well...

i think it depends on your league and the area. b'more league dues were $150. with menu responsibilities you can pay well over that--im thinking $500 or more. dc dues are i think $250 (firecracker can correct me as im a transfer).

it can be a lot especially if you have a family so be mindful of that when you are deciding. im sure the ladies here who are in sororities can provide you with more clear cut information :) .

Our dues...

our dues are $120.00 per year. There is a fundraising auction dinner which is $40-50/plate and the annual May luncheon or dinner runs around $50.00. When I was a provisional we didn't pay dues until we became actives if I remember correctly.

futurestar1 08-22-2006 11:57 PM

Dues

$175 dues plus Ways and Means credits can be gained through ticket purchases or thrift shop purchases

I've been in lurker status for a minute! Now I'm coming out. I recently became a provisional for JLLA also. I joined so that I could meet some like minded women and jump in and do some work! Maybe I'll see you at the retreat on the 9th. Are you planning to go to the Starlight Arcade event?

mulattogyrl 08-25-2006 10:49 AM

This is really interesting. They do a lot of work in my area as well. I'm going to look into it.

I didn't see this before I replied. Check your PM.

I am very interested in pursuing membership as well (Atlanta.) I worked with a school that was associated with the Atlanta chapter, and have heard nothing but positive things about them. :)

The deadline for the next provisional class is October 15.
You can apply online at http://www.jlatlanta.org/ or send in a paper application.

I need to go ahead and decide if I will apply for this class or wait!

I thought you had to be sponsored by a current member. That's one of the reasons I've been holding off.

Different chapters have different requirements regarding sponsorship.

While I'm not absolutely positive, I believe Atlanta is one of the chapters that requires a sponsor but will find one among their active members for you if you do not already have one. You might want to check their website or give them a call to find out for sure.

gamma_girl52 09-22-2006 09:15 AM

iamcurious is right. If you don't know someone in the League personally, they will match you with someone. That was one reason why I was holding off as well.

unspokenone25 09-26-2006 11:12 AM

I am considering joining the League here where I work (moved for my job). It seems like a lot of work, especially as a provisional so I'll keep everyone posted on what I decide to do. I have so much to do for the sorority and work that I don't know if I should give it a try.

Thanks! I submitted my app, and am just waiting for a yay or nay. :)

Glad to see everyone off to a fun JL year

This is my 3rd active year. I'm placed at a local women's shelter where I'll be teaching life skills classes to homeless women.

What is everyone else doing for your JL?

futurestar1 10-06-2006 04:54 PM

What are you doing with your League?

For my first year as an active, I am working with two local elementary schools. We take the girls to cultural events like the ballet, plays, mural tours, etc. Things they may not otherwise be exposed to.

Is your League offering the League Presidential Service Award?

darling1 10-07-2006 11:34 AM

ummmmm....

im on the tansfer committee:D

Have you heard anything yet?

Still BLUTANG 05-03-2007 09:55 AM

Still BLUTANG 07-10-2007 02:55 PM

I say it definitely depends on your city. But I recall that at most orientations last year women had on twin sets and pearls (older) and cute spring/summer dresses (the younger ladies). Hope this helps! If you decide to join let us know how it goes. I soooo enjoyed my provisional year!

darling1 07-11-2007 06:06 PM

good luck!!

i wore a twinset and black pants when i attended mine. if you plan to be outside, eyesontheprize had a great suggestion of a summer dress. i would bring a sweater just in case. ive seen women in slacks and a nicetop.

have a great time!!!

futurestar1 07-12-2007 08:35 AM

Depends on the time of day

Ours are usually after work so most people are dressed in business casual attire.

My friend has joined the Junior League of Columbus! I had no idea she was interested -- I'm so proud of her. She's also a fourth year med student, so we'll see how that works out.

I am going into my Provisional year with the Junior League of Baltimore, Inc.!

Blacksocialite 08-15-2008 04:07 PM

Kudos to you!

I am absolutely thrilled to read that so many of you are joining the Junior League!

I joined in 1998 and have to say, that although it can be challenging at times, it is a great learning experience.

darling1 08-15-2008 10:40 PM

Congrats!!!!

i started out in that league. enjoy your provisional year :).

I am finally now an active member of the Junior League of Charlotte..I enjoyed my provisonal year so much! And yes it did kick my a** especially since I have 3 year old twins but it can be done if you really want it! BTW, our past president was African American as well..JLC is very diverse:)

teena 08-23-2008 10:50 PM

Cool. I am looking into the local chapter here. Sounds like good stuff!

IvyInflection 08-24-2008 09:28 AM

I have been a member of the Junior League of Montclair Newark for about three years. My provisional group did a Rape Awareness day for senior girls leaving for college. I still stay in touch with many of my provisional line members on a personal level. They are truly a group of dynamic women of many cultures.

Our group does quite a bit of community outreach services, and I have been pleased with both my experience, and with the networking/learning and leadership modules that they provide.
