There is definitely no preference night. The recruitment process is an online application, an interview, and then you must attend at least one of two recruitment events. Then on Bid Day you go to the Greek Life office and receive your envelope. Sorry if that was unclear! I didn't want to sound like I was complaining on how it was done, I definitely didn't mean to come across that way...I just think it would have been better had you got a phone call if you didn't receive a bid (as you do during formal recruitment, at least at my school) but it is totally fine if that is the way they wish to run things.

AZTheta 09-05-2013 05:03 PM

oh my. That does seem rather "harsh" IMO but if there is a time gap, that is a good thing. Do what 33 said: pick up your card and open it in private. I do hope this ends well for you; a colony is a unique experience and opportunity.

DeltaBetaBaby 09-05-2013 06:31 PM

Yeah, I don't see why they don't just go with a "no thanks" email to the women not chosen, but I guess in a situation without Rho Chis and such, there is no easy way to do the rejections.

Sciencewoman 09-05-2013 06:41 PM

When we colonized on the campus where I teach, there were 4 CLCs (traveling consultants) on the team and they made personal phone calls to the women who did not receive bids. I think that was a good way to handle it, but I know they said those were hard phone calls to make, and obviously they'd be hard to receive. We had a Panhellenic limit on how many women we could take...total + 10.

TiareNoire 09-05-2013 06:54 PM

When I went through a colony recruitment, the pref night was invite only and you received a call the day of the pref party in the morning so you'd know if you were invited or not. My phone call went well though I wasn't chosen. I hope it works out for you!

KSUViolet06 09-05-2013 07:36 PM

I was just thinking of something.

This could very well be one of those situations where it is said that your envelope could have a bid or a rejection type note in it, but SURPRISE, everyone's says "Congratulations!"

Ex: When I was going through COR, I was told that "the chapter wanted to meet me again before making any decisions" and when I got there, I was surprised with my bid.

pinkandpearls 09-05-2013 08:43 PM

^Not sure if that will be the case, there are definitely more girls going through recruitment than the colony can take so I don't know if that would work.

honeychile 09-05-2013 08:49 PM

A colony can take a LOT of members! ADPi just colonized at JMU with 201 ladies!

I obviously don't know, but it was just a thought!

Colonies generally take about the same amount of women as the average chapter size on campus, though. Ex: If everyone has 70 women, the colony will likely be about that size or maybe slightly larger.

Yeah we did! And there are so many decisions made constantly that PMN's are not made aware of (good things)! It was an amazing year for Theta Omicron and we are going through our first formal recruitment right now!!! (I'm one of the advisors)

Please wish them well for me! <>

Missouri Ivy 09-05-2013 10:09 PM

When I went through colony recruitment, we went to the student union building to pick up our envelopes that held our bid or regret card, as was described. While it was hard ripping open the envelope and seeing I didn't get a bid, I don't know that a phone call would have been any better. Rejection sucks, no matter how it's delivered.

This may be top-secret selection stuff but does GPA generally count for anything other than if you are above the minimum requirement? No pressure to answer, but I was just wondering!

Yes, this is membership selection, and we won't formally answer it, but there are always choices to be made among women, and virtually anything about those women is up for consideration.

Now that Bid Day is one week away I am very stressed/nervous/excited. I wish it would get here sooner...I am at the point where I just really want to know what is going to happen. There is one more event this week and then the colonization process will be over. The suspense is killing me! :(

Good luck! From your initial post, I was able to determine where you are attending school and what sorority is colonizing there and all I can say is that any NPC (or NPHC) that you have the chance to join is well worth it. I wish you the best of luck! Please come back and let us know how things worked out!

Eeek, thought I was being discrete but looking back I guess I wasn't, going to go back and delete a little information since I can tell by your post you have the right school...you guys are too good at this :) Thank you for the well wishes and I will definitely keep you posted!

DubaiSis 09-08-2013 05:06 PM

You didn't say anything negative or harmful so I wouldn't worry about it, but word to the wise - we are VERY smart. And once you've followed this site through a couple rush seasons, you really do get a feel for what's going on where. You also get an idea of who's hot and who's not so even when you (not YOU, but you know, other girls) think you're being discreet, I'd be careful about how negative you go in your descriptions.

Okay...I'm glad I didn't say anything wrong...as soon as someone said they could tell the school and GLO I freaked :eek::eek::eek: However if someone starts to say that they know my full name and mailing address I might officially be scared :D:D:D

However, just to be on the cautious side I am deleting all my posts. I will keep you guys updated as to what happens, I just don't want to do anything that may hurt my chances at this amazing opportunity the slightest bit :)

You don't have to erase your posts. I apologize if you were upset about this. If it makes you feel better, not everyone knows and I'm not about to share it with anyone where you are going to school. Us long-time GCers can usually figure out the school but, we generally don't give it away so, no worries. You didn't say anything that could be viewed as offensive in the least. I just knew where you were for various reasons to include the way your school newspaper discussed the colonization and I am at a school nearby for graduate work so, I had a hunch. As an involved alumna, I'm aware of the colonizations of my own organization as well as others--thanks to GC. We all wish you the best of luck! I can't wait to hear how things turn out! Crossing my fingers that you find your home! :)

Thank you so much, that makes me feel much better :) I really hope I find my home too, but regardless of the outcome I am truly having a wonderful recruitment experience that I don't think I would give up either way. I am not only excited to see the outcome for myself, but how the colony will thrive in the Greek community at my school.

Thanks guys, I am SO excited! It is amazing that I woke up in the morning with 142 new sisters! Apparently a total of 413 girls interviewed...I am really glad that I didn't know those odds beforehand or I would have been freaking out. I will definitely look at badges! Will post a picture of my gorgeous colony soon!
