I've never heard a SINGLE good thing about a high school sorority. In my experience, they're haze-fests. If a PNM mentioned that, I would think that she was a). a poser and b). probably not someone of high moral standards.

I'd be hesitant to mention it. There aren't really any high school sororities that are well regulated (or even regulated at all)...right?

Depends on your area. In mine, high school sororities do a LOT of volunteer work. Officers have a good bit of responsibility. So...it depends.

Community Service and Volunteer Activities- Diamonds in the rough- Church group volunteered at nursing home where we held events for them like purse day, and held church service for them.

This is good right?

Yes, that is good!

Shermanyh and other pnms -

I like the way you are explaining the activities on your resume. I don't know what format you are putting it in,but I suggest bullet points and concise statement. Make it easy to glance at and see the highlights.

Honors-
*Student of the Day: awarded the honor twice; recognized as outstanding student by faculty.
*Cardinal Caught Caring: awarded to those recognized for performing random acts of kindness.
*Human Anatomy honor student - only student in senior class to receive this honor.

These are just examples but a good place to start.

Tri-Hi-Y has been around for a long time - my mother was in it. It's affiliated with the YMCA, and has multiple chapters across the country. I'd hardly call it a sorority, unless the members at a certain school attempt to make it one.

Interesting.

It was definitely listed as a sorority with the west Texas girls. Every rush application from that area would have "High School Sorority- Tri Hi Y."

I don't think we ever pledged any of those girls so my knowledge ends at the rush application.

ComradesTrue 07-14-2010 09:35 PM

I agree that it may be regional.

I grew up in Texas and attended a Texas school with a competitive recruitment. Recs were an absolute must, girls were dressed to impress, yada, yada. West Texas, namely the Abilene/Midland/Odessa area, had (has? unsure...) a high school sorority called Tri-Hi-Y. To be honest, we found the whole thing humorous and at least for my chapter this was not anything that scored a PNM any extra consideration.

Quick question about photos. I have naturally curly hair but in all the photos I have of me (well the ones I would consider sending in) its flat ironed/blow dried straight. Is it still okay to send one of those in even though I don't think my hair will be flat ironed for rush cause of the humidity and time involved?

I think it would be fine to send in a picture with straight hair. You'll have name tags on during recruitment, so they'll figure it out.

I know sometimes PNM's say, "Well I just didn't join any clubs or anything in high school." What about church, camp, volunteer activities, hobbies you're passionate about, etc.?

So we're thinking that if she was such a big deal in the church, why can't she spell it and of course it became a running joke in the PH office.

*For GC oldtimers who may remember this: this was also the girl whom people were calling "Bubbles" because her application picture had her in a feathery pink wrap with bubbles behind her. For that matter, y'all, don't be the girl with the really weird feature (like a pit bull or a huge hat) in your photo that people remember so well that you pick up a nickname.

Somewhere on GC there's a thread that discusses odd recruitment applications.

We had one girl send in a picture of her lying on a purple shag carpet in this fuzzy pink jacket, with loud, caked on make up. It really truly looked like it might be from the set of a porn right before the clothes started coming off. She was famous for that picture before she stepped on campus, and in real life she was very cute, very sweet, and very conservative. No fuzzy pink sweaters or ridiculous make up. Fortunately her first choice laughed off the pictures and she became a great member but...what in the world was she thinking?

We've also had PNM's send in what appears to be their entire modeling portfolio. Really we only need one picture. REALLY.

AXOrushadvisor 08-11-2010 09:09 AM

I think the picture you send in is really important. I have seen it all in 20+ years. A couple of memorable ones: the girl who sent the picture in that we called the "negative" super, super tan and white blonde hair the photo actually looked like a negative (for all you young gals that is what cameras used before being digital! ha!), girls drinking in their pictures, yes! I guess they have bought into the only thing sororities do is drink and party I'll show them I can hang;) The best ones are the 8x10 glamour shots that have been airbrushed and look NOTHING like the girl walking through the door. Ditto on the sending of 10 different pictures. Send us one quality picture that looks like you.

We've gotten a few "negatives", which confuses me since they all appeared to be senior portraits and whoever took the pictures should've done something to tone down the contrast. Eesh. One year a girl sent in a picture of herself that had obviously been taken several years before because not only did she appear to be about 13, after looking at it we saw there was one of those little gold stamps in the corner with the studio's name and the year it was taken. She was actually 13 in the photo! Of course, she looked very different when she walked through the door.

The point of the photos is for face recognition, so there's no point in sending in something that isn't what you look like day to day.

pictures

One of my favs from a few years ago...PNM stretched out on top of a grand piano in a formal dress. Turns out she was very musically gifted, but she was known as Piano Girl during recruitment.

Also hate when there are 3 girls in a photo...unless you circle your head how do we know who is the PNM?

Loyally Kappa 08-11-2010 10:32 AM

This may be off topic, but PNMs and their mothers ought to think carefully about who they ask to write a rec for them.

For example, when my oldest daughter was a senior in high school, she was in charge of decorating for the back-to-school dance. During the decorating, she called me to see if it would be okay for Miss X to spend the night after the dance rather than driving back home. (Private school ... Miss X lived about 45 miles away.)

Well, Miss X apparently imbibed a bit at the dance, and when it came time to follow my daughter home in her car, coming into my neighborhood, she swerved off the road and hit a brick mailbox. Said mailbox was splayed all across the victim's front yard. But rather than stopping (her car was badly damaged and the right, front wheel could no longer rotate), Miss X continued to follow my daughter (who was unaware of what was going on behind her) to my house, leaving an 8 inch black skid all the way from the victim's house and which eventually ended in my driveway.

There is much more to this tale ... and it gets downright humorous when I recount how this was the only night in my entire life when I have slept with a drunk chick. Suffice to say that it took all my powers of zen to not allow my eyebrows to shoot up over the top of my hairline when her mother approached me for a rec the following spring.

Sigh ...

About photos - I would suggest the same thing that actors are told when getting head shots - make sure that it looks just like the person who is walking through the door at an audition. If you follow this suggestion, it should prevent you from doing anything crazy in the photo, or in making some big change to your appearance "just for recruitment". Enhancements, yes, complete makeover, no. Just be the best version of "you" that you can.

33girl 08-11-2010 01:15 PM

What about black & white? One of my friends is a photographer who works primarily in black & white - and her pictures are gorgeous and make everyone in them look gorgeous. If you have pictures from an "arty" setting like this, are they acceptable? Or should you skip them and put a plain old color photo by Mom in your packet instead?

AXOrushadvisor 08-11-2010 01:17 PM

I just got done going through applications that have been processed so far for recruitment. I am amazed at the amount of sophomores going through recruitment. I am, however, more astonished that the majority of them have listed no college activities, leadership or community service. Sophomores wonder why they get cut so hard on this board all the time? I think next time I'll ask what they had on their applications and resumes.

BAMA2 08-11-2010 01:21 PM

All the girls from my kids school just use a smaller version of their senior pictures. They do them in regular clothes (no gowns) so they just look like very nice, tasteful pictures. It really never occurred to me to use anything else.

Fine line. As ree-xi said, this is a way to recognize a girl when she walks through the door. So if a black-and-white photo is too high contrast, at a strange angle, only showing part of the face, etc, it doesn't translate to easily recognizable.

On the other hand, when you're watching a slideshow of a couple hundred headshots, or brushing your teeth to see posters of pnms staring back at you, a black-and-white shot really stands out amid a sea of color portraits.

I say if it looks exactly like you and shows your full face, go for it. If your rec writer went to your school, it never hurts to ask their opinion on which photo to use.

rlg327 08-11-2010 09:59 PM

I just sent in a picture taken of me casually, it's actually a pretty small photo, just of my head, and isn't a professional/high-quality photo...is this bad? It looks like me and everything, I didn't know it should've been something more professional.

I can't imagine it would matter much either way as long as it's a good enough quality photo that someone who has never met you could recognize you.

Re: black and white...if you're still easily recognizable, why not? Actually, it might be a way to purposefully stand out.

ree-Xi 08-12-2010 04:49 PM

I personally wouldn't use Black and White. It looks dated and it's harder to recognize people because a lot of the details are muted. What are the first things people mention when describing someone? Usually hair color is at the top of the list, along with skin tones (even distinct ones such as "porcelain" or "olive") - things that are hard to tell in B&W photos.

If the purpose of the photos is to recognize a girl right away, a B&W isn't your best bet (again, something that actors deal with).

If it's an artsy photo it probably won't look dated, but the point about hair/eye/skin color is a good one.

Though if it's either very, very blonde or very, very dark brown/black that would still be evident in the black and white photo.

Ucacheer2213 08-18-2010 04:54 PM

I remember i did not put my GPA ( I though they meant college GPA which i did not have yet ) I did not get a bid. Lucky i was able to COB two weeks later, and got in to the sorority I wanted. :)

greekxgal 08-19-2010 02:37 AM

I sent in a black and white pic... I hope it'll be OK! I didn't have much choice because I look really young/babyish in my other nice senior pics. My aunt told me I looked 10 in my other pics :-( I think this is still recognizeably me though.

DubaiSis 08-19-2010 03:24 AM

You still look so young! But that's probably because I'm soooo old. But the picture is fine. It shows your face, and you should be recognizable from a distance. That's all that matters: Clear and flattering.

Drolefille 08-19-2010 08:17 AM

^^ Freshmen look REALLY young to me now.

I'm like, y'all are 12. Go back to Jr. High.

(And I don't say y'all much.)

Alumiyum 08-19-2010 10:36 AM

Good picture...the point is to be recognizable and I imagine this picture fulfills that requirement.

agzg 08-19-2010 10:49 AM

Regarding the facebook stuff - PNMs should also be very aware of who their friends are and what they have on their pages. There's such a thing as guilty by association, and I believe even if your profile is on the strictest privacy setting, someone who is not your friend can see who your friends are.

No, it's not that!

I mean - look at a HS yearbook from the 1950s. Those girls are all 17-18, and they look old to us, even though we're older now than they were then. I don't know what this phenomenon is called, but it needs a name.

greekxgal 08-19-2010 10:39 PM

Haha don't worry, I'm used to being told that I look young. I'm only 18 (I'll be 19 when I start school though) but I get mistaken for 14/15 a lot. I'm pretty sure people who don't know me would think i was going to be a freshman in high school than college lol! But I think size has to do with it, too. I'm kind of on the petite side.
Anyway, thanks for the input!

It's okay, the other day the lady at the spa we went thought I was 16 (I'm 20) and my 13 year old cousin was 18...

Could it be the older fashions and facial expressions?

The high schoolers and collegiates of generations ago had an older look and, what many today consider to be, old folks hairstyles and clothes. :) I even look at pre-1960s GLO pictures and think "were most of these nontraditional students?" I think that's because of the styles and facial expressions (posing for a pre-1960s camera could take forever) in many of the photos.

33girl 08-20-2010 12:51 PM

Well yes...that partly...but I wonder if teenagers today look at pictures of teenagers from the 1980s and think OMG THEY LOOK SOOOOOOOOO OLD.

DubaiSis 08-20-2010 03:21 PM

I've heard it on this site before. With the stuffy suits (and shoulder pads of course!) instead of fun dresses we looked like we were off to a staff meeting, not a fun evening in college with sisters. And the spackled on makeup did NOT help us look young and fun.

KSUViolet06 08-20-2010 03:39 PM

I frequently look at my mom's pics from college and think of how old she and her friends looked.

Lots of SERIOUS looking big sweaters and jeans with crazy heavy makeup.

greekmomjo 08-20-2010 07:52 PM

We had a PNM use a picture for every house that had her with her arm around her horse's head. So two heads in the picture. Comparing notes later, every house nick-named her something. She did pledge I hear, but the horse-y picture became something she had to overcome.

I would have loved seeing she was a rider, personally. But I have a feeling it would inspire a nickname or two on my campus as well.
