i actually think jordan's hair is really cute. and i have straight hair.

I'm glad to see that the sisters finally punished the wilder new members. I disagree with how it was done, though. The sisters should have voiced their concerns in general terms to a full new member meeting, without naming names, and then their standards board (or equivalent) should have had private meetings with each new member in question. Jessica should not have been told "you're not in trouble but all your housemates are."
We know they spoke to Jordan privately earlier on. Did the other new members have any inkling that their behavior was causing concern among the sisters? Or was it just "surprise, we're taking points away from you"? Jordan did have a point, though, that they were out celebrating Candace's 21st, which is a one-time occurrence - so getting somewhat wild should be acceptable. (Note that I say "somewhat" - they were over the top.) As far as age goes, I think Dede is the only new member in the house who's underage throughout the show. I, too, am disappointed (but not surprised) that MTV didn't play up other aspects of sorority life. They had a great opportunity to talk about Mitzvah Day, but all we heard was "she's doing community service, we're un-mitzvah-y, giggle giggle." But talking about community service doesn't bring you ratings... showing the girls getting piss drunk and dancing in bars brings you ratings. You know what scares me most about this show? The fact that I seem to be addicted...! |
these are real people
I know that we have all come to the conclusion that this is no longer about sorority life, but we need to remember that these ladies are real people. Let us try to not riticule them. They have feelings.
I also have a question... do you think that the pledge house came before or with MTV? I have never heard of a sorority having a "pledge" house with a pool and hot tub, at least not here in the East. I just wish MTV could keep the show real instead of going for the contriverse. As Greeks we already have an image problem, we don't need this also. Think of all the Freshmen women, debating whether to rush this fall and next spring. I think that we need to do some major PR work. |

MTV has a tendency to focus to on the contreversy b/c it keeps up the ratings up and ppl watching!! |
First off I gotta say that I have really curly hair as well and I never have used that much hair spray. Its actually really bad for your hair! Use John Frieda hair serum or other more natural products to de-frizz because all the hair spray is doing is making your hair hard and not natural which no one likes. Plus, I would like to clue Jordan in on picking up a hair dryer and trying to straighten her hair? I do that to mine all the time.
As far as the show is concerned, its crap. And I thought Real World and Road Rules were bad. First off, I am sick of it always being about Jordan and Candace. I am so sick so seeing those two all the time on the camera. You would think the cameraman had the biggest crush on them or something (wouldn't doubt that one). I don't blame the sisters for not warming up to them. They are a bunch of sluts! or at least thats what they portray themselves to be. I don't care if MTV is editing and they only show the party drinking scenes, you should know better than to act like that on camera! They are never going to get the fact that they are not only representing their sorority at UC Davis, but to the WORLD because they are being FILMED! Its like they have no self-respect. I would so have kicked them off already. Actually, most of the pledges I heard didn't make it to initiation. I would be extrememly surprised if either Jordan or Candace made it. I am sure if they did, their sisters are not happy with them now that the show is being aired and they all get to really see how bad things were! |
Someone straighten me out about something: During the criticism of the show and some of its members, exactly WTF does hair style and make-up (you not liking it) have to do with the show or the girls? It doesn't strengthen your argument.
Its like, "she is a serial killer but did you see the perm that looked like a poodle on her? And purple wigwams? I just knew she was bad news!" LOL So why do you guys feel compelled to mention it lol? |
because we can.
|
because we like to...so there! :P
|
LOL, you are not telling us that ladies bond by cutting up on other ladies' appearances are you? lol :p
(Edited to add) Saucer of milk to some of the ladies of GC . . . meow:) |
Yeah we do ... and by picking on guy's appearance's too!
|
OK, random question, but does anyone else find the commercial of Sorority Life where they're all dancing and chatting in different rooms with the song "The Sign" by Ace of Base playing in the background somewhat cheesey???? :p :p
Every time I see it I'm like "ugh, this is so set-up!!!" Just wondering if anyone else felt the same way. |
Ya know whats weird....the girls living in the house are totally separated from the rest of the pledges. They mentioned once that there were 14 pledges all together, but do we ever see them?? NOOOOOO! And what ever happened to sisterhood events? Apparently those rules don't apply to them? Wow I'm completely confused as to the point of this show now!
~Rebecca  "It's a PHI SIG thing!" |
You only see the rest of the pledges when its time for a weekly pledge meeting...
|
Someone called the girls sluts. From what we have seen that is a totally unfounded statement. So maybe they drink and they dance a little provacitively (spelled wrong, sorry!), we don't see them going home with random guys. In fact we've seen hardly any guys. They have not been shown to be sluts at all. And the reason they forcus on Jordan and Candace, CHARACTER DEVELOPEMENT. Viewers want to get to know and follow the girls not get random glimpses of a whole bunch of girls. And puh-leaze, like you didn't do some underage drinking when you are/were in school. Everyone knows it happens (inside and out of the greek system), I hardly think that it's bad press showing the girls drinking. And someone also said that Amanda was a follower, she so is! It's kinda sad, she's one of those people who adopt the personality of the people around her. At least Candace and Jordan have their own personalities. And I have never been a fan of Jessica and finally she is starting to show her true colors. She laughed at the girls who were in trouble, to their faces! Seriously, that was uncool, those are your sisters. In my chapter when one or more girls get in trouble it's the whole chapter that will get talked to and if punishment is in order then the whole chapter suffers. That's how I think the actives should have handled the situation, not singling out a few girls.

Someone straighten me out about something: During the criticism of
the show and some of its members, exactly WTF does hair style and make-up (you not liking it) have to do with the show or the girls? It doesn't strengthen your argument. It's easy, you just need to look at things from a female perspective. When you are born into the world with two X chromosomes, clothing, make-up, hair, shoes, all form a kind of language (especially shoes). The reason people like Jordan make such a strong impression is because she speaks volumes before she ever even opens her mouth. In last night's episode she was in tears because she felt like she was being attacked by people who were making no effort to get to know her for the real person she is. But... when you make such a strong statement people are going to judge you either way, so it's better to be outgoing and friendly so that people get the "right impression" of you. This is the kind of "well-rounded" behavior that sororities try to encourage in their ranks. See? It's really not that hard to understand. |
So when did Jessica become Mother Theresa meets sorority MVP?
As soon as she was introduced people on here were like, we like Jessica, she is a good example of a pledge, before we knew anything about her! Didn’t they show her blowing off her other pledge sisters when they asked if they were invited out with the other pledges? Doesn’t she claim that they aren’t accepting her while holding herself apart? Didn’t she make a wierd comment about them being really good-looking while explaining that they weren’t accepting her? Didn't they show her drunk at a bar and shaking her ass? Wasn’t she writing a note to her pledge sisters about their trouble-meeting when most of them were down the hall from her? Didn’t she laugh at them when they were in trouble? So she is so awesome why? Did I miss a meeting? |
Sorority Life???
I've watched the show a couple of times b/c the title entriged me... however, these girls are pledges!! They don't know what its like to be a sorority girl really! I'm sorry-- if its so much about these girls it should me "Life as a Pledge." Grrr..
I was thinking about how odd it was that it was this random jewish sorority... Sigma Alpha Elipson Pi.... Then I realized no one's Headquarters would let them do this, and NPC would have a fit. However, I if they are going to have it for girls, they need to have "Fraternity Life" as well! |

Oh, have you also noticed that their computer always has a Yahoo screensaver on it, and on the last episode one of the off camera pledge's laptops had a "Do you Yahoo!?" sticker on it. Gotta love commercialization... |

Ick. I'm going to be a Rho Chi this fall and I'm already getting a headache thinking about the questions my group will be asking as a direct result of this show. A couple other random things: I thought I should mention (since I know I'm more MTV-addicted than most people, LOL) that with these reality shows, the people who "lie low" in the beginning are often major players later on. So I'm guessing that Dede will get a lot more airtime later on. Conversely, the people who get a ton of attention in the beginning usually get less as the show goes along. Also, like someone said before, according to the photo album on SAEPi's website, all 6 of them either make it to initiation or get very close -- they're all accounted for in pictures taken a couple weeks before initiation. And James: Thank you, thank you, thank you. Jessica has grated on my nerves from day one and I've never understood the pedestal GC puts her on. |
Hey what's the address for their website?
|
I totally agree w/letting up on their hair. My hair is curlier than Jordan's so BE NICE. We can't help it!! But I think a good point was made about it that that much hair spray is BAD. Curly hair is dry, alcohol in hair spray dries it out, so her hair is prolly a mess. Just a thought, do you think MTV does their hair and make-up for some parts of the show?
Eaglechick-I'm a Poli Sci major too, but I don't think that's a reason to try and like Jordan (for me at least) if she is out of control, she makes Poli Sci majors look like we are all on our way to a major political scandal!!!!! |
Quote:
I wasn't mocking the curly hair...I have naturally wavy (very) hair, so I know its hard to keep under control. I would have to think MTV does their makeup/hair for some parts (No one can look that perfect all the time!!) Katey Alpha Gam-- I know that her being a Poli Sci major isn't a good reason to like her. With all of her alcoholic stunts, she is showing Poli Sci majors/Greek sisters are headed for a major problem... MTV doesn't see that the image that are presenting to the public is what PNMs in the fall/spring are going to have in their head when they go and choose a sorority/house! |
MTV doesn't care b/c they don't care about anything but ratings. Does anyone else remember the better days when MTV wasn't a bunch of corporate tools and they actually did cool stuff and it wasn't "All TRL all the time"??? God just once I'd like them to do something that isn't based on ratings again!! And I'd like to go on record that this could start with no more N'Sync and Backstreet Boys!!!!
|
Yeah, it was actually a time when the M in MTV stood for music!!!
|
Here is the thing
For the most part, all of us on this board are children of the MTV generation, correct. We are the ones who have watch the raise and supported the rise of MTV, so why don't we do something about it?
Why don't we tell MTV what we think? Tell them that they need to rename the show, that they aren't promoting Greek life like we were lead to believe, and that they really need to help the girls out with the hair situation. I am an MTV Really World, Road Rules addict, and now I am starting to be a sorority life just to see what they will **** up next. As the Chicago RW group stated on the reunion show, they had a lot of funny moments that weren't filled with controversey that they could have added to the shows. Too bad NPC didn't get involved with this, because it could have been a great PR move for the RUSH season coming up! If you were NPC/MTV what would you have done to protray a good look at the real pledge semester? |

Even if PBS or someone else would do a documentary on Greek life, and it would be positive - I still wouldn't want my sorority on it. That's my family. I don't want every little quirk of my family splashed over TV in endless reruns. Any more than I would want my biological family to be involved in such a project. |
MTV doesn't want the opinions of sorority girls..they just want to do creative editing and show the negative aspects of Greek Life..
|
I love this!
This is MTV.com's synopsis of this weeks episode. Sounds like it was written by a junior high schooler! Quote:

A possible benefit of the show...
A possible beneficial side effect of the show has occurred to me. Before you all start asking me what I'm smoking :D - I think the show may help younger local and regional GLO's in establishing policies and procedures for things like rush and new member programs.
For example, Sigma AEPi doesn't appear to have well-defined standards or a standards board. The sisters talk about "un-Sigma-like behavior" but exactly what behaviors are "un-Sigma-like" haven't really been defined (at least, not on camera). Neither have the consequences of doing something "un-Sigma-like". If the new members had been sat down right at the beginning, given specific examples of inappropriate behavior, and told that if they engaged in that type of behavior their membership would be in jeopardy, I think the girls would have thought twice before bringing alcohol into the house, getting plastered on Candace's birthday, etc. If they did it anyway, they should each have been made to answer (individually) to a standards board, and told (for example) "We're taking x points away from you because you were doing _____, which is un-Sigma-like behavior as we explained it to you at the beginning of your pledge period." In terms of rush, we've seen how bothered the PNM's were when they were asked about their religious affiliation, and how inappropriate it was when sisters discussed PNM's within earshot of other PNM's. Maybe this show will give not just Sigma AEPi but all locals a clearer picture of how things can go wrong and how it can be prevented. Just a thought. :) |
???
Why was Dede called into the meeting? We haven't seen her doing anything, let alone engage in "un-Sigma-like" behavior. This show leaves me with the feeling I'm only getting half of the story...I hate that feeling! Does it seem like MTV is editing the show to makes us boo hoo for Jordan b/c the big bad sorority sisters are picking on MTV's little princess??? As someone else said before, this show is a train wreck :(
|
someone please define "un-sigma-like behavior"....

We all have our theories and predictions (me included), but I don't think we will really know the effects until we start holding rush again. I'll be curious to see if a) numbers are up or down (which could be unrelated) and b) whether actives get questions that obviously come from the show (do you have a pledge house?)
|
We have 28 potential new members signed up to Rush our sorority which gives us a big selection to choose from.
We have had a few questions about the MTV show but most of the girls realize its pretty much a "man-made" show. Nobody has asked us about a "pledge house"...yet  |
Okay..so I had to create a little controversy, well, just because! I didn't realize that the sorority life message board was taken from the MTV site.....so under Fight for Your Right, I began a new topic "Since the Sorority Life Board is Gone" (or something close to that). My screen name on that thread is pssjadey, just incase you are wondering. I would love to see the feedback that MTV gives, or if they take the thread off of the board. I hope other Greeks will continue to post on that board, just to prove our point to MTV that something has to change.
LITP, Jadey:p |
I have posted on the new thread, however, after I posted on it, it seems to have mysteriously moved to the Taildaters board...what is up with that?
I wonder if they will put the sorority life board back up...wish I could have been there while it was up and running. dzsaigirl |
question?
watched the rerun of this week's epistle and wondered if a mandatory three night slumber party might be a little bit hazing? 14 girls and one bathroom is an adventure.
just 2 cents worth. |
