This is like a letter you write to some guy right after he breaks up with you. She forgot the part about either ripping it up immediately afterward or letting it sit aside for a week before rereading and then sending.

I can't believe it was published- not just because of the subject matter, but because of how terrible it was to try to read!

I tried twice to make some sense out of that mess, not to mention the comments. All I can say is that it is a great example of what not to do after ANY type of life disappointment.

Lovely ladies of AKA, I'm going to go ahead and say that you made the right choice in rejecting this woman.
I'm sitting 10 feet away from an AKA and thinking the same thing. The late paperwork saved them the effort of rejecting her on her merits.

I can only imagine the conversations in chapter meetings this week. Oh, to be a fly on the wall.

I am not a member of a greek-org, but I will say that this part of her message caught me the most:

"I attended all the meetings and informational gatherings. I was given inaccurate information regarding the submission of necessary materials. This misinformation led to my not getting a nomination and becoming a legacy in my sorority of choice."

I will go out on a limb and say that I am sure the ladies of this sorority DID NOT single her out to give the wrong information. As far as I have read/been told, and ladies of the sorority can comment on this, all information about submitting documents, etc is given at the rush. How is that THIS one person heard the wrong information, but other people were able to get their things in??

Given that she did not submit her paperwork on time/correctly, what makes her think that the sorority would make an exception for HER?!?!? They have rules in place for a reason or else they would have to make the same exception for every woman that comes through "and receives the incorrect information." Regardless, of what your mom, sister, cousin, aunt did, you have to stand on your own two feet amongst everyone else.

This can also be taken on a professional level. If you are applying for a scholarship or looking for a job or what have you, you must submit your paperwork on time just like everyone else. As harsh as this may sound, many people could care less about excuses.

This is Entitlement 101.

I didn't do X on time, but I deserve an exception because *insert lame excuse here*

Being a member of the particular chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., I will not say that your chances of becoming a member are over, but your DESIRE to become part of the organization is questioned. I do not want to attack you, but I do want to lay out some facts: When you came to the informational, you showed up LATE. Not only did you show up late, but you came in jeans and a t-shirt to a BUSINESS CASUAL event. On top of that, you sat in the back, slouched in a chair, with your arms folded. Now tell me commenters, would you think that this young lady had even the smallest interest in this organization, or was she maybe FORCED (legacy) to attend to uphold her mother's standards. No, we had no clue that she was legacy, because she made no effort to mingle with anyone there. She simply LEFT once the information was given. Once again, I will not say that your chances are ruined, but if you would like a chance, we would like to see that you actually care. Even though I find this article a bit offensive, I will say that its the first sign that you actually care!

This about sums it all up. Given that this is a real member of that AKA chapter, that is enough reason right there that she did not get chosen. It appears like she thought that by being legacy of such a "famous" AKA, that things would just be handed to her on a silver platter and that the sorority just HAD to have her.

xomanadaxo 04-05-2010 03:52 PM

I know I'm way out of my lane here, but reading this made me smile on behalf of the women of AKA. I know next to nothing about NPHC recruitment, but I have to admit...I always appreciate when people who are this entitled get what's coming to them :)

And maybe it's just me, but did the whole "legacy of a famous founding sister" thing remind anyone else of that Lifetime movie "Sorority Wars?" :p

Angelicqt716 04-05-2010 11:06 PM

I personally think her chances are ruined. Who knows what chapterthisarticle will end up at. I think the only way she'll get in is if her mom pulls strings or something. Jmo

Also, thanks for letting the e-world know that your loose-lipped BFF member of Delta at 'the University of Central Arkansas in Conway' (lol) did not get the memo on discretion. I hope this is shown to her chapter so they can address this problem accordingly.

Eh, I think her chances were ruined from the gate....some things just can not be said on a public website for the world to see and for you to never be able to erase.

.... Just saying...

I'm not GREEK or anything but... it said she graduated HS in 2009... it's only 2010... now... don't you have to have what would amount to Sophomore credits to even try to be in a NPHC sorority/fraternity... so... she's like a Freshman.

So she effed it up before her time?...

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAA!! Priceless!

This isn't my lane, but many students come to college today with credits from AP and IB courses, so while she may be a freshman by year, she could be "older" by credit. Whether or not this is relevant to NPHC pursuit, I don't know.

Like the last poster, not my lane either by according to AKA national website:
"Completion of at least one successful grading period (or a defined by the university) as a full-time student at the institution where application is made;"

Different schools/different chapters rules will vary, but in accordance with what the last poster said and this from the website, it would seem that she would be eligible her second semester there. AKA ladies feel free to chime in.

jdrama 04-06-2010 11:35 PM

CDancer-Oh word?!! I stand corrected.

Either way, she STILL effed it up!

This is where you should have stopped. :)

In addition to what Gusteau said about credits, at least four of the nine definitely allow second semester freshmen to pledge.

DrPhil 04-07-2010 09:58 AM

When will CDancer and the other supposed nonGreeks just shut up and silently read?

most NPHC orgs require you to have anywhere from 9 to 24 hrs at THAT institution.. no transfer hrs are accepted.. most of the time, freshmans are not eligible, but in same cases it could be possible.. but atleast not until their 2nd semester for sure
