OK, I just have to say this. There is no such thing as a gray tux. Dinner jackets come in black for winter and white for summer. Bow ties only.
Dinner jackets are NOT worn before 6 PM at the earliest. Gray, green, orange, brown, or whatever are worn by the band leader and his people.
Very Formal evening wedding = full evening dress (white tie and tails).

If it is to be a formal daytime wedding it is full morning coat and waist coat with stiff collar shirt and long tie, not an ascot, which is worn with an open collar shirt and blazer.
Semi-formal is a short morning coat (sometimes called a stroller or directors jacket) with a turn down collar and long tie. Lot of leeway in the waistcoat with a short morning coat.

Informal is a suit with business shirt and tie.

Casual is anything from a blazer to whatever.

Note: Deep South in warm weather. White linnen suit, with or without waistcoat, white shirt, long tie. Can be worn day or evening. Old tradition in New Orleans.

If its your wedding you choose what you want. Just don't call it something it isn't and don't wear the wrong rig at the wrong time.

The eleventh commandment as handed down to gentlemen since time immemorial!

If I weren't engaged, I'd say that I love you!

I'm freaking out. Two of my bridesmaids' dresses haven't come in yet, and the wedding is less than three weeks away!

Yikes indeed! Have you talked to the store? Maybe there was a mix up at the designer's end (happens.)

Wow, I didn't realize it was that soon. I think I lost a couple months this summer. I'm kind of a planner for the apocalypse, so here's my suggestion:

Since you're near the Nordstrom Mecca, do you think you would want to find some dresses they carry and get them collected in the event the dresses don't show up? I can't remember if you're attendants are wearing matching dresses but at least you would have something on hand. I know there are even seamstresses in store so you could have the dresses there and bring your ladies down if things are cut close, with the same day turn around.

Yay for customer service and a generous return policy!

Just out of curiosity, when did you tell the store that the wedding was? One of the first things I learned while my friends & I were getting married was to tell the store that your wedding is at least three weeks prior to the real date!

If I remember correctly, I think Peppy said her maids are all wearing a different dress in the same color and designer. Either way, it's good to at least think of an appropriate back-up for them.

Where is a good place to go and try on dresses? We can't really buy online because somoe of us have unique physical shapes. We all need dresses in the same color except the MOH and David's left us more than wanting. Are there any other chains or stors people can recommend? We live in a ginormous metropolitan area. Thanks.

KSUViolet06 09-28-2010 09:45 PM

Department stores are good if the bride isn't dead-set on everyone lookind identical.

Ex: she could just say "any halter black cocktail dress in cotton" and you could all find something on your own at Nord/Neiman/etc.

Other than that, where to try on depends on whether she's interested in certain designers, what's close to you, what you all can afford, etc.

We found out today that one of the dresses will be in next week. But the other store can't get a status update from the manufacturer, they say. The dresses were ordered in the beginning of June, and we were told they'd be in within 12 weeks. That has come and gone. The dress that is still MIA was ordered just two days after three of the other maids ordered theirs, and they got theirs a month ago. We're wondering whether the store really ordered the dress.

My bridesmaids are wearing three different styles of dresses, but same designer, fabric and color. There's no way we'd be able to find any dress in a dept. store that would match, plus the one dress that is MIA is in a larger size, which complicates things. This bridesmaid is in Tallahassee, so they don't even have the same department stores there that they do here. At this point we're all just keeping our fingers crossed that the dress comes in!

If you have a Jessica McClintock store by your house, they usually carry bridesmaid's type dresses and the quality is good. Also, Talbot's and Laura Ashley are usually good. Depending on the color needed, Target carries bridesmaid dresses but I don't know how good the selction there is. :)

As a back up plan I'd call the manufacturer/designer and see if a dress in the right size, fabric, and color existed anywhere and get the name of that store in the event of emergency. The brand is carried at a store in Coeur d'Alene and two stores in the Portland area, where I will be in less than two weeks. If they have it there I will go personally pick it up and get it in the mail or brought to you via someone who is headed to the west side in time for the wedding.

If they foul this up I am sure KSUViolet and I can cut them and knock them out with a zucchini.

Impression Bridesmaids

I'm thinking about the dress on the left, in either that purple color or another shade (if available) for my bridal party.

I LOVE the dress on the left. I want one! Like the other one, too!

Well, when they say the store "carries it" they really only mean they have sample sizes there to try on, then they'll order the dress for you. You can't buy it off the rack. Two of my girls ordered their dresses from a local store here. But there's no way a store will have one of these dresses in stock or even as a sample in the bridesmaid's size.

My fiance found a store that somewhat specializes in planning a wedding. They pretty much could tell her all the stores in the area that do dresses. You may want to see if there is a place like that in your area.

I'm really hoping we can incorporate a shade of brown into our colors. I so am loving tan or chocolate suits. Season dependent of course.

I am well aware dresses are usually made on an order basis, but some stores do have samples for sale, an order was wrong, never picked up, wedding canceled and so on. You could get lucky and get what you need.

Our (November) wedding was almost exclusively brown. The girls carried bouquets of wheat. The guys had black and brown ties, black suits. The girls had brown dresses too. Getting married in the almost-winter time was hard to pick "colors"...while I love the bright pinks and the blues and what have you, they look summery and gardeny to me and more appropriate for a wedding in the summer/spring, not almost winter in PA.

Bridesmaid dress update

I am soooooooo pissed right now. The dress boutique - The New Image, in Thomasville, GA - says the manufacturer cannot ship the dress until 10/14 at the earliest...for my 10/16 wedding. So, too late.

The only solution they're offering is to 1. Get our money back; or 2. Have fabric shipped from the manufacturer to arrive Monday, at which time a local tailor can make a dress for my bridesmaid. But even in that case they aren't giving a full refund. We are going with option 2 for now, but you can bet we are going to get our money back. I don't think the Jim Hjelm folks would be happy to hear that one of their retailers has offered to make a copy of their dress.

Again, none of us believe that the store ordered the dress when it was supposed to have. If any of you can track down a phone number for Jim Hjelm corporate, I'd love it. I've tried looking but haven't been able to find the right number.

ETA: Found a customer service number, but they can't disclose order info. due to contracts they sign with retailers. But the rep told me, "I'll just say this...there's no reason why the dress would take that long. It would not take that long to get one of our dresses."

Roughly yes. Just slightly darker...and with a better tie. I'm super picky about ties.

FSUZeta 10-11-2010 08:09 PM

has anyone seen any gold bridesmaid dresses? sort of a mustardy gold? my daughter is starting to plan her wedding and one of her favorite colors is mustard gold, but i am afraid that we might not be able to find that color-it was a hot color a season or two ago.

KSUViolet06 10-12-2010 12:51 AM

Gold is hard to find. One of my sorority sisters wanted to do a similar color and she had to go with yellow because she couldn't find anything closer to that (like a goldy mustardy color).

FSUZeta 10-12-2010 07:17 AM

that's the color my daughter would like. i have looked on so many sites that my eyes are crossing- but nothing in that color range at all. must not be the "it" color anymore like it was a year or two ago.

thanks, ksuviolet.

honeychile 10-12-2010 08:23 PM

There are so many shops on ebay which will make a dress to your specifications, although I've never tried them. Here's one color palette:

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/r...3/db17a81e.jpg

Just put in bridesmaid dress and look for the custom made ones. Again, I have no idea of the quality, but they seem like they'd go for any style or color. Good luck!

FSUZeta 10-12-2010 08:28 PM

thank you!

That's it! #11!!!! That's the color I want for my (very far in the distance) bridesmaid dresses!

By the time I get married, it'll probably change but it's nice to see that color exists somewhere outside of my mind. :o

It's Alfred Aneglo. Style 7007. The best part about it was the fact that it was affordable, and I'll be able to wear it again if I go somewhere that dressy.

I really like the purple one.

Has anyone seen the twobirds dresses on "My Fair Wedding" with David Tutera? My MOH and I went and looked at some dresses today, and she tried on the two birds dress. This dress is so versatile as it can be wrapped so many different ways and look like completely different dresses. I thought it was cute!

Like I said...these are all the same dress and it can be wrapped to look good on everyone! You can get them in long and short and in lots of different colors!

I love both of these and am showing them to my daughter! They are so gorgeous!!!

DoubleTDG 10-31-2010 03:35 PM

I was in a wedding recently and we wore this in apple red.

The dress was nice but I had to spend $80 altering it because I'm short and have a chest that is a size 0 in David's Bridal but my hips caused me to get a size 6 dress. Because the dress was somewhat form fitting it was a little hard to sit in.

joliebelle 10-31-2010 04:43 PM

Dreamful, I was thinking about doing the Two Birds dresses too. I did some research on them, and apparently the dress doesn't look good on people above a size 8 or so. Also, you'd have to go backless in alot of the dress styles, and that won't work for a lot of women.

Since you got a chance to see the dresses, what was the quality of the material like? Is it worth the money?

On "My Fair Wedding" they have had plus-sized girls in these dresses and I thought they were flattering. The material is the real question ... it's not typical "formal attire" fabric but I haven't seen that in person. All I know is that they can definitely be altered to be flattering to all body types.

It is a very flowy (sp?) material, possibly satin, and my MOH who wore it thought it felt more like a nightgown than a bridesmaid dress, although we did like how versatile it was.

Update!

Wedding was on October 16 and all of my ladies looked beautiful. Was it because this MIA dress came in? No. It was because my bridesmaid was able to get David's Bridal to find a dress in the same fabric and nearly same color in her size at one of their stores in NY. They shipped it to her overnight, and when she put it on along with the rest of my bridesmaids, you couldn't even tell it was a different designer or color! I can't believe I'm saying it, but DAVID'S BRIDAL TO THE RESCUE!
