:o

I didn't even notice the Jason/Nosaj thing....I was trying to pronounce half those names.

A former coworker daughter's name is: Dashanique and she had a another baby and I don't remember her name but I do know that it is at least 10 letters. She said she liked the long names. Go figure

MsDetroit1920 01-10-2002 11:58 AM

My name is Kinetrai(Ki nee tray)....When I was little I used to hate my name...I wanted something pretty like Sabrina or Camille....When I asked my mom where she got my name from..she said that my aunt suggested Netrai(Nee tray) and she decided to at the Ki.......

*Thanking God that I'm not a man*

But then the girl name they chose was "Tiffany."

God was looking out for both of us. If I had been a boy my middle name was going to be "Barcardi". Yep, after the drink. My mom though it had a nice ring to it. I told her I know they had to be drunk to think of that crazy stuff!!

I also have a distant cousin who happened to be in the hospital having her baby at the same time my grandmother was in the hospital. My grandmother made my mother and me go see her (even though we had never met the girl--we knew her grandmother though). When we asked the baby's name she said "Tra... uhhh I mean Tre....naw...that ain't it. Here....It's on this piece-a paper!" We looked at her like she had lost her mind! How are you going to name your child something and YOU can't even pronounce it?!?!?! Her "reason" was one of her friends named him and she "forgot" how to pronounce it. "But it's pretty, though" I'm sure he will be one of those little kids that will get to school and not answer to his name when role is called because he has been called "Man" or "Peanut" his entire life!

My mom delivers babies too and the people that come in there and name their sweet innocent little babies...well, it should be called child abuse! She has personally seen people name their kid Female (Fee-mah-lay), Placenta, Vagina (Va-gee-nah), Clamidia (pronounced like Chlamydia), she had a family name their kid Sir so that every time they said his name, they had to say "sir"...oh and also Nosmo King (No Smoking). I had heard of the Oranjello and Lemonjello before! That's just crazy!

SigmaRhoyalty2K1 01-13-2002 02:19 AM

definitely interesting...

This one may not be as unusual as all of yours but, I have a friend that dated a guy named Highly Gorgeous! She just knew he was making it up until she asked for ID! Too crazy...

Y'all are killing me, especially that ghetto name list! :D

I've heard of the name "Female" (Fee-mah-lay) in a movie before. The rest are just plain crazy. Can you imagine naming your baby girl VAGINA!!! I don't care how you pronounce it, its still terrible!

Ok, who noticed that TyQuan's middle name is Jason spelled backwards?

Now if people would put that much thought into other aspects or their lives instead of saddling their kids with unpronounceable names, that the poor child needs a MBA to spell.

Now that you mention it, Virtual Violet.... *shaking head*

I remember reading a study done by a sociologist who came to the conclusion that the reason we (and more often than not, it's US) give our children these kinds of names is because we want our children to know that they're "special" and "different" in a world that will show them every day that they're not valued because of the colour of their skin. The same sociologist also believed that it had something to do with the fact of the death rates in African American communities, especially among young Black men - since your child most likely wouldn't grow up to be a doctor, lawyer, professor, or head of a major corporation, his or her distinction should come from the name you gave them. :(

I wish I could remember the scholar who did the study, but it was a long time ago that I read it.

Damn. That's all I can say. Oh, when will some of us stop hurting our children with those names?

If I'm blessed with kids (yeah, gotta find a husband first ;) :p ), they will not have a made-up name. And I don't care if they get clowned on the playground.

Ok, I used to work with this girl and her name was Dorcas (pronounced kinda like it looks...Dork-us). I used to call people that name in elementary!

I know a girl named Precious Pearl. And my great-aunts have some old names...Orrie and Azzie

My mother is a teacher. And, about five to ten years ago she had a boy whose name was JPXXXVASRE. There is no way to pronounce it. His whole name is actually J-P-X-X-X-V-A-S-R-E. He had no last name. The teachers at the schools just ended up calling him JP Johnson because his mother's last name was Johnson.

When one of teachers asked his mother why she had given him such an "unusual" name, she said that she gave him the first initial of each of her close friends' names. Now, couldn't she have arranged them in some order that was pronounceable.

Shamefully, JP was in middle school reading at a second grade level. We all speculated that his name had something to do with it since that is normally the first thing children learn how to read and spell.

There is a young girl at my old church with the same name; however, she spells it Arteisha.

This thread is a trip! I can't believe people can be so ignorant about naming their children.

I know someone who named their daughter: Edlicia (Ed-lis-cia)

I think my name is unique, but not like these people's names. My name is Delphanie-never heard it before.

I almost fell out...so of course, I had to play off my expression and said that fits your personality (mind you, I didn't know that girl for ten minutes!). Why did she ask me how?!! I told her that she seems very quiet, patient, observant, etc...basically BSin my way through it! Well, she said that EVERYBODY TELLS HER THAT! Whew...

i thought my name was unique (Shaterika) but i've heard of some others, i'm just the only one that i know of, that spells it like that.
My name has been prounouced wrong since forever whenever someone reads it that's why when i'm discussing my name, i'd rather say it than type or write it. :) ;)

As far as other names, i have a sister named Kemba and i don't know anyone else to have that name.
I have a brother named Chaka, don't know of any guys with that name.
My father was going to name me Wykitha, glad my mama named me instead, i'm already having problems with this name i have already. :)

My soror says that he is not old enough yet to realize the fatal flaw with his name so when she asked him how to pronounce it, he did so without batting an eye. I just ask, didn't she have any friends or family to point this out to her? I know that she may have been out of it when she named him, but they do give you 2 weeks to change it. I think that the teachers at his school should pitch in for a name change (at least hyphenate and change the i to y (Shy-thead). Poor kid. He will definately have to grow up "hard".

My only thing is this... why insist on giving your children these ghetto-fied names and then resort to the nicknames (usually even worse?)

I was working at the Boys & Girls Club this summer, and in just ONE FAMILY ALONE there was a Taw'Keythia (KeKe), a Zha'Coria (ReeRee), a Zha'Treyvion (TreyTrey) and a Sha'Latavia (TayTay).

Lady Zeta 08-03-2002 01:34 AM

A few interesting names I've heard:

In high school there was this girl named Treemanisha, we called her Tree for short.

Lemonjello
Orangejello
They were twins at the school I'm teaching at.

Last year I had a child in my class named:

Kia (yes after the car but they didn't say it that way:confused:)

Blessings, LZ

Believe it or not, this actually used to be sort of common many years ago in most of the country (especially the South) with a high percentage of black folks (maybe very poor folks generally). Folks named their sons Sir, Mister, General, Major, etc. to provide the respect they couldn't get anywhere else. Much like you indicated, someone would have to call him "Major," all the time, for example, which maybe the only time the boy/man would get any respect in the land of Jim Crow and segregation--whenever his name was called/said.

Of course, this has generally been out of fashion for at least a generation or two by now though, so to have seen it recently...

What has gotten into some of us?

CodeBlue_R3 08-16-2002 02:39 AM

Forgive there parents

I think it is a shame the lengths and extremes some parents take at naming there children, I wonder if they think of the life there children will live as an effect of there carelessness. My boyfriend and I have come to the agreement that all of our children (once we are married and start the our family) will have professional names. Some people may be offended and say that I'm biasing to a "white" society but regardless of what people think my children will be respected by there names and by the way they live there lives and quite frankly as a business professional who much respect do you think someone named "Ovary Alize" will get?

Some names I've heard of are:
1. William Williams (not all that bad, is acceptable)
2. Moet Alize (a little girl in DC)-I frown on that name
3. Dysheki (come on now what's up with that)
4. Ebony and Ivory (children of an interracial couple the lighter baby named Ivory and darker Ebony starting the children off with an early complex)
5. Breon (rhymes with Freon)
6. John Three (enough said)
7. Cassade Joy (was this thought of in the detergent aisle)
8. Lucifer (what in the?)-The devil himself huh
9. Macintosh (interesting but still not all that great of a name)
10. Bluejay (hey if Raven, Robin, Bird, and Crow are acceptable why not Bluejay)-What is really going on? (At least they call him BJ for short.
