Coffee (this includes frapps, mocha anything, cappucinio, etc) and anything even remotely coffee related. I love the smell and it always looks good but it just tastes terrible!

SydneyK 10-17-2011 03:46 PM

In high school, I went on a marching band road trip. One of the places we ate at along the way was a buffet-type restaurant with tons of salad toppings, one of which was caviar. One of the girls I was with thought they were mini blueberries and loaded up a plate of Nilla Wafers, ice cream and caviar. Her reaction to that first bite was a good indication that her dessert looked like it would taste good (for the caviar-ignorant) but tasted pretty yucky.

Mevara 10-17-2011 04:22 PM

I love the smell of hot dogs but hate the taste.
Every so often I eat one just to see if it tastes any better and realize they taste exactly the same as before... gross.

Same here. Only eat fresh tomatoes in guacamole with the slime removed and diced. Otherwise, can't eat them.

i wholeheartely agree with you! its just got a funky texture i cant get past.

to add to the list: eggs. they smell devine but the taste - ew! doesnt matter how you dress them they are funky tasting to me.

That is all.

Perhaps the one you ate didn't; my scrumptious fresh Gulf oysters DO.

I cannot get into pate. It looks like cat food. I've never tasted cat food, but I imagine it tastes - like pate.

I don't like the fuzz on peaches. Love the smell of them and taste of the flesh - can't stomach the fuzz.

DTD Alum 10-17-2011 09:02 PM

Hah, coffee and raw oysters are probably two of my favorite things in the world. My brother and I throw an oyster and champagne brunch for my entire extended family every Thanksgiving...the overwhelming majority of us scarf them down, but there is one family of four that can't stand them. Funny how that works.

For me it's onions. I almost throw up if they sneak onto my burger. I think they are slimy and disgusting. For some odd reason, however, I love toasted onion bagels...then again, I had them all the time as a child. Cooked/raw onions? No way in hell.

honeychile 10-17-2011 09:49 PM

I got over a lot of my food yucks when I realized that I was a texture eater. I love bananas, apples, etc - if they're sliced. If I have to take a bit of almost any fruit, I just gag!

For those who hate oatmeal but love the smell, try it either thicker or runnier. I simply cannot tolerate it when it's runny, but love it when it's thick.

I also think that sushi looks very pretty, but deep instead, I'm thinking, "bait." I think it comes from having seen bloody Tuna Nicoise Salad - o.mi.gosh. Never, ever again.

Ditto.

I will add to the list: beer. I have tried at least a dozen different kinds trying to find one that doesn't make my tastebuds cuss me out and all I can say is the colors are pretty. The closest I've come is a pretty blonde one with an orange in it. I made it 3 sips before calling it quits. I only wanted to like it because my friends all love pubs and breweries so I was always left out but I'm comfortable with it now. Especially if there is pear cider involved! :D

Leslie Anne 10-17-2011 10:47 PM

I had no idea that so many other people hate slimy tomatoes. I'm always pulling them out of sandwiches and burgers. Yuck!

I love seafood so I thought from the looks of them that I would love scallops. Nope. Hate 'em.

BraveMaroon 10-17-2011 11:13 PM

Not so much a yuck, but I tried Fried Oreos at the State Fair a few years back and was so disappointed.

Plain old Oreos taste so much better.

I keep trying mushrooms hoping that my palate will accept them - but they make me gag... it's a texture thing.

My wife thinks I'm crazy, because I don't even like the smell of peaches, much less the taste. Just can't stand them. Of course, that means there's more for her.

As for pate, surely cat food tastes better. It just has to.

Count me in with the ones who just won't do raw oysters, but smoked is a whole different story. Love them smoked.

I have tasted high-end cat food, and the turkey & giblets kind does indeed taste like pate.

amIblue? 10-18-2011 11:04 AM

Fresh tomato haters of the world unite!

Also, I agree with the poster who mentioned beer. It's just not for me.

I also am not a cheesecake/cream cheese fan. However, if the cheesecake is from somewhere like the Cheesecake Factory and has a whole bunch of other stuff in it to cover up the cream cheese flavor, I'm in. I will never forget the look of horror on my friend's husband's face (who is a native New Yorker) when I turned down the cream cheese on my bagel in lieu of butter.

I think I just realized that I have the palate of a toddler.

I love this thread for making me feel like less of a picky eater. Usually I'm the only one.

Most of the things I hate don't look good, like shellfish. (Yes, I know.) I mean, just look at a shrimp. The things that qualify for this thread for me are melons. I can't abide cantaloupe and honeydew, even though I love most fruit, they are aesthetically pleasing, and I do like cucumber-melon-scented bath products. I can eat fresh watermelon, but it's not really that great, either, and faux-watermelon candy belongs on that other thread.

Holy crap - cosign for the cantaloupe & honeydew. So pretty, so yucky.

Here's the thing - I have never considered myself to be a picky eater. I am now rethinking that.

I used to think that carrot cake was so pretty with the icing carrots when I was younger, but I hate the way it tastes. I also hate it when I'm at a cake related event and there is carrot cake....so disappointing. My parents wedding cake was carrot cake and I'm convinced that that's part of the reason they divorced.

Fondant icing! It makes cake looks so fantastic and even a little bit of it is toooo much!

Like lots of foods, not all fondants are created equal. I have had some very bad fondant icings and some very good ones.

Mandarin Oranges. I love all oranges except these. I have no idea why they creep me out, but I literally get the heeby-jeebies!

AlphaFrog 10-18-2011 02:18 PM

Peach cobbler and lemon chiffon...I want to like them both, but I just don't and would definitely not waste my dessert calories on them.

I don't like Mandarin oranges, either, but I think it's because they're soaked in syrup. I'm a fan of regular oranges.

dekeguy 10-18-2011 03:18 PM

Plain boiled okra! If it's in a Gumbo its great. If it's in a Curry its excellent. If it is fried it is OK. If it is just boiled and served plain I could never deal with the taste or the texture. Most guys don't like boiled okra and then I found out why. Few years ago a bunch of us were sitting around the UC drinking coffee and discussing whatever came to mind. One of the girls commented that she really liked Okra and was raised on boiled okra when she was growing up in Alabama. Another girl said, ''you can't be serious, boiled okra tastes like a BJ''! The guys just stared and the first girl got this horrified look and said, ''Oh mah gawd, you are right. I never thought of that. Ah think I'm gonna lose my lunch''.
We just couldn't stop laughing. After that boiled okra just wasn't on the suggestion list at the UC cafeteria.

I like carrots but dislike carrot cake.
I like fruit but dislike fruitcake.

Exception. I love bananas. I love banana pudding. :D

This is one of the least classy things you've ever posted. Makes me want to re-consider calling you pretentious.

Nope, nevermind. Still pretentious.

you and I are so much alike. I love bananas and banana pudding, too. Fruit cake is probably the most disgusting thing I've ever tried. I think giving someone a fruit cake as a gift any time of year is an insult, unless the person you're giving it to likes it with you having knowledge of it. Other than that, it's totally a slap in the face. lol

Fruitcake is just nasty.

I will never forget when I was a child that my mother would make these gross fruitcake cookies at Christmas. I cried and cried because she wanted me to leave them for Santa one year. I was afraid he wouldn't bring me any presents if I left him gross cookies. I believe she found some Oreos in the cupboard to placate me.

ETA: I would kill for some of my Grandma's banana pudding. She made it by layering vanilla wafers with sliced bananas and pouring this hot sauce over the whole thing. It was awesome. All pudding-based banana puddings, while good, pale in comparison.

Hilarious! I think it would be hilarious to see the look on someone's face if they got a fruit cake for a gift. I mean, I never understood why anyone would give out something that disgusting. They're not only disgusting to eat, they smell really bad, too. lol

Store-bought fruitcake is nasty. My mother's homemade fruitcake, on the other hand, was awesome.

As for bananas, I like them okay, but I just can't stand banana pudding, or anything else banana-flavored for that matter.

Well now wait a minute. '...anything else banana-flavored...'?? What kind of banana pudding are you getting that doesn't have real bananas? I wouldn't eat banana flavored pudding, but banana pudding? Practically heaven on earth.

Agreed on all counts. I don't really like shellfish, cantaloupe, or mandarin oranges. I've eaten all of them and I would eat them again to be polite but they are so not my thing. I do however love watermelon and honeydew.
