The Thrill = Chapel Thrill = Chapel Hill

Or at least it used to, in the olden days when I was in school.

You work with what you've got.

Still relevant!

LizzieBee 08-25-2010 10:49 AM

Yep, it's still the Thrill! I started classes yesterday and am loving everything about college, but it has been pretty stressful getting adjusted to everything. I've met some super sweet girls that I'm going to get ready with once rush starts, there's a promo event in the pit in a couple days, and that's the last event before kick-off!

Lightning Bug! 08-25-2010 02:22 PM

I got your story mixed up with a non-Carolina story, so I'm posting here the advice I erroneously posted there.

As with all schools, please go into rush with an open mind. Some years there is a lot of fierce competition during rush, and a lot of freshman arrive on campus having heard all sorts of stereotypes about every single house. It always has baffled me that this goes on there, considering how smart UNC women are. You will find just about every major in every sorority, extensive community involvement, and a lot of sisterhood. Maybe there are a few girls in each house that fit the stereotype, but the majority of them are great women. I never met a Greek woman at Carolina who didn't have friends in other sororities. Furthermore, with the Greek community being small at Carolina, relative to other southern schools, you will end up having a lot of friends not only in other sororities but also outside the Greek system. I am hoping the days of tent talk and stereotypes are coming to an end, but if you hear any, please remember that it really is largely a non-issue once rush is over. Find a home where you feel comfortable in your own skin and where you think you can have both a fun and productive college career.

It sounds like MandyPepperidge is more involved in recent recruitment efforts there, so I'll let her be your guide, should you have any questions, but I hope she agrees with me that all the houses have their share of superstars and sweethearts.

Best of luck!

Hey everyone! I just wanted to let you know that recruitment kickoff is today! I think we are just going to get some general information and meet our Rho Chis. I got a call from my Rho Chi last night, so I already know what group I'm in. I just have to finish up my homework, then I'm going to go get ready. I'll update you tomorrow and let you know how it goes!

Lightning Bug! 08-30-2010 04:00 PM

Good luck! I know the sisters are excited as the PNMs are!

FSUZeta 08-30-2010 07:28 PM

yay lizzie!! enjoy the evening!

LizzieBee 08-31-2010 10:59 PM

Sorry it took me so long to post, the amount of homework that's already piling up is ridiculous! The kick off was GREAT, and I love my Rho Chi's they are so sweet. We get to spend more time with our group Thursday, so I'll get to know everyone better then.

LizzieBee, you are in college now! First semester is a huge adjustment, just don't get behind.

And... best of luck to you in your recruitment!

LizzieBee 09-02-2010 05:46 PM

Thanks AzTheta, I'm not getting behind, it's just a lot. I've already knocked everything out for this weekend, so I get to just sit back and enjoy recruitment.

drgnlady 09-02-2010 07:39 PM

Good luck tomorrow and stay dry!

LizzieBee 09-04-2010 12:24 AM

I got back from rush about an hour ago and was typing all my notes in word so I wouldn't forget. I LOVED IT. I now know that I definitely want to join a sorority, and there was only one house where I really couldn't see myself at. I do have a definite number one, but all of the girls were so GREAT! I can't wait to get my schedule Sunday and find out which houses I'm going back to.

rollthedice 09-04-2010 12:26 AM

I know this is a ridiculously fast reply to your post since you JUST posted it, but after I posted in a thread I came back to the recruitment story homepage and saw that you updated.

I'm glad you're having a positive experience so far! I hope you're happy with what you end up getting!

LizzieBee 09-04-2010 04:12 PM

My first posts say that I'm at UNC, so yes I am at a southern university :)

arrowlady 09-05-2010 11:32 AM

So happy to hear you are enjoying everything and can't wait to hear your story

laurand333 09-05-2010 02:06 PM

.

FSUZeta 09-06-2010 10:22 AM

and we can't wait to read all about it!!

LizzieBee 09-09-2010 01:23 PM

It's bid day!!!!!!!! I'm so excited, AND this means that the first part of my story is coming verrry soon :)

SO curious as to what this could be. The only thing that pops to my mind is one of our chapters who wears red skirts and white tights. Works for them, but my big booty and I would be a little scared at that prospect.

barbino 09-09-2010 02:37 PM

Go Jane Eyre!!! How did you know that I was re-reading it as I post this? I got a great hardcover copy for free and I could not resist. Charlotte Bronte is such a wonderful writer. Anyhow, good luck & let us know. :)

AXOrushadvisor 09-09-2010 02:56 PM

I'm dying to know what the A-list wore for round 1?

Lightning Bug! 09-09-2010 02:59 PM

I'm rooting for Private! Keep us updated on how Bid Day is!

During my first year rushing as an active one of the other chapters decided to wear "graffiti"-style t-shirts with leggings and heels for House Tour Round. While they were probably trying to show off the "quirky fun" side of their chapter, needless to say this style is less than flattering on the vast majority of body types, and the PNMs noticed in a big (and bad!) way.

Is this the chapter at OSU that is always bashed for the way they dress?

Low C Sharp 09-09-2010 06:12 PM

I'm wondering what they wore, too...maybe something the PNM perceived as trampy. I've seen a few outfits on the recruitment-photos threads that would have turned me off for that reason.

Then there are the Bid Day shirts that have been posted with messages on the order of "Having more fun than you since 1893." If some chapter wore a "We're the best and you're the rest" type shirt during rush, that could rub some PNMs very negatively.

No, different chapter, but I know who you're referring to, although I've kind of always liked the way that particular chapter dressed. It's very urban hipster and cute, but not very practical in the middle of a midwestern winter. Kind of like those adorable outfits you see on fashion runways that would look absolutely absurd if any normal human wore them out in public :)

Haha, I think I know EXACTLY what house you are talking about. One more day and I'm PMing you with the code. ;)

Hope you are enjoying bid day!

AWKWARD. I have to ask - how did you respond??

Are you supposed to say, "But you don't need that!" or "Why - you look beautiful" or "Well, good luck with your new nose/ears/boobs" or "Hey, can you give me the name of the surgeon if s/he does a good job?"

Still laughing...

LizzieBee 09-12-2010 03:42 PM

I just acted like I was excited for her and tried to change the subject. I really didn't have any idea what to do.

Lightning Bug! 09-12-2010 03:47 PM

Good move .... I probably would have been speechless. I had one such awkward conversation, when I was a sister doing the rushing. I asked a sophomore PNM about what extracurricular activities she'd gotten into her freshman year on campus, and she said "Boys, booze, and partying" with a totally straight face. I was speechless for a second. Although it was probably better than the time a PNM asked me which frat houses were the safest to pass out in. Anyway, end of lane swerve, please continue your story!

Lightning Bug! 09-12-2010 04:02 PM

Keep going...

Lightning Bug! 09-12-2010 04:03 PM

Congratulations!!

LizzieBee 09-12-2010 04:03 PM

Thanks!!!
