys crack me up with some of your responses... they're great! Thanks for making my day. :)

Isn't Sylvia the girl in the last episode that made the card for the pledgemaster after the retreat? She didn't have the right to slap Jessica (though Jessica WAS getting on my nerves a bit, I still think Jessica did the right thing.) I can't tell how many times I've been thanked by my friends for "cockblocking," or whatever they called it... Yea, I think Jessica needs to go on Ebay and bid on a spine for herself... just my opinion.

I'm kinda glad to see Candace isn't clinging to Jordan so much, and is starting to hang out with other ppl. Jordan needs to realize she isn't that perfect, and isn't hot-sh** like she thinks she is. For God's sake, buy some lighter-colored lip-liner! Arg! I think she should get points taken off for her makeup being so "un-sigma like" :p

Look no further...someone from UC Davis is here. :) I can't help but watch since it's supposedly about sorority life (and at UCD), but now I find myself wishing this show would just go away. Like most of you have said, this show does a very poor job of depicting college life, let alone sorority life. Lately it usually just ends up making me laugh at how MTV has edited the show to be less and less like actual LIFE!

ACTUALLY...I'm not for sure about other orgs, but I know that Kappa Delta has a trademark on the name Kappa Delta and the Greek letters, but i don't know about others, I assume if we do then other large houses do too.

AXWhoah 07-30-2002 11:21 PM

Granted maybe Sylvia was acting like a little bit of a slut but Jessica was handling the situation really wrong. You don't do the confrontation in front of the guy, that's just humilating and it's going to provoke a bad reaction. And sisters need to look out for each other but there comes a point when a girl is going to do what a girl is going to do. And that doesn't necessarily make her a slut. There is nothing wrong with being young and enjoying yourself as long as you are careful.

DZTUBAGIRL 07-30-2002 11:29 PM

As far as I know the Mason Dixon Line is between Pennsylvania and Maryland. Is this not right?

Anne Marie

wreckingcrew 07-31-2002 04:06 AM

In regards to the whole, "i can't believe this is being touted as sorority life argument"....no offense to the sigmas, but i don't see them as a sorority. To me, they are a campus club that supposedly has a religious basis. We have lots of these at A&M.

Now, i think this show is freakin hilarious. Granted, i didn't tune in expecting to see the inside of sorority life, one year of living with my AXO sister gave me more than enough of that.

What i don't understand is how after jessica called whats-her-face a slut she was surprised when she got slapped. Let's think about this, the girl's been drinking, and you decide to call her a slut in front of some guy she's trying to hook up with. Beneficial cockblock or no, you have to expect something.

I just want the UC-Davis people out there who are embarrassed about the way this portrays their school to know, last year, when ESPN was running it's 'Sidelines" bull-crap, there were lots of us Aggies who felt the same way. ( I for one think it's an anti-Aggie bias in the media ;) )

I would guess that trademark would apply in the event that a new org. decided to be just "KD". As sleezy as MTV is, I wouldn't put it past them to argue that they just "randomly" selected Greek letters to flash across the screen. Although most Greeks know what the letters mean, alot of other people just say, "Oh look at those greek letters."

maggieaxid 07-31-2002 09:00 AM

UCDPhiGirl- So what does the general greek population at Davis think of these "sigma's"? And can you define what is "UN-sigma like behavior"....none of us can. Apparently it means you can't dance all risque at a bar but you can bitch-slap your pledge sister!

I don't care what the circumstances were, it's never okay to slap a sister. It's not fair to say, "why was she surprised, she should have expected it!"

maggieaxid - I graduated from Davis two years ago, but can honesty say I (along with most other Davis students) had never heard of the Sigmas until MTV came along wanting to do a show. There are not a lot of visible local greek organizations, and those that are more visible are usually classified as "clubs". As for all of my sisters in Alpha Phi & most of the fellow greeks from Davis I've talked with....the Sigma's have become "known" all over town, as a joke! :P

I'd love to tell you what "un-Sigma like" behavior is, but the only thing I've heard from friends still at Davis is that it's anything that doesn't exemplifying Jewish Values, unity, trust, strength, & sincere sisterhood....so I guess that bitch slapping your fellow new members is a-ok?!

i know many posters said they like mara but i'm starting to not like her. on the last show, she was totally agreeing with jordan about amanda and i can't stand people like that. they smile in your face and then go behind your back and talk about you.. that seems to be a trend in the house. as for this really giving us a glimpse into sorority life, i didnt expect that at all even though i did hope to see more rushees talking and expressing their feelings about the sorority, the sisterhood, etc. it seems like all we watch is these girls dancing, drinking, getting ready to go out and dance and drink, and have drama. i'm sick of it but i'm tuning in next week. lol
and i didn't appreciate jordan acting like she was the hot stuff by telling amanda to apologize. i don't care what jordan says... i for one think that people change and make new friends. i think jordan just misses having a leech attached to her butt.

Are there reruns to this show? I dont have cable yet and want to see what all the fuss is about?

Richard(SNU) 08-03-2002 05:00 AM

I like Mara a lot, in that she has the total "Jewish Princess" thing
going on (I mean that in a good way!) and seems like a perfect fit for
the Sigmas.

On the other hand she just finished her junior year and already has a
pretty well-formed personality. My experience is that people who
pledge when they are 21 or 22 rather than 18 or 19 have a whole
different set of circumstances than the "babies".

But I really don't know - I think it could go either way. She seems
to adapt to whoever she's around. Since we never see her (or any
other pledge) interacting or forming relationships with the actives,
it's too hard to tell.

Also, she seems very giving and philanthropy-oriented, but will MTV
show the Sigma pledge class doing a philanthropy project? Images of
flying pigs come to mind...
