thetalady 09-01-2011 01:40 AM

WTF?? and I almost never say that. I am so confused that I can't follow this story at all anymore. Anyone able to put it into regular Greek rush terms for me? I thought we had gotten to Pref parties, but now I am not sure. Please type slowly, apparently I am not terribly bright tonight

ElieM 09-01-2011 01:50 AM

I think Bellatrix got to the round before prefs. Parvati & Ginny both preff'd (and therefore received bids from) Slytherin

ElieM 09-01-2011 01:51 AM

NOw, OP is looking at a different group that are not a NPC sorority

melindawarren 09-01-2011 01:59 AM

Oh, my. Sorry! I really, REALLY didn't mean to get confusing-in terms of anything. I just wanted to be ambiguous.

My two friends preffed. I was not invited to pref. I am now COBing another NPC.

Again, really sorry! My goal was not to throw people off-really-I just didn't want to give away too much.

ElieM 09-01-2011 02:04 AM

it's okay... we probably just thought the round where you got the one invite was pref, not the round before pref

ellebud 09-01-2011 02:11 AM

I pray for victory! There is something about a laid back recruitment........

DeltaBetaBaby 09-01-2011 10:53 AM

If I'm reading this correctly, your school has an NPC group that does not participate in FR. Well, that gives it away :-)

Please don't apologize! I just lost track. I know we were all pulling so hard for you, this it was a really unexpected twist. Good luck with COBing, fingers & wands crossed for you! Or is it bad to cross wands?

OPhiAGinger 09-01-2011 01:02 PM

I love the twist! Can you give us any backstory on Daughters of the Knights of Walpurgis? How were you not aware of them before? Were they using a cloak of invisibility?

melindawarren 09-01-2011 04:25 PM

Haha, thanks!

DeltaBetaBaby-erm, yeah, kind of. :) Just don't use the name in the thread and I'm fine.

thetalady-depends. What's the core of your wand? ;) According to Harry Potter Wikia, mine is dragon heartstring, so...

OPhiAGinger-I did know about the group's existence, but they don't participate in formal sorting, so I didn't understand how their process worked until Monday, actually.

typeakid 09-01-2011 06:06 PM

Good luck! And my university prediction from the being of this thread has been proven correct :) (Don't worry, I won't tell)

Football Fan 09-01-2011 08:50 PM

Thank goodness the powder blue garments were not selected. May you find much joy and happiness in your Knight's realm.

psy 09-01-2011 10:07 PM

Have you received a bid from knights yet, or are you still a PMN?

Keep us updated, please--this story is awesome!

melindawarren 09-01-2011 11:46 PM

I am still a curious witch in the realm of the Daughters of the Knights of Walpurgis (side note-it took me forever to think up nine group names, and I was able to just "accio" the tenth to the forefront of my mind! It's not one most people have heard of, but the Knights of Walpurgis are definitely mentioned in the HP world).

Side note: another sign-today, I was walking on campus, waiting to meet with the Daughters when some muggles from a Chinese news station asked to interview me about-what else?-Harry Potter!

So anyway, Cissy and I have been chatting about this a lot, and she said, "you know, I think you've been happier this week than last week." I think she's right! I seriously love how much I've managed to bond with the girls in a short period of time. We have so much in common and it just seems like such a diverse and happy place. :)

That's my update for now. Thanks again for all of your support! I love the GreekChat community.

DeltaBetaBaby 09-02-2011 12:05 AM

I've heard the Daughters have a ridiculously nice castle. Best of luck to you in pursuing this sisterhood.

ellebud 09-02-2011 12:44 AM

The castle of the Daughters, according mine, is gorgeous. And the chef is supposed to be amazing.

dukemama 09-02-2011 09:38 AM

I'm notoriously slow on the uptake when it comes to figuring out where PNMs are going through recruitment, but I think even *I* may know which house we're talking about this time. If I'm right, it looks like a great place to land. Best of luck!

*winter* 09-02-2011 01:32 PM

I absolutely love this story! So many twists and turns. I really hope it has a happy ending. Good luck :D

paw426 09-02-2011 01:37 PM

You are such a creative writer! I have loved following your story, and of course, I am rooting for a magical ending!

33girl 09-02-2011 01:46 PM

The best thing about this story is I feel like I have read all the Harry Potter books without having to actually do it. Whooooo hoooo!

You're not the only one. I'm definitely enjoying this story!

Great! Just know that Bellatrix Lestrange is actually a very evil witch. ;)

thetalady 09-03-2011 05:16 PM

So... where do we stand right now?? Any idea when COB will result in a yes or no? We are all on pins & needles for you!

*winter* 09-03-2011 05:52 PM

Yeah...I never do this...but I really would love an update (whenever that is possible!) Hope you are having too much fun to have time to respond :)

I've seen other people refer to a PNM as evil, but never the PNM herself. Refreshingly honest! ;)

Well, I've always been of the mentality that, evil and crazy as Bellatrix Lestrange may be, she is by far the coolest character in the Harry Potter series (not to mention Helena Bonham Carter, who is by far the coolest actress in the Harry Potter series!).

As for updates: at this point, I don't have much to add, except that some of the Daughters invited me on a trip to Hogsmeade with them, and I'm super-excited! I know, usually, Hogsmeade trips used to be reserved for the third year and above, but since the fall of You-Know-Who, McGonagall has been a little more lenient with that policy. I can't wait to go to Honeyduke's!

Also: spoke to Ginny (who is in love with Slytherin!) and learned that Parvati had to de-pledge. :( Her parents sent her a howler and told her that they didn't want her to be sorted-period. I owe her an owl (and I'll make sure to give her some chocolate frog cards, too. I have three Nicholas Flamel cards and she was just complaining that the lack of a Flamel card was the big flaw in her collection).

Things are also a little hectic around here because everyone is gearing up for a muggle holiday this Monday, but we won the first Quidditch match of the season, so I'm in a good mood!

Thanks again to everyone-just for having enough interest to read. :) I love writing about my experience.

amIblue? 09-03-2011 11:36 PM

Oh, best of luck to you! You are a fabulous writer and have demonstrated an amazing and mature attitude through this! Any group that extends you a bid should count themselves lucky!

DubaiSis 09-04-2011 01:17 AM

Your comment about Parvati demonstrates one reason among many why chapters who had to make big cuts suddenly end up with spaces to fill. I don't know if her chapter is at/above total, but if they aren't they will be looking for someone to fill that space either now or possibly in the spring. And I'm really sorry that had to happen to her.

TPA85 09-04-2011 02:10 AM

I can't say it's never happened, but I've never seen a recruitment story have over 9,000 views! Especially on that's currently in progess...maybe the ones that are bumped year after year but that's different.

Everyone's rooting for you!

ellebud 09-04-2011 02:43 AM

There is no question that MelindaWarren is a gifted writer. For that talent alone she would devoted followers. But I think that, despite the Harry Potter theme, the OP comes across as someone you want to know, and someone you root on to success.

(and I am so sorry for your friend who was forced to depledge by parental units.)

Good luck. Have fun on your trip! And to a good Muggle holiday to all!

melindawarren 09-04-2011 11:07 AM

It makes me feel so great to come on here and realize how many people are cheering me on. :) You can't possibly know this, but I spent most of my summer reading threads on here to pick up advice.

Thank you so much for sticking with me!

As a small thank you, I decided to go through and pick out some of my favorite funny fanfics to share (I could have picked the sappy ones with Lucius and Narcissa, but I figured funny was more appropriate), and I came up with these two:

1. The Annual Deatheater Beach Trip
2. Riddle-De-Dee: The Lord Voldemort Musical (this one's especially good if you like singing along!)

I didn't write these, but they always give me a laugh (yes, one of those creepy Bellatrix laughs!).

Anyway, I hope you all enjoy the muggle holiday this weekend and Lilith will help me report if anything happens!

carnation 09-04-2011 11:19 AM

I really, really love those fanfics!

Bless your heart (and I really do mean it nicely! You are much kinder toward Parvati that I would be in your situation. I can only imagine that you had a fleeting thought that had Parvati come to an understanding with her parents PRIOR to rush, that her spot in the pledge class could have been filled by another girl... maybe even you. I think you are a great example of a real friend :)

Thank you. My mom said something much like this, actually, but I just can't help but feel happy that Parvati found her place...and sad that it was taken away from her. It'd be like (muggle reference here) being a concert cellist and having a friend who's a concert violinist. You'd cheer for her if she landed that big symphony, because it's not really your thing, anyway. Sure, we're both girls, and we go to Hogwarts, but otherwise, Parvati and I are very different people. We weren't competition to each other; instead, we supported each other through the whole process. As soon as she got her bid, she owled me and said, "wish you were standing here, too!"

southbymidwest 09-04-2011 09:20 PM

melindawarren, you have a wonderful writing style and a kind and generous spirit. I truly, truly hope for all good things to happen for you. Would that the Daughters realize what a great addition you would be to their organization!

excelblue 09-05-2011 04:50 PM

Wait, correct me if I'm wrong, but don't all NPC sororities participate in formal recruitment? If there's one that doesn't, wouldn't they be an associate member or something? If that's the case, wouldn't it be the case that they're not NPC but just part of the college panhellenic association?

Hmm...

Maybe I'm slightly ignorant, but I don't actually know how this all works. :p Could someone who's figured out where Hogwarts is explain the situation without actually giving away the school name? I'm curious to know, actually.

WaterChild 09-05-2011 05:05 PM

I know what chapter and school this is. It is NPC, and they are a part of panhellenic, but they currently do not participate in formal recruitment. Instead, they hold their own informal recruitment right after formal has finished.

Good luck, melindawarren! I have enjoyed reading your story.

There are some cases where an NPC chapter, with the approval of their (Inter)National, does not participate in formal recruitment. They are still full members of the collegiate panhellenic. They are usually a much smaller chapter or perhaps do not have a house when all the other chapters do and usually feel that the money and time spent participating in formal recruitment would be better spent in informal recruitment efforts.

Exactly. You do not *have* to participate in formal rush to be a full member of Panhellenic. I'm sure they pay the same dues as every other chapter does, though.
