During rush week, I SLEPT :o , bought stuff to decorate my room, and met my new neighbors! (I lived in Broward Hall for my first 2 years.) Why risk a late night out when you're already stressed about rush? |
The whole tent-talk thing is a good point. As a sophomore you're bound to know more about reputations... and girls will ask you! Please don't tell them. I made the mistake of telling the girls some reputations, but it's not good for the whole rush process. Just go where your heart leads you, as cheesy as it sounds!
|
hey girls, I am so excited to hear about your rush stories to come!! I was just wondering, how does rush at UF work? You said you are there a week early, do you move into your dorms early or live in a rush dorm or what? And do you then move into the houses or?? I am so jealous, I was looking at some of the web-sites down there and the houses are huge and beautiful!! Anyway, keep us updated!! We are all as eager as you are.;)

Dorms open Sunday the 18th....and at 4pm is the mandatory orientation session. Then bid day is the following Sunday, the 25th, and classes start Monday the 26th. So I'm excited that classes start after the whole rush week, because last year they started like mid-way through...and I remember hearing some of the people in my dorm complaining. I'm looking forward to keeping everyone updated....and also bombarding them with questions!!! :) |
Another UF question
Also.....for UF, the schedule says for Sat.Aug.25--9:20pm, Ranking Session. Can someone explain what that is? Is that done in front of all the girls??
Last year I remember seeing sorority girls going to my dorm hanging up signs with their letters on the doors of girls who had rushed. What exactly was that? (i'm sorry if it sounds vague) Thanks |
Ranking sessions are when you meet with your group and you get a scantron and decide out of whom you've been invited back to where you're going to go. It's done after every round. You all just sit quietly while you fill them out, and that's it. It's not made public who you chose.
The way it works is that when you get to the room you are given a list of who invited you back for the next round and if you have more invites than the number of parties you have to cut. If you have just enough or less than the number of parties you go to them all. Then the next day when it's time for the new round your Pi Chi gives you your schedule which shows who you chose and who chose you. The door decorations you see are put up for girls after Bid Day to welcome them to the sorority. Alpha Chi has lyres, Theta has twin stars, Pi Phi has a heart with angel wings, etc. I didn't get mine last year and thought it was because I had an apartment, but my big swears she put it up. I guess it was some mean-spirited person who saw it and tore it down since my apt. was on the first floor and visible from the parking lot. :( So this year I'm going to make one for myself to make up for it. :D |
Thanks ROWDYsister
For preferentials, it says that the ranking session is at 9:20p...and the following day the "New member induction ceremony" is at 5p.....And when, in between that time, do you find out who you've gotten a bid from? (b.c then it says 6p "Bid Day" and "Pick up Invitations"...what exactly are all those events?
Also...on the UF Panhellenic page (www.ufpanhellenic.com), it says that Round 3 is 'video round'....what's that? ahhh....I know i'm asking a zillion silly questions, but I guess it's just my way of trying to calm down my nerves since it's only a few weeks away! :) wow....I keep looking at the schedule...and in the first two days we attend 19 parties  ....I hope I won't get overwhelmed meeting so many people in such a short time! |
basically what happens on bid day is you will all meet your pi chis at norman field, where you recieve your bid card, but won't be able to open it. your pichis will tell you when you can open it. All the girls open their bid cards together and then madness ensues! it's absoluetly insane. Girls running everywhere, screaming.....
Fun stuff. Oh and video round is where you go back to the 6 (maybe 7, i forget) houses of your choice, and you watch a little video that they prepare for you about their sisterhood. Ours is gonna be killer! :) Other schools call it "skit night" and usually act out the skits themselves. |
Yup, SKchickie's right.
The New Member Induction Ceremony is a ceremony in the University Auditorium for all the girls. At that point you don't know which house you've been invited to, but just the fact that you're present means that you've been invited somewhere (b/c girls who do not receive bids get phone calls that morning). That's also the time when the Pi Chis reveal their affiliations. The first round is super long, but in reality there aren't 19 parties. You'll go to 15 parties and have four lounges. During the lounges you just sit around in a lecture hall in Norman and hang out. So it'll be a nice break. ps: the video round is awesome. All the videos brought me to tears...and they weren't even MY sisters! :) |
oohh....hearing about all these things gets me even MORE exciting about rushing!! (thanks!) Now...about Bid Day....by that time, if you didn't get your first choice, but your second choice....can you decline it if you like?
or would you have to employ the suicide bid--bsaically saying that it's "either this sorority or not sorority"? Now if you didn't get a bid, you get a phonecall...so I'm guessing that there aren't many girls who don't get bids, b/c if not that would be too many phonecalls! The thing on Norman Field....is that when the girls have to wake up super early in the morning? I remember hearing something about that last year. aahhh....I'm so excited now!! ROWDYsister and SKchickie...it's all your fault! hehe :p Now...are there 'local' sororities at UF? How do they recruit? |

The early morning thing was one of the preliminary preferences where we recieved our invitations back to the houses for the next round; last year, it was at 6:30 in the morning. I rolled out of bed and went to the Florida gym in my pyjamas; the pi chis (rho chis then) were in their pj's too. This year, your earliest prelim pref (according to my info sheet) is 8:30; you guys lucked out! The thing on Norman doesn't start until 6pm on bid day. First, the pi chis tell which houses they're in. They drag it out as long as they can!
|
name change?
why did they change from being ro chis to pi chis? I've been wondering why the names were different, and I thought maybe I was just reading it wrong!
|
Rho chi is the name of an honorary pharmacy fraternity that was established some years after Panhellenic chose Rho Chi to represent our rho chis. However, this pharmacy frat got mad and demanded that Panhel change their name to something else. I don't really think Panhel should have agreed to do it, but they did it, they're Pi Chis, there we have it. We had Rho Chi first! Oh, well, if Panhel had wanted my opinion on it I assume they would have asked me before they did it. :p
|
oohh....
oh...that's so retarded! But kinda ironic cuz just a little while ago I was browsing through all the UF organizations that have websites through UF...and I saw the Rho Chi one. I thought that it was weird that they both have that name!
|
We need more greek letters! Either that, or we need to start using 4 letters. Although, I'm hesitant to recommend anything that's being done by Sigma (stole our nickname) AEPi on 'Sorority Life'.
Edited to add: I don't think anyone else explained the door decks; the sorority puts them up on the new members' doors while all the new members are at bid day at the sorority house. When you get back to your dorm (apartment, house, etc.) it should be hanging on the door. I think ours are the coolest 'cause they're wooden, not paper, and in the year I've had mine I haven't managed to do any damage to it. :D |
What is COB? And does UF go through Spring Rush? I've never really heard about it...so maybe it's very informal. What happens during Spring Rush?
|
Well, Rho Chi society was founded in 1922... I am not sure when NPC started using the term Rho Chi for Recruitment Counselors.
Doesn't matter who used Rho Chi first... the society is the one that got it trademarked and copyrighted and all that good stuff... so legally Panhellenic had to change it... |
love reading your posts!!!
So here I sit, on my 35th birthday, reading your posts about UF rush... I can sense the excitement, the physical "rush" of it all that I first experienced 17 years ago... (ooh, to think you guys were like 2-3 yrs old when I sat in Norman Hall myself!;)
It's interesting to read about the UF traditions that still happen & how they've changed... the door decorations, the running from Normal Hall to Sorority Row (hmm...I don't remember it being so "dramatic" as it's been reported..) We didn't have a "new member initiation" I don't think, but the girls who did not receive a bid were contacted. As for my own Bid Day - oh, I was so nervous....even though I was a legacy @ KD. When I went up to get my card, one of my Rho Chi's handed it to me, & whispered in my ear "We're gonna be sisters!" Wahoo! Curlygirly, you're doing the right thing by asking questions, but BOY, do YOU have an advantage knowing all this stuff ahead of time! |
Curlygirly~
I sent you a PM. :D ~Dale |

It's great that you're blaming us for getting you psyched instead of scaring you. If we were scaring you, I'd have to stop posting til after recruitment was over. Spring rush isn't really rush in the traditional sense. We now have Panhellenic Preview, which is when all the sororities showcase themselves...I think it's either all together at the same place, or they invite girls to check out the houses? I don't know how it works, but it's sort of like a "Hey, check us out and think about us when fall rolls around." But the thing is, I think only two houses actually offer bids in the spring. But then they have spring pledge classes and spring initiation, so in that sense it's like fall. But not every one does it...so don't pin your hopes on that. There's a better chance you'll get into a house you click with if you give it your all in the fall. |
I forgot to mention: All UF sororities are national Panhellenic sororities, Curlygirly.
Before GC I didn't even know local organizations existed. :o And all the fraternities are members of IFC, too. |
Panhellenic Preview
I remember seeing ads for the Panhellenic Preview....I also saw some of the girls wearing the shirts (which were super adorable by the way!) My roommate and I had planned on attending, but I remember that night there was a fire drill in Beaty (my dorm) that lasted like an hour, and I hadn't finished my paper (due the next day...as usual!) But anyway, we figured that we were going to rush in the fall anyway......
Was that where they "Recruited" girls for spring? Either way, I just remember the event because of the adorable shirts!!! :D |
Go UF Panhellenic!
Hey ladies! I am so excited that so many of you are going to go through recruitment in a couple of weeks!! I am super excited myself because this will be the first time that I'll be a rusher and not a rushee!!
I'm also super excited about work week all next week. As the name says, it will be a lot of work, but I'm sure I'll love it 'cause I love rush! For all PNM's: UF Recruitment is really exhausting, physically and emotionally. Just make sure to keep an open mind, get lots of sleep, and stay hydrated! When they offer you water at the houses, take it! Not only will it keep you from losing your voice the next day, it will also give you something to do with your hands if you're kinda nervous!! Toodles |
Wow! Less than fourteen days left until the opening of UF Recruitment! The more I sit here and read your replies, the more excited I get! As I've mentioned in another post I'm on Recruitment Exec this year and while I've experienced recruitment as both a potential member and as a chapter member I'm more excited than ever to actually be a part of making recruitment happen and being a Pi Chi! I wanted to shed a little bit of light on the whole switch from Rho Chi to Pi Chi...
Recruitment Exec was approached this year by our dean who informed us that we were one of a growing minority of schools that had not changed our name from Rho Chi's to Pi Chi's. The name Rho Chi was never even official and had simply become a shortcut for saying "Recruitment Counselors." It wasn't until we started actually printing Rho Chi all over shirts and bags that the actual Rho Chi fraternity national headquarters wrote to National Panhellenic and asked colleges to change the name. So we, as UF Panhellenic, really had no choice in the matter and it was either this year or next that the change would come. Just as a side note...some of the other names that we considered were Rho Gams(Recruitment Guides- this is the one that FSU uses I believe)and Pi Rho Chis(Panhellenic Recruitment Counselors). In the end, we just thought that Pi Chis was the shortest and sweetest! |
Just wanted to wish all of you good luck...especially to my favorite sorority...
And to all the PMNs I can't wait to watch you all run across Norman Field... GO GATORS! |
Maybe all of the UF girls on this board can help me out. I have always heard and have read in past threads that UF usually has about 1200 girls that rush, based on the Recruitment website there are only around 950 registered is that the normal amount who rush. I was thinking if there are less girls rushing that the cuts that were described in last year's forum wouldnt be so severe, is this true or am I not looking at this right? Starting to get really nervous!!!!!!
|
I was looking at the schedule on the UF recruitment website. I guess I am just retarded what is preliminary preference in the mornings of the second and third parties?
|
UF56, I heard that the number of PNMs registered this year is about the same as last year. I really don't know how many went through last year, though. Not sure about how the cutting works and what the numbers are, honestly. But don't think about it too much. Not being offered any bids is not a huge occurence.
Angelic, preliminary preferences are when the Pi Chis give the PNMs the list of who has let them go onto the next round, and then the PNMs pick which houses to go to later that day. Like if you have 12 houses on your list but there are only 10 parties you have to cut two. If you have 10 you go to all 10. If you have less than 10 you go to all of them. |
Thanks rowdy I figured it had to do something with invitations. :)
