More Oprah

Oprah Heading to Prime-Time
by Bridget Byrne
Jun 11, 2002, 5:45 PM PT

Oprah Winfrey is giving a little mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to Oxygen.

The talk-show mogul will host a new primetime daily show this fall for the femme-oriented cable channel.

But Oprah After the Show seems to be a kind of tit-for-tat deal.

Winfrey is a prime investor in the struggling Oxygen net, launched in 2000. Believing in the concept of targeting upscale thinking women, she ponied up $20 million and handed over certain rerun rights to her syndicated The Oprah Winfrey Show for a 25 percent interest in the cable channel.

However, in the April issue of Fortune magazine, Winfrey is quote as having regrets. "I would rather have put $100 million into Oxygen and kept my shows than put in $20 million and given them away," said the super-wealthy media star.

Now, according to Washington Post TV columnist Lisa de Moraes, Winfrey has those lucrative rerun rights back. Instead of repeats of her daytime show airing in September as planned, her new chat show will debut in their place. Oprah After the Show premieres September 16 and will run weeknights at 7:30 p.m. ET, repeating twice each night and once early the following morning.

Oprah After the Show isn't going to be much of a stretch. The host--who insists she will be leaving the air in 2006 and plans to scale back her daily duties before that--won't even have to get up out of her seat. The show is designed as a tagline to her day job. She'll tape each episode immediately after completing her syndicated talker, communing with the in-studio audience, which will be corralled for double duty.

"We are going to kick off our shoes, take questions from the audience and see where the conversation takes us," says Winfrey.

Geraldine Laybourne, cofounder and CEO of Oxygen, says, "There are a tremendous number of working women who never really have a chance to watch Oprah during the day. We are going to give people a chance to see Oprah."

Not many women are getting or taking the chance to watch Oxygen, which is only available in 41 million of the country's 105 million homes. Many more women seem to prefer rival Lifetime, the "Television for Women" cable channel, which is top-rated with viewers and advertisers.

Winfrey first appeared on Oxygen in 12 episodes of Oprah Goes Online, a how-to series criticized for being just a way for her to catch up on how to use the Internet, something working women viewers probably already knew how to do. The series occasionally airs in reruns. Additionally, 13 episodes of her show Use Your Life aired on Sundays last summer.

Laybourne calls the new arrangement with Winfrey a "win-win situation." Oxygen is hopeful that this new show will generate better word of mouth, putting pressure on cable operators to add Oxygen to their line-up. If so, that will be good for everyone's investment, including Winfrey's, whose Harpo Inc. empire is estimated by Fortune to be worth about $1 billion.

JUDGE MATHIS: Jawn's Juice column says TV judge's mistress is pissed.

Judge Greg Mathis
(Jun. 12, 2002) *According to reports, Judge Greg Mathis may be headed to Judge Mabelean Ephriam’s “Divorce Court” if the accusations surrounding him are true.
The television judge has reportedly had a secret mistress named Lawanda Duncan, who is a physical therapist claiming she had an 8-month affair with Mathis.

Duncan claims that during the affair she participated in orgies with the judge and that the honorable one gave her a sexually transmitted disease three different times.

Ooh wee! There's MORE. Lot's more 'juice' here: http://www.eurweb.com/articles/colum...2906112002.cfm

SWV
(Jun. 11, 2002) Reunited…And It Feels So Good: Guess who’s back together? Ugh huh, it’s SWV. You heard it here first that Coko (born Cheryl Gamble), Taj (born Tamara Johnson), and Lelee (born Leanne Lyons) have reunited and will begin recording a brand new album this summer. I spoke to two of the Sisters With Voices recently about the group reassembling.

“I’m very excited and nervous at the same time,” said Lelee about the reunion. Coko chimed in, “I’m looking forward to recording again with Lelee and Taj. I definitely think our fans will appreciate what we’re bringing.”

SWV tore through the ‘90s as the chart-topping New Jill Swing trio and scored big with hits like "I’m So Into You," "Weak," "Right Here," and "Downtown." One of the group’s biggest hits, "Anything," was featured on the “Above The Rim” soundtrack. In the summer of 1995, the trio lent vocal harmonies to the Blackstreet hit, "Tonight's the Night." SWV also recorded the intimate slow jam "All Night Long" for the groundbreaking “Waiting To Exhale” soundtrack.

In total, SWV recorded three albums: 1994’s “It’s About Time,” 1996’s “New Beginning,” and 1997’s “Release Some Tension,” and after their breakup, a “Greatest Hits” album was released in 1999.

After nearly a four-year hiatus from recording together, do the girls still think there is a demand for groups like SWV? “I think there’s a demand for groups period,” explained Lelee. “As far as girl groups, I think Destiny’s Child held it down for a long time. It’s funny because [when they started] we were like big sisters to them. To see them blossom like that, I think about us a lot. If we had the right direction and guidance, we could’ve been just as big,” she concluded.

It has been no secret that a major fallout between the girls caused the group to disband, so what makes this time around any different for the group? “We are adults now,” emphasized Lelee, who believes immaturity and external negative influences helped cause the group to breakup initially. “We’ve put the past behind us and we’re ready to work towards the future,” said Coko. “[We have] unity now,” added Lelee.

The future for the group now includes working on a new album. “We start recording in July when Coko finishes her play,” informed Lelee. The ladies are mum about a record deal for now and would only say that, “we’re entertaining multiple offers at this point.”

Since SWV parted ways in 1997, each of them has been quite busy with their individual endeavors. Lelee moved to Atlanta and her company, Margy Inc., partnered with a friend’s wedding planning business to book talent for weddings and receptions. She also took time to get her G.E.D. “I’m really proud of that,” exclaimed Lelee. “The average person would look at that as something very small, but it was a challenge for me because I wouldn’t get off of my butt and do it. It’s my biggest accomplishment in life!”

Taj moved to Los Angeles and started going to college. Though both Coko and Lelee know that Taj is graduating this month, neither can remember the name of her school or what she’s studying. “Honey, that’s the one thing I don’t know,” laughed Lelee. “All I know is that it is in L.A.” Ditto for Coko who said, “I forgot!”

Coko (who cut her long trademark fingernails more than six years ago) sang on Will Smith’s multi-award-winning smash hit single "Men In Black," the title-song from the blockbuster movie’s soundtrack, as well as recorded duets with Jon B. for the “Hav Plenty” soundtrack, with Johnny Gill for the “Booty Call” soundtrack, and with LSG on their self-titled album. She then released her debut solo album “Hot Coko” in 1998, with the standout single “Sunshine.” This year, Coko began touring with the Babyface and the David E. Talbert stage play “Love Makes Things Happen,” which also stars Kevon Edmonds of After 7, comedian Joe Torry, and Dawn Robinson of En Vogue. She is also featured on the new gospel album by Brent Jones & T.P. Mobb on a track called “Midnight,” and on Bishop Eric McDaniel's “We Are Healed” album on the cut “Some How, Some Way.”

SWV is not certain when fans can expect their new material, but for now, they just want people to know they’re back in stride again. “I’m sure we’ll get the support that we’ll need,” said Lelee about when the new music is finished. Keep your eyes and ears open for the return of SWV.

Brandy, Summa, Magna, Cum, or Thank ya Laude?

You know, I was just thinking about Brandy in light of the "Brandy's Baby Shower" thread. I was wondering if she ever finished college. Not that its crucial for her business...but if she had, I would really like to see her make that known. I would like that to be known so that our young ladies who see her as a role model of sorts also see that she is educated (if she finished).

It doesn't really matter, but...you know...

Did she apply?
Did she get accepted?
Did she register?
Did she pay her fees?
Did she attend class?

Just heard on the radio that Brandy gave birth to a little girl yesterday. Missed the name. Sounds like Shanae Smith but I will have to see if it is out on the net yet.

From Jawn's Juice:
Can’t Say Names: Sources say that the powers-that-be behind a new teen artist is using the exact blueprint of a current chart-topping superstar to make the newcomer a success. Insiders say that the people responsible for said new artist have even requested rejected tunes from the established artist’s current album for the upstart to rerecord. It has already been reported that the novice crooner’s first single is a discarded song from the veteran heartthrob’s junior album. Apparently the superstar is flattered that his disposable material is being recycled and that the neo singer is being patterned after him.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now, I was thinking Mario and Usher, and apparently a lot of other people were too. Sure enough, somebody dug up an unreleased track - Usher's "Just A Friend" that didn't end up on his latest album. Here's the link to his version.

So much to say...

Puffy & J-Lo : I think they really love each other. I think J-Lo dipped out on Puffy and wanted to get at him, so she got married. Is it true...I heard that Puffy and Hezekiah Walker (for those that don't know, Heze is a big time Gospel Artist. Additionally, he's a preacher, married and has a child) were "seeing each other." Is this true? For those who live on the East Coast, let me know because y'all STAY IN THE KNOW!

BeBe Moore Campbell's daugter: Sister girl has mad issues if that's the way she feels. I've noticed her in these videos acting....HOOCH! I love her mother! She writes excellent novels.

Tyra Banks: The reason why Webber wasn't excited about her hanging on to him is because of that MOVIE SCREEN FOREHEAD of Tyra's! Dang, she's stays in Head Start! And doesn't Webber have about ten kids?! I'm exagerating a little bit, but I think he has multiple children. Money or no money, if I don't have any kids, I'm not trying to date/marry someone with a lot of kids like that.

BIG LURCH: WHO IS THAT?! I've never heard that name ever before. But if he raps with Mystikal, he's probably big time. Y'all, I swear, this world is coming to an end. Anyone that can eat a human lung, go outside naked with blood all over them, and look up in the sky like he's checking out the scenery...you know it's over for us! I'm scared to have children. It's time to get on the knees and pray!!! That's scary as CHUCK!

Judge Mathis: Please say it ain't so! I like this man. I've learned so much about men in the past year, that this shouldn't shock me. If preachers sleep around, what makes me think that a judge wouldn't sleep around on his wife. This is waaaay off the chain for me.

NOW MY CELEBRITY DISH: Damon and Terri from Soul Food were also at the Tyson/Lewis fight. Rumor is that they're dating. Personally, I think that they make a cute couple. If I could be in her shoes for thirty minutes, I would be happy! I just wanna hug Boris' fine self!

R&B's Brown stops here for 'high fever'

Bobby Brown can't get a fever without raising the temperatures of those around him.

Brown, an R&B artist, spent last night at Mary Washington Hospital with what his publicist said was "a high fever."

He and his famous wife, Whitney Houston, arrived at the Fredericksburg hospital's emergency room about 4:30 yesterday afternoon.

They were on their way home to New Jersey from a recording session in Atlanta for pop singer Houston when they made their unscheduled stop.

Brown, 33, "was really not feeling well," his publicist, Nancy Seltzer, said by phone from Los Angeles. "He has an infection and high fever."

At the hospital, Brown was treated with intravenous antibiotics and admitted to a room.

He was expected to be released from the hospital today, Seltzer said.

Houston and Brown's big brown-and-gold bus didn't have any names on it but still caused a stir when it pulled into the hospital parking lot.

Employees, patients and visitors buzzed with the news.

As Brown was treated inside, a cluster of curious women stood on a sidewalk near the parking deck.

Across from them, the bus sat alone in a parking area behind chain-link gates. Security men in white shirts looked official with their cell phones. A city police car briefly pulled up.

Soon, security guards moved the women out of sight, and when they still didn't seem ready to leave, a guard ambled over and suggested that they do so anyway.

"Did you see Whitney Houston?" one woman asked him.

The guard smiled and shook his head.

"Is she on the bus?"

"If you have a patient in the ER, you can stay. Otherwise, you'll have to leave," he answered politely.

Not long after that, about 6:15 p.m., the bus putted off hospital property.

Brown gained attention in 1981 with the R&B quintet New Edition. The group had several Top 10 hits before Brown quit in 1986. He won a 1990 Grammy Award for a solo R&B performance.

He married Houston in July 1992.

Brown has since had troubles with the law.

According to the Web site MTV.com, he spent two months in a Florida jail in the summer of 2000 for probation violations stemming from his 1998 conviction for driving under the influence.

In August 2001, he was treated at a hospital in New Jersey after suffering a seizure, according to VH1.com.

At the time, Brown's publicist attributed the seizure to heat exhaustion, but Brown refused to submit to urine and blood tests at the hospital.

But they are not on tour, so why the bus? LMAO :D

Don't Call it a Comeback

Todd Bridges makes comeback on 'Y&R'
June 14, 2002 Posted: 9:37 AM EDT (1337 GMT)

HOLLYWOOD, California (Reuters) -- Actor Todd Bridges' life has often resembled a daytime drama -- so it's somehow appropriate that he's about to appear in an actual soap.

The former "Diff'rent Strokes" star has snagged a recurring role on CBS' "The Young and the Restless," which just marked its 700th week as TV's most-watched daytime drama. He will play Juice, a character "Y&R" executive producer David Shaughnessy describes as "a real out-and-out bad guy ...bent on revenge."

Since "Strokes" left the air in 1986, Bridges has had several run-ins with the law, including charges of drug possession, carrying a loaded weapon and assault with a deadly weapon. He was acquitted on the latter charge.

Bridges, 37, taped his episodes of "Y&R" last week and will make his first appearance on the soap July 12. For now, Bridges is only slated to appear on a few episodes, though Shaughnessy said he could return depending on how his storyline plays out. Bridges most recently faced off against Vanilla Ice on Fox's "Celebrity Boxing."

I felt the same way as you did! But, let me just set the record straight...Heze IS bisexual like most of these other gospel artists. Don't ask me why they choose to live this life, but it's sad. I attended the Gospel Music Workshop of America last year for the first time and was totally shocked to see all of my favorites switching worse than me! GMWA is nothing but a reunion for them. According to and article in Sister 2 Sister(I hate to admit it, sometimes I do read this mag). Monica refuses to speak on the specifics surrounding this according to Jamie Foster Brown(Sister 2 Sister publisher).

I don't know the circumstances of the Walker situation, but there is a condition called Bell's palsy that does lead to temporary facial paralysis. My mom got it during FWRC last year. For the most part, she's pretty well healed, but she feels a bit slack in some of her muscles.

From what the rumor mill is saying, Jarvis' brother died of unnamed causes. One day he went to the cemetery with Monica to visit his brother's grave. He was still distraught and ran to the car and locked the doors. He then pulled out a gun and killed himself. Monica is reported to have pulled out her gun and shot through the window to get to him. If this is true, I have two questions:

1. Why didn't you shoot the window out before he had a chance to kill himself.

2. How rough is your cemetery that you have to come packing heat just to visit a loved one?

Like I said, I don't know how much truth there is to the story so please don't shoot the messenger ( No pun intended).

Brandy and baby

Congratulations to Brandy and her husband Robert on the birth of
their daughter Sy'rai Iman Smith. Brandy's mom Sonja called us at Atlanta. Gossip to tell us that Brandy had given birth to a 6lb 6oz and 17 in. long baby girl on June 16th after only two hours of labor! Brandy was on her way to church with her parents when she realized that she needed to phone her doctor. After being admitted to the hospital, it was time for the show to begin. All of her family was there including her brother Ray J who recorded all of her yelling and screaming. Sonja said that Brandy took the
labor pains and delivery like a champ. She also said that Sy'rai looks just like Brandy as a baby, "White as snow" and she has Brandy's noise and forehead and Robert's gorgeous hair and thick eyebrows. And check this out Sonja said the baby is singing back to her already with her eyes wide open.

Soon after the baby came Brandy was up, had her clothes on and was ready to go home. She didn't go home until the next day, but the new mommy had gone out twice to get some good vegetarian food as soon as she left the hospital.

They're so happy about their new arrival. In three weeks, Brandy will begin work on her third music video from her album, "Full Moon."

Keep up the good work Brandy...

I have a pic also of the new baby so PM me and I'll email it to you! :D I can't post the pic because its just a .jpeg in my email.

Three weeks? Isn't that kinda fast?

PM my left eye

In case your PM box is full, hit me up with the pic.

3 weeks is fast and the fact that she got up from labor ready to go seems odd to me. After I have my babies, call it quits because I am maxing and relaxing. When her uterus falls out because she is doing too much, that is when she will learn. That New Parent Mentor does not sound like she is doing her job.

Lmao@uterus falling out...

Brandy, Sonja, and the PM are just "too big for that"

Brandy all out there all OPEN and stuh...ewwwwwwwww.

Now see, the grandmoms from back in the day would have said, YOU nor that baby are going anywhere! I guess it's the NEW GENERATION. I prefer the "old school" myself.

4 real, 6 weeks bed rest. I know I will use all of my 6 weeks and I want to (don't laugh) get all my due dates in May so I can have my paid maternity leave + summer vacation to be with my baby.

FYI -- I am not prego. Before I get a PM, LMAO.

When her twat catches something, she will sit her azz down somewhere.

AKA2D '91 06-25-2002 12:18 PM

I meant "not" in that other post.

I do not think peeps do the 6 weeks thing anymore. One could not take a baby out until it had had its 6 weeks check-up. But now, those chillin have those babies out with NOTHING on or over them to protect them from germs AS SOON as they come home from the hospital. They sashay around with the newborns like they are toddlers.

That just makes me ill.

Stars who won't grow old together

By Tanya Barrientos

So it's splitsville between Jennifer Lopez and her backup boy, Cris Judd, after eight short months of marriage.

Is anyone really surprised?

I'm no marriage counselor, but when your husband is on your payroll, the odds against a perfect union are pretty high.

Not to mention the fact that this particular coupling was the ultimate rebound romance. Remember that J. Lo and P. Diddy Puffy Sean Jean Combs broke up only weeks before the Latina actress-singer-dancer-restaurateur-presidential adviser (just kidding about the last one) hooked up with Judd. The diva met the dancer in January of last year, was engaged by the summer, and walked down the aisle in September.

Of course, this isn't the first time Lopez has suffered from a wedding hangover. Her first marriage, in 1997 to Ojani Noa (also a dancer - hey, Jennifer, step away from the chorus line!), lasted less than a year.

I've heard of starter marriages, but it looks as if the Hollywood set has moved beyond those to whiplash weddings, designed more to garner publicity than a lifetime of love.

Consider this not-at-all-exhaustive list of celebrities who have had one, and sometimes two, blink-and-you'll-miss-them unions:

Drew Barrymore and bar owner Jeremy Thomas said "I do" after a six-week romance and split up 19 days later.

Drew Barrymore and Tom Green played annoying comedian and wife for less than six months before calling it quits.

Carmen Electra and Dennis Rodman lasted a whopping 10 days.

Shannen Doherty and Ashley Hamilton, married seven months.

Ashley Hamilton and Angie Everhart, legally hitched for 55 days.

Courtney Thorne-Smith was the jinxed cover girl of the spring 2001 issue of InStyle Weddings magazine. Her marriage to genetic scientist Andrew Conrad didn't last even until the ink was dry. The magazine, with a smiling picture of the blushing bride, hit newsstands weeks after the couple separated. They made it to seven months.

Kelly Rutherford, who starred in Melrose Place, also was subject to the InStyle curse. She married Venezuelan banker Carlos Tarajano last June, invited the magazine to cover the lavish Beverly Hills nuptials, then filed for divorce in January, a month before the issue came out. (If you ask me, it's the editors who should be blushing, not the brides!)

Julia Roberts overcame her altar aversion long enough to do the deed with singer-songwriter Lyle Lovett in 1993, but the vows didn't take. They were married for less than two years.

Helen Hunt and Hank Azaria dated successfully for six years, then put the kibosh on their love affair when they made it legal in 1999. The marriage lasted 17 months.

Actress Robin Givens and tennis instructor Svetozar Marinkovic, who scored "love all" in 1997, got married and separated the same day (Aug. 22). The divorce was official a few months later. That one was considerably shorter than Givens' short (16-month) and infamous union with Mike Tyson, which ended in 1989.

Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley did a less-than-convincing 1994 televised kiss that foreshadowed their split. Their baffling union lasted 20 surreal months.

And back in 1970 (lest you think this is only a post-boomer phenomenon), actor Dennis Hopper married Michelle Phillips (the Mamas and the Papas, and later Knots Landing) on Halloween. The candy was dandy, but when the sugar rush lifted eight days later, the couple dashed to divorce court to call it quits.

Hey, I know marriage is hard work. Half of the marriages in America fail, and that's just among us "little people." I'm sure being rich and famous and having to deal with mansions and servants and galas and premieres doesn't help (although my husband and I would be willing to try).

Here's my advice for newlyweds Paul McCartney and Heather Mills, whose ceremony at an Irish castle made international headlines: The marriage is the thing. The rest is just showbiz.
