KSUViolet06 08-23-2010 11:09 PM

The fact that I regularly used the Encyclopedia to do reports in elementary school and some of middle school.

I remember getting my first computer in 7th or 8th grade and taking 30 minutes to get online.

In middle school, instead of wanting a cell phone I wanted a pink motorola pager/beeper.

unicorn 08-23-2010 11:38 PM

I remember gas under a dollar.

My first car had an AM radio.

I went to a James Taylor concert in June and it was the BEST THING EVER.

People ask me to knit for their babies.

I prefer cursive.

When I was in elementary school, teachers made our worksheets on the mimeo machine.

I am 24 and a secret old lady.

Leslie Anne 08-23-2010 11:48 PM

My parents are in their 80s.

I now have to dye my entire head of hair to get rid of the grays instead of just the front. (And if you don't understand that...just wait, you will.)

I've started to listen to classical music because the other stations are "too noisy."

Preston327 08-24-2010 01:52 AM

Probably too young to be contributing to this, but eh I have my moments.

1. The fact that I can remember things that happened in 1995, which is when the current crop of high school freshmen were born.

2. I remember when the Oakland Raiders went to the playoffs regularly

3. I remember when the Raiders came back from LA

4. Watching NBC Nightly News cover the Balkans War

5. Y2K and the hysteria. Incidentally because I was young and afraid of the apocalypse I attempted to count sheep to get to bed that night and made it up past 10,000.

6. Next year will be a decade since I moved back to Florida

7. The fact that when I went back to Michigan in 2005 I asked people "is XYZ still there" and they had no recollection of it.

8. In a year's time I'll be halfway through my undergrad.

The fact that to my younger cousins, iPods/mp3 players have always been in existence.

Yeah, what's up with that? I usually write in cursive, and I graduated in 2009. I have one friend (who's 2 years older than me!!) who confessed that he can't read cursive so I have to print for him. I don't have terrible handwriting either. Ugh!

I stopped writing in cursive in high school (in the 70s), as soon as my teachers said I didn't have to anymore. My cursive is horrible.

But FWIW, both of my kids have had to learn cursive in elementary school, so it is still taught.

I felt really modern when I got a Kodak Disc:

http://retrothing.typepad.com/photos.../kodakdisc.jpg

I don't remember my first camera, but I definitely had a disposable flash bar.

http://www.dlbrittain.com/Flashbulbs...lash%20Bar.jpg
The only difference was that mine wasn't horizontal. It was VERTICAL, so the camera plus flash ended up being taller than my head! I distinctly remember the smell of the flash bulbs as they burned out.

I feel older when I think about being born in the 1970s and all the history that has passed since that time. But, I don't feel old by any means. I'm still a youngin!

Alumiyum 08-24-2010 09:51 AM

Might not be old in the scheme of things, but being 23 (24 in less than a month) and a college graduate around people who are just turning 21 makes me feel old. Most of my friends my own age went to grad school elsewhere, so only my younger friends are left and it does get old being the mom all the time.

I know, right? I'm glad people who are older than I am started posting!

I do not feel old AT ALL. Why would I? I'm still in my 20s.

southbymidwest 08-24-2010 10:21 AM

I saw ads for the new Hawaii 5-0 tv show. I remember the old Hawaii 5-0 show. Sigh.

NutBrnHair 08-24-2010 02:51 PM

I think this qualifies...

One week shy of my 49th birthday, I receive in the mail an AARP card.

PeppyGPhiB 08-24-2010 04:40 PM

During a convo with two coworkers last week...
Coworker 1 (to Coworker 2): "Sometimes you feel like it, sometimes you don't."
Me: "Yeah, and sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't."
Coworker 2: (laughs)
Coworker 1: (WTF look on her face)
Me (to Coworker 1): "You have no idea what I'm talking about, do you..."
Coworker 1: "Nope!"

Jen, I had a Kodak Disc too! Got it for my 9th birthday. :D

My baby started high school yesterday.

My middle baby turned 18 today and starts college in a few weeks.

My oldest baby turns 20  on Friday.

You remember the "old" Hawaii 5-0...I remember our first TV with an oval screen...and I watched "Howdy-Doody".

Shellfish 08-27-2010 09:40 AM

I went into a music store yesterday, and as I was browsing, a twentysomething who worked there asked if I needed help. I explained that I was looking for a Bauhaus CD, so he asked, "Like the school of architecture?"

AlphaFrog 08-27-2010 09:57 AM

We were having a particularly good inning at bat, and I said "Lost Boys, we got 'em on the run!" and a few of the kids* on the softball team had no idea what I was referencing.

*and by "kids" I mean teens & college-age.

DaemonSeid 08-27-2010 10:03 AM

I remember having a convo one time with a woman who was upset that she felt pressured to get a cell phone for her 12 year old daughter because she is outside so much with her friends.

Heh

Hey, I'm impressed that a twentysomthing working in a CD story (they still have those?) knew what the Bauhaus school was. And you could have answered "Exactly like that. They named themselved after the Bauhaus school of architecture." :D

AnchorAlum 08-27-2010 01:49 PM

HA! You're all babes in the woods, I tell you...mere pups.

I started college when we had Hair Dryers that looked like a cone shaped communications device from outer space, and we listened to The Lovin Spoonful, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Smokey Robinson, Otis Redding, and Junior Walker and the All Stars on our "hi-fi" in the sorority house.

By the time I graduated we were rockin' it to the Doors and Jimi Hendrix.
I had a serious collection of hip hugging bell bottoms. And hair in a long center part flip.

I can remember the entire opening song from the Mickey Mouse Club. ( I usually just hum that until I can remember my children's names. That's so I don't have to say "Who are you people and why are you here?")

Seriously, I can still remember the phone numbers at the DG House at FSU. And the street address. I can't remember MY address, but I remember 143 North Copeland. And the moment I opened up my envelope on Bid Day.
And it still brings a smile to my face!

-The transition from the old folks saying "Boyfriend? What do you need a boyfriend for? Focus on your studies," to asking "So when are you going to get married?"

-Went through the calendar with my students on September 11th and realized that they hadn't been born yet on 9-11-01.

-The fact that my students don't know its special to have a Black president- it's the first presidency they remember.

-Having to explain to the kids why I draw TVs with "two little sticks on top" (antennae).

-My profession in general.

Did you tell them about black and white TVs?

what about these:

Kids I used to babysit are graduating from HS now.

PiKA2001 08-27-2010 02:55 PM

^^^^^
I would kill for that turntable!

I was at Urban Outfitters last month and the place seems so juvenile to me now. I used to love that place when I was in HS and college..... now I can't see myself buying anything there other than record frames.

LucyKKG 08-27-2010 03:56 PM

I know this is literally the exact opposite purpose of this thread, but I'll post it here anyway. I'm subbing today and couldn't find the woman to give me my sub folder. Someone else was kind of helping me and called me "that girl" when talking to someone else. Ughhhh! I know I'm only 23, but have a little respect! I've also subbed at this school many times, so I know what I'm doing.

MUSK81 08-27-2010 04:13 PM

For me, it was looking at the Bid Day Photo thread and realizing that my son is the same age as the girls in the photos!

In Galveston, my sons saw an English red telephone booth on The Strand. "Harry Potter!" they squealed as they opened the door and confronted - a pay phone. A pay phone with a cord. "What is THAT?" they asked, and I had to explain that there was a time when all phones had cords, no one had cell phones, and it was very important to have a quarter with you at all times. Sigh.

Ohhhh my. Reading this thread has made me feel old!

- The PNMs posting recruitment threads today were born in the year I pledged, give or take a year.
- I went through rush. I was a rushee. Later, I was a pledge. A few years later, I was a rho chi.
- I haven't been carded in years. Not getting carded used to be a good thing.
- When I was a small child, we had a TV with two dials - VHF and UHF. No cable and no remote. My dad used to sit on the floor and "flip" through the seven available VHF channels (2,4,5,7,9,11,13).
- I've actually used a record player.
- Y2K was a legitimate concern. One of my assignments at my first job out of college was addressing Y2K issues. This is why I can program in COBOL.
- I remember when people dressed up when they flew - and not just business travelers who had just come from, or were going straight to, the office or a client meeting. When we went on vacation, my dad always wore a suit.
- I've used film cameras and developed B&W prints.
- I didn't get a cell phone until I graduated from college. It was a brick. My first cell phone plan included 20 minutes a month.
- My family's first computer (bought when I was in 7th grade) was an IBM PS/2 that ran some flavor of PC-DOS. My first computer of my very own ran Windows for Workgroups 3.11. My first printer was an HP LaserJet 4p - which I still own and use 17 years later. (This was from the old days when HP made solid printers.)
- When I was a kid, Star Trek: TOS's special effects were state of the art for a TV show!

*goes off to look for her walker*

honeychile 08-28-2010 11:43 PM

I can still tell you the name, address and birthdate of the sister whose cards I usually used to go to a (ahem) drinking establishment. We could do this because nobody's photos were on their driver's licenses! I also knew to say "New Year's Eve!" instead of December 31st.

KSUViolet06 08-28-2010 11:47 PM

Hearing new members and newer collegians refer to Forever Sigma (old NM ed program) as "oh the old new member program from a long time ago."

We only introduced the new program in 2005ish. Seriously.

Also, the fact that college freshmen and HS kids are throwing 90's-themed parties like my generation throws 80's parties.

Hearing my middle school aged cousin refer to Clueless/Buffy/etc. as "omg why do we have to watch these REALLY OLD movies?"

jennyj87 08-29-2010 12:05 AM

My cousin got in the car and sat in my back seat. He asked me what the twirly thing did.

It was the knob to roll the window down.

I work with an entire group of guys who never saw ET in the theater. Because they weren't even in utero when it came out.

We also had to explain why we called a co-worker Magnum the day he wore a Hawaiian shirt.

Oh well, at least I'm a friendly fossil.

Ok - I gotta ask (though I think I don't really want to know) - what do 90s themed parties entail? Do they all dress like Zach and Kelly and head down to The Max?
