Hazing during recruitment, now that is an interesting way to get new members.:P

For sure! A couple of Tallulah's sisters said we should say, "Oh, absolutely! They egg you as you walk in the chapter room door!" :D but given all the times that my kids saw the public hazing of the former local sororities at a nearby college, we decided to reassure her. We reminded her that she knows that sororities aren't supposed to haze their new members so why on earth would they haze PNMs?

Now we should have sent *Hazel* a note telling her to be sure and wear a raincoat as she entered the chapter rooms, though...

AZTheta 09-21-2012 10:23 AM

Carnation, that is just naughty.

FYI: I'm very testy (and annoyed) (and disappointed) with all the drama 'round here lately and would like to enjoy a good read without getting a headache or having people with issues trot them out and beat everyone over the head. Hoping for some aloha spirit in your thread.

Now that cracked me up.

So now we wait for invitations! In the meantime, we have some fine Hawaiian music to listen to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eKQrahj1IqU

-in memory of my Hawaiian mom, Dorohy Aiko Sumida--

AZTheta 09-21-2012 12:55 PM

Right back at you.

Missing aloha. Want to be there now. Sigh.

ETA: I know exactly where I was (eating an Ono sandwich in a little shop in Paia) the first time I heard this. Magical.

Mevara 09-21-2012 01:04 PM

Wishing Tallulah the best!!

carnation 09-21-2012 01:09 PM

oh! I love the Beamer music and I just realized with a shock that the guy in the video is Keola Beamer. He and Kapolo were these young guys who sang all over the islands when I lived there. If he's old, I must be--no, I won't say it!

Thank you, Mevara!

MaryPoppins 09-21-2012 03:11 PM

The name Hazel, brings this to mind: http://www.nbc.com/30-rock/video/haz...n-reel/1384226

carnation 09-21-2012 05:17 PM

We were hoping that she would get 4 invitations, though the RGs said that most girls wouldn't get 4. She has so many that she liked that she wanted another chance to see them. Aaaannnd--she got 4! So now I'll assign the names to them that I chose. She will attend:

HULA SKIRT:Tallulah loves their philanthropy and wants to be involved no matter where she pledges. She has 2 camp friends who are in other chapters of this group and she says that this is a group of very sweet girls.

PLUMERIA LEI:a legacy group! Turns out she was a counselor with one of the members last year. These girls are very involved on campus like Tallulah wants to be.

SCARLET ULI-ULIS:another legacy group! She met some of these girls on campus this week in various places. Her RA is one. Also a very involved group.

HAWAII ALOHA:she has known an active from this group for almost her whole life, plus many girls from Hawaii Aloha are in her major. She says they have such a tight sisterhood!

Parties are tomorrow afternoon, I think!

FSUZeta 09-21-2012 05:57 PM

2 legacies to return to!! Go Tallulah!

AZTheta 09-21-2012 06:06 PM

I'm rooting for Hawaii Aloha

"E ha'i mai kou mau kini lani e
Kou mau kupa aloha, e Hawai'i
Na mea 'olino kamaha'o no luna mai
E Hawai'i aloha e"

ASUADPi 09-21-2012 06:12 PM

Just to clear up my confusion, are their only 4 chapters at the school?

Carnation, how many different sororities is she a legacy to? (Just curious, I love hearing about families that have a large and diverse greek "life". I'm the only greek in my family).

carnation 09-21-2012 06:18 PM

She's a legacy to 5 groups. Her school has more than 4 and they've already gone through a few rounds of parties but we decided to start her thread when she was down to theme parties.

ASUADPi 09-21-2012 06:27 PM

Okay that makes sense.

At this point, the legacy groups have one last chance to cut her because if they take her to prefs, she should get a bid. She doesn't know this (big family discussion on Facebook: should we tell her? Why or why not?) And anyway, she might want to pledge one of the other two; she certainly likes them a lot!

So she knows nothing. We didn't tell daughter #6 about it during recruitment either.

I know you have a large family. I mean it's enough for a nation! How many children do you have?

carnation 09-21-2012 09:19 PM

13! 9 girls, 4 boys.

LouisaMay 09-21-2012 10:19 PM

Thanks for sharing your daughter's story, Carnation! So fun. I can't wait to see how it turns out.

(I know a 2 month old baby named Tallulah!)

MaryPoppins 09-22-2012 02:41 AM

Good luck to the Carnation Nation!

More Hawaiian music for our listening pleasure! I wanted y'all to see this one because the red and yellow hula implements that the dancers have are uli-ulis, like we've used for one of Tallulah's groups. Almost all I've seen are red with yellow centers but when I was at UH, each cheerleader had one a different color of the rainbow since the team was the Rainbow Warriors.

Good luck to Tallulah (love the name!).

I am visualizing filling out the Recruitment Registration paper and the tiny line they give you for putting down your legacies. The Carnation Nation must fill the tiny line with "see attached."

LOL! Well, we haven't done a paper application since the 5th daughter's rush in 2005 but on recs, we do have to squeeze in a lot.

Tallulah went to her 4 parties and loved them. Ranking will be very, very hard for her. She said as much and told us, "We're on our way from the last party to go do our rankings so I'm going to turn my phone off. I have to do this myself without any sister or friend input! I'll call y'all after I go to my pref parties tomorrow."

Yea for Tallulah and her strength! Although no one had called or texted her so far and given her any advice, she wanted to make sure that she did it herself.

lilybeth3 09-23-2012 11:54 AM

oooohhhhhhh...cannot wait to hear...please keep us posted.....such an exciting time....at least she knows how this works. wish she could be a Pi Phi......she will go where she is suppose to be...good luck!

lilybeth3 09-23-2012 12:01 PM

your hazing story (siblings telling her she would be hazed) kindergarten called my mother to come get me bc I would not socialize. she said, "my child???" when she got there and I was sitting alone on bench...told her I was waiting...for what?????? on my brother told me all you do first week of kindergarten was get shots.....I was waiting for the needles. mom about erradicated him!!!

carnation 09-23-2012 12:17 PM

HAHAHA! If I had been the kindergartener, I would've been hiding under the building so as not to get the shots!

No word from Tallulah. We don't know how she ranked and we don't know where she's going to prefs! All we know is that she hasn't seen Hazel since the first day.:D

lilybeth3 09-23-2012 12:23 PM

what roh???? wonder what happened there???? cannot wait to hear...know you are on pins and needles....or lots of leis as the case may be...please let us know when you hear something!!!!

carnation 09-23-2012 03:28 PM

Finally! A call! Tallulah went to prefs at:

FRAGRANT PLUMERIA LEI

and

SCARLET ULI-ULIS!

We don't know how she ranked the 4 nor do we know how she ranked these 2 today. Bid Day should be sooooo much fun!

Today's Hawaiian music:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c37TD6MRMZI :)

AZTheta 09-23-2012 03:33 PM

Oh Carnation, I love the Punahou School clip; it's so beautiful. Do they sing it each year at their graduation? That song makes me cry, I can't hardly sing it without choking.

Good luck to Tallulah!

SWTXBelle 09-23-2012 03:49 PM

TWO LEGACY GROUPS - Very exciting!

thetalady 09-23-2012 09:35 PM

So how long do we have to wait?? When is bid day?? So excited!

carnation 09-23-2012 10:38 PM

Bid Day is tomorrow afternoon!

legacymom 09-23-2012 10:42 PM

Can't wait to hear where she ends up. Hoping for Scarlet...

thetygerlily 09-23-2012 11:02 PM

Ooh both Pref options are legacy groups. If she gets a bid from one of the two, I assume that means no new groups added to the Carnation Nation?

carnation 09-23-2012 11:36 PM

That is correct!

carnation 09-24-2012 06:03 PM

Tallulah has a bid! :):):):):):):):):):)

I am going to wait for a member of her sorority to come and tell you where she's a new member!!!!!!!!!

groovypq 09-24-2012 06:06 PM

The torture!

txAOII_15 09-24-2012 06:07 PM

Hooray for Tallulah!

But um, pardon my ignorance but how will we know the sorority member is referring to Tallulah?

WCsweet<3 09-24-2012 06:07 PM

What? That's not fair. STOP HOLDING OUT ON US!
