Thank you, thank you, thank YOU, MysticCat! I really wondered about the mysterious "pompatus" for many years. I gave up the search about 10 years ago, but should have known Wikipedia would have the answer. I am complete now.

Why did I care about it, though? Can someone search my psyche and tell me why this even mattered to me?

I remember an NPR story about this a year or so ago. I have always thought that discussing the origins of the pompatus of love could make a great best man speech at a wedding.
