I am all about doing events with GSS. I would support thier philanthropy and fundraising events, as I hope they would support mine. I would have no problem coming together with a chapter of GSS and doing a project with them. I am just saying it is against the rules at my school to have a social function strictly with GSS. We love it when we get some GSS girls at our house on the weekends, because it adds variety, and we like that.
Lets agree to agree that it is different at every campus, and leave it at that. |
humm this is interesting…
why would GSS have to follow the rules of the social orgs? we are not a part of any panhell…. I do understand the whole liability issue but I don’t understand the point of this thread.. like I stated before I attended a HBCU.. So my campus culture was very different……. |
First you say ........

So whats the problem? The problem comes down to the solidification of NSOs and their members while their National has decided not to be apart of any governing council. Something any organization can do. But should the local chapter be shun because of it. These NSO's have to coexist on campus as a GLO as well as other GLOs that are in Councils. We have to attract from the same people and let individuals choose which organization they want to be with. It doesn't provide Non-Counciled NSOs with any advantage to not be apart, just as it wouldn't hurt any counciled-Social-NSOs to include, co-sponsor, have joint mixers, attend any events with NSO organizations. So I'm like Skeegee4me, there isn't any point to this thread. But I also believe that all GLO's stopping by could learn a little from this thread. It doesn't matter if your for or against it. We both exist. It's the coexistence that you have to accept at an individual level. JayBEE [This message has been edited by JayBEE! (edited June 18, 2001).] |
Hasn't this topic been beaten to death?
Folks in service orgs, you KNOW by now that not all greeks are going to like you or what you do. WHy do you care? DO your service, be about your business and let it go! You are not going to change any minds- the same people that don't like them aren't going to change their opinions regardless of what you say. |

I am just tired of this same ol argument! You always seem to be in it, complaining that social greeks don't like you and blah, blah, blah. Well some are never going to and you shouldn't worry about it cuz you can't change it! I KNOW there are mad people who hate on black greeks but I could care less! THey are not part of my workd, and I am proud of what I am doing so that ends the matter. You just need to let the whole thing go! |

I think you need to check yourself and state what you really believe, because if it isn't about letting me have my say then all you are doing is saying you don't want to hear it, next thread. When the next thread is where you should have went in the first place. |

I have every right to protest you cluttering up the space with the same ol argument. One tires of seeing it again and again, especially when I think that there are better things that we could be discussing- like positive ways that Service and social orgs can and do work together, instead of rehashing the old argument about who likes you and complaining about those who don't. If you don't like my opinion then you don't have to respond to me. Simple, no? |

ok i am just going to take it that most of you all are young...
this is pointless... becuase unless you are in a service org you will never understand so let it go becuase we at greeks aren't going any where GSS has lasted almost 50 years.. yall aint stoping us... so be bless and graduate http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif |
so to get back to the original point of this thread:
i am a gamma sig so i know at least a few chapters do have social insurance. it could be the case that at your university that chapter does. if you suspect they don't have insurance i'd take it up with IFC and make sure your frat doesn't have a social with them until you are sure on the insurance issue. gamma sigs have a lot of pride in not belonging to a council, so i don't think any chapter of gamma sig would be trying to "act" like a social sorority. (we were actually invited to join panhel decades ago and declined, just like we did with NPH.) we are just acting like us, and we would never turn down an invitation to be friendly, like an invite to be in greeksing or to cohost a social. i don't think we should be expected to turn it down either, just because we're not on this or that council or don't pay such and such dues. we don't participate in rush or own property (ie houses), so obviously we don't pay dues like yall do. since gamma sigs are only governed by themselves, we know the other chapters very intimately and can actually speak on what other chapters do. like stated before -- we would know if a chapter had pledges for longer than 10 weeks. not having a governing council obviously results in an amazing ability to self-govern. i trust my sisters all over the country fully when they say we don't haze. our non-hazing policy is almost as central to our sorority as our ideal of service. so like i said, talk to IFC or the gamma sig chapter about insurance, and maybe think about an IFC policy on "associating" with orgs other than panhel -- although, i hope you don't decide to associate exclusively with panhel, because you will miss out on meeting an amazing array of diverse and remarkable people that way -- and isn't meeting people what greek letter orgs are all about? |
You know this is a 6 and a half year old thread?
|
i actually didn't notice :) but i guess it's always good advice anyway

I'm going to go out on a limb and say I don't think the chapter at the OP's school has social insurance. A mixer is not an "invitation to be friendly" - it's a closed party that can have risk management implications and you shouldn't be participating if you don't have insurance that can cover for those implications. As far as Greek sing, if the money to hold the event comes from IFC and Panhel dues, and if it's a competition for prize money, only IFC and Panhel members should be contestants. Period. If GSS wants to sing as "halftime entertainment" while the ballots are being counted, go for it...but they shouldn't be contestants. And I hate to break it to you, but there ARE chapters of service Greeks all across the country that try to act like social Greeks. |

I also notice that you are new to gc so welcome and my advice to you is to observe and learn from others, especially the gc regulars, some of which have been greek for 15+ years. |
^^^Bravo sistergreek!! I <3 rhoyaltempest!

Pretty sure decades ago NPC wasn't "asking" anyone to join - talking about it isn't quite the same as a formal invitation - if you look at NPC history, some orgs went through some extreme measures in order to be able to petition to join. ( I'm especially thinking of those last groups to join in 1951) I'd like to know WHEN the supposed invitation was put forth - could you please link me to the NPC minutes for that? Thanx.

I'm wondering if perhaps she meant campus councils and was confused about terminology?
There are a few OPhiA chapters which are associate members of their campus Panhellenic Councils. |
Ahh geez. I forgot about this thread and I got a headache all over again...
Actually whiterose58 is correct about NPC. There was talk about Gamma Sig becoming a part of NPC in the 1960's (1964 actually), but because our sorority has a non-selectivity clause, there's no way that we could have been a part of NPC. That would have required the sorority to allow chapters to choose who becomes a part of that respective chapter, and that wasn't what the sorority was looking to do. So enough with the history lesson. whiterose58 welcome to GC and follow rhoyaltempst's advice. Some of us have been GC regulars for a minute and since I've been on here for about 8 years, I can tell you that I've heard just about everything in the book about GSS, but I've also learned about about other greeks too. Watch what you say before you say it! |

And so now, a new poster cannot ask questions and voice themselves?:o
For shame. |
A new poster can ask questions.
A new poster can "voice themselves". But if the new poster hasn't done his/her homework, or choses to engage others in argument, the new poster is not above reproach. |
