Search IU or Indiana on here and there are several threads about this

Do you think women dropped out because they felt Greek life wasn't for them or that 21 parties in two days is totally overwhelming? I heard from one of the girls I know going through and she was so totally exhausted on Sunday, she just ranked in a hurry to get out of there and didn't really put a lot of thought into it.

I looked at those stats from the link above and the number of women that go unmatched after preference. Seems like a lot? Can a very large school like IU use another group? Anyway, good luck and study hard on those final exams!

There are multiple solutions which could alleviate the excessive number of unmatched bids each year.

1.) Move from bed quota to regular quota and set a chapter total. IU does not have chapter total set by Panhel. I believe that chapter sizes range from 160ish to 110 and that is the chapters' choice.
2.) Allowing seniors to live out would mean 20-40 women could be added to each chapter.
3.) Move recruitment to August prior to school starting so many girls would not have been influenced about which chapters are the "best" chapters. Many of the women who drop out do so because they did not receive invitations from chapters they "liked". Don't get me started on this one, the chapters at IU are large enough that I think women could be happy in multiple chapters, I know I would have been.
4.) Free up the land on Jordan for sorority expansion. This would give the two chapters without structures a chance to build some type of dwelling/meeting space. Then use the land to attract the remaining NPC chapters.

I'm not sure this is a really bad way to go. We, as old broads, know the likelihood is she would probably be happy in ANY of the chapters, so not worrying about it is probably as good a way to go as any. Good luck to her and to the rest of them.

brighteyedgirl 12-04-2012 12:40 AM

There were many people who did drop during 21 party alone, and many people who dropped right after. I, personally, loved every second of it and will be continuing.

I know the process here isn't ideal, but I am going to try to keep an open-mind about it! Regardless, I am doing this for the experience, and I know there are other places on this enormous campus where I can be happy.

And, to the members who said I would be happy at multiple chapters: Even after just visiting 21 party, I completely echo this sentiment. There are MANY girls in each chapter, and they are all different (yet bound together) in an intricate manner. I would be honored to be a part of any chapter here!

brighteyedgirl 12-04-2012 12:46 AM

I just realized that what I posted sounded REALLY cheesy. I just meant that there are great people in each house, and each house has a great combination of amazing girls that I would love to get to know better

kchaptergphib 12-04-2012 12:59 AM

Brighteyed girl, you don't sound cheesy, you sound like you are enjoying the process and keeping an open mind = ideal attitude for any PNM.
And ForeverRoses- hard copy, PAPER invite lists??!! You guys really are your own special snowflake recruitment! ;)
Looking forward to this thread & hearing more about FR; it's so different there!
oh, and GO B1G TEN!

that is what I was told- a hard copy PAPER invite list. The also do it online using Panhel's system, so I'm not sure why they want a paper copy, but they do! We also do this with the final bid list- we put it in the system, then print out a paper copy and drive it over to the Union to the panhel/greek life office.

I don't spend much/any time with the PNMs to know exactly why they dropped during 21 party, however this year my niece has a few friends going though, and I know one of them dropped when the realized that their grades were good enough for the panhel minimum, but that they were below most of the chapter minimums.

Also, this year's trend-- brown boots over the jeans. (last year Toms were quite popular).

Maybe so nothing can be claimed as a "computer glitch"?

PNM: "Oh XYZ must have dropped me because of a computer glitch, I'll just be horrible to the other chapters so I can get a snap bid later"

or, Member to Friend PNM: "Oh my gosh, Patty PNM, we totally invited you/your friend (package deal) back but the computer messed up our list!"

Hoosierxgirl 12-09-2012 11:15 PM

I'm a little late to the party (and I've been absent on these boards for awhile) but I just wanted to say good luck to brighteyedgirl! I can't believe this is my first year NOT participating in IU recruitment! If you have any questions about the process, feel free to PM me. I was a Rho Gamma and recruitment chair for my chapter so I have a lot of insight into the logistics.

As for the paper copies, I think it is just as GeorgiaGreek said. I know when I was a Rho Gamma we had to have THREE paper copies of the PNMs preference lists for each round (one for me, PHA, and the PNM) and also input them into the computer system. When in doubt, CYA.

ForeverRoses--brown boots over jeans is the trend for chapters or PNMs?

I thought boots over jeans was a pretty classic look? I never considered it a trend waiting to die. Now cowboy boots, those can die unless you are actually on a ranch/riding a horse/in Texas/all of the above.

DubaiSis 12-10-2012 03:50 PM

And in cold climes, boots are a practical and safe (literally; they can help minimize the instances of falling on your arse) option for adding some style to your winter wardrobe. This is not boots tucked into jeans in Miami or LA, which to me makes it ok. Now high heeled stiletto knee high boots make absolutely no sense to me. But then I have a thing about high heels of any kind with jeans. I just think it looks goofy, mismatched.

This was pretty standard for the PNMs. I didn't see what other houses were wearing, so I don't know if any of them were doing this as well. But I would say 1/3-1/2 of all the PNMs I saw were sporting this look. Saw lots of Toms shoes as well.

"In Tennessee" should also be added to that list ;)

AGDee 12-10-2012 10:05 PM

Hahaha, Hypo's Christmas list? Toms and brown boots. Apparently the same footwear is trending at Barnard.

Brown boots must be taking over the world. Last weekend I was on Michigan Avenue and saw a plethora of black leggings with brown boots. I am not a huge fan of mixing black and brown unless there is an accessory with both color in it.

Here is a photo from the IDS:

I guess you have two choices during rush, either sweating to death or freezing to death!

Why do they split it up between semesters? I think having first round right before finals would be very stressful and horrible to worry about over the break! If it was all in the second semester then you would have the grades in and everyone would know if they'd be a grade cut.

To conduct our recruitment with 21 parties prior to classes starting in January, it would mean that some parties would have to take place in December. I think there would be a mass revolt of sorority women if they had to come back before New Year's and spend NYE on campus with no dates. ;) It was bad enough the year we had to report during the evening of Jan. 1.

I think this year most of the actives will be back on campus the evening of Jan 1 this year. I know a couple of sororities moved around their moving day, so that the room moves are taking place before January so that they have a bit more time before 14 party.

I'm not sure where 21 party could move to- 14, 8, and 3 are already back to back.

Hoosierxgirl 12-13-2012 12:05 PM

21 Party in December is a whole lot better than when it use to be in OCTOBER! Now that's a long time to wait! Moving it to January would be a nightmare. I couldn't imagine doing 21 Party membership and then waking up for 14 Party the next day.

I completely acknowledge that the timing isn't the greatest (I read the IDS article earlier this week) but since recruitment dates are announced so far in advance, PNMs and members are encouraged to work ahead and get as much done as possible before recruitment weekend. I told my rho gam group to plan on doing nothing but attending recruitment, eating, and sleeping during that weekend. If something comes up with school like a Saturday exam, chapters/PHA will generally grant the PNM an excused absence and choose not to drop her.

Why would it mean that? Why couldn't recruitment just end later?

Classes.

PhiAlpha05 12-15-2012 12:15 AM

Best of luck! (FYI, I know exactly which school the OP is at--the number of sororities, rush timetable, and distinctive name of the first round gives it away--so if you're trying to keep it on the DL you might want to edit that stuff out)

We all know. :) That's why she won't be telling her actual story until AFTER rush is over.

We all know what school it is. The OP has stated she isn't trying to be secretive about it, we are just not naming the school in this thread so it won't be searchable. In any event, I can't wait to hear what happens! :)

PhiAlpha05 12-15-2012 12:35 AM

Ah, okay :) Well, if the OP's interested, I know a few alumnae/actives (of maybe 4-5 houses) and could ask them any questions you might have. (Some of them graduated a few years ago so the information might be a tiny bit out of date but maybe still useful) All seemed to have great experiences in their houses, so I'm sure you'll find a house you're happy with!

IndianaSigKap 01-02-2013 03:14 AM

Good luck to Brighteyedgirl tomorrow! Hope you have a great day meeting the women who will be your sisters in 5 days! Hopefully you will be able to share your story with us at the end of the week. Sending positive thoughts your way!
