The financial support is needed and much appreciated, but I really don't want to see GC subscriptions cause any friction between members. Please let this be a no-pressure thing. :)

Anyone who can subscribe will be thanked for the help and they will receive the account bonus features for doing so, but I do appreciate everyone who is here on GC, including members, subscribers & even the website guests without a GC account.

GC would not be manageable without moderators, so obviously they are a really big help to keeping this community operating well. But everyone can be helpful in a way, whether a moderator, subscriber or general site member. Being active on GC creates new content on the site, which helps to keep other members and visitors interested. That in turn creates a cycle of increased activity & interest in GC. Anyone who wants to help outside of subscribing can also spread the word simply by telling a few friends that GC now has bonus account features for subscribers.

Anyhow, let's keep this no or low pressure as possible & just have fun with it. Big thanks to everyone who is helping out no matter how you are doing so! :)

And a democratic process for selecting moderators

I also believe this is very important for the GC community. We did have somewhat of a democratic process in place including nominations along with review by the current mods team, but it's been a very long time since any of that has been done. Even years ago I was thinking about ways we could make very good improvements to this overall process.

However, that all takes time which I could no longer afford to give so much of to GC. If the level of GC subscriptions exceeds my expectations, then I would certainly be able to spend a serous amount of time working on the site sorting out every issue & developing new features. Even at a lower level of continued subscriptions it would enable me to consistently spend at least part-time work on the site which would also be overall quite good. For a while now the time I could offer only allowed for server maintenance, software maintenance and the most urgent issues within the forums, but hopefully that will be able to change in a good way.

I thought this account was yours but wasn't sure. Did you lose access to your other account or just having some fun with this one? By the way, thanks again for your previous advertising purchase.

I can dig it.

Just wanted a fresh start. :)

no pressure

John, it's your show, so I'm cool with that.

I come from a non-profit fundraising background where the staff and volunteers are supposed to lead the way with donations with 100% participation.

I'm glad the response has been good.

John 06-08-2013 05:16 PM

Hard drive adapters have been purchased & are on the way. Looking into the hard drives next.

GC isn't a non-profit (more like a negative-profit  so far), but if you have any tips or ideas on how I might improve my efforts I am certainly all ears. :) Please feel free to send a PM with any suggestions if you would like. I can absolutely understand the value of getting advice from others experienced in this area.

OK, now I'm still confused. Recurring subscriptions or no? I couldn't find an orange * on the page.... just confused.

Sorry for the confusion. That notation on the ordering page is a default of the forum software. I'll see about getting it out of there so it doesn't confuse anyone else. It's there just so that you know if you see the asterisk that it means the specific subscription option is automatically renewed after the subscription expires.

I didn't setup auto recurring subscriptions, though. The current options on the subscription page are both one-time purchases, no automatic recurring charges. When subscriptions expire, renewals would need to be done manually for those who choose to continue their subscriptions.

Have you thought about making an app for GC?

Yes, I've been thinking about it. I know there's at least some interest in us having an app for GC as it's been suggested a few times. I might spend a bit of time looking further into this in the very near future.

badgeguy 06-09-2013 12:19 AM

Cool. Let me know if you do and are able to find a good company to develop one. (Or if you're able to do it yourself)....

I've been wanting to develop an app for identifying groups, especially all the old locals and defunct groups.....

I ordered the hard drives last night. Once the drives and adapters arrive I can start building the new server. Thanks to everyone for subscribing and making it possible to get these remaining parts so the server build could be completed.

I know it's been addressed, but I'm still replying. It's no secret around here that my husband's job was eliminated over eight months ago and he's still job hunting. We've got three sons graduating next spring, two from college and one from HS. As I've posted here, I've already pledged my subscription to John as soon as our financial situation changes. That's why this moderator isn't subscribing right now.

Why or why not the decision to subscribe to an online message board is yours, or anyone else's business, is beyond my comprehension.

Alpha love to you sister! You and anyone else need not have to explain to anyone your financial situation or decisions. This economy has been tough for many. Not everyone is in a position to help out right now, and judging those who can't but would love to help is counterproductive. Fingers crossed that jobs are coming for everyone on GC who needs one.

Exactly. And how would one know who had subscribed and who hadn't? Some may choose not to add an avatar and some may choose not to post in the private forum.

For a lot of years, I couldn't afford to donate to our Foundation, but I gave a ton of my time. Everybody contributes in the way that they can.

Then surely you know that the main driver behind 100% participation is to impress outside funding foundations, which isn't applicable here.

*pulling out the "see the way my account is set up..." card*

But seriously, I get paid on Friday, and to think I've been here almost 10 years... GC is my longest relationship LOL :sads: I've met and e-met some awesome people on here, including my bestie, so I gotchu John.

GratefulGramma 06-12-2013 03:40 PM

I subscribed for a year. Obviously, my paypal account isn't set up as "greatful gramma", and it isn't under the email account that I am registered here with; will you know who I am? It's probably a silly question, but I'm old.

Thanks for subscribing! :) Most accounts will upgrade during the transaction / immediately after. I checked and can confirm that your account is already upgraded. You can get details on how to upload avatars, profile photos & anything else related to all that in the subscribers forum.

As I'm still setting this subscription system & bonus features all up, I'll eventually make it a little easier to notice when an account is upgraded.

ASUADPi 06-12-2013 05:11 PM

I will subscribe as soon as I figure out how you pay via paypal. How does that work? Do I put money (via my checking account) into paypal to pay for this subscription?

John, I am glad to help. I have been on GC longer than any other website and I have met some of my closest friends here.

amIblue? 06-12-2013 06:42 PM

I just subscribed! Thanks for what you do!

PayPal enables payment even if you don't have a PayPal account.

When you're on the subscriptions page, select the option you want to go with in the pull-down menu and click the 'order' button which is to the right of the menu.

The next page that comes up is basically there in case I had more than one payment method setup. It should forward immediately to PayPal since that is the only option, but on this page you need to click the "Order Using PayPal" button.

Next page is on the PayPal site. You'll should see on the right side two different payment options, the top one being if you have a PayPal account (it asks you to login) and below that if you don't have a PayPal account.

Fill out the info, click "Continue" and the next page that comes up will be where you can enter in your credit or debit card payment info. After that, click "Review and Continue" button at the bottom of the page.

On the next page, simply click the "Pay Now" button.

I'd like to support. First off, hello to John -hope all is well with you. I have a question. If I subscribe, it's not going to automatically renew and charge my card yearly, is it? I know that's a silly question to most, but I'm just checking.:D

Both subscription options are one-time charges. No automatically renewing charges. If you choose to subscribe again when your subscription expires you would need to do so manually.

The notice on that page about it being recurring, if there's a *, is a default notice from the forum software. I'll see about getting that notice changed or removed soon so it's less confusing.

Thanks a lot for your interest in helping to support GreekChat! Much appreciated!

Kevin 06-14-2013 07:03 PM

John, have you considered varying subscription levels, e.g., silver/gold/platinum where users have different features offered to them such as maybe for $99/year we could host images on the site, etc.?

I haven't thought much about it, but would definitely consider other subscription level options if there was interest.

For anyone else reading this, would you be interested in what Kevin described? Are there any other bonus accounts features that you would like to have?

AGDLynn 06-15-2013 12:38 AM

I have no idea with what that means!

I think I reached my potential figuring out the avatar! ;)

AZTheta 06-15-2013 09:34 AM

Hey, AGDLynn, I clicked on your avatar to see it more clearly and got to your profile. Happy to see that you are a Scorpio as well. Anyway I wasn't creepin' on you, just in case you wonder. And whatever that avatar is, I like the colors.

Don't have an opinion on any of the tech stuff, leaving that to others.
