There are many events on campus to Honor Dr. King but I plan to participate in the Project Volunteer Program. Hopefully, later that evening I will be able to attend a Read-A-Thon in his Honor and participate in the reading of his writings and/or speeches.

What are your plans?
I will be joining my chapter members and our UGs at the same Substance Abuse treatment facility from last year. We had a wonderful time last year with the clients. I'm sure the experience will be rewarding for all parties involved.

We had a GREAT morning. Chapter members, undergraduates, and the clients had a WONDERFUL time celebrating the legacy of DR. King and the legacy of each person present.

Good day

I had to work, but I just got back from assisting another SoCal chapter with its King Day project. We helped pack food boxes for the Orange County Food Bank in Garden Grove.

FYI.....Linda White and others were at the King Day services at Ebenezer Baptist Church this morning. Christine King Farris gave her and the other ladies a "shout out" for their assistance to the King Family in 1972. Does anyone know if Dr. Farris is an AKA? She drew out the name like only a lady of AKA could! LOL

AKA2D '91 01-18-2005 09:14 AM

Yes, our National Founder's Day weekend was in the ATL. During the weekend, Sorors were to participate in the MLK services as well.

Dr. Farris, I am not sure is she is a soror. I'm sure it won't be hard to find out that information. :D

(The others came too late!)

Too cute and funny!

Since I've not been to a chapter meeting in a few months (classes on Saturdays) I'm not sure what my chapter is doing, but I may go to our celebration here locally. There hasn't been much discussed about it, or maybe I've been so deep in students I haven't heard.

Ideal08 01-06-2006 12:33 PM

I'm supposed to do service with Sigma Omega chapter here in Cincinnati. *note to self* I need to call Soror WenD08...

unspokenone25 01-06-2006 07:40 PM

I will find out next week what our chapter is doing at our monthly chapter meeting. Will update soon...

Last year I volunteered to help clean up & paint @ a local children's hospital with the chapter I have an interest in... This year, I will call a memberfriend to see if I can volunteer again... If not, I will help out with my church's MLK Jr. Day program.

Obsession8 01-07-2006 01:17 AM

I'll be in Jackson, MS

I'll be in Jackson, MS, for our NFD Celebration the weekend prior to the MLK holiday. On that actual day, I'll be back in Monroe with my chapter doing various community service activities on and off campus (I'm not sure exactly what and where just yet). :)

Steeltrap 01-07-2006 01:38 AM

I am not sure what I will be doing just yet. I may be off and do service w/my chapter, or I may do service with one of the L.A. chapters, as I did last year.:)

Bernice King will be speaking at FSU tomorrow as a part of our MLK celebration so I will be attending tomorow. If you are in Tallahassee, she will be speaking at 11pm in Ruby Diamond Auditorium on the campus of Florida State University. These events usually fill up quick even though the auditorium can seat a few thousand.

She spoke at Lander a few years ago and she was very good! I even got a chance to meet her and she autographed one of her books!

For me, I'll probaby volunteer at the hospital.:) I'm used to doing some community service on MLK Day.

06pilot 01-11-2006 02:52 PM

When I was stationed in Hawaii, pur chapter (Mu Beta Lambda) would feed the homelss at a shelter and then march iinthe MLK day parade.

Yes, I didnt believe it either but they do celebrate MLK in Hawaii.

Shalom08 01-13-2006 01:40 AM

^^^^
06pilot...it's late so maybe my R.I.F./comprehensive skills have gone to bed...but why does MLK holiday/celebration in Hawaii surprise you? When I lived in Europe, Americans celebrated MLK Holiday as if they were in America --- I'm not understanding your comment.

Our chapter will be helping several families that have relocated from Africa with organizing all the donated items and setting up each room until their houses are homes. :)

06pilot 01-13-2006 02:48 PM

It was meant more as alighthearted comment. It doesnt really surprise me. I think its great. Many people think MLK was a Black hero. I believe he was an American hero. Meant to be celebrated by all the world, not justt black americans. I think that if the world were opposite, meaning white people were discriminated against that MLK would have fought just as hard for their civil rights as he did for ours. Ibelieve he was sent by God on a mission of peace.

I recognized Dr. King's birthday by participating in the Chicago Cares MLK Day of Service. This is an event where several hundred participants are bused to various service projects around the city. This time, my team and I worked to pull together the children's library at a local elementary school. Everyone had a great time, and we got sooooo much accomplished. The highlight of the project was the colorful mural that we painted on one of the walls. When I get the pics back, then I will try to post one. This is my second time participating in Chicago Cares, and I definitately plan to make this an annual event!

AKA2D '91 01-16-2006 11:47 AM

I will be feeding hurricane survivors!

PerfectPearl 01-16-2006 07:54 PM

We tutored students at a local library and taught them about Dr. King and his contributions. There were activities for all age groups and levels. each student took home a new book of their choosing.
Last night as part of the local NPHC we hosted a reception and Voter Registration with the other greeks. We provided extensive refreshments, prior to an annual Dr. King church celebration.

Can anyone say S E R V I C E !!!!

unspokenone25 01-16-2006 11:33 PM

Although I wasn't able to attend due to a Moot Court competition, Sorors were at a library in our service area reading to K-3 children. The children were then able to create their own books as part of the Young Author's Program Initiative. I heard that it went very very well! :D

CountryGurl 01-17-2006 09:46 AM

We helped to host a candlelight ceremony and a program commemorating Dr. King at a local Community College.

My Habitat for Humanity affiliate was one of the ones chosen to build framework for houses to be shipped to LA for Hurricane Victims. We built the framework for the house and then we will ship it to Lafayette LA where it will be reassembled with people from Prudential Fox & Roach and some from our HFH affiliate. There were a lot of folks who came out to give a hand in putting the house together and it was a lot of fun!

Proverbs31 01-17-2006 06:25 PM

My school had its annual MLK day of service in which my chapter participated. We volunteered at an area Boys and Girls Club. We also participated in an annual MLK march.
