well i've had some people call my fraternity Z pitchfork or Z candleabra, of course they did know the right name, they did it to mess with my head, it worked :)

Oh...13 Years Ago!

aopirose,

I didn't know it was so long ago. I thought it was recent!! Well you still handled it very nicely.

I am the first person in my famliy to belong to a GLO. When my parents came to visit me after I pledged Pi Phi and I took them over to the house, there was a sign on the door that said "Welcome to Pi Beta Phi" but with the greek letters rather than spelled out. My mom looked really confused and asked me (completely serious) "What is TBO"?

ZTAngel 02-28-2002 04:15 PM

I went to UF to visit a friend of mine and we went to this party. I was talking to a guy and mentioned I was a Zeta. About ten minutes after we had finished talking, this girl comes over to me and says, "You're a Theta?! So am I!" I explained to her that I was a Zeta. I had about 5 girls come up to me during a two minute period saying "Where are you a Theta at? I'm a Theta too." Turns out that the guy thought I had said Theta, not Zeta.

PinkRose1098 02-28-2002 04:52 PM

The thing I hate most is when I see my friends at home and they would see my letters and they would be like, "So your an Alpha Zeta Delta?" What the??????? And one of the guys who said this to me was pledging a fraternity at the time. Not exactly humourous to me.

We even had that type of thing in our formal "funny" sheet as part of a poem "NO, I did NOT say Theta".

RxyChrldr 02-28-2002 05:52 PM

No amusing stories like you all have, but people often think i've said "DZ" when I say "DG"....that's all :)

bruinaphi 03-01-2002 08:52 PM

My little sisters used to call Alpha Phi "Alpha Q." For some reason they got the fact htat the "A" stood for Alpha but thought the Phi was a Q.

kristiAZD 03-01-2002 09:44 PM

At my school, we are called Alpha Xi's or just Xi's. We haven't used the term "fuzzie" since the seventies, and everyone around here thinks it's dorky. No offense to my sisters who call themselves fuzzies, I just personally don't care much for the name. I have also had a few GCers think that I am from Alpha Zeta Delta, but I just politely correct them. No big deal.

Chi Omegas here are called Chi O's, Sigma Kappas are called Sig Kaps, Zeta Tau Alphas are called Zetas....etc. etc. Most of the fraternities here are pretty self explanitory, but Kappa Sigmas are called K-Sigs, and Delta Sigma Phi's are called Sigs.

FuzzieAlum 03-01-2002 09:55 PM

My chapter was totally split on the "fuzzy" thing. Some loved it, some hated it. I don't care either way, I just figured it would make a good nickname when I was signing up for this board.

We sometimes went by Alpha Xi, but that sounds a lot like Alpha Phi, so we were usually called AZD.

Oh I hear your pain. I always get questioned about the pronounciation of the "PHI". I went on a date once who kept calling my sorority "Pi Beta FEE". Even after countless corrections he still missed it. How confusing is this???

Actually, say that really fast and you'll see why that's a way to insult the house. Other girls houses say it here to annoy the Alpha Phis.

aephi alum 03-02-2002 09:54 AM

"Alpha Q" - That's terrible! We have Alpha Phi on my campus, but we never called them that...!

AOIIBrandi - We have AXO at my school also, and they were always called "A-Chi-O". The only time I ever heard "Alpha Chi" was during one of their rush parties... we (rushees) all left very confused... "I thought there was an omega in there somewhere??" We didn't have Chi O, though... so I suspect they went by AXO so as not to be confused with Alpha Phi.

SoTrue1920 03-02-2002 12:50 PM

It doesn't happen that often, but from time to time I'll get people who ask me "What's Zee Oh Bee?" when they see my letters. Now that I'm in Canada, I get "What's Zed Oh Bee?" ;)

dzsaigirl 03-02-2002 04:11 PM

I have been called a Delta and I have been called a Zeta. This is unfortunate since both of those names are real ways to refer to real organizations! That usually happens to me in the music building since those people don't normally have classes all over campus where they would be exposed to a lot of greek life...I am their only link :)

Let's not forget the age old Phi MOO. Drives me crazy. We all understand that saying moo to any girl, regardless of her affiliation really peaves us, but please...this is my sorority we're talking about!!!

For those genuinely confused on the pronunciation it is Phi MU as in Meeeeuuuu no where in there is there an O.

Thanks :)

My parents moved up to the boonies in northern michigan a few years ago. I ALWAYS buy my parents AGD mom and AGD dad stuff. Whenever they wear it to their club (They're in the Eagles. Theres NOTHING else to do there) someone always asks "What's A, backwards 7, triangle mean??" They don't even know it's greek letters. My mom is SOO tired of explaining it!!!

jharb 03-03-2002 05:38 PM

Our house had the baseball team over to dinner and I guess one of the guys wasn't clear on all the fraternities and sororities names and he asked what Psi Pi likes to do for socials. The girls at my table just about died laughing! The poor guy got a lot of ribbing from the other guys at our table. It was really funny...I bet he'll never forget that he was at Pi Phi again!

I was a music major in school and we had all 4 greek letter music oriented organizations. One of them is Phi Mu Alpha. As DZSAI girl mentioned in her post, many times music people are oblivious to greek life. Well anyway, some of the music girls we like Phi Mu Alpha groupies and they would shorten Phi Mu Alpha down to "Phi Mu" and tell people "Yeah, we're going to hang out with our Phi Mu boys" or "we're going to the Phi Mu" hayride. Being a Phi Mu myself, it used to drive me nuts. They did not seem to see the difference in the 2 organizations at all. When some of my friends from the school of music realized I was a Phi Mu they would say "Oh I didn't know it was co-ed...I thought it was all guys"

I was also a member of Tau Beta Sigma and people would pronounce the "Tau" as in "Tow" (like towel) but that's probably a common mispronunciation.

TrojanGirl 03-04-2002 02:25 AM

Phi Mu Alpha called Phi Mu? my QMA boys would be shocked.. most chapters call themselves Sinfonia. They are a very interesting group, a Music Oriented Social Fraternity. Some of the groups are going IFC on a local level and nmore social than music. Definately a group to watch for..
As for funny name stories :

My 15 year old brother calls Pi Phi "Pot Pie." He and his buddies think it is hilarious.

TG

ladybug1116 03-04-2002 03:48 AM

The guys referred to themselves as Phi Mu Alphas....it was the groupie girls who didn't know any better....they tried to impress others but only ended up looking unintelligent.

"Triangle Hook" Dad

My friend Johanna (a DG) had one of her Anchora magazines lying around , and you can purchase merchandise in there.

One thing was a baseball cap for fathers that said "I'm a Delta Gamma [in the letters] Dad". So her Dad saw this and said,

I'm a Triangle Hook Dad!

Yes, Triangle Hook indeed! :p :o
-------------------------------------------
On another note, do you ever get Rushees who are not that well informed about Greek life so they get confused between name pairs such as:

Alpha Chi Omega and
Chi Omega?

Alpha Delta Pi and
Alpha Omicron Pi?

Alpha Sigma Alpha and
Alpha Sigma Tau?

Delta Gamma and
Delta Zeta?

Phi Sigma Sigma and
Sigma Sigma Sigma?

Just wondering about that.....

Lisa Fishman 03-04-2002 09:45 AM

Has Alpha Delta Pi and Alpha Epsilon Phi and / or Alpha Epsilon Pi ever been mixed up or confused?

BrandiDZ 03-04-2002 01:02 PM

We have a strict chapter rule for recruitment which says that when talking about our sorority we must use the full name. This is because we have Delta Gamma on our campus and Dee Gee and Dee Zee sound too similiar.

i know that has to be irritating - but i busted out laughing at the backwards 7 part. My coworkers are looking at me strangely now

Peaches-n-Cream 03-05-2002 01:10 PM

When I rushed, I knew about AETT, but I was confused about AEF and AF and AFA. We had many GLOs that started with Alphas. I got it straightened out after I received my rush guide book! :D

An old boyfriend, who happened to be friends with several Kappa Alpha's, used to say things like, "So, are you going out with your Kappa Alpha girls tonight?" Then he has the nerve to say, "They're just letters, not like they mean anything" after I repeatedly corrected him. Oh shoot, I went off, telling him that they do happen to stand for something and they are very special to my sisters and I. That's some non-greeks for you!

The cutest is when my little brother calls me a Kappa Triangle. Spoken like a true 12 year old...

~ A proud Kappa DELTA

Hehehe...I hear that all the time.."Oh! You're a KA!" Err...no! LOL

My boyfriend is a KA, so when he lavaliered me, I wore it for about a week before the pinning circle. I figured someone would notice. They sure didn't! "Oh...I thought that was our letters!"

Alpha Sigs and other such things

On my campus, we have Alpha Sigma Alpha and Alpha Sigma Tau. A lot of the stuff we see from nationals calls us Alpha Sigs... and this year one of the new sisters put it on a rush poster to rush Alpha Sig - they were taken down fast, but I wonder how many girls looked at them and were confused.

Hi Jezebel!

We used "ASA" when referring to ourselves, but always had "Alpha Sigs" on our jackets. AST, the same...when they wrote it out they were Alpha Tau's or Tau's. The fact that they had "Tau Tigers" on everything helped people keep it straight.

DHgirl 03-09-2002 05:43 AM

My sorority, Delta Eta, frequently gets teased at my school. We're all engineers with a couple architects so the school gets a kick out of the fact that our letters, which are ÄH when written, are D.H. when casually spoken. Of couse, anyone who studies physical chemistry and thermodynamics knows that dH means change in enthalpy--a rigidly defined physical property of matter...It's kind of funny the first one or two times you hear it, but it gets old quickly. We're a social sorority not a geek squad:)!

douthit 03-11-2002 02:10 AM

Here at Montana State, two different sororities sent christmas cards that were addressed to the men of Phi Sigma! I know that a lot of people on campus call us the phi sigs, but to not care enough to include the last letter kind of ticked me off a little bit!

pheebs278 03-11-2002 07:43 AM

I'm sure all of my Alpha Phi sisters will relate to this one: People pronouncing Phi like "Ph-eye" instead of the way we actually pronounce it, "Ph-ee" We even have a song about it.

OnePlus69Is70 03-11-2002 10:05 AM

We're Omega Delta, but we refer to ourselves as OD, which leads to jokes about 'ODing with OD'. What's worse, we sometimes use the letters AA for our pledges, for ritual reasons. The oddest part is that all of these letters were chosen to stand for phrases in Greek, and the English is just a coincidence.

SigAlphSooner 03-11-2002 07:37 PM

We have some unique names all in fun of course!!

Beta - MasterBetas
GammaPhis - JammaVibrata (sorry, but its funny)
KKG - Krappa Krappa Grandma (stated by a Kappa herself!)
DU's - Delta OOPS I SIGNED!
PiKaps - Boy Pi Phi (not real original)

Blaire 05-23-2002 11:09 PM

funny names!

Okay, I won't name names, but one time a member of another NPC sorority asked me if I was a Delta Zappa instead of a Delta Zeta! This girl was wearing her letters and everything! I just smiled and said yes, I was. I was also asked why I had Arizona on my shirt before! :) Oh, and we've also been called Tri-Zappa! LOL! I swear, I couldn't make any of this up!!

Greek love and such,
Blaire

Proud to be a Delta Zee!

Greek_Girl 05-23-2002 11:24 PM

The first time I heard Alpha Phi pronounced it freaked me out. I was like you are a member of Alpha fee? huh? Then they clarified. I was really confused.

I have heard ADPi pronounced funny. I have never even heard of us being called Alpha Delts or AD. The funniest thing we ever get is people that misspell our name. We had intramural shirts made this year and when they came in we opened up the box to find "Alfha Delta Pi" shirts. That was hillarious. But, then on the receipt for the Alfha Delta Pi shirts was To: Alpha Gamma Delta Pi. That was pretty amusing too. Then the place we had a date party put out a welcome sign for Alpfa Delta Pi.

We just can't win!! Haha

:D

RedRoseSAI 05-23-2002 11:52 PM

I've worn letters and had people ask me about EAI (i.e., SAI) Kinda surprises me - didn't we all use the sigma as a symbol in high school math?

Kevin 05-24-2002 12:56 AM

Last summer we had our officer's retreat.

Was a blast, we stayed at the hotel the night before we had to do our planning sessions, etc...

There were adult beverages there and such.. Some fella from some other room in the hotel asked us where the "E N" party was.
