It appears from the posts such as rebelgirl's that what you need to focus on is your grades, recs, resume, and conversation skills as those things will be the most important determining factors. Concentrate on making the best grades you can the rest of this year, and start looking for recs. Use opportunities that you come across to practice small talk with strangers and acquaintances so that you'll appear confident and competent during parties (this is a good skill to develop for anyone, as it will certainly come in handy on many occasions besides recruitment).

Thank you !
I am most likely going to get a rush advisor to help me out through this. I have pretty good grades and I am extremely involved in my community as well as my school so I have more than enough on my resume. The only thing I am worried about is finding people to write my recs. I am the first person in my family who actually wants to go greek and I do not know anyone who is greek other than my friends who just got through rush this year, and are being initiated these next coming weekends.:)

Yeah, this isn't an offensive topic. It is a typical topic. That little girl needs to calm down herself and figure out some things about herself before she even worries about Greekdom. That's my advice.

I wasn't offended; this is just a pretty common post topic we see around here. There's one a few months ago, and it might behoove you to read that one as well. I'm Black, and I joined an NPC sorority in college; my experience was very different because I came from the South and joined a chapter in New England. (For example, my chapter got my recs and didn't know what to do with them!)

Just read a few more of the threads that KSUViolet06 linked to. If you have other questions that aren't answered, then totally feel free to ask them. The "I'm a black girl, can I fit into an NPC chapter?" is a trope to which many of us are inured and answering it over and over can make us punchy. :)

Good luck!

Okay good (: As i said before I have never been on this site before and I didnt even think to search for post similar to what i was asking. I will look now though!

Thank you (:

I have no idea as to why you are such an angry post-er but I do not need you to refer to me as a "little girl," nor do I need your nasty words of "advice."

Ask women you know like teachers, people you volunteer with, and people at any religious organization you belong to. You'll be surprised, because you'll encounter some sorority women. Try searching through this site, too using the search function. There are a lot of useful threads about recs. Good luck!

I'm more amused than angry. Good luck in figuring yourself out before you even look to Greekdom to accept you.

I have to agree with her. I can't understand the need for extremely condescending posts towards a kid who is probably 17 or 18. Of course she needs to "figure herself out", she's a teenager. The rest of them do, too. And considering that even at these highly competitive recruitments, the groups selecting new members include a LOT of teenagers, she'll be just fine. "Greekdom" is composed of teenagers just like her, too.

Kid, exactly.

Kids don't get to tell adults to calm down. LOL.

Exactly.

In other threads, you all tell people to worry about college because you go to college to learn and not the be Greek. Well, I say to worry about yourself, and then college, and then Greekdom. You all are telling her about recs and stuff. LOL. She brought herself to Greekchat but Greekdom isn't what her thread's about, as far as I'm concerned.

Personally, I realize that I am a stranger on a messageboard. She's asked about Greek life and that's what I can help her with. I do not presume to imagine she needs or wants unsolicited life advice from me....or anyone else here.

Whatever. You come here and share your Imitation of Life story and you will not be able to control how we respond. Period.

That's correct. Only Dr. Phil has control over how she treats others.

clever..

but, I meant i can take someone saying yes they are racist or something along those lines.

what i do not need is some rude person sitting on their computer telling me that i should "figure my self out."

being blunt and being rude are two different things.

And I've been polite to you although I want you to shut the fuck up.
