I was 'born and raised' in northeast Ohio. I came to Columbus for college. One summer I lived in Ann Arbor, MI (which is love). I've been in Columbus ever since.

There are tons of things to do, like DeltAlum mentioned. In Columbus, however, there's not much to do if you're just getting together with some friends on the spur-of-the-moment.

You can:
#1Go the trendy new mall (which last year was Easton, this year is Polaris, and I don't know what is in the works for next year).. this must be the freakin' mall capital of the world:
  • Polaris
  • Easton
  • Northland
  • Eastland
  • Westland
  • Tuttle
  • Lane Avenue
  • The Continent (actually, this used to be really cool, but everyone has pretty much pulled out of it :( )
Not to mention all of the strip malls & junk.

#2 Go out to eat at one of many, many chain restaurants (although some of the trendier ones are all owned by the same local guy)... usually located near or in the malls

#3 Go out to one of the new "Districts". (A couple years ago the Nationwide Insurance Company built a giant arena downtown, and that area quickly became knows as the "Arena District". Almost immediately signs sprouted up everywhere naming things like the "Brewery District", "Arts District", etc.) When you get to the district of your choice you can shop and/or eat. Or, if you planned ahead, you might actually see a game or go to a really fun arts event.

#4Clubbing/Bars: Once upon a time, there were some divier clubs on the OSU campus, where the 18+up crowd gathered. So there were some great clubs around town. Then this lovely organization called "Campus Partners" decided to buy them out, along with tons of local shop owners, to replace them with chain stores, etc. Nothing has replaced these bars, so the the students have invaded what once were the 'better' bars (or they just have giant house parties that turn into riots  ).
There are a few good local ones, but you have to ask around to find them

Do you see a trend in the immediately-available activities in Columbus? No wonder it was named as one of the fattest cities in America.

Anyway, sorry about the Columbus rant. There are some really fun things, like the Gallery Hop that happens every 1st Sat. of the month. Most of the galleries and shops in the Short North area (now named the Arts District, but everyone still calls it the Short North) stay open until at least 10p.m. and people wander them and buy things (<--- Columbus loves to shop).. great people watching!

Mansfield... there's really not much to do. My sister-in-law grew up in the Mansfield/Ashland area and lives there now. Make Columbus look like NYC. :D

Is "Trilogy" still open in Cleveland? (at the Flats)

Trilogy has closed. It has been replaced by Metropolis. it operates in the same way that triliogy has.

No, the wharehouse district is definitely growing. It has a more sophisticated (expensive) reputation though. It attracts less young college students and high schoolers. But it is working to replace the flats.
She's right. I have been to a couple of bars in the warehouse district. right now, two of my favorite spots there are the velvet dog and the mercury lounge. both of them are cool.:D

Ohio

AOX81 - I don't really know any Lambda Chi's but I know they're sellin their house for some reason - no clue why? Found out today while walkin to mud tug.
Silver Turtle - I totally agree about the Campus Partners and closing down the bars. It totally sux. I'm a freshman and I know half the bars that are here now are probably gonna be closed by time I turn 21.
I like Columbus but Silver Turtle is right. It's hard to do impromptu stuff. We mostly go to parties at the frats or we have planned sisterhoods. It's hard but I like it here.

Actaully I've driven through Ohio. Y'all can't be too bored up there.

It's much more cosmopolitan than Oklahoma is. Try living here and then talk to me about boring :D

What do you expect from a state who's name is a Native American word for "Red Dirt"?

As much as I complained about living in Ohio and the weather here, I miss it. It gets in your blood. That's why I might be transferring to OU next year! The weather might suck, but us Ohioans (sp?) know how to have fun!

SigmaChiCard 05-13-2002 01:34 PM

if it's a border state to Ky it has to suck, there is no alternative.

Round on teh ends and highh in teh middle!

Keep rolling out of there! Or if it out of there!

RubberSoul 05-30-2002 09:08 PM

Yeah, now what's with all the Ohio-bashing???? It totally depends on where in the state you are talking about. Like it or not, there are parts of EVERY (yes, I said EVERY, including California and Texas!!!!!!!!) state that suck. Um, Mansfield is not exactly an entertainment mecca-----that would be the problem right there. I have to admit I am not a big fan of Cincinnati......to those of us up here in NE Ohio, Cincy is just part of Kentucky. Columbus is really nice and has a lot to do, and Cleveland, like the song says, rocks!!!!! Anyone who says Cleveland is boring or has nothing hasn't been to the Cleveland I know. And anyone who says that Ohio is all farmland hasn't traveled from Cleveland down to Canton------there is nothing in between but highways, suburbs, cement and people.

DeltAlum 05-30-2002 11:02 PM

When I was growing up in Ohio, we who lived in Columbus called Cleveland "The mistake on the lake," and bemoaned our fate living in a big "cowtown."

In the ensuing years, Columbus has turned into a great city, and Cleveland is absolutely vibrant.

As for Oklahoma, our son is starting college there in the Fall -- he'll liven the place up.

Had to smile at memories of the buggy lot at Walmart just down the road from Mansfield.... and seeing lanterns floating down the street to the sound of horse hooves after dark....

You could always head out to Grandpa's Cheese Barn. ;)

If you're into the state park idea, there's Mohican. Just watch out for the snakes if you go to the livery.

Columbus, Ohio is where Delta Gee is headquartered (and come to think of it, so is Kappa Kappa Gee...their headquarters are in Columbus too).

So I think y'all should stop being meanies to Ohio! :p ;)

Cincy is sooo not a part of Kentucky. That's pretty funny. I spent 18 years of my life there and can say with confidence that I have no Kentucky qualities. More than anything you can say that Covington and Newport are a part of Cincy because they are not like typical Kentucky cities. It is all part of the "Greater Cincinnati" area. Cincinnati is a great place to be raised and has tons to do. You should spend more time down here or get to know some people from Cincy before you judge it. It's just like the people who judge Ohio. Sorry bout my lil' rant. I'm just tired of people alwayz dissin Cincy.
