I have a silly question that's a little unrelated-
I've seen the term house mom come up a few times in this thread. I don't go to a school with houses, so the idea is a little foreign to me. Does she serve as an RA-type for the whole house? Are they usually an alumna of the chapter they serve?

AZ-AlphaXi 04-21-2011 05:31 PM

House moms (now usually known as House Directors) are usually employed by the house corporation to be the day to day manager of the house. This is usually in chapters that have large houses. In the "olden" days the house mom as the chaperone as well as manager. She supervises the staff, which may consist of cook(s), kitchen help/servers, house cleaning staff, and maintenance people. She is usually the one who plans the meals and does the shopping. She makes sure that everything is locked up at night.

Regarding being a member, each group has different requirements as to membership of the house mom. Again in the
"olden" days fraternities all had house mothers, none of whom would have been members. My grandmother was house
mother for ZTA at the University of Kentucky in the 50s and was not a member. The house mother we had in the 70s was not a member, however we did initiate her the year she retired.

When doing a campus visit earlier this year at Bama with my daughter, lots of girls were talking about DG coming to campus. Very exciting for DG and the Greek system.
And my that house will be beautiful..

Oh and Carnation the Tri Delts round house has serious foundation issues. So sad because it is very cool.

carnation 04-23-2011 09:25 AM

Oh! I hate that for Tri Delt! Is the Chi O foundation okay?

I think so the Chi O house looked beautiful from the outside. The only house my friend's daughter told me about was Tri Delt. She also had a Tri Delt friend that took my daughter to the house for a quick visit. I think the girls move out at the end of the year....

psy 04-23-2011 10:30 AM

On a related note, I wondered why the SDT at Bama is so small relative to the others. Even though they don't participate in formal recruitment, I figured they would have larger classes than they do, given how big Greek life is there. Is the chapter just smaller by choice?

33girl 04-23-2011 11:36 AM

I believe that they do retain much of the sorority's original Jewish focus.

You mean as in this spring? Will they rush out of a fraternity house during construction?

I had heard there were major roof problems, too, with the Delta Delta Delta house.
They're building an entirely new house in a different location, so I doubt they will permanently move out this spring and have a full year with no house...of course, maybe one of the other groups has already bought their house...we need Zillini!

Most Tri Delts I know hate the house! It is, however, unique and memorable. And really, a pretty structure.

Ah. Do you know if they have a house? I thought they did, but looking at their website again, I'm not sure.

Titchou 04-23-2011 02:17 PM

No, SDT does not have another house. Never have had another.

As for Tri Delta, they have a lot for the new house and had wanted to start construction this summer but lack of approval by the UA BOT may have pushed that out. The last I heard, only DG and AGD were in line for full approval.

And they've had issues with that house for years. The flat roof leaks a lot and there is no way to add on/reconfigure beyond what they already have. I'm sure they'll be breaking ground soon. They need relief!

carnation 04-23-2011 03:58 PM

I've always wondered what shape the bedrooms were in the Tri Delt house. We had round dorms at the U of Hawaii and the rooms were kind of shaped like a pie slice.

The colonization recruitment schedule is up:

8/14-8/15: Open House
8/18-25: Interviews
8/22 & 8/24: Info Sessions
8/27: Preference (Invitation-only)
8/28: Bid Day.

sweetmagnolia 04-23-2011 07:57 PM

Silly question about colonization- what do their quotas look like? I heard somewhere that a colony is allowed to take on more girls to firmly establish themselves, is that true? Do colonies take a good number of upperclassmen?

It depends -- sometimes they are allowed to go over total and pledge average chapter size, for example. I think most groups choose new members from all classes -- It makes sense, so they entire group doesn't graduate at the same time.

KSUViolet06 04-23-2011 11:15 PM

^^^Yeah, colonies will typically take a cross section of classes so that the make-up of the colony is similar to the other chapters on campus.

letmeknow0210 04-26-2011 01:58 AM

Speaking of Bama houses, apparently Alpha Phi is also getting a new house?

Also UA's sorority row is actually being expanded. DG will be one of 4 sororities with new housing. The university is currently tearing down 3 old dorms, which will be replaced with a street extension and new housing for Delta Delta Delta, Alpha Gamma Delta, Alpha Delta Pi and DG.

I wanna see what our house is gonna look like.

The DG house is BREATHTAKING! Absolutely gorgeous!

Titchou 04-26-2011 11:26 AM

ADPi is still working on their plans...last I heard in March.

Always AlphaGam 04-26-2011 12:21 PM

I know this thread is celebrating the new DG house, but since we're talking about new houses:

The new Alpha Gamma Delta house. The new houses on Magnolia Drive will rival the school president's mansion in size!

Tulip86 04-26-2011 12:23 PM

Breathtaking.

carnation 04-26-2011 12:33 PM

Que hermosa!

Titchou 04-26-2011 12:38 PM

Am so glad they added some detail. The first drawing I saw was quite plain. This is much more appealing!

FSUZeta 04-26-2011 01:03 PM

it will be lovely!

AnchorAlumna 04-26-2011 06:19 PM

Quoins do make a difference.
Very reminiscent of the current house.

DTD Alum 04-26-2011 07:12 PM

Hah are there floorplans for this one?

Titchou 04-26-2011 08:08 PM

My understanding is that they wanted to maintain the style of the current house.

LaneSig 07-27-2011 06:14 PM

Delta Gamma broke ground for their new house this past Saturday (7/23). Article discusses their colonization.

Future new house at Alabama...

This afternoon I spoke with a past president of the Tri Delta chapter at Univ. of Alabama about a business matter. She was happy to tell me how the plans were going for the new chapter house.

According to the plan she mentioned the chapter will remain in the present house until the new structure is completed. They will then be able to move directly into their new home. The chapter is so large they are in need of more space. She had only seen an architectural drawing of the new chapter house and amenities.

KSUViolet06 08-15-2011 10:49 PM

Bumping!

Here is the schedule:

http://www.deltagamma.org/media/reso...n_schedule.png

(Bama peeps, let me know if anything has changed)

Do we know how many are signed up as of right now?

Whoever above wrote that this will be like the NFL draft of sororities, you're right!

And whoever above wrote that they'd be fine without a house, you're wrong. Sorority life at Bama is incredibly competitive for both PNMs and the chapters. If a chapter tried to colonize without a house at Bama, they'd flop. BIG.

Uber impressive!

Greek Girly, I do understand what you mean about the fact that sororities to be competitive need a house -- in the long run HOWEVER, women do not pledge physical structures (houses) they pledge sisterhoods. I have seen amazing groups not only pledge quota but be EXTREMELY ( and I mean EXTREMELY ) competitive even without a house on campus' where other groups have structures.

Just sayin'

Not at Alabama they wouldn't...not happening there. For better or for worse, right or wrong, that's just the way it is....just saying....

100% agree.

This is a prime example of things that work on some campuses won't always fly on others.

KSUViolet06 08-20-2011 07:59 PM

^^^^Right.

bamamama14 08-21-2011 01:50 PM

I stopped by the scholarship room at Bryant-Denny yesterday to say hello to the Delta Gamma team. They had a lovely group of members and alums there. Several girls stopped by for interviews, and I understand they had all the interview times filled for yersterday. The members from Ole Miss are coming over for pref party next weekend.
My local rec girl interviewed yesterday, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for her.
Roll Tide and DG!!

KSUViolet06 08-21-2011 01:53 PM

So stragglers may not even get an interview? Interesting...

Can you imagine how wonderful it would be to be so hugely in demand? :)
