It also looks like one round is being eliminated and PNMs will go 21-12-3. I hope I am getting correct information.

:eek::eek: Talk about a massive drop-off! Recs will be even more important now that the chapters suddenly have to cut huge numbers of girls with fewer chances to meet them. Ranking chapters for the PNMS will be really hard as well...hopefully Panhellenic provides them booklets to write their thoughts in or something to that effect.

CookiesNCream 01-07-2014 07:12 PM

^ The above schedule is correct but it's 24 rounds, not 23. So all PNMs will have 3 breaks somewhere in their 21 party schedule.

21 party will function as 14 party with skits, 12 party will function as 8 party with the slideshows, and 3 party will remain the same.

And don't worry, all PNMs will be receiving a book for notes and such just as they have in years past.

IndianaSigKap 01-07-2014 07:14 PM

Clemonsgirl, a vast majority of IU PNMs do not get recs. IU did away with pre-recruitment activities this year and the recs were the gateway to getting those pre-recruitment invites. I briefly spoke with an advisor at a chapter who said they got around 100 and most of those were legacy forms or from relatives (niece, cousin, granddaughter) who weren't officially legacies in their GLO.

Interesting! Thanks for letting me know about that, as I figured that in a recruitment as large and competitive as Indiana's they'd be more important. And I'm glad to hear that they've always given out recruitment books as well-this year was the first year Clemson did it and I have no idea how previous PNMs kept 12 groups straight without one, let alone 21.

Recs are about as useful as the piece of paper they're written on at IU, just because of the sheer math involved. The chapters are actually easier to keep straight than you think because of the door chants/skits/etc. I still remember the door chants of some chapters and I went through recruitment a whopping 6 years ago :)

This will be a VERY interesting recruitment season at IU

The elimination of pre recruitment activities would seem to make recs less important. I was able to secure several recs for my step daughter for last year's recruitment and the pre rush invites were VERY helpful to her. She was only a legacy at my house (which is not at IU) so no Greek connections other than some high school friends in houses. She was a rush crush of an active she met at one and that was house she pledged and that active became her big sister. Sure, she might have gotten a bid anyway, but we now know from this active that my step daughter was always on their top list because they bonded at this pre-recruitment party.

You got it. The next Saturday (formerly 8 now 12 party) is an interesting schedule as well. Let's just say my email and cell phone have blown up this evening.

Low D Flat 01-07-2014 11:00 PM

With only three brief parties to meet PNMs, they're keeping the skits? I know the houses have put a lot of effort already into rehearsing etc., but sheesh.

DubaiSis 01-07-2014 11:37 PM

Those cuts are deadly. My note to the girls going through - DO NOT TAKE THESE CUTS PERSONALLY. I know it sucks and it's hard to accept, but the chapters have to make massive cuts. Just because you might not have made the cuts at some of your favorite chapters doesn't mean they didn't like you; it just means they liked more girls than they had spaces for. Chin up, keep hydrated, this is no time for partying or anything else that isn't eat, sleep, rush, and be supportive of one another. Good luck!

Griffins&Quills 01-07-2014 11:49 PM

Wow, I just can't even imagine having to pick only 3 chapters out of 12. That is a huge drop. It's almost a disservice to the girls and the chapters as neither really gets to know each other well enough. :/

Yes, they are keeping the skits.

DubaiSis 01-08-2014 05:12 PM

But do I understand the parties are longer? So they can mix convo and skit in 1 party. I definitely feel for them. If it was back in my day, I'd be sending those girls a couple bottles of something to pass around after the parties! But laws, jail, blah blah blah. I guess I won't ;)

Griffins&Quills 01-08-2014 07:11 PM

Bahahaha you crack me up

IndianaSigKap 01-09-2014 11:15 PM

According to campus sources 1616 women checked in tonight AND Very Bradley Company provided the small quilted ID/holder change purse wallets for all of the PNMs. There is a correlation between IU's Kappa Delta chapter and someone big at Vera Bradley. KDs help me out here.

Shellfish 01-09-2014 11:27 PM

Patricia Polito Miller, one of the two founders of Vera Bradley, is an initiate of the KD chapter at Indiana.

Yep, just heard from step daughter, she is in the skit for her house. She said there are 24 rounds with 3 breaks....I can't tell if that lines up with the schedule that you posted. Yikes, it just sounds brutal for all involved.

cinder1965 01-10-2014 12:17 AM

Just answered my own question, the schedule posted has 24 rounds with three breaks. Its too late and I am not thinking clearly!

Are there any IU recruitment stories out there yet???

I think you mean more like recruitment epics or recruitment sagas...The Odyssey has nothing on this.

LOL, yes....epics, dramas, sagas! :) Which will be especially true with the party modifications because of weather.

Hoosierxgirl 01-10-2014 10:41 AM

It seems I've been missing all the fun!

I was wondering how they were going to respond to the snowpocalypse we are having in Indiana and I can't believe all the changes this year! I was totally shocked when I found out they changed 21 Party (before the weather) - they tried to move it all 4 years that I was at IU.

Excited to see how things pan out - I miss recruitment so much!

Vera Bradley also sent gifts to all the sorority houses.

That was very nice of Vera Bradley to do! Not to mention a great marketing tool. If you give me the wallet and I really like the print, I might buy the backpack or purse at a later date.

Hope you're surviving FR!

So far so good, but I have to admit, even though I like our skit, after the fourth viewing I stopping going into the dining room to watch. Not sure how the actives are going to stay looking interested by the 24th viewing!!!

Sorry I had to laugh! I remember having to be in those skits...luckily I only had to do it 15 times. :-) Doing anything like that 15 times is painful, I cannot (and do not) want to imagine 24 times.

I did a little quick math, if all 1616 girls attended preference (which we know they won't, but it would be nice if they did) and IU did quota/total not bed rush, quota would be 76 women. Those would be manageable new member classes.

Why not every round? Cost?

Cost and bathroom breaks, I suppose. There are PNMs who would be afraid to turn down the drink for misguided fear of being cut, imagine who many times said PNMs would need to use the facilities. ;)

They would have to add a "Bathroom Round."

So do they get plain drinks or fancy drinks? Because if I was a party chair and came up with something clever for the drink, I would be super annoyed to only serve it to a fracture of the PNMs.

DubaiSis 01-10-2014 10:33 PM

"clever" and "drinks" sounds a little suspect and reminds me of going through rush myself when a chapter served virgin strawberry daiquiris with long wooden skewers of frozen fruit. But they didn't plan for what to do with the drippy daggers of fruit once out of the glass, and you couldn't drink with the skewer in the glass. It was hysterical.

This round is sort of plain (we are serving pink lemonade). Next round they get a little more fancy- plus you get a small snack. 3 party you get fancy ( think cake pops and chocolates and sparking cider type stuff).

We obviously have different definitions of "manageable". :D I went to a school where total was 80 and NM classes hovered around 30-35.

I was wondering that myself. I was guessing that the only allowable drink (at least during 21 party) would be water. I'd hate to be a PNM and compare notes with another PNM and find out she got pink lemonade and iced tea and Coca-Cola during her drink rounds whereas I got water, water, and water. Also, if you're scheduled for a break during a drink round, do the rho chis (or whatever they are called at IU) give you something to drink?

IUHoosiergirl88 01-11-2014 10:53 AM

Usually, drink rounds increased in 'fanciness'--21 party at all houses was water and soda/diet soda, 12 party was usually something a little fancier (like blue punch or whatever for adpi), 8 party was something even fancier (hot chocolate with a chocolate spoon with peppermint), and 3 party was sparkling cider.

You can carry water or something in your bag, usually if you have more than a 1 round break between parties you go back to whatever meeting place your rho gamma assigns (union, library, etc.) to hang out. It's not the hunger games :)

ETA: well it is the hunger games, but not because of drinks!

Imagine if the PNMs had to figure out how to get water out of a tree like in the movie or die of thirst...only salt water for you at parties! Get your own spile! (note for the clueless, like me: spile is the tappy thing that gets water out of trees. The more you know!)

Unfortunately the campus sources who advised that IU PNM's were given Vera Bradley items (at check-in Thursday evening or any time since then) were incorrect! Checked with my daughter who is a PNM and no such luck!
