That would be Greg Kinnear! :D

I had to make a post... please don't let this thread go dead! This stuff is too interesting!!!

FuzzieAlum 07-15-2002 06:39 PM

Betsey Johnson is an AXD, and there are a lot of pink roses on the background of her site!

EagleChick19 07-15-2002 06:53 PM

Wow! The stuff you learn....Thanks for clueing me into the Greek symbols in entertainment! I hadn't really noticed before!

Anyway, Indiana Jones is always with snakes, our symbol. It was our symbol first and then Sigma Nu stole it. j/k.

Err ... in the movie, Indiana Jones HATES snakes ...

ZTAMelissa 07-16-2002 12:45 AM

The thing about ZTA symbols in the Little Mermaid is true, and so is the Hallmark crown thing. If you know ZTA symbols at all, then it's not hard to find them in the movie, but some are related to ritual so I can't tell you ;) but I just thought I'd let y'all know that those aren't just rumors...

Dionysus 07-16-2002 11:10 AM

I thought people weren't supposed to release things related to ritual.

ZTAMiami 07-16-2002 11:34 AM

Dionysus:

The Zeta references in the Little Mermaid are attributed to ritual but only a Zeta would know this. Private information was not actually released since only the animator (the ZTA) knew what she was doing.

Well... if they're mindful of the obligations that made them members then no, they're not supposed to.

Certain symbols, colors, mascots and mottoes are considered open (public) knowledge, though a deeper meaning to them may be explained in the initiation ritual.

For example, the open motto of my fraternity is Causa latet vis est notissima - Latin for 'the cause is hidden, the results are well known.' To an initiated member of Alpha Sigma Phi, that motto brings a new depth of meaning when the secret motto of the fraternity is revealed at initiation.

I am also a Freemason, and we have an unwritten rule in our lodges: if it's written or explained in the Monitor (the book containing the written portions of our ceremonies), it can be discussed openly with non-members, otherwise, it's esoteric and can only be discussed in the presence of members after certain security measures have been taken.

SnakeyKPledge 07-16-2002 12:34 PM

In one of the Jurassic Park movies the helicopter doors close and each has a huge theta and chi, forming theta chi...useless info. from my boyfriend...

KDShan 07-16-2002 09:31 PM

Dr. Seuss was a Sigma Phi Epsilon and his wife a Kappa Delta. From what I've heard his wife "edited" his stories and would add parts to it, one of them being a KD ritual-type thing, but she would never tell him which. Any initiated Kappa Delta can watch/read "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" and find a few KD things. I'm sure there are some Sig Ep things hidden in there too...

EagleChick19 07-16-2002 09:34 PM

Wow!!!!

SigEp42 07-17-2002 12:19 AM

The SigEp whistle (yes that’s right we have a whistle) was used in a movie but I forget which one it’s an older movie. I’m not sure who but one of our alumni must have worked on the movie because that is too random to be a coincidence.

Katey Alpha Gam 07-17-2002 01:42 AM

Ah but my AGD sisters-we do have a little reference. If you remember the ad that was out last summer for Fritos Scoops with Dave Gordon (is that his name, the racecar driver??? I don't like racing so I don't know) and his wife and she is pruning roses...they are red and buff!!! I do wish we had more. Quick, someone invent something cool or start a company and use a squirrel!!

Also, in the movie The Sweetest Thing (GREAT MOVIE BTW) when they run into the gas station bathroom, on the wall it says "SN Northwestern" cool huh??

JEFF GORDON!!!

:D

Any other Pi Phi references? Other than Suzanne Sugarbaker on Designing Women?

TG

Katey Alpha Gam 07-17-2002 10:47 AM

Jeff, Dave...they both have 4 letters!!! :D

I also just remembered that in Golden Girls (BTW Best show...EVER) Blanche Deveraux is going to her sorority reunion in one episode and she talks about the great times she had as an Alpha Gam. Which I thought was kinda odd b/c Rue McClanahan is a KAO, but I figured someone who wrote it is a sister or she has a family member that is one and wanted to say it for them. Either way it's super cool!!!

EagleChick19 07-17-2002 11:17 AM

:)

fairytate 07-17-2002 03:54 PM

For all those Alpha Gams out there....

Amber from Survivor in Austrailia was an AGD, as well as Gloria Loring (an actress from Days of Our Lives).

We've also had a Miss America, but that was in 1947! :p

This info, along with lots of other interesting facts about Accomplished Alpha Gams can be found on our website
www.alphagammadelta.org

Blaire 07-17-2002 03:59 PM

Betty White, "Rose" on the Golden Girls, is a Delta Zeta. I watch the show all the time trying to catch her say something about her sorority! (However, I doubt they had sorority girls in Saint Oliff!):D Oh, we used to have a whistle too! (I've just never heard it...plus I can't whistle so I could never do it!)

Blaire

So proud to be a DELTA ZEE!

TNAndy 07-17-2002 07:36 PM

My two cents....

There's a Beta Theta Pi paddle on the wall during the opening credits of the sitcom "Coach" (before he moved to Florida). I don't remember any episodes that specifically mention him being a fraternity member, though. (Maybe that's a blessing. ) As I recall, none of the actors in the show were Betas; one of the producers saw the paddle somewhere, liked it, bought it, and hung the prop next to the door.

But what the heck, I'll take free publicity anytime. ;)

tiner04 04-17-2007 04:37 AM

Coke

ive heard the reason Coke changed its colors from brown to red is because he married an AOII

rufio 04-17-2007 04:55 AM

michael eisner is a DU, and the mighty ducks logo (the mask and hockey sticks) resembles our superimposed letters (our badge) turned upside down. also, Delta Upsilon's unofficial mascot is the noble duck. and in the cartoon series the story line follows the legend of some alien thingy named Drake DuCaine. the Ducaine part comes from DU. like in delta upsilon, also member of the fraternity are often referred to as DU's and ducks.

LaneSig 04-17-2007 08:29 AM

Milton Caniff was a Sigma Chi and cartoonist who drew two popular strips (well, popular in their day). The first was "Terry and the Pirates". It was very successful, especially during World War II. Mr. Caniff also drew "Steve Canyon", another successful strip. In "Steve Canyon", Caniff added a lot of Sigma Chi symbols. He was notorious for dropping in Sigma Chi references in strips that were published right before rush. He also drew may of the illustrations that were in our pledge book, "The Norman Shield".

SigKapCoug 04-17-2007 03:41 PM

Um, some of these are completely ridiculous.

It's kind of like me saying "guys, (insert movie name) has doves in it!! Well, actually they are pigeons but everyone knows pigeons are just doves that are gray.... anyway, I TOTALLY saw a dove, so this movie MUST have been written, acted, filmed, and directed TOTALLY by sigma kappas."

But but.. you're telling me that it wasn't? :(

Obviously Prince is in love with a Sigma Kappa, heck maybe Appollonia is one. He did wear lots of purple and talk about doves crying.

P.S. I'd kill for some Sella's right now :(

There are pigeons in Mary Poppins, pigeons are gray doves, therefore the whole movie is about Sigma Kappa! Sorry thetas :P

There's not much to really incorporate into movies...or maybe it's all so subtle that even we don't catch it!

lyrelyre 04-17-2007 06:16 PM

I've often wondered if an Alpha Chi Omega worked on the set of or as a writer (obviously not a main one) on Friends. There was a screen in Monica's room that had lyres on it and Joey's agent's name is Estelle Leonard, who is one of our founders. It's probably a total coincidence. Other than that, I've got nothing.

AOE2AlphaPhi 04-17-2007 06:27 PM

Does anyone know about any Alpha Phi references?

I can't 100% confirm, but I've heard that several places. I wish our website would recognize the writer as a notable alumna if it's true. Seriously, Estelle Leonard and the lyres would be a huge coincidence.

mommamagnolia 04-17-2007 08:56 PM

I've always heard the fleur di lis in the Campbell Soup cans are because Mrs. Campbell was a Kappa?

And Kate Jackson, who was a real-life Kappa, mentioned being a Kappa during an episode of her 80's show Scarecrow and Mrs. King.

1908Revelations 04-18-2007 01:01 AM

In the Steve Harvey Show; Steve (an Omega) played Steve Hightower and in his apartment he had an Omega Psi Phi wreath that was shown almost every episode. Right fellas!

Well nothing has ever been made official by our headquaters, but the entire movie Moulin Rouge should hold a special place in any Phi Mu Alpha's heart!

Yea I've only seen this show maybe 5 or 6 times, and I caught it the first time they should his apartment. That's definitely the Omega crest...

Linda Denham - created the Care Bears. The Harmony Bear, was created especially for Tri-Sigmas. The three hearts in the middle replace the triangle, one of Tri-Sigma's symbols.
(from Wikipedia)

I know this thread is a few years old, but I find it interesting so I wanted to add this.
