I don't remember the first lady in the evening gown, but that white, sparkle bra thing is gross.

Miss Indiana's looks like a wedding dress

I think Miss Iowa's dress is pretty, but it makes her look 8 sizes bigger

Not a fan of Miss NY's dress

I think my faves were the bright red one (looked like Eva Longoria's gown) and the blue one

I always thought there was some sort of rule like that, to keep girls who lived in bigger states (with more competition) from moving to a state or area with fewer contestants JUST to get a title (like if a girl were living in a big state like TX, but didn't want to compete there, she couldn't just move to North Dakota and compete in their state).

I have way too much time on my hands and I searched for the requirements to be able to compete in Miss America. Basically, you have to meet the residential characteristics for your state, but when I went to the Miss Hawaii site, I couldn't find any specifics on residential qualifications

Is it me, or is Miss Arkansas gorgeous?

KSUViolet06 01-24-2009 10:04 PM

I love Miss Iowa's gown.

Miss GA, Miss NY, and Miss CA had really pretty ones too.

Contestants I want to see in Top 10:

California
Georgia
Florida
New York

Was Miss Iowa the one who spoke backwards? If so, yes, that dress was beautiful, but not on her.

We've had dozens of disputes over Misses PA/NJ/NY - women who went to school in one state so could represent it. The one that's outstanding in my memory is one Miss PA who lived in NJ, but took THREE credits in a Philadelphia Community College!

DreamfulSpirit 01-24-2009 10:06 PM

I couldn't stand Arkansas's gown...way too flashy for me, IMO.

honeychile 01-24-2009 10:07 PM

Which one had the silver dress?

honeychile 01-24-2009 10:09 PM

Oh, this is really messed up, how they're doing the Talent portion!

That was Arkansas.

Georgia's voice seems to fade into the background of the music.

You mean not telling everyone who the finalists are and THEN having them do their talents? I agree.

I hope they at least told the finalists back stage so that girls aren't waiting back stage to do their talent and never being called.

DreamfulSpirit 01-24-2009 10:14 PM

Can anyone read the little blurbs their popping up on the screen about each contestant during their talent?

Isn't this what they did last year? It obviously hasn't been aired here yet, but I'm not sure if I'm going to watch it later, so I'm relying on you guys.

Last year they had the girls sit off to the side, and revealed who the finalists were when it came time for them to do their talent.

Some of them - Miss Hawaii has been a competitive Hula Dancer for 18 years (it said).

KSUViolet06 01-24-2009 10:16 PM

Is anyone keeping track of who made it to the talent round?

I have:

Georgia
Hawaii
Indiana

DreamfulSpirit 01-24-2009 10:17 PM

Yeah, they did do this last year.

Eh, I think it's kind of cruel to have them sit there in front of everyone, in their costumes, when they could be keeping limber or whatever.

texas*princess 01-24-2009 10:29 PM

Miss California looked really surprised to be called, so I'm thinking they had no idea they would be called.. that's crazy

kddani 01-24-2009 10:29 PM

All of the efforts to make the pageant more modern and relevant- I still think some of the talents are a snooze...

I appreciate the efforts to revamp, but it almost seems like they're trying TOO hard to say "hey, we're hip, we're cool and modern". I also love how Mario always has to say "these beautiful, talented, intelligent women" or some variation. Mario, we know you've already hit on at least half the contestants...

honeychile 01-24-2009 10:33 PM

Top Ten

DC
Georgia*
New York
Hawaii
Indiana
Florida
Tennessee*
California
Iowa

Yeah, I liked the pageant better when it was on a major network, and was just a NORMAL pageant (sans the reality TV components and add-ons that are supposed to make it "exciting.")

But I suppose that was before it stopped getting the ratings...

texas*princess 01-24-2009 10:43 PM

these poor girls are sooooo nervous :(

So far all of them have answered their questions at a mile a minute...

KSUViolet06 01-24-2009 10:45 PM

At least nobody ended up doing a Miss Teen (?) South Carolina and babbling on about maps and "the Iraq." Poor girl.

honeychile 01-24-2009 10:49 PM

I'm lost - how many are there now? Are they going from EIGHT to the ???

honeychile 01-24-2009 10:49 PM

I think that Tennessee & Georgia are the only Greeks left.

MSKKG 01-24-2009 10:51 PM

If that Secret commercial comes on one more time, I'm gonna scream!

LOL!

I guess my hope that Michigan wins just went down the tubes.

bless her heart ;)

honeychile 01-24-2009 10:57 PM

4th Runner Up - Miss Florida
3rd Runner Up - Miss New York
2nd Runner Up - Miss Iowa
1st Runner Up (you just know that she's buying PhotoShop tonight!) - Miss Georgia

Miss America - Miss Indiana!

KSUViolet06 01-24-2009 10:58 PM

I was really pulling for Georgia, she was my FAVE. But she ended up 1st runner up though, and that's good.

honeychile 01-24-2009 10:58 PM

Was anyone else surprised to hear how little the scholarships are? I caught it at 3rd Runner Up - $15,000. She probably spent more on her clothes!

That's not even enough for a YEAR at some private schools.

honeychile 01-24-2009 11:08 PM

I guess it's a hard sell - people have only so many charity dollars to spend. Who are you going to give them to: the USO, Juvenile Diabetes, or Miss America?

True, and most people figure that the Miss America contests are such that they have other scholarship opprtunities avaliable since they're so academically accomplished (or they have parents who can assist them with college tuition).

AGDLynn 01-24-2009 11:17 PM

Miss Indiana and Miss Georgia were my 1st choices;)

i also liked Miss New York.

I ddn't like Miss Tenn; she looked like she was giving snarky looks, just call my name and get it over with!

honeychile 01-24-2009 11:17 PM

This was actually the competition that ruined my childhood dreams. I'm not saying that I'm gorgeous, or was on the pageant trail, but for some reason, the glamour of Miss America seems to have dissapated for me now. :(

I didn't watch but back when I competed Miss America's scholarship was over $50,000. I don't remember anything in the Top 5 under $25,000. I'm thinking the shrinking scholarships have more to do with their ratings than it does with the economy.

MSKKG 01-25-2009 01:00 AM

Just realized that the Outstanding Teen is from South Carolina! :D

FSUZeta 01-25-2009 10:45 AM

i hated the way they had the talent be impromptu-how unfair that the contestants had to sing/dance/knit/usher in world peace on the fly. i felt that the talent level wasn't what it has been in the past and wondered if the format had anything to do with it.

i hated all the "inner-beauty" answers the contestants gave for their defination of "glamour". to me, glamour and inner beauty have nothing to do with one another. glamour is about style , elegance and sophistication. you can be glamourous and have inner beauty, but you can be oozing inner beauty and be the frumpiest woman on earth.
