Dianne,
Thank you for the info! ------------------ Brian Sejas The Miami Chapter of Delta Upsilon, Est. May 13, 1868. |
I know I heard that the SAE house at UK is the biggest in the state and maybe more, but that could be wrong. It takes up almost a whole city block and has a double wide staircase that leads down the the marble floor with a huge ceiling and large chandelier in it. That is all I have seen of it, but it was enough to take my breathe away.

i have no idea u may not be able to hold open parties anymore.

Before FIJI went dry nationally, I think they had parties at their house, which is on the historic register or whatever. I know they have a really nice house, but I don't know where there parties were for sure, if they closed off most of the house or whatever. I've never been to one of their parties. ------------------ Steve Corbin Lambda Chi Alpha Theta Kappa Chapter Rose-Hulman Inst. of Tech. |
I'm not in a house yet, but this fall I will be. At SDSU we don't have impressive, historic houses like other schools, but we are in the processes of getting a new fraternity row. Construction started this summer and is to be completed by the end of the next school year. The new fraternity row will have 8 of the 15 IFC fraternity houses that will line a brand new apartment complex for Greeks to live. If your wondering why the houses look small, that is because they are. The majority of the guys will live in the new apartments.

BrianDU,
Sorry for the late reply ... Too bad, we have problem here at Iowa State about registering historical landmark ... currently I would say about 10 buildings are REALLY historical here (including our house), and only one is registered as historical landmark (Iowa State Farmhouse Museum). Sad, but true. Now we have problem with one of the building here (Morrill Hall), some people want to put 9 million dollar to renovate it (it was built in 1850s), and some who don't care want to tear it down and build one spectacular modern building. For our house ... No, we don't have to go dry ... although we have to take a good care (really good care) for our house. We own our house, so it is property of Theta Delta Chi. As long as our house is not nationally registered, basically we can do anything we want to the structure. Disanvantage, of course, some people really picky about place they're gonna live for the next four years, so rush is sometime hard. The tendency is to go to other houses that brand new, with all sparkling new furnitures and fully equipped. Our maximum capacity is 52, but since it is hard to fit three people in one room, we're looking at 45. Meaning we cannot become big house (the rule says 50 in-house members). As far as all structure code, we don't have sprinkler system, for instance, and our fire escape is really traditional one. A lot of things are neat, though, for example, we still have the stove for central heating system. Also, we are looking for renovation in the near future - a really tough one. We had some visual architects stopped by to see our place, and they told us that we will have to restore a lot of things of the structure since our place is historical. As the result, we have to raise more money than before to renovate our place (restore is more expensive than replace!) Advantage, of course, we are proud that we're living in the oldest house for fraternal living at Iowa State. Some people stopped by at our place, and take pictures of our place ... we have plenty awesome furnitures (coffee table, dining room chairs and piano) and awesome details on the structure. For instance, in our computer lab, we have an unknown arch that looks really weird and creepy (yaiks! I am looking at it now!) As far as ghosts issue, I think it would be another good topic to discuss. |
Wow, I'm so jealous of everyone who has a house, especially a really nice one! Nobody officially has a house here http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif The sororities are all housed in a dorm. There are 4 floors, and each of the top 3 is split into 3 sections... each sorority has a section with the chapter room and everything. We can only house about 20 girls. The 1st floor is split up by rooms, where each sorority has a room on the 1st floor and whoever wants to live in it can. A picture of the dorm is at: http://web.lwc.edu/facility/housing.htm
It's the Stubbs Residence Hall (3rd one down, I think). |

UK, is that Kansas or Kentucky? The SAE House at Kansas is Fantastic! But it does not coever a block, it just looks lie it! Not sure of the cost but in MillS.
The SX house is also Big as well as some of the others but in different styles! SN House I beleive is the oldest and LXA moved into the old AOP House as they were taken off campus! Where AKL, LXA, AGD, TKE and 3 others were, the U is tearing down to build apartments. AGD is moving in to the DTD house as they were kicked off of campus. A whole lot of changes on the campus! ------------------ Tom Earp LX Z#1 Pittsburg State U. (Kansas) |
I thought I would share what the absolutely GORGEOUS Alpha Xi Delta, Chi Omega, and Tri Delta houses look like at University of Washington.

omg!! How many girls live in those houses?? They are massive and very beautiful!!!

Wow!!! I am so jealous of all you guys with those gorgeous houses. I unfortunately attend a school ina county where so-called brothel laws are still in effect http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif

For those interested, Univ of S Carolina has started building a Greek Village in downtown Columbia. USC has a HUGE greek system, so it's pretty exciting that they'll finally be getting houses. ZTA was the first to break ground on a house. Of course, Columbia is a very boring place to go to school. There's nothing to do there (that's my hometown), so once this Greek Village is done, I have the feeling that it's gonna be a madhouse! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

It will take a while to load but go to
http://phisigmasigma.freeyellow.com and click on HOUSE http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif Keep in mind: Clarion is a SMALL school. Total for sororities is 60 sisters! Our house is the nicest (In alot of opinions)... we dont have cooks, we eat on campus or cook ourselves... our house holds 18 women, with 2 singles. We have a nice sized chapter room and we're very proud of it! Oh yea, and were right off campus too!! the website is getting redone, but check it out! <3 Ali [This message has been edited by AngelPhiSig (edited July 03, 2001).] |

How did your chapters origianally come up with the money to finance your homes?
|
Here's the sorority house that I lived in!
I loved it. It fit 45 of us and was used during a war for injured soldiers. It's very old. http://www.emporia.edu/soa/greek/ssshome.html |
I loved the house when I was active, and it always seems they are adding something new or redecorating the inside. The link below shows a good chunk of the front of the house. The right section isn't shown though. The only thing that could make it better would be central air.

Some of these houses are absolutely magnificant. Now I know why your dues are so much higher than mine were.;)

All these houses are so beautiful! Well, here's mine, and there's a huge tree that blocks the view of most of the house, but I think that you can get the picture. It houses around 55 or so, and our dining room was recently remodeled and they took out our old (beloved!) black and white check floor and put in hard wood. Yes it looks nice, but for the members that remember the other one, that's what sold a lot of us on house tours! (It was like a soda fountain floor, and all the table and chairs are wrought iron with glass table tops.. it looked very elegant and classy with the old floor!) I'll also take a look around and see if I can find a picture of the spiral staricase.

You all definitely have some beautiful houses!! Some of my faves at the U. of Washington are:
http://students.washington.edu/panhell/AChiO.htm http://students.washington.edu/panhell/AGammaD.htm http://students.washington.edu/panhell/DeltaG.htm http://students.washington.edu/panhell/GammaP.htm http://students.washington.edu/panhell/KAlphaT.htm http://students.washington.edu/panhell/KappaD.htm http://students.washington.edu/panhell/PBetaP.htm Okay, so I should have just put all 16, I know! They're all beautiful. Someone else already posted the Chi O house on this thread, but I might add that it is the largest fraternity/sorority structure west of the Mississippi :) And to answer the other question, i'm not sure how many girls all of the sororities house..but I know that we at DG have about 85 in-house, and then the seniors have their own annex. |
Here's my house:
It's done in a spanish style with beautiful tiles outside and in. It also has a really good outside staircase and balcony to stand out on for our many pinnings. http://www.studentgroups.ucla.edu/pa...es/ddd/ddd.htm It's kind of a bad picture, but if you scroll all the down it shows pictures of girls in our house. Also, if you click on sororities on the left hand side of the page it takes you to the other houses at UCLA. |
All of these beautiful houses are making me jealous lol. At UNLV we don't have fraternity or sorority houses. The ones I've seen are awesome. I went to USC's ADPi house and didn't want to leave. I met a ton of awesome sisters and part of me was even thinking about transfering just so I could live in the house hehe. But its all good, greek life at UNLV is still pretty awesome.

great website Kris! You guys look like you have a lot of fun! :)

When I was an active, we shared a dorm with KKG, while the 3 other sororities on campus were on greek row with the 5 fraternities. The dorm was actually pretty nice -- it was split in half with different entrances, and we had a chapter room and a kitchen/TV room. This year, after being the oldest sorority on our campus and being without a house for 53 years, the chapter finally got their own house on greek row! I have to say, it is really, really amazing to have the actives in a house -- they are SOOOO excited. It has a gorgeous vaulted ceiling formal living room with huge windows, a library, a TV room, chapter room, and full kitchen/dining room. It houses 38, which is the biggest of all the houses, most are 33-35. Freshman have to live in the dorms, and most of the seniors live off campus. It was amazing to have formal rush in a house of our own -- gave me goosebumps!
As far as the Univ of Washington houses go, the Chi Omega house is really amazing, and beautiful inside as well. I have been in Pi Phi and Gamma Phi at UW too and they are gorgeous inside as well. Most of the UW sororities house around 100+ -- some hold more around 50-60 and then have an "annex" for the rest of the members, like Roxychlr was referring too -- it is a smaller building that is attached to the main house or behind it (in the case of Gamma Phi). The thing that is really neat about the Univ of Washington houses is that they are together within about an eight square block radius, not spread out like some greek systems. Most of the houses are these huge beautiful brick buildings. Worth checking out if you are ever in Seattle! |
Here's a kind of bad black and white photo of the chapter house I lived in at Indiana University:

IU Greek Houses
Jeff--
When did you graduate from IU? I graduated in 1997. The picture you posted does the Acacia house justice. I remember when I was a Senior in High School and we went to visit IU. Acacia was the first greek house I saw, and I remember telling my mom that I hoped it was a Sorority house (I had never heard of Acacia before) so that I could live in that house when I got to IU. It was a sad (and embarassing!) day when I learned that AKAK was a fraternity!!! But I grew to love the Kappa house anyway :p  -Kristen |
Graduated in '92, but have stayed in Bloomington - loved it so much I didn't want to leave, so began working at the IU Foundation full-time upon graduation.

OH MY GAWD, I hope you had road maps so that you could find your rooms!:D
Awesome, simply, Fu#*ing Awesome!:) |
Our house is very old but the inside is very beautiful. The school is going to be building a large new ZTA house for us. All the sisters are really excited about it. ZLAM
