It's a Butler U thang!
Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated was founded on November 12, 1922 on the campus of Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana. Yes, the Alpha chapter is alive and kicking!

Correct, as a student at Longwood and a member of one of it's Alpha chapters, I can tell you that all 4 (Kappa Delta, Sigma Sigma Sigma, Zeta Tau Alpha, and Alpha Sigma Alpha... in founding order) are all still active and doing well... I think we'll all be around for a very long time. :) |
tridgirl,
I checked and our Alpha chapter at Boston University had a short period of deactivation but was recolonized and is now as strong as ever! |
It was a great honor for me to have been initiated into the Alpha Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority at Howard University where we are home to 5 Alpha Chapters out of the 9 BGLOs. The other Alpha Chapters at HU include that of (in chronological order, all coming after AKA) Omega Psi Phi (F), Delta Sigma Theta (S), Phi Beta Sigma (F), and Zeta Phi Beta (S). Lots of love to all Alpha Chapter members regardless of your organization, we all have a great deal to uphold and the blessing of having tons history right on our campus. Have you ever noticed all the ivies on the campus of HU?!Its a beautiful thang!

This also explains why LXA's Alpha chapter had some brief inactivity as well. Also I'm a big geek for knowing all this about my school - wow, go BU IFC reps . . . |
KSig RC,
So Tridelt was kicked off because they eliminated the Greek System at Boston University? I checked our online site and it just shows that there was a couple of years when they were closed. Thanks for clearing that up! Do you know how are they doing now and how the overall greek system is doing at BU? |
Theta Nu Xi was founded at UNC-Chapel Hill on April 11, 1997. They are alive and doing very well. http://www.plaudersmilies.de/butterfly.gif

Kappa Kappa Gamma was founded on October 13, 1870 at Monmouth College in Monmouth, Illinois. That's why you hear all that "Monmouth Duo" stuff and see emblems with a crossed key and arrow to put on party favors. Alpha Deuteron is still going strong, back after Monmouth banned Greek organizations for a while.
Whoever posted about Lombard College no longer existing and therefore AXiD's Alpha chapter is gone: Isn't Lombard College now Knox College...I know Knox only has 2 sororities, Tri-Delt and Pi Phi...but aren't they the same school, anyway? |
Delta Gamma's first chapter was called "Psi". That was at the Lewis School (a sort of "finishing school for young ladies). That chapter no longer exists.

Our greek system is mediocre at best, but fairly good for the NE (god i miss the midwest) . . . around 9-10% greek for girls, more like 6 or 7 for the guys (out of 14,000 students). Currently checking in at 8 NIC fraternities plus a colony, 9 NPC sororities, plus AKA, DST, APhiA and KAPsi have strong city-wide chapters. |
The Lewis School for Girls was in Oxford, Miss, which is in the area of Ole Miss now. Our chapter at Ole Miss is our Alpha Psi chapter.
Our oldest continuous chapter of DG is the Eta Chapter located in Akron, OH at the University of Akron. They were founded in 1879. |

Our Alpha Chapter was Norwich Univeristy in VT. They're a military academy and in 1960 they said no more frats. :( I think VMI has the same policy. Sigma Nu was founded there.
|
Alpha Sigma Tau's Alpha Chapter was established at Eastern Michigan University on November 4, 1899.
|
Our Alpha Chapter...
The Alpha Chapter of Gamma Sigma Sigma is located at the University of Houston, but it's no longer active. UH was actually one of our founding schools.
Our oldest chapter (and the one members really view as our founding chapter anyway) is Zeta chapter at Drexel. They will be turning 50 this year on our Founders' Day. |
Farmhouse Fraternity
Even though someone already said that my chapter's Alpha chapter no longer exists, I do know of a fraternity's Alpha chapter that does still exist, that's on my campus.
Farmhouse fraternity was founded on my campus, University of Missouri-Columbia, in 1905 and they are still very active today. One of the best/biggest fraternities on our campus, they won homecoming last year which is a huge deal, and I know every girl LOVES to have parties/events with them! ;) They are a bunch of nice, fun, very very cute guys. They are also our next door neighbors, which is lovvvvvely! Anyway, just a little bit of info for yall. :D |
Phi Sig's Alpha chapter is (was) at Hunter College in New York... it is inactive... actually we had an alpha alpha as well because the hunter campus split I'm not sure if it was a new college when they did that or just like an extension of the same school... but they started a new chapter at the new "branch" of the campus. At least that's what I learned any phi sig who knows a bit more may want to clarify...

LXA Alpha Chapter still open at Boston U. 1909!
BX Alpha lasted 9 months and colonized into LXA 9 months later! Damn I am good!:) Unfortunatley the way schools and risk magaement and insurance is today we all have a problem! Alfred U NY just banned Greek Orgs. Denison U Oh just outlawed Houses for Greeks! We need to do more to make the schoold realize that there is a need for us!:D |
I'm in our Alpha Capter, based out of Maryland.
|
Iota Phi Theta
Our Alpha Chapter is located at Morgan State University (back then it was Morgan State College) in 1963 by 12 men.
|
Alpha Delta Pi was founded at Wesleyan Female College in Macon, Georgia in 1851. That would be our alpha chapter did it still exist, but Wesleyan ended greek life on its campus, because the competition was getting to high.

Phi Sigma Kappa's alpha chapter is at The University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Mass., formerly Massachusett's Agricultural College in Amherst. They are still active and we have a beautiful house up there from what I'm told.

Well I am not greek but here is all the founding dates and schools of Black Greek letter Organizations:
Alpha Phi Alpha Inc.- Cornell University, 1906 Alpha Kappa Alpha- Howard University, 1908 Kappa Alpha Psi- Indiana University, 1911 Omega Psi Phi- Howard University, 1911 Delta Sigma Theta, Howard University, 1913 Phi Beta Sigma, Howard University. 1914 Zeta Phi Beta, Howard University, 1920 Sigma Gamma Rho, Indian University, 1922 Iota Phi Theta, Morgan State College, 1963 |
Phi Kappa Psi was founded at Washington and Jefferson College (Pennsylvania Alpha chapter) in Canonsburg, PA in 1852 (this is our 150 year anniversary!). Phi Gamma Delta (FIJI) was also founded there-both chapters are still in existence...
|
Pi Kappa Alpha's Alpha Chapter is at the University of Virginia.
We were founded in Room 47 West Range on March 1, 1868. Our Alpha chapter is still very much active, along with more than 200 others! |
Sigma Alpha Iota was founded June 12, 1903 at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. The chapter is very much alive and active today! :)
|
Sigma Chi's is up there as the Miami Triad in Oxford, OH
and supposedly they only call themselves "Alphas" rather than Sigs, not sure about that though |
Zukes
Zukes alpha chapter was at Rensailler Polytechnical Institute and is still active. April 29th, 1864

Ranita, Let's not get into that one! Good topic for our forum though :) Check it out at the private one! |
It's too bad that both Alpha Delta Phi and Phi Mu (the two oldest women's fraternities) had their Alpha chapters disappear when Weslyan eliminated the greek system.
Interestingly enough, one of the founders of ADPhi was roommates with one of the founders of Phi Mu. The ADPhi girl started her society, and when the Phi Mu founder asked to join, she was denied. So she started her own. |
Kappa Alpha Theta founded at Asbury College (now Depauw University (Greencastle, Indiana)) January 27, 1870 as the first greek letter fraternity known among women. I know this is disputable, but that I what I heard from my chapter. :)
But Alpha is alive and kicking still and one of the most respected sororities on the 75% Greek campus. I think another was founded there too. But anyways, I know a couple of people that are members of Alpha chapter and they are awesome :). It is nice to see an Alpha chapter that is still as active today as it was when it was founded. I have enjoyed this post about all the active chapters still out there. :) |
I think the key is to listen to the *exact* phrasing. There are a lot of different terms.
ADPi was the first, but they *called* themselves the Adelphian Society (correct me, please, if I'm wrong.) Phi Mu wasn't far behind with the Philomathian Society. Phi Mu was founded in 1852, and I *think* ADPi was earlier that year, but they may have been the year before. I bet Theta was the first to use greek letters, and that's where the confusion sets in. Greek Love! ~ Jacquelyn |
Yes, we were the first ones to use greek letters ADphi, phi mu and any others probably were really just "secret societies". That is the way I always percieved it. And then Theta came along and used Greek letters and so the others joined in! :) That is definitely where the confusion lies.
