Major-- Family and Child Studies with an emphasis in Child Development
Minor-- Could be Sociology if I decide whether or not I'm going to register for Social Inquiry. My major requires the students to do a certain amount of volunteer work within the field so I've done work in Child Life wards in Hospitals. I was a Community Advisor otherwise known as an R.A. this past school year. CT4, I also worked for Upward Bound as a Tutor/Counselor for 2 years. I'll get more experience because I have to complete an Internship as part of my curriculum before I graduate. I appreciate the experience that I'll get but I'm not looking forward to working 8 hrs a day without any pay. I have no idea what I really want to do so I'm entering grad school upon receiving my degree. |
Major: Computer Information Systems (CIS)
Classification: 5th Year Student Internships: 3 summers at 3M and now I work as a full time employee at a great corporation in the Twin Cities. I'm definitely growing in my major. I'm pretty open as to what I want to do in the future. I know that I want a Masters degree, I just don't know what I want to get it in. We shall see... |
Hello Sorors and Friends:
Major: Business Administration Specialization: Mathematics (wanted to make use of ALL that math I took from engineering :)) Changed major from Electrical & Computer Engineering because I was working two jobs (had to support myself and no money), stress, and attending a HUGE university with "weak" support for minorities, as well as lost interest towards the end, etc.) Targeting more Information Technology and received my first computer certification March 8, 2002: Certified Internet Webmaster Associate. I will be taking the next two exams for my Professional and Master Designer certifications soon. I plan on pursuing more "computer" certifications and get into Networking as well. I have created my own web design and hosting company and working on the web site as we speak. :) I have been working at my university as Web Designer/Programmer and Division of Housing Help Desk Coordinator for the campus network. Lost my job soon after Sept. 11th. :( I graduate this August and hope to find a job soon. If anyone knows of any IT opportunities, please let me know :p |
Major: Comp. Info. Systems
Minor: English |
Re: INROADS
A case in point:
A soror who is my sands and who happens to have the same degree was an INROADS intern in college with our company. She is now a Director, two levels above me. She did an internship, I didn't. She is a great person and is working with me to get to the next level. She also has not forgotten what helped her so she serves on the board of the local INROADS chapter. It works, people! Quote:

Major: Internarional Relations
Minor: Portuguese I will be going to Brazil this July to study abroad. In the fall I will be a junior. I hope to get an internship at the federal building because I want to work for the govt. Ronnie :D |
Major: Biology
Minors: Chemistry and Mathematics Internships: 1. Summer 2001 I worked on developing an assay for the detection of micro-metastatic breast cancer at an early stage of disease course. 2. Summer 2002 I'm currently working on developing HIV DNA vaccine. Career goal: It's sad, but I don't know what I want to do with my life. I know I don't want to go to Med School, but what field am I going to get into for Grad school? At one point (about 2 years ago) I was thinking bio-engineering but now I don't know. Maybe this summer experience may help. Advice from anyone in the science field or contacts for this graduating senior (May 2003) is wholeheartedly welcome :) |
My major was Speech-Language Pathology and I am currently interviewing with several school districts for a position as a speech therapist. I had to complete 3 semester long clinical practicums in educational settings and I think that they have more than prepared me for a career as a school-based therapist.
However, since I am very interested in the medical side of speech pathology, I will be returning to school in the fall to pursue a Master's degree in SLP. |
Hey Everyone:
Major: Graphic Design (Senior) Former Major : Architecture for 2 1/2 years (it was stressing me out) Minor: Architecture (at least all those credits didn't go to waste) Currently I'm interning with the YMCA as a Marketing & Development intern where I design everything from postcards to newspaper ads to brochures for corporate membership recruitment. I plan to go to Grad school to get my MBA with an emphasis in Marketing & E-Commerce, in the fall of '03. (if anyone has any suggestions of very good grad schools where you don't need any post-undergraduate experience please PM me, thanks!!! I'm trying to go straight through to get my MBA) In the long run, I plan to have clothing boutiques that will feature the clothing of up-and-coming designers. |
Re: College Majors/Minors
Questions:
What is/was your college major(s)? Chemistry What is/was your college minor(s)? Biology I went back to college 2 years later and got my certification for 2nd. education. FOR THE GRADUATES/WORKING FOLKS: What are you doing now professionally? After teaching public school for six years, I decided to open my own child care center so that I can spend more time with my daughter. Being a public school teacher left me little time to spend with my precious one. How did your major(s)/minor(s) prepare you to do your job? I was well prepared when I was teaching, but I rarely used my degree now. I will be pursuing a Masters(B-K education) in the fall. What internships did you do to get ready for your profession? During my sophomore and junior years of college, I had an internship at Arthur D. Little, Inc.(pharmaceutical division) in Cambridge,MA. At the time of my internships, I thought I wanted to go to pharmacy school, but later on decided against it. My internship gave me a lot of experience as far as being a research scientist. Like Candygirl, and CT4 I also worked for Upward Bound as a tutor/counselor, as well as after I graduated and became one of the summer instructors. |
I have a BA in Political Science
I am currently the Marketing Communications Manager for a non profit in Virginia. This fall I will be going to Bowie State University to obtain my MBA with a concentration in Marketing. My long term goal is to run my own Consulting firm. |
BA in Economics
Minor: Management & Organizations I didn't do any internships when I was in school, and it did not impact my ability to get good job offers after college, but I think that in today's climate it is critical to have them. I work as a internal Performance Consultant and Trainer. I do training on things like leaderhip, team building, communication skills etc. and consult with departments in my company to help them meet their performance goals. My recommendations include both training and non-training interventions. I don't think my degree has helped me an awful lot in my professional career, as a matter of fact, if I had to do it all over again I would NOT major in Econ. Hated it!! :p :D |
This is my first post, so here I go...
My final major :) in college was Business Management (1st: Computer Science 2nd: Finance) Hampton didn't have minors when I was there, but I can pretty much say it was Spanish. I am currently working as an Academic Program Specialist (which does many functions a Registrar does, but not the money). So to nip that in the bud I am also working on getting my Master's in Info Tech with an emphasis in Database Management. I like what I do but I want the professional part (Registrar or Institutional Research) not the support staff end. So for now it pays the bills, keeps food in my baby's tummy and also pays for school, so I can't complain. As far as internships there were many opps at HU but unfortunately I had to get a decent paying job to pay the bills. It would have been great though to get an internship, get real world experience and build networks. |
Major/Future Plans
My major is Biology and I currently work as a Pharmacy Technician. I plan on going to Pharmacy school next year (Fall '03) and get my Pharmacy doctorate.

The dang deal....
major: Biological Systems Engineering
track: bioprocess Lemme explain, as an engineer there are many things that one can do with a degree. Specifically, as a bioengineer the field is very diverse, to help students narrow their course sequence TAMU offers three bioengineer tracks: bioprocess, food engineering, and environmental/water. As a bioengineer/bioprocess track I am being prepared to take a job in a major biotech corporation. For instance, I can work either for the government of major produce firm genetically engineeirng bionic pesticides, growth hormones etc...or I could work for the CIA making/decoding biological weapons. If anyone has seen the "why biotech commercial" in which they discuss engineering "golden corn", i.e. corn infused with beta caratene, to send to sub-Saharan African to combat blindness that is my major! I could also work in pharmaceuticals. In fact, I interned last summer with Schering pharmaceuticals...read Claritin and Nasonex. Anyway, I have bigger dreams and only chose an engineering major because I love math and science and that was where the scholarships were and in my house grad/professional school is not an option....So, I am taking the LSAT in October and hopefully will be enrolling in law school in the fall of 2003. I want to get a JD/MPH and eventually affect public policy in health care. Whew! Soror Sweetest Diva, we should talk about law school inTX, etc... |
Re: College Majors/Minors
What is/was your college major(s)?
Sport Medicine and Fitness Education (finished-premed already) What is/was your college minor(s)? Spanish and Psychology FOR THE GRADUATES/WORKING FOLKS: What are you doing now professionally? with my premed I was an EMT for a bit, but constant late night calls and early morning school wasn't getting it so now I'm doing everyday work. How did your major(s)/minor(s) prepare you to do your job? Highly because I would be in some deep do-do if it didn't, don't even think about malpractice. What internships did you do to get ready for your profession? Athletic training, hospital clinicals, community service, american league pro sports, shadowing, etc FOR THE CURRENT STUDENTS What do you plan to do with your major? Start my own practice What internships have you pursued to better prepare yourself for the working world? other than those mentioned above I will be working with (well I won't say which team yet) but I do have ends with two professional football teams and one arena football team as well as a chance to be a pro choreographer in cali. In addition to all this I also want to some day be a wife (coming soon as I finish school, if we can hold off that long) and a mommy (in about 5 years-gotta get the funds and career right) and way down the line a grandma. |
Major: Health Care Management
Minor: Business Administration Currently I am working at a hospital as a Financial Analyst/ Special Projects Coordinatior. My major was really a good balance between health and business courses, which is really helpful. I am currently in graduate school to get my masters degree in Health Administration. I am not sure what I want to do in the long run since the health care arena is so broad (ie. insurance, non-profit, private practices, etc.). I also did two interships during my junior and senior year, which I found to be valuable experience. Of course the semester after I graduated they started a new intership program for my major where you work 32 to 40 hours a week (you can also be paid, not much of course) for an entire semester and earn 12 credits. I wish they had started that program sooner. |
COLLEGE: CLEVELAND STATE UNIVERSITY

I'm currently working in the Twin cities for another contracted food servcie company as a management level intern. Well thats my plan and I'm stickin' to it!!!!!:) :) :) :) :) |

Comp. Sci
What is/was your college major(s)
My college major was Computer Science. What is/was your college minor(s)? I could have had a minor in Math, but I was lazy and didn't take that one last math class that I needed. What are you doing now professionally? Currently I am a programmer/analyst at UBS|PaineWebber in New Jersey (I am blessed to have a job, but I can't stand this place, hence the highlighting of PAINE). I am also trying to start my own web & graphic desgin business. How did your major(s)/minor(s) prepare you to do your job? Studying the concepts of object oriented programming, database management, and learning various programming languages in college gave me the skills to easily learn and work with the languages I use at work today. In my first two months I was able to pick up perl scripting. I don't use the languages I learned in school at work but I try to keep my skills up by doing things on my own at home. What internships did you do to get ready for your profession? To get a job in the computer industry I took various internships in order to figure out what it was that I liked to do and what I didn't like to do. I worked in the college computer lab as an tech, got promoted to a help desk associate where I interacted with more faculty than students (proved to be a great benefit when trying to register and get transcripts quickly!! :) ). As a lab tech I got to instruct and assist in continuing ed classes for basic computer skills. I also interned at a start-up web site (that was the greatest!) where I learned a lot about web site development. Future Plans: Start grad school in Septemer 2002, pursing a Master's in Comp. Sci. in hopes of becoming a college professor. |
Major: Chemistry
Minor: Math Occupation: I am an analyst in an environmental lab so I'm definetely working in my major. Now that I have graduated I know exactly what I want to do and don't want to do. |
I am a Junior:
Major: Applied Economics Minors: Communicaton Studies and African-American Studies |
Political Science Majors
I am currently a senior in majoring in political science. I would like to know if anyone is a political science major, if so what are or were you career plans, did you do any internships (if so where)? Did you do volunteer work? etc.
I have been doing a lot of research on careers in political science and I am unsure what I really want to do besides administrative work or something within governmental relations. I like to be creative, a great organizer for events, great interpersonal skills, likes to help others. I would really like to help homeless people, teen moms, unwed single mothers, children w/no health care or something dealing with human services. My undergrad advisor for the political science department is so wacky, I am not even sure if he could help me. I have been in the process of going to different workshops held at my school that would be of great help in helping me choose, finding a mentor, and volunteering with various organizations. I am not trying to pry in anyones business, I just would like to know since mostly everyone attends or has obtained a degree from a institution of higher education. |

I had to represent the student body a dinners, set up events and do contract work. But a lot of employers are looking past this.. because it was not an official internship. Iam currently working as a cashier at a electronics store. Even thought this is not what I want to do with my degree I still use it. I work at customer service a lot. And spanish is nice because I can surprise people and I know what they are saying :p |
